Depending on price, I could be in for one. I'd speculate 599-699? Of course if it's 699. It might be better to just get a D90 body for 150 more. Already have the new 35mm 1.8 that I have used on my Dad's D80.

Definite D60 replacement, I cant imagine why some people call this as D90 replacement, it doesn't even have the top LCD...

Definitely still an entry-level camera. No dedicated INFO screen - this is a major no-no for me. I look at them all the time. That's too bad, cause there has been countless times I wish my camera has an articulated display. Damnit, my D70s feels really old now. :p

Notice that as soon as the PRO line goes triple digits (D700), the Entry-level goes four digits. Always one digit more, just like when we have D3 vs D90.

Hmm, I don't think D90 is considered as a pro camera, its just 1 tier higher then D60.

I think its possible in the future, Nikon labeling will be:
Dx - top end
Dxx - pro
Dxxx - prosumer
Dxxxx - consumer

And yea, it seems it does not have internal auto-focus motor.

No, that's what I'm saying, it used to be:
Dx - Pro
Dxx - high - Prosumer
Dxx - low - Consumer

Now it seems like they're going:
Dx - Pro
Dxxx - Prosumer
Dxxxx - Consumer

They can't possibly be considering the D90 to be higher than the D300/700, which is what your convention is suggesting. It's too late and awkward to bring the Dxx back to the higher end, people's perception are already cemented to recognize D300 and D700 as PRO. I know the D40/50/60/90 are still there, but I think the D5000 will mark the beginning of a new generation of cameras and naming schemes. Basically almost identical to the Canon way of things.

Either way, I hope the only reason a D400 is not released in conjunction is simply to Not overshadow the launch of this very interesting camera. I want my D400.

That's how Canon works, you're backwards on the Dxx and Dxxx, the D300 and D700 are above the D90.

You lost me on your D series; maybe you meant:

My thoughts on the announcement:

But have to say that Nikon makes it hard to choose at times.

Wrestled hard between the D200 and D80. Bought the D200 for some features that I thought I would use; but did not. In the end the size and weight of the D80 would have better suited me.

Right now I am trying to pair down on the gear I own. Love my Nikon kit (a D50 converted to IR, and the D200 - with a decent selection of lenses); and my Leica kit (the M8 and M6TTL, also with a decent selection of lenses). Getting rid of other stuff that "made sense" at one time - but not now.

The thing I love about the D90 and and now the D5000 is being able to just rely on SD memory cards; regardless of what I take on my shoots and travels.

As a street shooter; I can't wait till our rep comes by with the D5000 and see if what I have missed the from the swivel screen on the D5000 makes up for Canon abandoning it in the G series....

Not a replacement to the D90 really... some specs are better - some are worse.... still weighing in on what things are important to me as one that was wanting to get the D90.....

The top mounted info screen is a plus, as does the quality of the LCD screen, as well as setting the the AF/AE button to work as FV lock (something I liked on my Canons) ; but the buffer seems to be larger on the D5000, does to have some other whistles that would have been nice in the D90.

The biggest thing missing in the D5000 is the missing focusing screw - for those of us that have lenses that still require it or want to open the possibility of using lenses without the motor built in. Means selling my great Tokina 12-24 and maybe buying the newer version.

Though the inclusion of the L firmware may drive more of us towards Nikkor lenses in the end...

So this still doesn't have an internal auto-focus motor? ...

This camera is aimed at the D40/D60 crowd - no matter how much we might want it to be a "poor man's D90" in the end.

This body clearly slots between the D60 and the D90. My guess would be that Nikon kills off the D40 (and the 6mpx sensor, finally), and drops the price on the D60 to make it the new entry level DSLR. It adds some nice features - the CAM1000 system from the D90 and exposure bracketing. It still clearly has a consumer feel to it.

FWIW, it looks like Nikon has a new WA zoom coming too: link

Nikon killed the D40 already. I think it's clear that they're shifting the D60 down and having this take what used to be the D60's slot.

Silly pricing on the D5000, combined with a shockingly low resolution articulated screen. Oh, and the pivot is on the bottom, which is an appalling place for it as it will interfere with tripods. Side mount would have been much better.

I must not have gotten the memo. Do you have a link for that assertion?

Yeah, it was widely reported that they discontinued it not too long ago. Search around rather than have someone do it for you.

D5000 looks interesting. Still glad I have my D90 though, the one thing I might like would be the articulating screen...but I'd rather have the in-body focus motor. What's really strange to me is how much substantially larger the D5000 is than the D40/D60. I know a big selling point for some people who bought the D40/D60 was how compact it was for a DSLR.

I don't want to provoke an argument, but if it were widely reported then I would have been aware of it and would not have reacted as I did. None of the sources I rely on have passed on any specific announcements about the D40. If you're privy to some, then post a link.

Fine, I'll cave...I know using Google is hard :p Here's a few...

Also, the D40 microsite is gone. Nikon only does that when they discontinue a camera.

Yeah that has been known for awhile now if you keep up with that stuff. Thanks for the funny sarcasm. I needed a laugh.

Only that first link is of much value, but thanks for posting those. The nikonrumors site also reported on a couple of rumors. It is no surprise that the D40 is being discontinued, I was just unaware that there were any official signs of it.
