IIRC, that was the scene from Office Space where they beat the $#!^ out of the copy machine. I loved that one too.

I agree with you eye. I'm really digging Mr. Anderson's latest 'tar. If I had to pick the top 2 posters with the best 'tars, I'd say you and Mr. Anderson have had some of the best. I really liked Mr. Anderson's previous Einstein one as well.

With the new size, there's a lot more detail that you can get. Eye's is great and I don't think it would have looked as good at 50x50.

I hope we see a lot more creative ones soon. The current one I have is just a place holder :D

I love the show. Anyway, I guess mine is a litle creepy-looking if you don't know what it's from (see my sig). I probably could have tried harder to find a less forbidding expression/pose, though. C'est la vie.

I'm pretty sure animated GIFs are the only acceptable ones, which are of course non-interactive. However, the size limit on 'tars is 19.5k, so good luck fitting much animation in there... keep the color pallette small, you'll get more frames in.

Well, look at it this way:

We like women, right? Whats better than one woman? TWO!!! And so, if we're going to watch porn (that's not so much an "if" so much as a when), we're not going to watch it for the guy in it, so you could do away with him, replace him with another hot chick, and all of a sudden, its twice (if not more) interesting.

I know what he means about animated avatars. A few have been very distracting. I think the rest (like mine) are a minor distraction at worst, and worth it for the friendly entertainment value.

Some web sites have animations all over them. Within reason, it's fine. But sometimes they overdo it and they are slow and hard to read with all the distractions. One site that was otherwise useful had a fast flashing ad at the top. I had to scroll it out of view to read the page. Then I gave up going to the site. Now I'm sure they are sorry they did that to me.

Hardest part about making an avatar is keeping it within the size guidelines. I always want to push it bigger and more colorful...
Agree.
I have static avatars, animatied Flash and interactive avatars etc.
But many forums have different giudelines, so I have to change them.
The coolest is the random Flash avatars/signatures, you can take that so far with small interactive movies and Flash file sizes are VERY good these days.

Is there anyone else here who finds animated avatars to be ridiculously annoying?
It's all a matter of how good they are.
Some play once and stop, making them less annoying and if it's a well designed animated avatar it might work well too.
I guess I just like fun avatars and find "canned" avatars to be a bit boring.
Go to a design forum and see the great avatars there. You can fit a lot of cool graphics in a little 20x20 cube. :)

Totally! then you could add a vomiting sound when he spits it out and a gulping sound when he takes it back in.

although that would be cool... it would also be quite annoying. if it were an .swf i could easily add sound controls or have a mouse event to set it off. as it is, i seem to be bending the 19.5k limit a bit. an .swf can be quite small; this same animation is 16k in Flash – i could probably sneak in some sound effects and make it on demand. i think this would make animations less annoying too. you know... loop on demand.

loop on demand

loop on de-man

AppleMatt's avatar has confused me several times. I've read enough of your posts so that my first reaction when I read one of his posts, mistakenly thinking it's one of yours, is to think "Hey, this wdlove post is out of character." Then I remember it might be AppleMatt and glance over to confirm it. All in a split second. So that shows that seeing your Mac icon (with or without animation), rather than your name, is how I identify your posts when I'm skimming. There are no forum rules about similar avatars. It's just informal agreement among gentlemen and ladies that we try not to confuse each other. You could live with the slight confusion (it's only momentary, at least for me), PM AppleMatt and ask him if he'd be willing to differentiate it a little more, or change yours and let people get used to the new wdlove. You can also change your mind!

P.S. There's somebody else whose avatar uses the Mac face, with animation that cycles among it and other well-known Mac icons. I forget who it is.

i'd have to say i like agreensters 'tar the best. saw it a couple of days ago and had to come back for a third and fourth look at it. :) very smooth animation, love the way he pops his head out. one tip that might help it look even sweeter... if you could make that white border the same as the background colour... that would just make it blend with the background more.

kiwi_the_iwik, funny 'tar you've got there. :D i'll probably never look at a kiwi fruit the same again. :p

and edesignuk, i do like that 'tar as well. i'd have something like that, using all those high-res pics you shared ;) except that i want to keep the same look, pixelleted, game-inspired. i might go for a Metal Slug 'tar with some sort of animation soon though... that game's full of the best animations ever.

whos that guy with the same 'tar as wdlove? applematt? we've got to do something about that. the other day i thought wdlove was giving props to a movie about getting even with your ex via her mom. it's just not right to think that.

Woah slow down, a PM would do, no need to start industrial action/gang war ;)
Yeah we (7 of us) watched that video when we were drunk, thought it was the best thing since sliced bread (but in reality, nothings as good as sliced bread), now it's long-gone into "Secure Empty Trash" heaven. The post was just harmless fun, nothing more.

I have been caught off guard by this one too, i've learned to look for the telltale animation. But usually, post content is distinctive enough ;)

Lol, I'm not that bad am I?! Aside from the *cough*post-about-the-video*cough* and getting a bit narked a couple of weeks ago with everyone arguing over everything, almost all of my posts are on-topic and hopefully helpful or useful.

There are no forum rules about similar avatars. It's just informal agreement among gentlemen and ladies that we try not to confuse each other. I've only just read this thread. I've always (since 1999 iirc) had the "Apple face" on all forums I'm a member of, it's just simpler to keep it the same...but..."AppleMatt's avatar has confused me several times" is enough for me to change it, the only other one I had was a power button but sonofslim's animated version is tonnes better. For the record, I've had the face on here for almost a year (since last mid-summer) I'm surprised it's only just come up. As for the thread topic, I think Rower_CPU's avatar is pretty good. Also Nermal's and aswitcher

edit: Ha! I've just read wdlove's thread about changing his 'tar and he said he's considering a "possibilities...medical" avatar...buggar!.
edit 2: How about this one? I just quickly knocked it up, it's only 8Kb. If anyone has a side-profile of saltwater fish (blue ring angels or firefish would be good) or knows of a good resource that'd be great.

Lol, no. What I meant was that I was thinking of a new avatar and as I study medicine I'd make it medical...but your thread said you were thinking of a medical one. Seems we have the same 'tar-tastes, but you're willing to put effort in and get an animated one whereas I'm happy with a static image. I'll edit my previous post so it's more clear what I meant.

neut, seriously, put one of those blue USB turds (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=67802) as your avatar so I don't adopt a terminal illness. http://www.thetechpub.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif http://www.thetechpub.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/new_shocked.gif http://www.thetechpub.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/new_shocked.gif http://www.thetechpub.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif http://www.thetechpub.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif

I've been out of town for two days, so it was certainly interesting to catch up with this thread today. I even notice that I editing a post by Dippo while I wasn't near a computer - how talented of me!

Here's the avatar I used on April Fool's day:

Maybe that's what AppleMatt should use so his avatar won't be similar to wdlove's. After all, I'm not using it any more! ;)

Damnit, now I have to find another supplement to hold me over...

Errrrr..... a low quality animation of a hand on a stage person... yeah, I guess that'll hold me over for a few hours.

Not so elegant ;) :D
The animation is not very smooth and too fast IMHO... its quite distracting while reading.

Uhh... You're on a Mac site giving thumbs down to the Mac logo and thumbs up to the Windows logo.

As for the guy with the balding head/hair sprouting avatar, it frankly kind of scares me.

Quite elegant.

What about mine?

It looks like you aligned the top of your head in each frame, so as the hair is removed the face bounces up. It would look better (although, frankly, still not good!) if you aligned on your eyes and shoulders and let the hair move down.

since you complimented me on mine this will be hard to say but I think yours is quite scary as well. although I assumed it is one of those look bad on purpose things.

I say make a better one but hey thats up to you.

So now I've carefully read all 8 pages of posts, I've seen a few I really like and will go back to photoshop and ad a few more layers to mine. Since I created it for my product line "Sparky's Marinade®" I have to be a little partial to mine

Whoa, cool! That was unexpected! It's a snap from Pixar's video "Geri's Game" which won an oscar for best animated short a few years back. I still think that Geri is the best human model that Pixar has ever made, all the other ones are really...meh IMO. Here's a link...

Damn I tried to make an animated one from that short but I can't the size down enough.
