View Full Version : best sites for motion graphics content?

cb911
Apr 21, 2004, 08:06 AM
well i'm just gettin into motion graphics now... and i'm always looking for good sites for inspiration and ideas... and of course good examples and showreels. :D

so does anyone know a motion graphics site that links to the latest examples? for example, 3dtotal.com features links to heaps of 3d, and other types of animation and related material. that's an awesome site, i must have downloaded about 2GB of animations and showreels because of following links from there.

are there any sites like that where they link to other sites that have motion graphics content? i know a few good sites out there, and i might as well list them here. at least if no 'motion graphics directory' exists out there, this thread could serve as a listing of the best motion graphics! :D

KD LAB (http://www.kdlab.net/) - this kinda crosses over into animation, but it's cool and you can download a showreel there.

LOBO (http://www.lobo.cx/) - i only discoverd these guys in the last week, they've got some awesome work. well worth a look :D heaps of stuff to download as well, very nice work.

La Huella FX (http://www.lahuellafx.com/) - well this is kinda more post-production oriented, but it's a good site, perhaps good for some inspiration?

Exopolis (http://www.exopolis.com/site/) - these guys just rock. their work is top notch, i could watch their showreel all day long. :D well, maybe only for half a day. excellent work to be seen here!

www.mk12.com/]MK (http://- [url) 12[/URL] - again, some great work over here. i could watch this for the other half of the day. :D a must see.

REZN8 (http://www.rezn8.com/) - lost of commercial work you might recognize. they've got reels to view as well.

GMunk (http://www.gmunk.com) - well, this is a pretty crazy site. :D he's got some very good work, and some funny clips on there as well. lots and lots of content to go through. another must see.

so there's just a few sites to start out the 'best motion graphics directory'... now lets see how many other good sites we can find out there. :D anyone who knows some good sites, please post your links here. it's time to share. :)

there must be at least a good few hundred MB to download there... so here's a excellent tip for Safari: to download something, say a QuickTime movie if you don't have Pro, press 'cmd+opt+a' to open the Activity window in Safari. find the QT movie that you want to download, and 'opt+click' on the movie URL, and watch as it pops up in the Downloads window and starts screamin' down your pipe!! :D i just found that out recently, and it's definitely something everyone should know about. :)

oh, and i don't know if Community is the right place for this? is there somewhere else it should be to get more attention?

uhh, what is motion graphics? what good do they do?

'Motion Graphics' are exactly as they sound.. graphics that move.

It can be something as simple as the rolling text credits at the end of a film, or a well developed and executed starting sequence to a film like 'Se7en' that enhances the story by offering some insight into the actual story, can be Flash animations on a website or a tag that animates on a television ad... or just the result of old fashioned creative experimentation. ;)

thanks iGav.

there is this new apple app called "motion". this sounds ignorant but, can't fcp do any motion graphics?

To a degree Final Cut can, but it's pretty basic stuff 'Transistions' and the like... Final Cut Pro is a non-linear editing package, you use it to 'cut' footage together.

For higher end motion graphics and comp work, you'd want to look at applications/hardware solutions like Adobe After Effects, Discreet Combustion, Discreet Flint, Discreet Flame, Apple Shake and now Apple Motion, which looks to be targetting Adobe's After Effects and Discreet Combustion in the desktop motion graphics software arena.

If you're wanting to produce motion graphics for the interweb (think animated intro's on web pages) or CD-ROM/ DVD-ROM, then you'd use applications like Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Director, iShell and before it was axed but still useful Adobe LiveMotion. These applications also allow you to add 'interactivity' to your work.

thanks for keeping this thread alive iGAV, almost all of the URLs listed are in a "ThinkTank" bookmark folder in my bookmarks bar. here are my biased partisan reviews that i hope to add to this thread for those who need a quick motion effect fix:

http://www.floorless.com/
this site is a nightmare, but the showreel squeezed in so much video+graphics work that it'll keep ideas flowing.

http://www.jjwalker.com/
a plain and simple site. the vector work and the intro animation are jaw dropping, with rag doll physics to grab attention; the afro-clad character is awe-inspiring. it finally got me out of my rut and gave me a great idea for my reel.

have you guys seen the Mills latest work? the Mercedes Cloud Gods commercial? very nice work, and there's also an interview with one of the creators flowting around on CG Channel or somewhere like that.

The Mill (http://www.mill.co.uk/) - 'Cloud Gods' is featured on teh main page.

also some more excellent commercial work from Framestore CFC. i know we all know about them, but it's a massive site, so i thought i'd just post some choice commercials. :)

Audi - 'Illusions' (http://www.framestore-cfc.com/commercials/audi_illusions/index.html) - a very trippy commercial. think of Eschers' illusions applied to video. :D

XBox - 'Mosquito' (http://www.framestore-cfc.com/commercials/xbox_mosquito/index.html) - this isn't new, but it's a classic. i just love it. :D

XBox - 'Champagne' (http://www.framestore-cfc.com/commercials/xbox_champagne/index.html) - another classic. i have been looking for this commercial for ages, i was stoked to finally find it here.

thanks again to iGav and others, there's heaps of stuff for me to go through now, should keep me well and truly inspired for the next semester. :D of course i'll keep posting more as i come accross it as well.

I don't really know of any specific 3D links as I don't really work in that area.

Same goes for architectural animation links, however there's a new online exhibition at MoMA.org called Tall Buildings, whether that's of any interest to you or not I don't know, but it's interesting all the same. :)

yeah, some very cool partical effects with that text there...

i've never used Livetype, so i can't speak about that, but i'm sure there's no simple way to do that in Shake, unless it was with a plug-in that i don't know about.

it could also have been done in After Effects, with a plug-in, or without, albeit with much greater difficulty.

or it might even have been done in a 3D app?...

i have no idea really, but it was probably very complicated. :p

a couple of new ads.

from davidandgoliath, Los Angeles - Kia
http://www.syflex.biz/gallery_method.html
QuickTime of the ad provided on that page.

and new from The Mill, Hutchinson "3" - Jellyfish
http://www.mill.co.uk/engage_search_articles.php?id=1569
i just love this one. :D

if you want to save that Jellyfish clip, just right-click once it's loaded, and 'save as QuickTime movie' and it'll show the file name as 'playclip.php' or similar. just save it as 'jellyfish.mov', and there you go. ;) just for those who didn't know that...

edit>> also check The Mill front page for more updates.

i was just watching a bit of Res DVD magazine (http://www.res.com/index.res.html) (which is really great BTW) and i came accross these short films featured on there:

Watermelon Love (http://www.channel4.com/culture/microsites/M/mesh/watermelonlove/content.html) - this short is available from the site (i think)

MTV Asia - Monkey King (http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/commercials/1221/)

http://www.sherbet.co.uk/html/index.html - this site was mentioned on the DVD, some reels there to check out.

also there was a really outstanding short by Francois Vogel, the mind behind the "HP Picture Frame" ads. the short was called "Readymade". i havnen't found this on the 'net, but a search for Francois Vogel (http://www.google.com.au/search?q=francois+vogel&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official) yeilds some interesting results. ;) one of those being:
Method studios (http://www.methodstudios.com).

well i think that was all the 'motion-graphiky' type stuff on there. :P

I notice a lot of these production houses, especially the great ones, use discreet flame or smoke...if we don't have that kind of system, let's say aftereffects, finalcut pro, on a powerbook what kind of inspiration can I look at and say, let me try that on my system.

I think you need to clarify what you mean by traditional animation. Do you mean cell animation (old-school) or modern Pixar computer based animation? Motion graphics is a big field ... hell, cartoons are really just motion graphics. ;)

... And arn't you supposed to do your own research? I remember there used to be this thing called the library ... maybe that's just yesterday's news (http://base.google.com/).

lol, by traditional animation i mean cell by cell hand-made animation. For example, one of the differences i think there are is that cartoon "traditional animation" works cell by cell, while the new animation, like flash animation, usually uses keyframes, and the rest of the cells are provided by the computer automatically. Another difference is that new animation is developed for different reasons than traditional animation. For example: its used for websites, and TV; while the "old animation" is used mostly for cartoons and movies.
I hope you understand what i mean, I havent practised my english in a while :P

You should probably start a new thread to cover this ...

Though you are mostly right with your answer ... it may be a bit dated. Modern movies use motion graphics style animation more-so than cell based animation. cell has become more of a style or look than a standard. idependant and animae films seem to still prefer cell, but that is rapidly changing with computer graphics become accessable. Even complex computer motion graphics rely hand drawn frames for the ultimate control. Cell animation is really just doing it by hand with physical tools. The same frame by frame animation style can be done on the computer.

Good luck on your paper. :)
