EDIT: Ever tried cable management?

Lol way WAY too many wires.

I have all the standard wires plus the 4 from the temperature reader and 4 more for controlling fan speeds. I also have 2 from the sound cathodes, 1 for the IDE-SATA converter, and several several others..:)

In that case, good sir, you are excused. :D

Here are some (hopefully) better pictures. I took the PSU out of the hard drive bays and added a small tri-color LED fan to the front of the case.

Oh, and I cleaned up some.

I don't think mine came with any LEDs near the DVD tray.

Now you just need something better than the 8600GTS.

I just rebuilt my PC, selling off almost all my other computer stuff.

Intel Core i7 920 @ 4GHz
Xigmatek 4 Heatpipe Direct Touch CPU Cooler
6GB G.Skill DDR3 1600MHz RAM
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UDP4 Mainboard with Intel X58 Chipset
Sapphire ATI Radeon 4850X2 2GB Quad DVI Output
Corsair TX850W Power Supply
400+400+400+250+250+250 GB 7200RPM Hard Disks
Dual 22X LG DVD-RW with Lightscribe
Antec Nine Hundred Case
Sony GDM-FW900 24" CRT + IBM 19" CRT
Logitech G11 Keyboard + Razer Deathadder Mouse + Razer Barracuda 5.1 Headphones

I'll get pics once the video card gets back from getting RMAed. I dont know what happened, but it just shorted everything out. ~_~

The computer was playing Crysis and Crysis Warhead at 55+FPS at 1920x1200, Very High.

The card is so long its ass end is sitting in the drive bay. :D

Just throwing everything together. I once killed a hard drive when I was modding my xbox. My desk is a folding table and I had it sitting on the metal braces to the legs because I was tired of taking it in/out of the case. :p
I guess that's not too bad since it's the only thing I've ever killed.

Ah, yes :D. It's actually just out because I was testing out all the parts to make sure they worked ok before I stuck them in the "rack".

After seeing this (http://helmer.sfe.se/) I just had to make my own to run BOINC - but on a very limited budget, adding PC's as I got them. Here's what it looked like before the Phenom, I'll update the photo as I add the third 'pooter in there:

Yeah, that guys rig is pretty damn sexy. ;)
I thought about using some of the old machines I have laying around and messing around with a cluster, but I don't know what I could use it for.

I actually started building a wooden rack in woods in highschool. I was just going to put all the old/misc rigs I had laying around in it so they were all contained and easily managed. I got the shell finished and realized that whenever I needed to put a new one in I would have to build a custom case since I wasn't making a standard rack. That, and I didn't really know where I'd put it.

I may make one someday. I'll certainly have to plan it better. Having it all self contained with switch/router and a kvm would be pretty slick.

Very High, with 4x AA on.

I am currently using an 8800GTS, and I can do High with no AA at 25-30FPS, same resolution. The 4850X2 had to get RMAed.

CPU: AMD 5200 X2 2.7 GHz
MSI 8600GTS (Happy with this as I get DVI out and I don't need it for gaming)
2GB Ram
250 GB Sata HD

Had it running Vista for a couple days, but changed it 10.5.6 and it runs sooo much better.

Is it normal for my computer to keep on overheating when the CPU fan is running, while the computer sits in BIOS?

It stays on for close to 10 minutes, with the temperature increasing from 37ish to 105. Then it overheats and shuts off.
I don't know if the temp is in C or F.

Its the stock Intel cooler, and I think that its not secure so the heatsink isn't touching the processor. Well, I KNOW its not secured properly, but I think that the heatsink isn't touching the processor.

If it's going from 37 to 105 then I would say it's in C since 37 is avg temps for Celcius. I would definitely check that out if it's overheating like that. Very bad for components.

depending on the outside temp then i would say that's normal for start up.
My PC idles at around 70 to degrees celcius. According to speedfan those temps are burning hot, but my pc is very stable at those temps.

Once again if your pc is shutting itself off then that's a bad thing. Check out the heatsink and upgrade your fan if possible.

Need some help from all of you people (Again!), When I start my computer up, it says "Intel E4500 @ 1.3Ghz" ....my CPU is a 2.2 Ghz CPU. I didn't mess with anything in BIOS or anything.

When i start the Computer, Windows Vista startup thing says E4500 @ 2.2Ghz
Yet, I think its only recognizing 1.3Ghz seeing as how before it used to only take Close to 20% of my CPU for doing nothing, nowadays it idles at 90%.

Got a question:

What is the point of having 2 graphic cards other than dual-monitoring?
I mean, you can't use them both at the same time (Other than dual-monitoring) right? Does it like take the RAM amount from the second one and make the first one better or something?

It's a technology known as Crossfire (ati) and SLI (Nvidia). It allows two or more gpu's to split the workload in order to boost performance.
It used to be considered better to get a single faster card than two slower ones. I'm sure there's been enough advancements in multiprocessing and optimization that you would have to consider what cards are in your price range and look at the hard numbers to see what's better nowadays.

I do not understand why you can get a quad core PC with 4 GB RAM and 1 TB HD for $500 when you can get a dual core mac mini with 120 GB HD and 1 GB RAM for $600. Does not make any since. Yes the mini is smaller and quieter but the mini os overpriced.

When installing a new processor you don;t need to format. Same with installing a new motherboard.
IF your mother board has a different chipset than your last one, then you should remove the old drivers and reinstall.. Though personally I just format in this case.

Have you considered overclocking? Or is the old processor fried because the heatsink broke?

No, I didn't think about OC'ing.

The processor is perfect, it just as some (iron?) on it from the heatsink, but I can take that off.

After I installed the new heatsink/fan, I restarted my computer, and the clock speed was like 1.6Ghz! I went into the BIOS, and changed (something) to 11x instead of 2x. That made it back into 2.2Ghz, and that was the fastest option I could do. So, I'm guessing its not overclockable?

Here is a G4 to MicroATX case conversion I did recently. Eventually I will write a detailed guide but have not felt the initiative yet.

-Pentium Dual Core 2.5Ghz @ 3.0Ghz
-4GB DDR2 800
-2 x 640GB Hard Drives
-ATI Radeon HD3850 512MB
-DVD Dual Layer
-Zip 100MB
-400w 80Plus Certified PSU

Don't worry the case came from a dead Gigabit Ethernet G4. I would not cannabilize one that still works.

Eventually this will also run Mac OS X. Unfortunately the 3850 I bought is not compatible. I have tried many modified kexts. From what I have found some 3850's work while others do not. I am waiting until I am willing to buy a 4870. But Windows works great and this is primarily a gaming rig.:D

As long as I don't owe anybody anything, and everything I buy I earned, I see no problem with very expensive equipment.

It isn't crack either.

Yeah, but would you REALLY notice the difference between a i7 or a Quad-Core?
Also with the graphics card- Would you really notice the difference between a 1GB Graphics card, or a 512mb one? Not with everyday computing.

Doesn't matter to me, I buy the best I can afford.

I also like to buy used, which cuts down on costs.

I will be able to score some decent PPD for folding at home once my i7 rig is assembled. And now, there really isn't a real world tangible difference but this is a luxury item, it isn't rationalized or justified. I don't NEED my cooling system, I put it together because it's fun and I love the way it looks. Same for i7, it will be fun to try something new and break new ground, I've never OCed anything outside the Core family.

Thanks guys.

No idea how much it has set me back, just pretty consistently upgraded over the past few years. Most I've overclocked is just under 3.2, but that ran too hot for my liking.

The 4870 is a good card, but it runs far too hot and loud (As is the ATi way) :(

Edit: Very similar spec machine would cost around $2750AUD.

Well, I've just spent almost the entire night working on my rig and have nothing to show for it... the problem was, I couldn't get OS X to work on my 150GB Raptor, so I tried to install it to the RAID ports, the DVD drive ports, etc etc with all sorts of different BIOS settings.

Bleargh.

Also, my dad complained my room was getting too hot, so I downclocked her from 3.6GHz to 2.4GHz.

I just hope I don't drool on my components too much and short anything out! Big problem is had, I am trying to source chipset blocks and as far as I can tell: there are NONE for the Bloodrage, and the stock doesn't have tapped fitting holes, it just has attached barbs, blegh.

28?. Wow, if I just leave my computer not in sleep mode, most it goes to is about 39. When all I'm doing is iTunes and Firefox, it goes to about 42-43.
I'm running my Core2Duo stock. Its a E4500 at 2.2Ghz (Not overclocked). My case is a Xion Solaris.

(All those temps are my processor ones I think, they're the highest that SpeedFan detects)

EDIT: SpeedFan right now says 48 for Temp1, -2 for Temp2, 58 for Temp3, 63 for Temp4, 65 for Temp5.

Those are all in Celcius. Right now, I'm downloading like 10 things off Torrents, iTunes, and Firefox. 10Minutes ago, I was doing all that and watching Transporter with WMP. (Yes iTunes was open, it just was paused)

Q-tip can introduce material into the paste and generally the best method for applying paste is to place a single droplet just a bit smaller than a pea then place the heatsink on firmly and straight down. Once it's down just hold it steady for a few seconds then start clipping it in. This helps make sure there is no air/etc in the paste. Netted me an OCed Q6600 running at ~35C on a Scythe Infinity, which is a far cry from an OCZ Vendetta.

Grr, I want my parts! But for anyone interested, once they get here I am going to be putting up a build log on XS.

I went on Craigslist, to see how much my computer (or equivalent to) was selling for. I saw some 2.1Ghz Core2Duo, 150GB IDE hard drive, 2GB RAM, and 1x DVD burner, in a standard case go for about 500.

After that- Me trying to convince my parents to let me sell my 2.2Ghz, 160GB(SATA), 256mb Graphics card, 2x DVD Burner at 22x, 4GB RAM for close to 550$, and then build a Quad-Core. This is what I got so far-
Also, the prices are only on Newegg, This is just for parts, I know I can find better deals than these at MicroCenter or Frys or various other places.

The Q8 series are technically fine, it's just that I don't like them because they have way too little cache. 4MB is not enough for a quad. They don't overclock very well either.

If you're not going to be doing very many multithreaded things on the computer, I would go for this instead:

Also, Nice computer there chewietobbacca!!

The primary difference is size (fewer expansion slots usually, fewer sata slots, etc.) and chipset (some chipsets are meant for ATX only, though it can change around). That and mATX is usually geared towards being more budget oriented

Honestly though, 90% of users could use mATX and wouldn't see a bit of difference though

Oh and thanks!

Ordered some Red Fans and Cathodes, and need to sort out the Mesh Window. Got the E7400 Clocked to 4Ghz, Temps never above 50C on the CPU, 70C on the GPU, and thats without any intake fans.

Cost Total £680.

To Do List
- Spray the Inside of the Case
- Tidy the Cables
- Add a Mesh Window
- Overclock the GTX275
- Watercool (Dual Rad in the Front....? Enough to cool a GPU and CPU?)

Watercool (Dual Rad in the Front....? Enough to cool a GPU and CPU?)

Nice build

Personally I wouldn't watercool if you're already hitting 4GHz with the E7200 - just slap on an aftermarket cooler to the GTX275 if u want lower temps on that. Unless you're into the watercooling hobby, then a dual rad is enough for a E7200 and GTX275

But anyways, I don't think I ever posted my computer in here (Weird seeing as how iMpathetic and I are probably the two users who post here most). So here-

Xion Solaris case
Gigabyte G-31-MX-S2 motherboard
Intel E4500- 2.2Ghz
Xion 450Watt power supply
2 DVD burners at 22x each
160GB (as well as a Slave 1TB) Western Digital 7200RPM SATA
Diamond HD 2600XT SB edition
22" Acer Monitor

It needs to have 512mb RAM.

A 4670 512MB after rebate is close to $50, but look from there on down. The 4670 is actually a pretty decent performer too for its price, and will probably drop a bit more in price now that the 4770 is out

hhmm seems like a bit of a cheap buy! yu should overclock it to 2.8ghz/3ghz then sell it for $500 :):)

i had mine at 3ghz on stock air, i bought a cheap $20 ebay cooler and the temps idle really low. you should think about even doing in minimally. might get more monies :)

I'll try overclocking once these files are done transferring onto my NAS.

I think I actually downclocked it? (Whenever I try to do anything, it acts all slow, and my CPU usage jumps to 70-80%)
Can y'all help me out on how to overclock this thing? I went into the tweaker thing on my Motherboard BIOS, and it is displayed with the following numbers:

really??? hmm.. i have the same model of CPU as you just a higher stock clock and mine can go to 12. that must be why. leave it at 11 & leave the frequency at 200mhz, that will give you your stock clock.

if you change the frequency to 250mhz that will take your CPU to 2.75GHz :)

I restarted my computer after making it 225x11 and it's slower than ever!
I made sure it was 225x11, and the startup screen (Before Windows) says its at 2.47 or something along that.

It took me 5 minutes for Windows to load up (Vista), and now my CPU monitor (Widget that came with Vista), says my CPU is at a constantly over 75%.

Now its under 20%...weird. But still, its not as crisp as it used to be.

My RAM is DDR2, "High Performance", 4GB from OCZ. (Or OWC don't remember, always get them confused)

Now, that I look back on the CPU Usage, it does seem to be doing better.

Its staying at 1-5% with Firefox minimized, and less than 10% with Firefox open (And McAfee, SpeedFan)

Edit: After the CPU Usage went down to less than 10%, my temps are now at 48- They were tipping between 49 and 50 before.

Remember, you can't cool temperatures below ambient, and each degree of ambient temperature makes it that much harder to cool so it can translate to even mor heat from a CPU

Hey again folks, technically not a shot of my system per-say, but I hit a nice overclock this morning, thought I might share :)

We have here what appears to be my new 24/7 OC, or perhaps benching OC, I might bump it down to 3.6 simply because I don't need 4Ghz:). Either way I am running a stability test to see how it fares, at the very least I will log it away for when I am in need of some epeen power.:p

And the current state of hardware affairs:

Someone mentioned about underclocking CPU in OSX to reduce temperature. Turning off a core does the same thing.

Guys!

I've been offline for the past five hours because I CAN'T GET THE DAMN DRIVERS TO WORK FOR MY 3870X2 ON VISTA!!!! RRGGGHHHH!!!!

Anyone know how? I boot up and the video is all garbled, it says it installed the software, restarts, and then I'm in an ENDLESS ******** BOOT LOOP.

LOL. My graphics card and power supply cost more than that.

If you want to make it a pissing contest, my videocard or my case or my ram or my cooling system or my hdds all EACH cost more than that(and my mobo comes close, so does my CPU). At least he is getting a machine, that's what is important.

@iMpathetic: What version of catalyst are you using? Have you tried tossing another videocard in there to see if it does the same. Also, are you doing a clean install(new install of Windows) or just layering it on top? If you are just layering: make sure you removed the old drivers or you are borked.

Well, I freshly installed Vista Ultimate, then tried the drivers, and no display after the little screen where it says "Microsoft Corporation" and the little swoosh thing. Just a blank backlit screen.

Then I stuck an 8600GTS in the primary slot and re-downloaded and installed the drivers with the X2 in the secondary, wiping first, of course. To no avail. Windows said it was installing drivers, not Catalyst, which was b*tching about the display driver not matching, even though everything was from the same damn 8.1 package.

That's where I am now. I could D/L the 9.4 package or just throw the X2 in the trash and use the 8600GTS, but then I'd have to fight with OS X to get it working.

Before installing catalyst you have video though right?

If you're still having trouble, I can help you live over irc:

Good news! Thanks to the advice I got from N1451 and everyone else, it is now working, but I had to stay up to 2 AM to get it working. Tried safe mode, increasing voltages, switching cables on the PSU, different slots, blah blah blah, 2 reinstalls, and it finally worked.

So messy, but I might finally be able to get my case out to the powder coaters monday(still waiting on my dad to bring me a drill and pick up his new computer).
Who manufacture those motherboards?

I am thinking of building a i7 webserver but would that board and Dominator GT 7-8-7-20 be stable as a webserver?
Is there a board with the same colorscheme but with 6 memory slots?

Mine is stable but your mileage my vary. The only board I know of with this same colour scheme and 6 dimms is the EVGA Classified:

Thats one good looking board, but what is it that makes it so much more expensive then the Asus P6T6 Deluxe, that motherboard looks pretty good to but would probably look weird with the red top on the Dominator GT

The Classified basically represents the absolute best in enthusiast boards available on the market as we speak, it has a full 3 x16 slots and one for x8, for a physx gpu or somesuch. Top of the line hardware comes with a top of the line price:)

I liked it a lot. It was fun to make and it lights up my room. I got the case from a friend because I parted his computer and sold the parts for him on eBay. It ran great for a cheap computer. I just hooked it up to my 32" Panasonic LCD through HDMI, looked great!

I'd been thinking about building a double-wide acrylic full tower to house two computers and sticking a KVM in it.

Nice cable management BTW ;)

I love Lian Li cases. I have a PC-A71 rebranded Rocketfish and it is the best case ever. Cable management sucks but that's what Dremels are for. ;)

Need a fan in the side and maybe a window.
