Great shot, Doylem. As usual, fantastic composition and it's a genuinely interesting picture.
I also liked Educ8r's shot. I'm a sucker for DOF. Love the placement of the presents.
We're sure starting December off with a bang, aren't we?
(PS. In reply to timmyb from last month's thread, thanks! It was a neat little run of experimental shots that that specific picture came out of. Nothing like running around in the yard with some paper airplanes! :p)

Meh.... Plaza Lighting Ceremony, Thanksgiving night, Kansas City, Missouri. I did NOT enjoy myself this year. Same damn thing every year anyway so I might start skipping the pomp and circumstance of the official lighting anyway in coming years.
Also, no HDR on this one, if ya can believe it.

shoot always shoot at ISO 100 unless you have to go higher. With this, you could have shot at ISO 100 and 1/400th and still got it, with less noise. Although I will agree, even at ISO 200 that seems like too much. How close is this crop?
edit: here's mine, another view of the dam. not a great composition, but I like the elements within it. Same settings as the other one. And I need to clean my sensor.

Wow, that is pretty noisy. Does that noise show up in the RAW file or is it just an artifact of the web-compatible JPEG compression?

It's part of the tradition of Sinterklaas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas) (dutch santa). Every year there are some (political correct) voices that want to change this custom ( no colours, different colours). However they underestimate the children. Children don't associate these overly dressed persons with too much makeup with coloured people in society. They see it as a character of the story of Sinterklaas. But I can see how this photo must look to people in other parts of the world that are not familiar with the story of Sinterklaas.

In reply to the last two posts. It was taken as a jpg and has been cropped quite a bit (I can't remember exactly how much). The noise shows up in the full size photo. My old 350D was OK at 400 and even 800 iso. I'll have to check all my settings as I would expect the 50D to be equal or better than the 350D even taking into account the higher pixel count.

Really, really nice. Especially like all the people, it looks like a party. Did you shoot any from lower down? Seems like this might be even more dynamic if it was shot from like 1-2 feet off the ground.

True... Arthur Ransome lived most of his life less than three miles from my lakeside shack. I grew up on 'Swallows and Amazons' ("if duffers, won't drown, etc).
Ransome had an extraordinary life: he was a spy in Russia, and married Trotskey's secretary... :)

Thanks... and I like the Paris shot. I feel I can wander all those streets (some I know... most I don't).
You'll enjoy the freedom of using a tripod. Sounds contradictory, but I love to set a shot up, and shoot as the light changes. It means I can walk around, eat a sandwich, and the composition is fixed (incidentally, this makes it easier, when reviewing the pix later, to find the best shot out of 20 or 30 or more)...

I would crop this one differently to reduce the amount of sky and to give the tower more emphasis. The blue rays emanating from the tower look great, but they kind of get lost in the composition.

My eye gets drawn to the text on the ship and then over to the bright (stadium?) lights at the left. I'd say crop out the stadium and much of the sky, but then you'd still be left with a photo that lacks enough tonal range and zones of depth to be really interesting. The ship is rather "close" to the line of the waterfront, making that horizontal zone feel rather compressed and the rest of the frame rather vacuous.

Well spotted, poignant subject, and great lighting aside from the photographer's shadow in the shot. If only it had a shallower depth of field or else a vantage point that minimized the distraction of the barn in the background.

I don't like taking photos featuring people I don't know; it always feels like I'm intruding in some way. However I got this one and rather like it.

Your pic's waaaaay too big for my monitor...
I don't like taking photos featuring people I don't know; it always feels like I'm intruding in some way.
It can seem quite threatening to point a camera at people, and using a telephoto lens only makes it worse (you feel like a sniper ).
But most people love being in pictures; they only want to know why you're taking them.
I give people my card and ask them to email me... so I can send the best of the pix I took (some do, some don't...). This seems especially important with families, kids, etc.
This isn't an HDR pic; it's a pic on which I used HDR. There's a difference... to me, at least... ;)

Phrasikleia thanks for your comment.
Doylem realy like your "hdr"pic, it's like a fairytale!
I find it a bit hard to take pictures now when it's winter, a lot of snow here, so blowouts, or what it's called.
Anything special to think about? low iso, "fast" exposure, what about the aperture if i want the unfocus area to be blurry, hope you understand that :)
A new B&W pic, is it to much free "air" around it? C&C?

I like this picture. The snow is an unexpected element, so it holds my interest. It's also a good use of B&W. To answer your question, no, I don't think it has too much negative space; I think the composition works.

While a polariser can be useful near water (for getting rid of unwanted reflections), what's making your shot flat is just lack of light... that's all. :)

I think the lighting works well enough, and the peaks dusted with snow make a nice background, especially set against a pretty blue sky like that. However, this image probably would have worked better as a vertical. The female is cropped too much by the bottom of the frame. Also, the "line" where the golden grass meets the green trees is running right across the middle of the frame, which isn't the best compositional situation. Try to place lines like that at the "thirds". Likewise, it's best not to place your subjects smack-dab in the middle of the frame; doing so just chops up the image too much, leaving negative space on either side of them. It's better to place your subjects on one side of the frame and thereby allow the setting to be more cohesive and dramatic.
Comments and critique please. I'm just starting out and really want develop my skills.

This one also has compositional problems. You have a lot of sky, a lot of dark hill at the left, and what one presumes is the subject (the dead tree) is pretty much right in the middle of everything. I wonder what it would have looked like if you had gone with a horizontal framing, placing the tree towards the left, and allowing more of the better-lit side of the lake into the shot. I also would have crouched down a bit to hide the structure visible just below the tree (a drain pipe?).

Thanks for your C&C. I did take other photos that positioned the family more off-centered, but the baby was frowning, and lighting more stark (the flash couldn't fill the shadows) I did, however, crop the photo differently, hopefully it helps...

Thanks for critique. Compositions is one of my weak spots.
When you look through the viewfinder, you've got to think "Is this exactly how I want my picture to look?"... because, once you've pressed the shutter, that's what you're going to get...
In general I'd suggest taking more time... to find the best viewpoint, and to fine-tune the composition by moving a few paces left or right... to make all the elements in a picture tell a 'story'. Most pix work best with a single subject: the element that caught your eye in the first place.
The camera captures everything, so look into all four corners of the pic, to check the composition is as you want it. What you leave out of a picture is just as important, IMO, as what you put in. :)

I wonder what it would have looked like if you had gone with a horizontal framing, placing the tree towards the left, and allowing more of the better-lit side of the lake into the shot.
I would agree. General rule for me (which I have been reminded of on more than one occasion) is that if I am shooting landscapes to shoot in landscape.
It is quite rare, not to mention pretty difficult, to shoot good looking landscapes in portrait format unless there is a very specific thing that you want the viewer's eyes to focus on.

My entry for today comes from bakersfield, ca. I actually didnt plan this shot, I kind of just stumbled upon it. I didnt have a tripod or anything with me so I had to shoot it handheld. Please C&C.
P.S. I know it may have not been framed as good as it could have been and some of the foreground stuff is a bit distracting but this was the shot I had the opportunity to take and I had to work with what I had. If you notice anything else that couldve been improved upon please let me know.

Skies are often beautiful, but more often than not, are not worth taking photos of. It's like taking photos of your feet, or taking photos of other people taking photos of you.
However, my first suggestion with this composition would be to change your angle of shooting, so that the sky fills at least two thirds of the frame. If you are going to include foreground, it should really be exposed so that it is identifiable, or completely underexposed so that it is silhouetted.
Your next assignment should be to shoot an interesting foreground subject with an interesting sky. Use HDR if necessary. My advice is to avoid shooting 'just skies' - unless you see the Virgin Mary or Jesus or someone in the cloud formations. Otherwise it's just not very creative or inspired, if you know what I mean.
Keep shooting! :)

correct. if you do not want to have "stars" around bright light sources you have to open up the aperture.

Southland, New Zealand.
For some reason the right one has a very HDR look to it, although I think it's probably just the effect of the sun shining on the land and everything else being in the dark.
Awesome shot, one of those moments of being in the right place at the right time :)

I love the Exif Viewer add-on for Firefox. It shows exif data for any photo, that wasn't edited too much. I find it work on most photos on this forum.

Well this shot was taken around evening at 4.30pm, it was a sunny day and the wind blowing is kinda cold, surprisingly there is some moisture on the flower petals and I guess its the lighting and some moisture that made me take this shot.
Some CnC would be nice. I tried photosig, the image size required to upload is too small.

Well, it's not the best flower shot I've seen, and it's not the worst. But something strange happened when it appeared: I could actually smell it!
Silly, I thought... so I tried it again. And there was that sweet (almost sickly) scent again. Strange...
Too many places in the Lake District are in private hands (a 'national park' in UK isn't like a national park in USA). Worse, landowners try to keep people away from some of the most iconic landscapes... for no better reason, it seems, than they can...
So I'm starting to do some 'ethical trespassing', and shoot pictures to highlight the problem...

Well I've been back to Dubai for about 2 days and so far snapped a few pics of the Burj Al Arab. The internet has been so slow at my house so I only uploaded 1 picture and Flickr is blocked in my area (dont ask, UAE laws sometimes are silly) so I am a little stuck and limited with choices.
Anyway bulk of my posting of pictures from the trip will be done when I get back, but here is one from today:

here's an interesting shot - I'm really only a beginning photographer, but as a macro shot with a kit lens it came out pretty good but feel free to criticize (or complement) note: this a crop of the original (the file size was too big so while i was playing with it I discovered that cropping the photo actually made it look better.

The exposure is great and the subject has potential, but I feel like that's all there is here. The flash illuminates the center quarter, and the left on is extremely clear, but the right one is completely out of focus and there is no background; no substance. Just as a criticism for a new photographer, but this seems a bit boring and one-sided (the quarters are standing on edge). Get your audience to feel. To think. To imagine. First, I think, you have to do those things and then your audience can. Sorry if that seems harsh, on meant as helpful criticism :D

148712Okay thanks for the constructive criticism and it happened to be a coincidence photo I saw a quarter standing on edge and I said oh this would make a cool photo. Let me post a different crop based on what you said. (it's mostly the original, just cropped a tad to make the file size smaller and the picture a little nicer)

I'm going to have a go at a bit of commentary...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3256/3113614955_91eda571a9_b.jpgI really like the gradation of white in the sky and how it can fill so much of the photo without it becoming boring. What's the EXIF for this? (I can't get it from my viewer.)
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/42/noaccess1ze3.jpgFantastic as always - particularly the warmth of the colours in the sun on the far side.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3003/3113004493_a26046d1d5_b.jpgI think it would be good to have either grass all across the back, or better crop it to just the flower; the two corners of grass draw my eye away from the centre. Also there's some odd sort of fuzz going on in the centre right of the flower.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/kettikpics/photos/29/images/pangong_reflection_gallery.jpgGreat reflections. I think it could do with a crop to reduce the amount of sky in the photo though.
Now here's one of mine - a frosty morning in the garden.

This is something that also shocked me when I visited the Lake District a few years ago. To think that people can own land and water access in a national park is ridiculous.
In New Zealand, water access is available to everyone. There's a thing called the 'Queen's Chain', which gives everyone the legal right to use the 20 metres of shore from the water, along any lake and seashore in the country. Also, no-one is allowed to live or build in a national park. I guess it's something to be grateful for. I'm sure Peter Rabbit would appreciate it.

I had to take some pictures for a class today and after failing to get a decent shot of a red poinsettia leaf, I went for a green one. I used a light to illuminate the back and wow.
Only post processing was the removal of objects to the right of the leaf and reduce clipping. Colours were not touched.
Feel free to C&C.

And thanks for the comment guys about the flower, I will keep on improving, yeah there is some sort of fuzz on the center right of the flower, I guess it has something to do with the lighting?
