"eWEEK's Chris Preimesberger explains how Sun Microsystems has completely discarded RAID volume management in its new Amber Road storage boxes, released today. Because it uses the Zettabyte File System, the Amber Road has eliminated the use of RAID arrays, RAID controllers and volume management software — meaning that it's very fast and easy to use."
Could this find its way into OS-X? What do you think?

I thought ZFS was already confirmed for Snow Leopard?
edit: it is for Snow Leopard Server - http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=335

ZFS+ read capability was confirmed for SL. SL Server has both write and read capabilities confirmed. I hope SL has write capability as well, there's not that much code to write in addition to SL.

When drive pooling and live / hot swapping drives into a pool gets to the point where it can be done on a Mac Pro, it will be a very nice treat for small businesses running Macs.

You don't gain a lot with ZFS until you have more than one or two disk drives. OK there are some things you get with just one drive, like point in time snapshots but the stuff they are talking about here apply the system with many disk drives. The system Sun is selling here have dozens of drives.
If you want to learn about ZFS so you can get a preview of what's comming on SL, you can do it using a Mac. Get VMware Fusion. Then go to the Sun web site and download the VMware image of Solaris. Solaris runs well on an iMac.

They didn't discard RAID. The new appliances have it.
