I registered for the Seattle, WA instance of this on December 9, but haven't received a confirmation yet.
If you have registered, for which location? Have you received a confirmation yet?

I registered yesterday for the Chicago one.
I got the email stating they received my request, but I have not received a confirmation as of yet.
When did registrations open up for this event?
As I was pretty surprised that the New York event was already sold out, but no other city and that now 24 hours later, no confirmation.
I would think it would be:
Query: Is there space available?
Yes: Send Confirmation, take away one seat
No: Send our apologizes, and recommend the next closest city as an option.
Are they picking and choosing based on the answers to the questions on the signup form?

Seems like it. I registered for the London one yesterday evening around 20:00. At that time London wasn't full. I got my confirmation email literally 1 minute later to say this is just a reciept of my application - it's not a "Yes" at this point. "Cool..", I thought - at least I got in before it said Full!
Anyhow - when I checked the website around 23:30, it said London was full .
To date, I have not recieved a "Yes" (has anyone?!?) so I guess they're not doing a 'first come, first served' basis but may be selecting based on other criteria.
We'll see...

This page http://developer.apple.com/events/iphone/techtalks/
now lists every city in the North American part of the tour as now full.

I registered for Seattle on Oct 9 as well (knowing ahead of time that it's full). Here's the confirmation I got:

This location is currently at capacity and your registration has been placed on a waiting list. We will contact you should space become available or if we add new dates to this location.

Interesting in an probably unfortunate (for me) sort of way, as I didn't even get that.
The invitation hit my email account at 12:03 AM this (Friday) morning, and I got my 'this is not a confirmation' receipt at 5:48 AM this morning. If you signed up yesterday, how did you learn of it?

I first heard about it from our very own MacRumors site (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/10/09/apple-launches-iphone-developer-tech-talks/).

I saw London was full at the similar time...
But I registered anyway, then sent me an email to say that I am put into the waiting list.
Hope I can attend it.

Well it is now Sunday.
I have only received the email that they got my request..
I still have not gotten a confirmation that I can attend (and hopefully details on WHERE in Chicago it will be), nor have I gotten a message that I was added to a waiting list.
Hopefully by the end of next week, we will hear something.
I feel sorry for those that have to make travel plans to attend.

Anybody get any confirmation yet?
Me neither. I've concluded that given the total lack of response my chances of getting in to the Seattle version of this event are pretty much zero unless there are a huge number of last-minute cancellations. At least I have no travel plans to cancel.

Still haven't gotten a confirmation here.
Two emails to the contact email address, asking for some sort of confirmation (either I can go, or I am on a waiting list) still have gone un-answered.
And I have confirmed at least 15 other people that submitted to the Chicago event, that haven't heard either way. And we all submitted with in a few hours of the email that was sent out, before any "full" notice was posted.
Other people that have applied late, got Waiting List confirmations with in minutes.

Just received my denial for the tech talk in LA. I registered before the page showed that it was full, but apparently being a paying developing company wasn’t good enough. :(

Nothing here either.
I was thinking after submitting my reservation request - Do you think Apple is evil enough to give priority to those who said they develop paid/commercial apps?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the format of the Tech Talks.. a bit like a lecture?
ie: sit there with a pad/laptop and scribble away?
Thanks.

Got mine for Hong Kong along with 2 of my employees.

Looks like they are approving / rejecting in the order of the scheduled date of Talk. From what I read online people already recving confirmations were LA, then Austin, and yesterday Chicago. New York should be next then Toronto. I got denied for Chicago Yesterday (I was wait listed as I registered after it was full) So not even on a list anymore and I guess they aint adding any more dates there. I also signed up for Toronto before it was full, so there is still hope.

I talked with someone who said they were originally on the wait list, but then was invited to attend at the last minute.
He said that both developers who had apps in the store, and developers who hadn't yet finished apps, were in attendance.
The talks were very similar to the WWDC iPhone sessions, but updated with some new information. Still all confidential material, as the new NDA hasn't yet been officially posted by Apple.

Biggest message I heard about from the tech sessions: read the HIG (human interface guidelines) front-to-back, design the app to look good and work well before starting to code, and look at all the example code. Developers are still inventing poor UI's where the HIG already shows a better way, and coding broken stuff with poor performance, where somewhere hidden in the example code on Apple's dev site is code that works much better.

Well for those of us signed up for Seattle that still haven't heard, that's good news in a way since no news isn't the same as 'no'.

Ha ha, I was pissed. I signed up before Apple even sent out the emails and the news was subsequently announced everywhere because I saw that Michael Jurewitz mentioned it.
Then I got a rejection email (for the LA one), not even a waitlisted one. I was convinced it was because I had attended WWDC, until I found two friends where that wasn't the case with them, but then I knew a dozen others that were rejected that went to WWDC. Out of everyone I knew/knew of who applied it was a hodgepodge of developers who all were paid iPhone devs who have and haven't released anything who did or did not attend WWDC who may have been self employed or worked for a company and people who applied before or after me...and the people who got acceptance emails were really random.
I'm fairly convinced the selection is random, and if not, then it sure as hell looks random.
Buuut even though I missed out on that, I have wwdc videos now, which sort of make up for it. So I'm over it now :D

Where did you get the videos from WWDC? I am waiting for them since the WWDC because I couldn't attend it, but do not find them for download somewhere (I'm a paid Select Member and iPhone Standard Program Developer). On the WWDC Website I can only see "They will be soon available"...

All WWDC attendees got an email about it a couple days ago, and they are available through ADC on iTunes. I can only assume they're going to be soon available for all other paid ADC members..but afaik I don't think Select members got WWDC 2007 videos either?

Oct 28, 2008, 12:31 AM
That's right, but Select Members got the Foundational Sessions to 2006, and only the Leopard Sessions of 2007. So I think, we'll get parts of it. But Apple announced, that the WWDC was sold out and all videos would be available on a "pay basis"...

I don't know if they're confirming out-of-towners. But after having been to one of the tech talks, IMHO if you aren't local, its probably not worth your time (and money) to travel to the talk. It is indeed just a "talk" - there's no hands on stuff, other than the technical q&a thing, and if you're going to get q&a help, plan on skipping one or more of the talk sessions to wait for a tech.
They've posted some sample code on the tech talks website (http://developer.apple.com/events/iphone/techtalks/) that any registered developer can download. (Click on the session name to get the sample code link.) Though at first glance it appears that a lot of the samples are the same sample programs that are on the developer website.

I did attend the one in Chicago and I am from out of town. It was very much worth the time and the money for the travel. I highly recommend attending and I want to thank Apple for having the talks. I especially want to thank the evangelists and the techs for their ideas, their talks and their help.

Thanks Linda,
So there is still some hope for me. I actually tried to get into the chicago one after it was marked full but was surprised that it was actually cheaper to fly and spend 3 days in Toronto. Im from south east US. I havent used any of the training budget for the year and was glad to hear you thought it was worth it. I also appreciate the comments from tsornin. Its nice getting alternate point of views. I just hope I hear something before hotel and flight costs change.

If you don't get invited. I was at the London one and it is a total waste of time for anybody who has spent more than 5 minutes reviewing the SDK. Such exciting topics as when do you use a toolbar vs a navigation bar.

It's not total fluff. If you've already written a full featured app (that uses multitouch, networking, animation, sound, etc.), 80% might seem like review, repeating a lot of what's on the dev center and WWDC videos. But I found 10% refreshed very useful stuff that I'd forgotten. And 10% appeared to me to be updated or new material.
The best part was talking to Apple engineers, getting their business cards, and asking a few questions that they could actually answer on the spot. Also good was making contacts with other lots of other developers, and getting some general market info.
