Firefox always seemed like a bigger memory hog to me than Safari, but maybe that's because I usually have a few dozen tabs in Firefox open compared to one or two in Safari.

Firefox is at 20% CPU, 370 MB (real), 1.25 GB (virtual).

When you only have 512 MB of RAM to go around, Firefox learns to deal with less.

If that makes it spiffier, which it should, then it is probably worth it.

its better to compare browser with same amount of tabs open (say, 3-5), and stay open for at least 1 hour.

There will be a lot of noise, especially when it first started. also the content of the webpage demands different amount of ram as well.

Also, do remember that safari 4's top site preview function creates separate process and consume extra memory.

That being said, here is what I see when I just open them and with same three tabs

Firefox! Simply the best :D

Don't know if I'm mistaken but Mac OS is written in such a way that the more RAM you have, the more applications are let to leave (archive) files in the RAM, so that if a user requests something he already used, it has a higher probability in still being in the RAM.

its true for all OSes current in the market.

its true for all OSes current in the market.

But what about inactive RAM? I once read that it's used as an archive of old data in RAM.
It's useless comparing how much RAM your browser takes as it depends on your hardware and setup.

yeah, every OS does that.

true, but still interesting topic :D

its not a browser comparison topic, its only a show your... topic. Nobody should take the single number seriously.

Altho, even with all the variability of RAM size on macs (which really isn't very much). You can see, safari does consume more ram's generally.

Mine. 750MB actual. Have about 40 tabs spread over 6 windows from a research session, plus opened / closed about 200 tabs over the week since last reboot. Almost out of memory here, but 4GB gives me plenty to play with.

The only thing that brings my whitebook to its knees is opening both XP and Windows Server 2008 in VMWare Fusion = massive paging to disk. Unfortunately I need to do that for work :(
