In the classic words of Fake Steve; Frigtarded.

If it's going to have a text tell you that you've been IMed, why not just have it forward to your phone by setting up AIM Mobile - type in your number, and IMs get sent to you in texts.

Much much better than a message telling you to go look somewhere for a message.

Haha yah it's ghetto. It might be different if you buy the app. They probably want you to open the app to get ad rev.

If not, lame on both fronts.

You ever seen the actual aim app? It's loaded with ads. The ad isn't too invasive at all.

Have the preferences always been where they are now? It seems really confusing where it is.

Otherwise, I like that you can stay logged in for 24 hours :)

Good point, and very clever on their part if that's the case. Evil, yet clever.

idk why they had to add ads to the app.

So I'm definitely not going to upgrade, is there any way to get the badge off my app store? If not, I'm going to just pull AIM.app and put it in my root because my phone is Jailbroken and then my phone won't know it's installed. The new one offers me nothing usefull. Might as well use Palringo full time :(

Are the ads that noticable? Anyone have a screen grab?

They aren't intrusive at all. They fade in, and fade out shortly after (maybe 5 seconds)

They certainly aren't something to not update because of.

And this is to everyone who is bitching, its FREE. They need to generate revenue to pay for the added traffic on their servers, they can either charge you, or they can put on ads.

I agree with Jeremy, the ads are not intrusive at all, and going through loopholes just to stick it to the man seems like a waste of time.

I don't get it.

I mean I get why AIM would put ads but why make a paid one? There's already Palringo that's free that offers AIM and more services and then there's Beejive.
I don't think most people would but the paid one unless its a dollar.

Jeremy1026
Feb 25, 2009, 05:24 PM
but why make a paid one?

Because AIM is a division of AOL, which is part of AOL/Time Warner, which has stock holders. Stock holders like money, therefore, AIM is getting a paid version.

Most people avoid messaging you if they see "on mobile" though. Simply because its annoying waiting for a reply from someone on a mobile device :p

On mobile is the most useless feature on AIM. The only way I use the AIM app is because at least it can sort the mobile contacts away from the actual availables, unlike palringo and the rest.

But I have another problem, and I'd like to ask if anybody has solutions...
When I set AIM to login for 24 hours, and then I use Adium on my mac, it SMS's me whenever somebody IMs me. Is there any way to disable notifications when I am connected on my mac?

thats the whole point tho, I don't want to log off my phone because then once I shut off my computer I will have to remember to log back on again.

I know jabber has something called priority for clients, but I dont know about aim.

Sorry, I can't really help, I just wanted to emphasize how important this issue is. I had to log in on AIM on my iPhone and change it to log out immediately yesterday, then change it back this morning. It'll get frustrating if I have to do this on a daily basis. First post, by the way.

AOL's AIM [App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=281704574&mt=8)] has been updated to version 2.0.1, bringing several new features, as well as a change to an ad-supported model for the free edition. AOL also promises that an ad-free paid version is currently working its way through Apple's approval process and should be available soon.

Among the new features available in AIM are tools to access contacts directly from within the application, configure multiple screen names and easily switch between them, and share locations with buddies to find nearby friends. In order to work around Apple's limitations on applications running in the background AIM has also developed a system to allow users to stay logged in for up to 24 hours, even when the application is not open. Users can then receive notification of incoming messages via SMS.

Feb 27, 2009, 06:11 AM
No. Guess I'll have to use another client then (as if I used AIM much before anyways :o).

On a related note Live Messenger in Windows is so rubbish. I can't believe they're squeezing adverts in every corner of that thing. And media player has adverts too! WTF. Maybe I've been using a Mac for too long.

AIM for Windows has been ad supported for awhile. Along with taking you to some kind of home page until you can find the option to turn it off (the home page, ads can't be turned off)

Luckily I use iChat, and Apple hasn't used ads in any apps since I switched in 2004. I did see a demo of Sherlock 2 on an old Keynote that had ads, but dunno if they made it into the final version.

I was actually pleasantly surprised that AIM 1.0 for iPhone didn't have ads, though it was full of bugs.

Oh well, time to find an AIM alternative.

Pay? AOL PAY AIM. Why is it I'm thinking that the annoying ads are not only a way to make money, but also to make it so annoying that you feel compelled to buy the app just to get rid of the ads. Well, I guess I wont be using AIM anymore.

Fuchal
Feb 27, 2009, 08:59 AM
I'm sure it's pay / ad supported now because of the 24 hour login that they supply now. Compare this to Beejive which does the same thing - 16.99! It's totally worth it.

Paying for IM just seems wrong, especially on top of your 3G or Wi-Fi access costs. And AOL are not the only game in town, nor are they as monolithically pervasive or compelling as they once were.

Why Apple doesn't build iChat (even text-only, non-AV iChat) into iPhone, I still can't fathom.

iChat is very welcome to find its way onto the last blank slot of preloaded apps on my home screen. :) Fill 'er with something good, boys!

Same here, along with a voice recorder (I know there are 3rd party but that is something that should be built in on every phone) and a video recorder!

I'm pretty sure it's not up to Apple. AT&T probably has a contract with Apple that says Apple is not allowed to provide any service that could directly compete with AT&T's VERY lucrative SMS text messaging business.

However, even if that weren't the case, Apple probably still wouldn't put iChat on the iPhone until push notification is enabled, which they still have not done (again, probably related to disputes with AT&T over how to handle them). The reason is because the average Joe using iChat would expect iChat to handle push notification and Apple sees the lack of push as diluting the "easy to use/just works" brand image they have so carefully built up over the years. So they're not going to put what they feel is an inferior product and what consumers might misconstrue as being a "hard-to-use" or "non-functional" Apple product. However, Apple will allow AIM and others to do IM on the iPhone without push, should they so desire.

I doubt it.

AT&T allows AIM on other phones in their lineup. No reason they would deny this on the iPhone.

There is already a VERY POPULAR APP that allows you to send SMS for free without it eating up your SMS's.

I upgraded yesterday but it wasn't the pay version (said it wasn't out yet). Seemed to work fine, I set it to online for 24 hours and had a friend IM me while I wasn't running the app. Then I ran it and I got the message.

Although I tried setting up the SMS texting so I'd be notified, I entered my phone# and was told I'd get a confirmation text. I freaking got no text.

I absolutely despise the update. I wont be using it anymore. My LG phone works just fine with AIM.

Second thought: Depending what the paid version looks like, I might buy it. That is, if it's under $1.99

I think this is true - I used to have Verizon and had some crummy Korean flip phone and there was an AIM client you could download but it sent your IM's as text messages (they'd come through as IM but be charged as text and that way you didn't have to have a data plan, just a texting plan). It was horrible.

Anyway, I do use iChat on my MBP but only for video purposes and I have less than 10 buddies. Facebook chat has been far more useful and I'll tell you this: if FB ever adds video chat my AIM account is GONE! AIM on the iPhone is a useless waste of time for me and I would never download software written by AOL, based on the history of AOL. Anyone remember AOL about 10 years ago on Windows? You'd load the 30 meg software and end up with about 500 megs less of available storage. Why? Because they'd installed ICQ and Compuserve and Netscape and all sorts of other promo junk that would install in the Windows system tray and slow the computer down. JUNK WARE!

AOL needs to make money somehow. The AOL service itself has been losing money year after year especially since they made the AOL service free a few years ago. They still offer a paid service but why pay when they offer free accounts too. Those who have free AOL accounts, get ads placed on chatrooms and other various places while using the AOL software.

It's just carrying over to AIM now since AIM was always a free service that AOL always provided.

I got fed up and uninstalled it by hitting the black X and then plugged in my phone to my laptop, didn't sync, and used DiskAid to browse my Applications folder... There were no less than 20 copies of Aim Free and one Copy of AIM. For some reason it wasn't deleting the old copies so it always said there was an update. I just deleted all of them with DiskAid because my phone already thought it was uninstalled. Then I synced with my computer and it was fixed. :D
