View Full Version : Men: Do you shave your legs, arms and everything below the neck?
kabunaru

I do and I shave everything below the neck (that means legs, arms, chest, private area, etc). It very hygienic to do so and I do not care if somebody is going to say something bad about it or not. I exercise a lot too (running and walking a lot) so shaving helps there too. I also feel more comfortable when fully shaved "below the neck".
Is any one doing this too or am I the only one?

I think there is already a shaving thread somewhere. I'll post the link if I find it.
Edit: Here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=84676) is the thread I was talking about.

But this is more "below the neck" specific kind of shaving thread.
Edit: Also, that thread is old.
By the way, do you shave "below the neck" for some purposes?

Only down there.

Only down there.
And I do not think that it is wrong to do so. Man's body is just as unique and pleasing as the woman's. There should be nothing to be ashamed of about the human body.
If a man wants to shave, let him. Screw the society standard where "women should only shave there".
That is how I think. Just look at the ancient civilisations (Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, etc). Men shaved their bodies back then.

I thought most women liked the 'hairy-but-trimmed' type of guy?
I used to shave my um, *ahem* Gentlemen's Environs but that's going back many years... I don't shave down there anymore (more of a rough trim with a dull straight-edge...). I never have shaved my chest, pits (arm) or legs and have no desire to do so.
I try to get by with as little shaving as I can. I am naturally very sparse in body hair anyway. More of the oriental look, you could say. It takes me four or five days to get a five o'clock shadow, so I go a couple days without shaving (facial) if I can.
Come now, ladies, your turn: Fess up! ;)

I really think this is some ingrained desire for man to seperate ourselves from beast. Perhaps while in our natural hairy state we remind ourselves too much of our relative primates. Whats next, shaving eyebrows?

They already do it in Japan. Some people shave off (or drastically reduce) their eyebrows and draw in the shape they like (usually thin eyebrows).

I couldn't imaging fully shaved though. Not that I am hairy all over, but a bald patch anywhere other than the top of your head is just not natural. What if you change your mind after completing said shave, you can't get a wig for it can you?

I think grooming above the neck is more important. Having hair cut to a decent length for your age/profession. Shaving when appropriate (though a few days' stubble is also cool). Make sure nose hair is well-managed and no bushery hanging out. Make sure eye brows don't get overly bushy. Getting older and now the inside of the ears need a quick trim once a week or so.
During summer months or when involved in a vigorous hobby/activity, I'll shave off the armpit hair. And I'll trim not shave the nether regions though to be honest, this is better done with someone else (I'll trim you, you shave me) as it too can lead to some vigorous activity/hobby.

This is something I would never consider doing. I can understand a male competitive swimmer doing it for areodynamic reasons. Probably because it's the only(?) area you shave daily. Stop shaving your face for a day or two, and it'll be much easier/more comfortable. Or conversely, try shaving everything else every single day, and see how quick 'n' easy it is then! :p

Ouch! I don't think you realize just how quickly my facial hair grows and how much is there. I don't get a 5 o'clock shadow, I get a 2 o'clock shadow. For me at least, when the stubble comes up it can be a bit tough to shave, but once it gets a tiny bit longer (perhaps, after 48 hours without shaving) it's easy to shave, and the skin isn't as sensitive - I'm guessing because it hasn't been dehydrated by dragging a blade across it the previous day.

I do not shave my head and eyebrows. I like my hair on the head and eyebrows.
I do not have an beard or anything like that.
No, my body is used to this shaving so it is not stubble any more now.
I know it's sort of an old wives' tale, but don't you tend to make your hair grow back stronger if you keep shaving it? Also, isn't it just a bitch to constantly shave your entire body? Why not just wax/laser/put Nair on it?

Like I said, I didn't think it was true, I just don't understand how the OP can stand to shave his whole body every few days. I don't have that kind of time/motivation; I would give up after a few minutes and just look really weird (kind of like Steve Carrell in The Forty Year Old Virgin after he got semi-waxed).

I was thinking the same thing! Wouldn't this be awfully time consuming? Seems pretty obsessive to me as I find shaving my face to be bothersome. Wouldn't you have to do this several times a week for it to actually serve it's goal?Ya, it is enough of a pain in the ass to just shave my face. Why would I want to add more. Plus it gets cold here in the winter. I need all the hair I can get.Trim with a trimmer and then a razor.

I only shave or wax my back hair if I know I need to, but I never shave my chest, for anyone. I like it alot. I don't follow that whole thing where men need to be hairy because they are supposed to be masculine. If you don't like your body hair, go ahead and shave it, I happen to like mine. so there ;)

Oh absolutely. I've always hated mine. Maybe it's because I hit puberty before all of the other guys at school. It sucked being the only kid who shaved in the 5th grade. :) Then it started sprouting everywhere and before I knew it, I looked like Austin Powers. :( It was always warm and itchy and I always felt like I couldn't keep myself clean. So- I got rid of it. If other people like theirs, great! I always hated it.

I can understand trimming, really. The bald look doesn't do anything for me personally, but I really can understand why some people trim, especially when it's in an area that jostles around and can 'abrade' with regular wear.
I figure I'll be bald soon enough as I age, I'll keep what I have for now and just make sure it's landscaped appropriately.

I won't say I haven't tried shaving various body parts--and at one time there was some enjoyment to shaving the unmentionable regions--but now I leave all body hair alone and only trim the nether regions reasonably. (I only grow a very tiny tuft of blonde, soft hair on the small of my back and I leave that alone too. YES! BACK HAIR! Get over it. I've actually found some back hair to be very attractive on a guy before--but there is gross back hair too. It really just depends. Anyway, I might shave if the hair like on my chest was also on my back, but I guess I have lucky genes so far. Anyway, I digress. Point is, I don't shave.)
Hair is natural, and hairy is sexy.
I actually find a man unattractive if he has no chest hair (with the possible exception of a huge bodybuilder, but then again, he'd be hotter with hair), unappealing and non-sexual if he has no pubic hair (it's too close to emulation of a prepubescent state to me), and it's grotesque to see a man with no leg hair, underarm hair, or forearm hair (as in--wtf, why would you do that? about as attractive as someone with no eyebrows).
Body hair is a secondary sexual characteristic, and as masculinity and a sexualized state are attractive to me, it is therefore attractive. I don't mind people who shave their backs or shoulders or trim their pubes and keep everything in check if their genetics can cause undesired thickness of hair growth, but men who shave completely, to me, are feminizing their bodies. I don't get how this is desirable.

That is not true. Why do you people have this idea stuck to your head? Screw society and the standards it set.
I said "to me," lack of body hair is feminizing, which implies that it was in my opinion. But that said, it is not just opinion; it is biology that body hair is a secondary-sex characteristic, meaning it is a secondary characteristic of your sex, and more directly, a result of male androgen production and reception. It is, most literally, a masculine trait. I'm not talking about opinions or society here! Men grow way more body hair than women on average, and while gender is actually a continuum, there are clear lines, such as when you have a 'y' chromosome. So please, do not mistake my words for some societally-brainwashed simp just because my natural, biologically-aware opinion happens to coincide with some closed-minded societal beliefs.
Exactly- it's my body. F*** other people if they don't like it. The fact of the matter is that there are always people out there who won't like you for something. I feel bad that you too have mistaken my intents. I see your posts around and I think you're a really great person and I'm glad that you post at MR. I even look up to you. But I do not tell people how to be. I was expressing my opinion.
I used to have facial piercings, a mohawk, dye my hair unemployable colors, wear makeup (and I don't just mean emo eyeliner, I was a makeup artist), theatrical contact lenses, wear crazy mashed-up reconstructed clothes, and as I said I've even shaved almost every part of my body (save eyebrows/eyelashes! that would be awful). So I am no stranger to bucking the norm for appearance. But my experiences have shown me that every appearance can cause a reaction: I had friends who, because of my appearance, did not think they were attractive/cool/punk/alt/beautiful/daring/whatever enough. So just being myself was enough to tell other people "I don't like you" or "I'm better than you," when that was never even my intent. Just as with this: I'm only doing what I want, and stating my own opinions. Such is the discourse of a forum.
Anyway, I never meant to disrespect anyone else's choices. I just wanted to bring to the table that there are some of us who love body hair and think it's great. I wouldn't dream of the choice to shave, let alone the investment of work or some of the downsides (bumps, rash, ingrown hairs, stubble, time, cost--and yes, I know there are ways to eliminate or defeat these issues, as I said I have been there and done that). I have been with guys of all body shapes and types and I can say that I would prefer a guy who left at least some body hair, but that could all be swayed by the guy and his preferences and his style and his reasons for being himself and doing what he does. To each his own.

It is a myth that hair will grow back thicker.
Would you even ever consider shaving your private area, legs, arms, chest and under-arms?

I always shaved my arms and legs when I went on long bicycle rides. Even though my hair is thin, the wind would make it itch like crazy. Now that I'm older and don't go as fast, it's not so much of a problem!
I trim down below only during the summer and only once.
What bothers me the most is the tufts of hair growing out of my ears!

Hairless, at that.
I tried the whole 'shaven' look for a short while, and didn't get used to it and didn't like it. There. I'm not trying it again. I figger the hair is growing there for a reason; I'll trim if I'm desperate, but nothing else.
I am glad I don't have a hairy back, though. That, for some reason, grosses me out even more than women with hair in their armpits. Actually, I take that back: Women with bushy hair in their armpits. A little bit is acceptable.

Shaving does not turn you into woman. In fact, I feel more like a Pharaoh or an Roman Emperor with a shaved body than an un-shaved body.
And I do not put any gloss after shaving. I just put a moisturiser after shaving because the skin is dry after the shave.

I really think the pro-hair camps should be split between "appreciating hair" and "being afraid of shaving because it's what a woman would do," because so many comments in this thread are about OMG DO YOU WEAR PANTHOSE TOO!??? AND LIPGLOSS??!! etc.
This last page is more than a little embarrassing to my gender.
There's nothing wrong with skin care. Everybody can use hygiene, like washing their face, moisturizing their skin, etc. But this is about the aesthetics and other benefits, as well as the downsides and other opinions, about men who have shaven bodies.

The lines between chapstick, lip balm, lip remedy, lip protectant, lip oil, lip gloss.. they're blurred. Now, hot pink, sparkly, shiny-looking lip gloss is definitely lip gloss, but I have a few non-gender-specific or even male-marketed lip products that are either too glossy for some or even too gloss-like for me. Then, I'm sure in hollywood, men straight out use MAC makeup clear lip gloss, because if you don't glob it on, it can look entirely natural.
Just to show how stupid mincing words about lip gloss is.

I've always found this rather unfortunate. If the only reason one takes care of oneself is to acquire a mate, then you're doing it for the wrong reasons. But then I guess it explains why a lot of married couples I know seem to gain about 200 pounds between them after they tie the knot.

I posted a page or two back that I don't shave any part of my body, but I trim my full beard and keep the pubic area in check. I argued with a few people about how (completely) shaving hair off of the male body is feminizing, as male body hair is a secondary-sex characteristic caused by male androgens. Some people tried to tell me I was "buying into society's thoughts," but I defended my stance which is based purely on (a) biology and (b) my personal opinions.
I think guys look best with anywhere from short, shaven body hair (so it lays flat) to full natural body hair. Obviously some people have thicker, more prominent, darker, coarser, curlier, or unfortunately-placed body hair, so different approaches are best for different people. I will say that when I see a guy who has shaven his chest and armpits, it's a little sad to me, but it's sometimes made up for by the fact that he has nice muscles or a good tan. Now, if I see a guy with shaved legs or shaved forearms, I am actually like "wtf, why?" unless he has an absolute swimmer's build and is clearly a swimmer, as that is the only reason I could see someone doing that... but even then, completely unattractive to me and most female friends that I have.

I was being farcical, slightly. I'll say that I used to be morbidly obese, and then I began to understand how it affected my health, my body image, my self-confidence, the way that I relate to others in turn, etc... then I started to eat right and go to the gym to do something. I had no idea what I was doing, but I had fun with my workout partner. Soon, I started to learn about how our anatomy works, how the body responds to exercise, how the food pyramid is completely wrong, etc... and then I started to care about having clothes that fit once I realized my body had changed, clothes that expressed me, making my hair look the best I could, investing in things that complemented, enhanced, or augmented my appearance. Inevitably, I had a phase where my obsession was appearance and perfection was everything, and my only basis for self-worth was comparative and appearance-based. It wasn't long until I saw the detriment and reevaluated my values, realizing that there are more important pursuits and reasons to be your best in life. It was liberating. Once I finally let go of some of those kneejerk ideas and accepted myself, it was funny how quickly I began to enjoy my life for what it was and could be. Some time after that, I met my boyfriend of over three years now, and that has also helped me to realize that I was sometimes doing the right things for the wrong reasons. I also realized that sometimes I went to lengths to get attention or be noticed, or even sometimes to not be noticed, that were hurtful and required time and resources that were completely not worth it, and in the end only achieved the opposite. Being in a relationship has helped me realize who I am and who I want to be, because being single and unsure of myself was just an extension of never being accepted when I was fat and ugly.
Anyway, long story short, I still take care of myself, but I'm not putting off other, more important things for it. And I'm not sulking and not going out to do something fun because I can't see my abs this week or because I have to make sure I don't have a single visible body hair or spending 20 minutes on my hair with tons of expensive products to get everything just so. Not that there's anything wrong with that--and I do have a few hair products some would call expensive, but they're my splurges because they make *me* feel good, not because I feel I need them.
Why was the last page embarrassing to your gender? I have to ask you- what is it that you think makes a man? Hair? You know- there are lot of guys who naturally don't have much body hair out there- what is your opinion of them?
The last page was full of stuff like "what, do you wear lip gloss too?" and "what next, makeup? because that's totally girly! and unacceptable!" and "gay circus performers!" and stuff like that. Even though it was mostly humor, it was just totally about gender roles and rules and how they dominate our perception and change our behavior based on fear.
You took it a completely different way than intended. I think if you have a Y chromosome, choose to express yourself as a man, and/or feel that you are a man, then you are a man. Not that it matters to anyone but you. As far as how you express that you are a man, I think every individual is free to do what he wishes, and that is great! I'm sure people don't find me attractive, hair and all, and that is perfectly cool with me! They can still be my friend.

It WAS humor and i wasn't referring to you specifically. With the whole thread-idea. I mean you are in a middle of a war, then what? Are you actually going to care about hair? Ok i know it's not the perfect example but i don't believe shaving every hair on your (not your!) body is right. And i'm referring for "normal" guys, having hair not having a decease or something and not having hair.
For me trimming is ok although i don't do it. It's like the line. Shaving everything for me is passing the line a lot!

Haha. I try. Some weeks, it's more important to get to class and make dinner and have time to myself to get things DONE than it is to get in a full workout or have pressed shirts or get my hairs cut, so I end up greasy-haired and wearing my hoodie and some jeans. It's nice to be able to relax about it all. But it's also a mentality of acceptance. My body is hairy, and I have come to a point where I find it attractive in others and myself. I think it's great that there is another viewpoint other than body hair being vile and worthy of removal at all costs; as I said I think I had a complex about it before. Thank you for the validation... I hope that others can learn to accept themselves more from my words.
And I'm not THAT hairy. My partner is a little more hairy, but not to the point where there is that line between the chest and shoulders. He does experience chest hair going really high on his chest, where it begins to connect with the straggling beard hairs, which has always been sort of cute/amusing to me. He doesn't have "the neck line" that some guys do, because he lets it poke out of his collar (sexy, to me), but he does keep his beard extremely well-groomed so no one would know it.
There is a level of carpeted-ness that begins to be extreme to me, and I have seen it both in person and in.. ahem, adult movies. When it gets to be more of a flokati rug than a furry chest, that's when I'm sort of left speechless. But you know what, some people like that too, and good for them!
I have noticed you shave your head. I tried it for the first time last year, after my hair cuts getting gradually shorter and shorter, and eventually being curious as to what it felt/looked like. My hairline is receding, though no bald spot or thinning yet. According to others, I apparently have a great head for shaving... but man, I should have read more on the internet about how to not go over the same spot too many times. Ouchy! But I did like it... it's just easier to keep my hair at a 2- or 3-guard (well, 3 guard, 2 on the sides usually). I've been told it's easier with a head-shaving apparatus, though. Also funny, since my hair has been shorter the past couple of years, I am finding guys with shaved heads (Beckham, Vin Diesel, etc) a lot more attractive... :)

Only shaved down there once, when the girl I was dating at the time asked if she could do it for me. She assured me she had no complaints of the, ah, situation, but just wanted to see what it would be like.
I agreed after a little coaxing, and it wasn't so bad. Nothing I'm ever going to do though. She didn't prefer it either way, so she said.
Now I just keep it trimmed, but that's it.

No, I don't shave because it's not worth my time to do so. What people think of a part of my body they never see 99% of the time doesn't bother me - it doesn't mean I'm brain washed it simply means I don't want to shave. To be honest, whether or not a woman shaved (granted, no mustache. I draw the line there) would not have a bearing of whether I liked her or not - if things got intimate and I discovered she didn't shave from the neck down, I wouldn't just up and leave... it really just doesn't matter. I've known girls that are rather werewolvian but were sweet, decent people that I got along with well and in some cases was attracted to. It's personal choice, really, not society brainwashing people.

What I mean by brain-washed is that people are brain-washed to think that men who shave their bodies are strange or are not straight.
I do not judge people on if they shave or not.

I'd tend to lean towards thinking something was up with a guy who shaved his legs - shaving the Man Goodies and the chest is actually fairly common place these days - but when they go nuts with the razor it would sway a decision, but wouldn't necessarily make me think one way or another.
But yeah - we agree it would be silly to judge someone solely based on whither or not one shaves which part of his body.

Maybe in the year 2108 we will live in a society where women or men do not care if other men shave or not, we will in a society where people do not judge other people so shallowy (looks, if shave or not, etc), we will live in a society where people are more independent-thinkers and are actually are not afraid people of different ethnicity, culture and if they shave or not or whatever else they do, etc.

Am I the only one who has no idea what a "norelco" is, and is afraid to google it?
A Norelco is an electric razor, I believe.

A very nice electric razor. I got 12 hard years out of mine (didn't just shave my beard) - without ever needing a new blade or anything. It did fine until I dropped it on a hard surface.
I miss it.

What I mean by brain-washed is that people are brain-washed to think that men who shave their bodies are strange or are not straight.
I do not judge people on if they shave or not.
Media tends to judge people more for being hairy these days than shaving imo. Grooming is one thing, but there is something psychologically wrong w/ a society that insists that natural is not attractive and must be cosmetically altered to meet the standards of "beauty."

See, people are still not used to the shaved male look. People are afraid of something different.
Again, screw the society and media that keeps telling us what is "right" and what is "wrong". It brain-washes people.
Oh my gosh. Do you even listen to what I write here? I am completely used to the shaven male look. I am not afraid of something different. I don't base my opinions off of any societal norm. I've explained myself over the past two pages why I say what I say and you have just misinterpreted my words again.
Maybe I should argue the point that it is quite en vogue and some would say the standard de facto to have a hairless and shaven body, like our standard ideals of beauty imposed by society and the media. I see VERY few hairy chests on TV, in movies, on magazine covers, on product packaging, on fashion runways, in physique competitions, in sports, in music videos, etc. Who is brainwashed? Shave the icky hair off of you, or you'll be disgusting and look like a heathen! Shave it, and you will become a pristinely manicured greek God statue! ;) Two can play that game.

I actually like the shaved leg look and wish I had it, but I'm too damn lazy to bother actually doing something to get rid of it. Takes too much time to maintain and I'm lucky enough to be able to keep it and be socially acceptable, so why bother?

No, I don't shave because it's not worth my time to do so. What people think of a part of my body they never see 99% of the time doesn't bother me.
Ah! Maybe that's it! Mine gets seen quite a bit. I'm a part-time actor in small independent films. I recently found out after the fact that a producer had a shirtless scene written for me on purpose. He's a friend and did it mainly as a joke to see if I'd realize he did it, but still. :) I didn't catch it til the screening when I saw him smirk during the scene. I was like, DAMN! You bastard! :D He and his BF laughed.
So yeah, maybe I am a bit more concerned about my appearance than most.

Greek Gods didn't have man-boobs. Do they go away after a shave?

I think you'd need a very close shave.
On the other hand if you have a very hairy chest you could perhaps shave the sides and sort of sculpt the hair in the middle to hide the boobs?

I can be mistaken for an Roman Emperor now if I had the proper clothes.
By the way, I am 6 feet tall and weigh 160 lbs.

I trim "down there" to keep it neat but otherwise only shave my face. That being said, I'm not super hairy or anything. I don't really care if people shave or not. Shaved arms and legs used to look odd to me but since I got into weight lifting, cycling, and swimming, I'm pretty used to it. Personal choice, whether you do it for sport or just think it looks hot :).

Both of those choices for me. :)
Also, people do not notice that you are shaved even if you are wearing a shirt and shorts. It is not that noticeable especially if you have olive-bronze (which I have) or darker skin tone.

I trim a little down there when it needs it but that's it. I'm not afraid of some body hair in fact I'd feel a little silly with it all shaved off.

Stupid thread. I blame you for me getting the wild hair (so to speak) to shave some body parts this morning.
It's itchy already!!! ;)

Other std grooming practices (facial, neck, privtates), I dont shave. Personally, I find total body hair shaving by mails kind of strange, but will accept that doing so may make some sports (like swimming) easier....

Well, it is humorous, but also serious. I shaved some nether regions. Hadn't done that in a while.
But my hairy legs, chest, underarms, forearms, head, and beard are all intact, so all is not lost. ;)

Maybe there will be a "separation" of the human species:
Those who have hair: Homo Sapiens Sapiens
Those who do not have hair: Homo Haud Saeta Sapiens Sapiens
