View Full Version : PC'd Apple G5

A co-worker just sent me a link, and warned me that I may get sick looking at it. He is strictly a PC user, though he appreciates Apple and the design of the G5. He agrees with me that this is quite appalling.

I apologize if this has already been posted; I have not seen it here.

By the way the link isn't working but if you enter it without the index.asp it will load the article.
What kind of moron would tear apart a present that he stated himself as being very expensive and important to his parents?
Mav451
Jan 27, 2004, 03:01 PM
yeah pretty silly if you ask me. An AMD system (and even worse, a 2200+ means it is a FIRST GENERATION athlon XP chip, from 2001) is significantly cheaper than the dual G5 he originally had.
If had EBayed his system, he easily could have gotten 90% or even 100% of its original cost--that or he tells his parents that he doesn't use a Mac.
Had he placed a dual opteron system in there, maybe, just maybe it would have come to 60% of the original cost...even then it wouldn't be worth it...
very silly indeed. :(

That is the dumbest thing I think I have ever seen!
Take one brand new £2.4k computer, and rip it to pieces! Great idea! A Dell (thgat he wanted) wouldn't have cost half that (easily!)

From the article:
"I use it mostly for Internet, ripping music/DVDs and pissing off my friend."
Unless he couldn't figure out how to tick off his friend with the G5... he just wasted a lot of money... and I hope ticking off his friend is worth that much.
Edit: Relooking at the pre-tearing apart picture... it had two processors... is he CRAZY? If somebody gave me a tricked out Commodore 64/128 I'd at least do my research before I tore it apart to see how much I could get for it... sheesh...

Jan 27, 2004, 03:31 PM
Seems like the following would have been wiser options ...
A. Sell the present Dual G5 to someone who would use it, and then buy a cheaper, older, or used single processor G5 box if all you want is the box ...
He could have made the same piece of carp and had $1000 or more in his pocket.
B. Find an inoperable box and purchase it on the cheap
C. Contact the manufacturer of the case and see if you can buy one (or at least something similar.
I guess the kid's parents have money to burn.
<wonder what would happen if we found out who they were and told them>
 :D

They would probably reuse the G5 case! It would be a shame to put it in the ground though.

At least he was smart and kind enough to give the Innards of the G5 to his buddy. With any luck he'll be able to put THEM into another case and have at least a semi-functional to functional G5.

One of the stupidist things i have seen in a while, I wonder what he will think when UT2004 and Doom 3 are running better on G5s then the windows machine. Taking a wonderful engineering job and then turning it into a rat nest PC. so many adjectives to describe his actions. D.A.

I know its a sick mod but I find it oddly appealing. Kind of like the feeling you get watching a good horror movie.
I would have loved to have paid for the guts of the dual G5 and put them in a nice PC case. I doubt it would look as nice as the original but it would certainly be fun.:D

Why would he do such a thing!? (I know he stated his "reasons", but still!)

Jan 27, 2004, 05:39 PM
I think you guys have to realize he couldn't have sold it. He needed the case to make it seem like he kept the computer. You are acting just like his parents would if they found out :) I haven't seen any g5 cases on ebay, or non-working computers, so he probably couldn't just buy one of those. The PC modding community does a lot of cool things. Maybe not cost efficient, but its a decent set up.

I get your point but if he was the sort of person that had $3000 to blow on a case for a PC then I think he would have done a better job with the internals. It's a total hack job that looks like a 6th grader could have done better.

Not even. its an athlon 2200. that doesn't even show up on the quick list...okay, there, $56 bucks. this is the equivalent of the $319 el cheapo dell system, minus the fact that thats a price for new components.
the worst part is he cut out the case for an atx panel...the board he wants to put in there will no doubt be longer, so he's pretty much ruined the case.
If he had a ounce of intelligence, he would have sold the g5 and bought a new system.

Is this a joke? He uses it for internet and ripping CDs and DVDs? Which, OBVIOUSLY, can't be done on a Mac. ;)
Is he just a spoiled kid, and thinks this is a way to secretly get back at his parents.
Is he in need of attention?
Man, those fans are going to be loud.

The first picture he posted, of his intact G5 was just so beautiful, and as he progressed through his "transition" i got sicker and sicker!! all the ugly PC parts and wires all over the place! he completely destroyed such a beautiful machine just to use XP!!!!
I wonder if he even booted it up and played with it, to see if he could "tolerate" OSX for a 4Ghz machine! i mean he says, "i am no Mac user" i wonder if he has ever tried! OMG what an idiot!
If i were his friend i would be so mad at him!! but then again i would also have all the makings and insides of a G5! so i bet his friend was happy and mad!
People like this should just sit back and really re-evaluate what they are doing!! like it was a christmas gift, geez!

Two things:
1. You don't need extra "Apple software" to use the internet or burn DVDs with a Macintosh. In fact, using the internet is a lot more secure and pleasant when you don't have to deal with viruses, worms, patches, pop up ads, spyware, etc. (All of which you can avoid with a Macintosh)
2. He wanted a Dell instead? Anyone who knows anything about a computer would never admit to or want to own a Dell. Come on, even PC users with half a brain would pass up Dell and get a better computer, especially if they had the money to blow.

I just wanted to remind the poster above that it IS possible to rip dvd's using OSX. Not sure of the success rate, but I downloaded it to try with one of my legally purchased DVD's.. actually a friend gave it to me years ago and it would rip about 10 or 15 minutes and then the program would crash. Bummer too cuz the resulting avi's were really nice quality.

Well immediately I was going to at least condole this kids actions since his software is all PC based and he didn’t want to piss off his parents I mean….I mean….no…sorry. Stop. I can’t find any excuse for this. PC or Mac. Makes no difference to me. The fact is this uber ****tard ripped apart a $3,000 computer system. Holy freaking crap!!!! I can guarantee his parents when , not if but WHEN, they find out will take WAY greater offense to the fact that he pulled a freaking Jack the Ripper on a 3 grand purchase. I wonder what monitor they got him as well and then you add Applecare. Crap. I bet all told it was near $4,000
As someone pointed out VPC for the G5 will be out in a few months making everything other then gaming a moot point. I just can’t comprehend this ape’s thinking. He ripped it apart to: Fool his parents and for just the case. This makes absolutely NO sense at all. None. Zero.
Part of me hopes Steve Jobs sees this, freaks out, tracks down the order somehow, and contacts the parents giving them a stern talking too about how much of a brat they have.
I’ve got to agree with the majority here. What a freaking spoiled, over indulged, touched in the head, deprived of oxygen at birth, moronic dumb***. There are people that work their ***es off to afford such a computer and this little s*** has the balls to rip his gift to shreds. The only thing I liked out of his mod was the lighting but that is no excuse. Yep gotta call moron on this one. MORON I SAY MORON!!!

It seems very unlikely to me that this story is as it has been presented. I am, of course, a skeptic. Here's what I think is a far more possible scenario. Imagine that you work for Dell (or Microsoft) and you want to stir up the macheads on the internet. You requisition a Dual G5, get the folks in PR to dream up a "spoiled rich kid" story and then have the dweebs in engineering schlock together a Frankenstein box from the gutted remains of Apple's pride and joy. Then plant the story on the internet and wait for the controversy to begin. What a perfect crime! Lots of free publicity and a new urban legend is born; "Hey, didja hear about the guy whose parents got him a Mac, but hated it so much that he gutted it and put a PC inside it to fool them when all he wanted was a Dell?" If that sounds impossible -- it probably is.

Why on earth would you buy a $3000 dual-processor PowerMac G5 only to rip out the innards and put a -smaller- PC motherboard in there instead? Not only that, but use an old Athlon instead of something comparable to the two PowerPC G5s?? I cannot believe just how incredibly dumb this is. I mean, the guy didn't even do the case modification properly, and he put a neon light in there, of all things? This is the dumbest, most wasteful, and downright most insane mod I've EVER seen. It's so bad, it's a disgrace.

Its too bad Apple decided to mount the board on the opposite side, because you can only fit a Micro ATX board due to the location of the slots. I considered cutting out the entire back and doing a total swap with my old Dell PC, but I think it would have ruined the over all look to the case.
Obviously nothing HE did really ruined the overall look.... *ahem*

If that sounds impossible -- it probably is. If this was actually the result of a PC company's publicity stunt, they would've equipped the case with good PC equipement, not something that only costs $50. They also would've provided links (even if only in the form of banner ads) back to that PC manufacturer's web site.
As an ad, an article like this does no good whatsoever. Do you seriously think it will convince anybody to buy a PC they weren't already planning to buy? Can you even think of a way that someone might think otherwise?

First off, I find it rather amusing that the PC he installed in that case will probably perform slower than Virtual PC running on that G5 system. But that's beside the point.
If any child of mine decided to completely destroy a $3000+ present, it would be the last present of any kind he ever got from me. I would immediately take away his computer, his stereo system, his cell phone, and anything else electronic in his posession. He would spend the rest of his childhood either in school or reading books in an empty bedroom until he turns 17. And then he can go get a job and find his own place to live.
He could've easily said "Mom, this is nice, but I'd really rather have a Dell". Then they'd return the $3000+ Mac, buy a $1000 Dell, keep the saved money and everyone would be happy. But he decided to be deliberately offensive by destroying his gift without even using it once. This shows a level of contempt that any normal parent should find insulting beyond belief.
Of course, these parents did spend thousands of dollars on a present without first finding out what the kid wanted. So they're also a bunch of idiots.
I think we should just rid the human race of that entire family. Soylent Green's too good for them.

I think people are bent out of shape partly because of their connection to Apple and brand loyalty.
But more so because of the shear stupidity of it all. He trashed a $3,000 for the case. Read that line again. Think about it. The case. How much does a good case cost? $50-$120? He could have just as easily gone out, spent the cash and had not only this sweet dual G5 but this other XP system that he wanted to keep. Its asinine in the extreme.
Beyond that you are right. People waste things all the time, isn't that the American way?, but we aren't talking about buying a 6 pack and drinking only one. We aren't talking about buying a mouse keyboard combo pack and using only the mouse. This is a freaking high-end computer that was pillaged in the name of using just the case.
To further kick dirt in the face of the Mac user he put a PC in it. And to top it off he spit in the face of most Mac users by putting an underpowered POS in it. I personally am not too concerned or even care what he puts in the thing. What irks me is that he tore apart a $3,000 computer that was given to him as a gift. The moron could have been at least a little creative. Think G5 home server. *drools* But no. I think Mac users have every right to be at minimum a little irked. Any computer enthusiast be it a Windows user or a Mac user would look at this and say "What a moron"

erm just because he didnt take pics of the entire process doesnt mean he didnt do it. Those pictures were too good to be photoshopped.
Eh who cares. Last night I sent him some flame mail telling him if he waited a few more months he would have been able to use VPC 7, and it would be faster than that POS athlon. Because G5s are made from ambrosia and holy aluminum and the chips come from a sanctified chip factory in Fishkill. Really though i'd say since G5s are under a year old they're all under AppleCare and thus they'd prolly all be back at Apple or at CompUSAs.

Not doubting the possibility, i found a pricelist for replacement parts for g4's once. a replacement case was something like $350. I'm imagining that the g5 case would cost at least $100 more.
so either he destroyed a $3k computer, or a $4XX case.

Keep in mind the first picture shows a complete PowerMac not just the case and also look at the flash between the various pictures it looks remarkably similar in every shot. Also someone suggested that they may have gotten this as a defunct product. If that was the case don't you think if nothing else someone would have salvaged the video card, RAM, DVD-ROM drive, hard drive, before giving it away? Look at the picture. Its a complete system.
Finally while its possible that someone may have found this dumpster diving its HIGHLY unlikely. As someone else stated these units are still under the one year warrantee and if someone spent $3,000 on a system the average person would get it fixed not toss it. Then again you have this moron so....
Sorry guys but move on to the next stage of the grieving process because IMHO this looks like the real *gags* deal.

Wow, I can barely believe I read every single post to this point, but like someone said earlier, it IS like a good horror movie. I like the conspiracy theories; some Wintel fan trolling the entire online Mac community and what have you. But ultimately, I have to agree - if real, this kid is a real passive aggressive little 5h1thead for doing something like this intentionally knowing the gift meant a lot to his parents, but that they also were idiots for dropping that kind of scratch without really knowing what their ingrate son wanted. And it really did turn my stomach to see the "after" pictures - I can't even convince my wife that it would be worth it for me to buy a 15" PowerBook, let alone a top of the line desktop system. But I did think the "before" picture looked oddly like the stock photos that were everywhere when the dual 2 was first announced. . .

Or he should have explained the difference because to a lot of folks all computers are alike. he didnt want to hurt their feelings so the next time they see him they will see this G5 case sitting there with no idea whats inside. he did state he had all PC software and if he sold the machine then his parents would know it was gone. His parents should have bought him a Dell. Imagine getting video cards or Pc software what the heck is a Mac user going to do with them? Seems he thought enough of his parents as to not hurt their feelings. Chalk up 1 sale for Apple.

There are some things that simply defy common sense, and whats indicated in folks that do those kinds of things is a disconnect from normal cognition or maybe even some horrible brain malfunction. My guess is that he's young, spoiled, and acts on impulse due to an overabundance of testosterone. Whatever the reason, this guy can't go through his life like that. I'll pray to my god for him.

Looking at the "before" and "after" pics, I am starting to think this is a hoax. The picture quality in the first (complete G5) pic is noticably better than the subsequent pics. Open them in Photoshop for comparison, and zoom to 200%: the first pic is very clean and sharp; I think the later pics look more noisy. Also the white balance is slightly different (as if taken by a different camera).
Also, the author has been careful to crop out the background in the first pic- not so the subsequent ones.
Methinks someone got hold of an empty G5 case and thought they'd have a laugh... :o

Man. I just can't not post about this. At length. And in detail.
It just makes me sick. Not because this idiot kid ruined a G5 specifically, or put a PC in a Mac; but because:
1) He had no regard for a thing of quality and beauty, and butchered it. Even HE says that he's "NEVER seen a finer made case." Did it occur to him that the Mac, OS X, and the included software (MORE than sufficient for his original intended purposes of "Internet, [and] ripping music/DVDs") might be JUST as finely made?
2) He gets this expensive computer as a Christmas present from his parents, and doesn't have the balls to tell them that it's not what he wanted--not even that he can't use it with his existing software. He says, "It’s a good thing my parents don’t know anything about computers, because I’m sure they would be really angry if they knew what I did." Then why didn't he just go to them and say, hey Mom and Dad, thanks, but this won't run my programs, and I was really hoping for a Dell? Instead he goes behind their backs and ruins their gift, while making sure they won't notice. What does that tell you about this kid's relationship with his parents?
3) Some posters are saying this can't be real, but I say it is, because it's perfectly in character for a sophomoric little teen twit who would hack up expensive electronics to suit a spoiled whim to make this remark: "When I showed my friend, who happens to love Apple, he looked sick....I wish I had a picture of that." Anyone that derives pleasure from annoying others like this hasn't grown up yet. What an immature jerk.
4) Not only does he destroy something incredibly well-made and replace it with crap, he obviously doesn't know crap when he sees it: "Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure G5 is a great computer, but I wanted a Dell....I have to say that I'm happy - I can keep on using XP."
All of this isn't just offensive to Mac users. It's symptomatic of the dumbing-down of our culture, of the everyday "good enough" where people used to strive for the best, of the daily triumph of callousness and mediocrity. It's just WRONG on so very many levels completely unrelated to Apple.
If you made it through this thread, much less this post, I salute you. :)

yes, this things makes me feel sick everything im reminded of it, and seeing people making this kind of thread every few days again and again is not helping.
i think there are about 5 of these in Macrumors alone.
and i agree completely with your views. it's not that he likes XP, but that he can't recognize something good when he sees it. urgh, makes me sick.

This was my reaction the instant I read it as well. I think some one is just having some fun with us. If he knows how to put together a computer, he would at least no the value of what he tore out of the G5 tower. Why give it it away to his friend, I am sure that he could have sold just the G5 chips on eBay. There are plenty of people who like to get their hands on one and try to assemble their own Mac Clone! I suspect that some one built something out of a G5 and then had fun with the case.
I am convinced this is a hoax. It is so perfectly written to annoy Mac fans. "I wanted a Dell", "I am so happy I can use XP", etc. To me, it seems like a sick attempt at humor.
Why not just say to his parents, "I don't know how to use a Mac, get me a PC instead." Clearly, if he were real he is spoiled enough that they would have said, "Of course honey, whatever you want."
I read through the forums over on the overclockers page where he posted it. They are not exactly singing his praises in the PC world either. Does any one here read that page regularly, I was trying to figure out how you submit your work for posting. I think that is a hoax, because why would a page about overclocking give directions on how to replace your MB with a vastly inferior one.
But, I do agree with the people who said that the thread is entertaining, a nice break from the "New (insert G5's, PB's, iMac, etc. here) Next Tuesday, I guarantee it" threads that have dominated the boards since MWSF.

The operative phrase here is "If I want to buy".
If you buy something, by all means, do what you want to it.
But he didn't buy this Mac. His parents gave it to him as a gift. To destroy an expensive gift (especially from a close relative) immediately after receiving it is simply wrong, from every point of view you care to look at it from. If your parents give you an expensive gift that you can't use, you politely talk to them and see about exchanging it for something else. You don't destroy it.
Unless you hate your parents, of course, which this little twerp obviously does.

okay man what do people not understand about there being a PAGE 2 to the entire goddamned thing?!!!! He tells everyone what he did with the G5 parts after he was done with his little stunt. Lucky Mac user, got around $2500 in parts, damn. I wish i was the mac user but hey i cant get everything in life.
Now, for those of you who think this thing is totally a hoax I doubt it. But yes it seems like it was meant to piss off Mac users...because it clearly was labeled (on the overclockers.com homepage) that it was not meant for "macphiles".
Okay, now that everyone's sorta over this can someone tell me why this is on overclockers.com? OVERCLOCKERS!!! freak, what that guy did was not a mac/pc mod, it was NOT overclocking anything (more like underclocking...that crap athlon if it is an athlon is nothing compared to dual g5s)....the only reason it appears to be there is because the author didnt know where else to put it. GODDAMN I STILL WANT TO RIP HIM APART INTO PIECES GRRRRRRRRRR
oh btw, if you read the overclockers forum, someone describes the parts he uses...heres a snippet:
Originally from the oc.com forums
First off, let me just say, in the pic of the board, I don't see an AthlonXP 2200. I see a ceramic substrate which says Tbird or Duron. And I also see an Antec Jetcool HSF, which probably couldn't cool an XP.

Anyone who hasn't yet done so should defintely go read the Overclockers forums (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=266451) on this article.
The more you read the less likely the story seems to be true. There are more inconsistencies than I originally noticed (at one point he wanted a Dell, later he wants an AMD board - I don't know much about Dell but I guess they only use Intel chips) also they have pretty much agreed over there that the board that he put in is not what he claims. The SCSI card he claims to have is missing. Personally, I see only one drive installed (in the optical bay - the SuperDrive has been removed) and he claims to have two 36Gb drives.
Also, a pic showing it running at the end would have been nice, the only thing we ever see powered up is the green light.
I think in the article he knows a little bit too much about computer components to not know what the G5's were worth.
I think somewhere, some one, is laughing at us.

Coming from the Overclockers forum here;
I've always found once you hit the upper echelons of computer users that the Mac/PC debate tends to get a lot more put in the background. The architectures have their strengths and anyone who doesn't recognize it is ignorant.
But yeah; I have to say this is a pretty stupid thing to do; I'm suspicious its a prank but who knows.

I know why most of you are so upset. it's not that someone took something what they have and modified it to their liking. After all, who are we to tell someone not to change something they have? Yeah, he put an inferior engine in a G5 case, so what? The kid likes XP. I think it is rather inventive, and an ambitious undertaking. You want to tell his parents? Do you think they care? He is getting satisfaction out of a gift.
No, the reason you care so much and are acting as irrationally is becuase you are jealous. Get over it. There are rich people in the world. 3 grand means to them what 3 cents does to you. Its his box to modify if he wants. Now the pictures of that processor made me sick, and I would never do that to a G5, but it is not my machine, so who cares.
Actually the green lights in it were kinda cool. I nver thought about letting light shine thru the metal mesh.

No it bothers me because of the irrational ignorance shown in the act. He didn't have a clue what he had. It's like giving a caveman a nice dry house to live in and then destroys it and uses it for firewood in his cave. It's not the act it's the lack of knowledge behind it. It's the thought that somehow you could have saved this kid from a huge mistake if just somehow he would have talked about doing it prior to the actual job.
As I've said time and time again I could care less if someone buys a thousand G5s to run them over with a steam roller or blow them up that's fine at least they know what they are doing. It's the lack of knowledge that led this kid to the point of tearing apart a far faster machine so he could use the pretty case that he destroyed I might add for his slow poke old AMD.

I still suspect that this was done by some one who removed the innards for another reason. Maybe some one decided to mod a G5 into a new case to give it two optical drive bays, a zip drive, extra HD's, etc. Then realizing he could fun with a lot of people put the other board into the G5 case.

Wow... I've been reading about this hack job for days now, but just got the page with photos to finally pull up successfully. (I guess their web server is overloaded.)
Even understanding that some people just don't have any respect for Apple products - this seems incredibly short-sighted. I mean, surely this kid heard enough about the G5 to know it's a dual *64 bit* processor system, and is in high demand in some circles? If he's a regular on an overclocking/case-modding PC forum, I'd think he'd surely know that much. (Sites like ArsTechnica often talk about the G5 systems, even if it's only commentary about it being "Apple's first REAL machine, ever." and so forth.)
Apple has more "street credibility" now than they've had in years, especially with the younger crowd (who think highly of devices like the iPod).
It blows my mind this kid would still opt to tear one of these expensive, new systems apart without even trying it out for a little while first, and then waste more money on stuff like the green neon internal lighting he slapped in it.
He's most certainly spoiled, if his folks know "nothing about computers" and still thought the dual 2.0Ghz G5 was the system he should have for Xmas (even if he wanted a Dell instead)!?!
Me thinks maybe his folks know more than he gives them credit for... and realized a new Mac would be far superior to a PC?

People waste things all the time. At least this way Apple made a sale.
You're completely missing the point. 1. This kid was given a G5 for Christmas and knew exactly how happy his parents were to give it to him. He completely destroyed it and basically is lying about it to them, indirectly and probably directly (i.e. how do you like the computer, son?). 2. There are so many people in the world who would love to own a DUAL G5, including myself, who can't afford one. People are becoming more inconsiderate all the time and this makes my opinion obvious. This guy (or girl, I suppose although I don't see a woman destroying something so beautiful without even checking up on it, even if she's ditzy...edit: oh wait it was a guy) was given one and he utterly ruined it! His mod wasn't even tasteful, especially with an ugly green neon. Blue would've been better and white would've been perfect........IF APPLE DID IT! This kid is no engineer, and what's worse is that he has no sense. He knew it was a beatiful case and he didn't care. For the first time since I entered the forums I've actually enjoyed and found car analogies perfectly apllicable! So I'll thus add my own, from Lewis Black, of course!
This guy practically looked at the G5 and saw it for all it's luster and perfectness and basically said oh look at this beautiful Enzo (I actually prefer the 360 but the monetary difference is a better analogy) but GOD! "I...I...I gotta have the Horizon. Are you kidding me? I've never driven a car that's aqua!"
His title should have been "How I became a freaking IDIOT!" He didn't even know to use an article or something before he said something like "I'm sure G5 is a great computer..." Could he not have just used the word "the"!

I agree except for the parents. They could've asked but what a suprise that would have been....I told my friend that same thing though, why didn't he just say something to the effect of: "This thing is beautiful, but ti's not really what I was hoping for since none of the programs I have can run on it yet...besides, you spent way too much on it, I only need a computer that costs about $1000." If I were the parents and I found out, the next Christmas (If I had the money of course) I would ask his friend if he were able to put the G5 parts in his G3 and if he'd gotten rid of them yet. Then I'd do 1 of two things. 1. (Most likely though I thought about it just now :)) Ask him for the Beige G3 tower and innards and then reassemble it after I gave him my sons "modded" G5 case. I'd then take the PC parts (ooh have another different idea here :D) with me. On Christmas morning he'd be like where has my G5 been for the past week? And I'd tell him that we "modded it" a little better than his previous "overclock" mod, all while acting like I know jack about computers! He'd open up the G3 and be like WTF? I'd then throw the Athlon BS at him and tell him I hope he likes the idea of buying his own Christmas presents from now on! Later we'd go as a family to his friend's house where I'd be carrying a large package. When we got there I'd give his friend the package, which he'd open up to find a brand spanking new Dual G5 and I'd tell my son that that's how you show appreciation for what you've been given. (Besides now his friend's under my control :D....J/K)
-or-
2. Do pretty much the same except put his PC components in the G3 tower and leave it on his desk. And then give his friend the G5 as described...
I seriously hope, as I'm sure a lot of you will as well, that Steve Jobs does indeed find out go to his house and leave with **** on his shoes! Then his friend walks by and immediately knows what happened and applauds!

I actually told me friend, even though it's really mean (but hey he nearly deserves it, well he does, just not his parents :)), that I hope his house burns down, or even just the computer itself, and all that is left is the case. It'd be completely empty and he'd finally realize that Apples won't tolerate such BS!

Regardless of how much this means relative to different people's monetary standing (even though from his writing it seems like they worked a lot to buy him that computer or else they probably would have cared less, and doubtfully would care if he "modded" it...), the fact remains that there are people in this world who are not grateful and they ruin things that others should use. Do you think it'd be right if I had enough money to buy everything in a Publix store and then let it all sit out or light it on fire? Yeah that's a great food mod lemme tell you! And then have the audacity to show it in a public forum where a huge amount of hungry starved children and homeless people could watch it all burn down in flames? Is this example that extreme compared to what this kid did? I think not! It's highly relevant to what this idiot did. There are not even enough words in the english language to explain how mind-blowingly stupid this kid is!
Maybe an extreme example might help? If you took every single synonym for the word stupid, and every single synonym for those words and took them all to the superlative degree, and had every single mac user (and a few PC users too it seems :D) yell at the top of their lungs all of the words into a huge funnel with a hose attached to a stethoscope in his ears he'd probably still not understand how stupid he actually is. Forrest Gump has words up on this guy. Next to him, Forrest looks downright gifted...as if he has much potential!

I feel good for two reasons:
1) I had assumed this was a fake way back when I first read the thread (I swear it go back and check my posts).
2) I think many people realize that maybe we take things a little to seriously sometimes. (I am a Mac Zealot, but I still think it was a funny prank).
3) Now we can all go back to our "New Powerbooks Next Tuesday" threads!

I think that most people here, even the 'fanboys' (by the way I really hate that expression) were sickened and angered by this persons apparant stupidity and wastefulness rather than the destruction of a G5. Although that in itself wouldn't be a pleasent site for anyone to see, I don't think it's what caused most of the upset.

Agreed as many people at OC.com were just as upset it wasn't a Mac or PC thing it was the level of stupidity shown by the character in the story.

here is G5 killers letter of explanation just so you don't have to lick the link.
I have been feeling a little guilty about causing so many people out there to have nightmares, depression and sickness from my little joke. The reaction of people word wide has blown me away. I never intended for such a thing to happen.
My in box went from 1% to 100% in 2 days (1300 messages). So many people were pointing out what a stupid thing to do, so many people were telling me of feeling sick, some even said they cried. I felt bad for those people. It was amusing to read things like "I should be hung by my testicles and lit on fire" or the constant reference to "Taking a Porsche and replacing the engine with a KIAs". Most people cried out in horror and carefully pointed out the error of doing such a silly thing.
I am sure you are wondering why this all took place.
Are the pictures real? Yes.
Is it my own G5 case that has been cut and hacked? Yes.
Did I give away two G5 2GHz processors (IBM PC 970)? No!
So what happened?
I got a free G5 shell from a buddy of mine and pulled a prank on a Mac loving friend. He got so upset. I wrote up a little story, my imagination and warped sense of humor kicked in. I sent it to OC.com just to see the reaction. I honestly didn't think it was going to be posted. I cannot believe how fast or how far it has spread on the internet. There are an amazing number of people who are emotionally attached to inanimate objects such as computers. Mac fans seem to be much worse that I ever expected. The G5 is amazing, I would never dream of really doing that ;)

I don't really care whether this was a hoax or not. I guess that probably wasn't obvious in my posts, I was going based on the asumption that it was real despite it sounding pretty fake....in any case....I'm still pissed! Why? That case is still worthy of much better parts than that! I mean geez....
I think however that it would be somewhat funny if his hoax letter was a hoax just so we'll stop emailing him and he is that much of an idiot :D Still, the case is worth much, much more than those parts than he put into it! I don't even think he deserves the case!

I didn't over react like others did but just found it stupid for a few reasons:
1. I couldn't believe anyone could be so heartless towards a gift like that. If my parents were to give me even a crappy eMachines, I'd still tell them how much I loved it and put it to use because I know they aren't rich and know that they try hard to do good when they find me a gift and I appreciate their efforts.
2. He said he wanted a Dell then said he wanted an AMD box. Dell doesn't make AMD, so what the heck?
3. He said he couldn't use a Mac because he didn't have the right software for it. At the end of the article he said all he does on his new "PC" was basically internet and DVD ripping. All Macs come with 2 web browsers installed (Safari and IE) and you could download 1,000's of internet applications for free for OS X and there are plenty of free DVD programs out there to do anything you wish, which are also all for free. In the end, a PowerMac could do everything he said he did without having to spend a single penny on any program.

Actually, on second thought, I didn't take offense. I never take offense to anything unless it's directed toward me (I don't understand how certain things offed people, like Janet's boob....how does that "offend" someone?) However I did hate that this guy, even by doing a hoax (which is probably even worse), continues to advance America's (and probably other places as well) biggest problem...the plague of our time, actually the plague of all American time: IDIOCY! :D

Yep! That's pretty much where I was coming from. Jealousy? Maybe a small tinge - but that wasn't really the main factor, nor was it some sort of emotional attachment to inanimate objects.
The bottom line is, there are a lot of folks out there right now bragging about "cool mods" to expensive products (whether it be new cars or computer systems), and many of these changes aren't really good for the resale value of the items. I have no problem with people having the right to do whatever they want with something they own. But effectively ruining the resale value of a product by pouring money and effort into fruitless and ill-conceived ideas is always hard to accept, without at least trying to educate the person first.
I'm glad to hear this was just a hoax, and in hind-sight, it is rather humorous - just because of how cleverly it was put together, and how fast and far word got around about it.
But I'll tell you, I own a Toyota Supra twin-turbo sports car (which I really had to sacrifice to purchase, and which continues to be pretty tough for me to afford), and it does sicken me to see the way some folks butcher up these cars. I believe only about 420 were made of the exact type/model I have, in the year it was manufactured (1997), and I bet you'd be hard pressed to find 1/3rd. of them left in original, factory condition today. Movies like "The Fast and the Furious" glorify the idea of slapping outrageous body kits, gawdy paint jobs and neon all over these cars and making them "cool" -- but how many people older than perhaps their mid-20's wants to drive around a car with flames or dragons painted down the side of it? If the teens spending thousands of bucks on this sort of thing would stop and think about the "long term" instead of the "here and now" - they could find much more productive things to do with that money.
