View Full Version : Declining Production?

Do my eyes deceive me or is Team Macrumors in a rather heavy decline?

Does anyone know why we are dropping so massively right now?

I am checking some members now and then that I will be passing on the list. A lot of them fold for more then one team, others have stopped folding since the active processors in one week are standing on zero. So we have a lot of folders that are helping around if we really need them!

I think we may be having a tinker storm. My PCs have received nothing but tinkers since the 10th, I haven't checked the G5 but suspect the same has happened there as well. If you look at everyone's production, it seems to have suddenly leveled out.

MrMacMan
Feb 22, 2004, 03:01 PM
Yeah I'm kinda worrying...
SAGoons are now outproducing us...

And today we fell out of orange (less then 20k in 24 hours)...

Ech, come on guys...
Other teams have a slight loss of power... like a slow decline... but out loss rate is much higher...

My G4 is trying its best MrMacman. What is a Tinker Storm. We just need to have more G5's.

Vlade
Feb 22, 2004, 05:21 PM
Its because of the tinker storm, macs take a bigger hit on tinkers than PCs do, so thats why its effecting ALL of the mac teams. If you look around at folding-community.org you will see, they just added some new -advmethods gromacs units, so anyone using mc68k's scripts should hopefully get some new gromacs.

I noticed a decline over the weekend too. Maybe next week we'll get a boost.

I've been crunching the same WU since Thursday and its only 26% done. :( Must be a tinker.

Ah, more G5's would be vunderbar. I made up "tinker storm". I meant that there were a lot, a whole lot, of tinkers falling from the sky all at once. Meteor, tinker, whatever.

Oh, a "tinker" is a type of work unit that is, well, slow to process. Many don't like them because they are low points-wise if you were to do a points-per-clock cycle calculation. Not as bad as a genome, but they do take a while. 40 hours on a 2GHz G5. Causes your "production" to fall rather steeply, but if everyone is getting them, the playing field is still level.

Tinker and Gromacsare 2 types of units your computer gets.

Tinkers are for macs slower then gromacs.

For PC they are more balanced.

The 'tinker storm' seems to be a lot of tinker work units being given out.

You guys have noticed it too. The playing field definitely is not level! We at Team MacOS X are getting hammered hard as well. I'm talking our daily production was cut in half in a matter of four days! Check these stats from EOC. It is pretty U-G-L-Y! I fold with both Macs and PCs and have posted some unit disparity over at our forums. I'd like to have Vijay explain it to us.

i had to take my g5 off as my computer was severely screwed up, and it seemed to happen around the time i installed folding

i could put it back on, but not until after i'm done some important stuff that i've got going on right now... maybe in a few weeks

that's 1200 or so points a week, nothing huge, but just starting a head count of who has dropped out recently

Aww too bad man.

We haven't heard of any horror storys with folding at all, I doubt that was the problem.

1200 is no small sum, its very nice.

When your machine gets back on its feet please reinstall! :)

Folding members like 'Zeke' have been doing well until recently...

Ah damnit.

not so single out anyone, but Khaldei lost some good power. that exaplins the slight decline....

but the recent large-scale decline is clearly on stanford's end

servers being screwed up is usually reflected as everyone having lower output, which doesnt seem to be the case. so maybe the tinker hypothesis is a good one...or a decline in active members (new blood)

Yep the tinkers are hurting bad...

But look at the SaGoons...how have they not only countered that affect, but aren't even slowing down... geez... they only recruited like 1000 people in the past week... holy hell.

And some new blood would be nice :D

I can't explain our production struggle for sure, but logs like this put a dent in my contribution!

[16:03:40] + Working ...
[16:03:46] Folding@Home Client Core Version 2.47 (June 14, 2002)

and so on and so on until...

[07:50:15] Finished a frame (400)
[07:50:15] TINKER is Exiting following Normal Termination
[07:50:15]

it got done on the 24th.

Interesting though, now I'm back on gromacs again. Maybe it was a server issue at Stanford.

i am nice and flu-like right now, so i had a chance to do some remote maintenance on my machines. i had to (at least temporarily) disable 4 nighttime linux procs, but did fix a screwed up crontab on a 2x2GHz G5 (stupid typo) and a cleaned up 4 errant nighttime linux xeons (i'll have to keep an eye on them).

i also realized i am folding on a few macs i can't remember the hostnames of. they are probably doing ok. the macs do real well overall. hmm.

anyway, i might see a little more performance now.

Try to be patient MrMacman. The Rev. will be out soon, then there will be more G5's added.

MrMacman I was checking the Optimizing thread, your thoughts on Journaling? Or if I have UPS Backups Pro to shutdown my Mac if there is a power outage good enough? Along with my OWC Mercury Elite.

I haven't heard of Journaling increasing speed any...

Don't waste your UPS on your mac for long really, if you have a poweroutage, save all of your documents and stuff you have opened and shut the machine down -- you might need that power.

I don't know what OWC Mercury Elite is...

The OWC Mercury Elite is an external Firewire Hard Drive. 12 GB. It was recommended by Dr. Mac Bob Levitus at MYNY 2002, when I inquired for his opinion.

How do you figure that the UPS is a waste? It is set to do it automatically, if you happen to be away from home when a power outage might occur.

I am already using the OWC.

When the electricity goes off, the UPS immediately starts making an ear piercing sound. It will allow approximately 15 minutes to make backups and shutdown prior to the end of battery life.

I'm sorry that I confused you MrMacman. My actual question was to elicit your thoughts on Journaling. Not sure that I totally understand the function.

Journaling in a little more depth then apple gives it:
http://www.lafcpug.org/features_file_journaling.html

Its possible it will slow things that access your hard drive, but booting will be faster... ect.

On careful analysis, ;) I think some of the problem on production has been many of the small contributers have been dropping off. (Since our production per use has been spiking, and our number of active members has been dwindling.) It may take another membership drive to get us to break 30k a day....

Perhaps this should be in a different thread... but it relates to declining production. Mine, at least. I had three machines going with folding. One is a dual Athlon (Linux) running a single client. Recently it locked up several times, always sometime after starting the client.

If I don't start the client, it is fine. When I start it, it locks after a bit. So, it seems from my reading elsewhere that it could be a sign that I'm not cooling the CPU properly, although I ran the client for weeks straight without a problem. Can I assign the client to the other CPU to test if the other CPU is not cooling. Although I know some Unix, I am not certain how I would do that.

Could I have a bad unit that is giving the client conniptions? Do I delete something to start it fresh? I connect to this machine from home, so if it locks and I am away it is no fun.

I was doing 500 a week, and now I am treading water.

But, go ahead and characterize the whole team based on one person if you want. Our recruiting efforts speak for themselves. :)

edit - Besides, the characterization of the misinformation as

is less than truthful. It's the top-level page for a major section of the site and the text is in the 1st paragraph.

Seems more like a willful misrepresentation of the truth, especially since you were notified over a month ago.

Viewing the text I didn't demand that it be removed at once, I understand that it takes time for things to get done and your team agreeded, and then let the topic die, as it should have... I'm just trying to address your teams small issue.

Is my issue being friendly? I don't know about that, ask the dozens of people I have helped on this board... :p

All that I am characterizing is the treatment that I have received in a couple of post. I was hoping for a off topic, but I see that won't happen.

It does seem that if one is a loyal member of MacRumors, they would want to support its team.

I agree with MrMacman.

I have found everyone to be very courteous. I consider myself to be kind to everyone. Not sure who you think it is that mistreated you? From my perspective Rower_CPU and MrMacman are very helpful and positive. I can personally vouch for MrMacman he has been especially patient with me.

A lot of the treatment that a person receives depends on how they interact with others.

Maybe we should all remember that when reading a post, there is no tone of voice. Our brain makes that up. So maybe, when I think someone is biting my head off, it's all IN my head!

edit: Maybe we should all check our damned spelling BEFORE clicking submit! :D

You're right, of course. In addition to checking spelling, is checking the usefulness of a post. If spell checking and grammar checking were used, we might still see posts with no value or even, off-topic posts. :D

Well, since production isn't declining, we have some time to rest and re-think ourselves. <ducks>

you've been kickin' arse, m'mutt...
so much so, i've been watching my butt!

you got me to optimize the procs that i own,
but i've also just turned off the ones from at home.

so here's to the challenge and to the cure,
but it'll take a wee bit more to knock at my door.

to bring it on topic, i'll say it's like this,
i'm folding as fast as i can.

:D

Whilst it isn't going to make all that much difference to our overall production, I've just added an Athlon XP 3200+ to my folders :)

Bring on the MR folding revival!

This is where I was going with my original post. Sorry to stir the waters so. I'll see what can can be done about the issues at hand.

Took a while to get back on topic, but hey, Rome wasn't built in a day!

The SA folks have gathered the numbers and seem to be on a mission...

SPCR has gathered a Vender that likes to burn in the machines prior to shipping, guess they got to make sure they work...

What a convenient way to Fold...

Happy Birthday "Mr Mac Man" and I do hope that a G5 is on order.

Best wishes! Fellow Mac Folders :)

seems like we're at 333 active users now, and i remember a peak of some 444 last month, and there were 296 when i got on board in 12/03.

we seem to be having a retention problem. perhaps we should try to attract some corpo-edu-resource-enabled types...who would sponsor a macrumors/maccentric team?

could we attract an oreilly.com or a smalldog.com or macsales.com? how about the zdnet mac-convert david coursey? :p

to paraphrase george clinton; "who's got the procs? we want the procs. who's got the procs? we want the procs."

I really don't hope so... I am just folding at a constant level of almost 200 points a day! Would like to hold on to that for a while!

BTW, I have passed the 5000 points!!!!

a super - hey now!! - congrats to fritzthewondermutt for the one-day spanking! i'm impressed! (that's 1291 me/1318 you according to extremeoverclocking) but i am really smoking you today :D

i seem to be getting a lot of points per wu...(ave of 42.4 points/WU over 44 WU. yesterday i averaged 28.7 points/WU over 45 WU.

EDIT--that was my vague reference to the topic of tinker storm. it hasn't hit my machines yet. --/EDIT

keep it up, i'll tip my hat your way when you pass me.:p

Hi from the Something Awful Goons (http://www.somethingawful.com)

The reason we last through Tinker storms is because most of the processors are Athlons. Our Macs (including my old G3) do take hits, and I have to keep reminding everyone about -advmethods. I'll make sure to see if your autorun script is better than ours :D

As for that whole scoring thing,
1) we bought some banner ads on our forums recently
2) "SA Forum Goons Currently Logged In: 2699

There are currently 2422 SA Goons (out of a possible 27,970) and 277 wanna-be members on the boards"

If you want to know why TINKER is so slow and GROMACS is fast... TINKER is written in FORTRAN, and there are no good FORTRAN compilers for Macs. GROMACS is in C and uses AltiVec.

haha I love the site... Each category in the rating system is based out of a possible -10 score (-10 being the worst). The overall score is based out of a possible -50 score (-50 being the worst).
Yeah which one is worse? never got that hahaha.

If we could harvest the power of the guest on this forum... we could own... but...
At 1 AM EST... 433 (64 members and 369 guests)

Errrrrr?

We know why the tinkers are slow... just why even use them anymore? no frikken reason IMHO... make everything go slower...

The Teams lose and folding loses... gah.

BTW, tell your team to SLOW DOWN!

Geez.

Hmm, Don't force a public code review. I remember taking a look at the scripts a while ago and I did have some suggestions (I did cringe a couple of times).

Let me know and I will re-review the latest scripts and PM my comments/suggestions.

Thanks Shemp9999! It's not a 2.0 but a dual 1.8 folding 24/7. And the name comes from a Magic (the Gathering) card. Also heard a while back on the Discovery channel of the English fighter class ships called Dreadnought, but no!

Don't panic

Yeah, noticed that... saw you coming from a mile away! Even thought about it to get my B&W up and running, just to keep you off a bit longer! But if I remember correctly you fold with 6 procs, I only have two... But watch out, one day I will get you! LOL ;) You are the first that passed me! But your goals are good, I have the same!

Hey Shemp9999: "INCOMING!"

i got a few PIII procs (4 now) in my farm, but they did just replace a dual 900 PIII with a dual 2 Xeon this week...

and, yeah, you are stabilizing on me. i had been passing you by a few hunnies a day, but now were sitting tight at ~9500 pt diff. i'm looking for you in my threats. if you persist, i may want to turn the home macs back on. and maybe find a few more nighttime machines at the office (i have easy access to about 2 terahertz - and that's just on the linux desktops).

but i might just let you roll on by, too. i'm not gunning for anything in particular, and i feel like i'm giving, so...

I agree, I already passed any milestones I wanted to hit. I won't be rolling by anybody anytime soon though as someone powered off half my machines, (that lab isn't being used right now). :(

An update on my production. My wife just allowed me to install folding on her 15" PowerBook 1.25 and iBook clamshell 500. Neither one is going 24/7, but I hope that it will still help. The installation was flawless because of the patient assistance from MrMacman on my PowerMac. Again thank you.
