lol free VPC. what a waste of a program.
sorry but that background is quite ugly :(
yea and wow the rest of those backgrounds are intense too!!!
W7 is looking rather good though, i have the beta thing and its pretty darn reliable! i hope the full version is worth it :)

ah, $34 is only upgrade version, full version still costs 60+.
on a second thought. I m not sure I will still be on this netbook when win 7 arrived... we shall see. Im a bit disappointed in intel's 2nd gen atom, which doesn't seem worth anything at all, that might keep me on my current Netbook longer.

no, actually it does do the trick for most stuff, I edit (cut and split, etc) avi (using avidemux), wmv(using movica), watching tv online (Hulu, CBS, etc), working with office 2007 and other stuff, such as skype video chat, illustrator and gimp. google earth. and some games, MM6, MM7, MM8, HoMM3, HoMM4.
There is no limit of what you can do with it, albeit it will be very slow if you were to run matlab, mathimatica, etc.

FCP obviously belongs to the category that 99.9% users dont use :p
its same gpu as first gen MB, Intel GMA 950.

I think the choice to bundle the Windows XP and VPC copies into a free "Windows XP mode" in the business versions of Windows 7 is quite interesting. I'll be really curious to see how the media takes to that one. Particularly the decision to deprive (most) home users of this feature.
Windows 7 is looking very nice generally, but the game-maker will entirely be whether MS can convince people to start writing "killer apps" that need Win7.
My experience with my Atom EeeBox (N270) is that it's slow in loading applications, particularly first loading the basics like Firefox, Thunderbird, and iTunes at launch, most likely because of the slow HD. After that, it's a bit on the slow side but generally usable. It plays full screen "HD" flash video -- like Lost in HD -- reasonably well, so it does the kinds of things I ask of it admirably.
The second-gen atom does seem disappointing -- hopefully the dual core, low power Atom will be worthy -- otherwise, things like that e4200 Dell notebook that has a low voltage Core 2 processor but weighs around 2.3 lbs sounds more appetizing than another netbook, even if it's more expensive (or, gasp, perhaps even a refurb MBA rev A) to me.

It pains me to say it. Now, don't get me wrong. I won't buy a PC, I'll never use W7 unless it's for work or something.
But some of the wallpapers that come with the W7 RC1 are really f'n cool. I like them because of how different most of them are.
Here's a link to a Flickr collection, where you can download full sizes:

Attached is my iMac's new desktop.

From what I've been reading w7 is going to be a very interested OS. The features they're including seem useful.

If that's full sized...
It still stretches to fit my resolution, so it doesn't look good at all.

The 1920 x 1200 downloads should look good at that resolution. Which size are you downloading?

You might be better off downloading the original size. The download defaults to the Large size.

I just opened it to as big as it can go, and then right click>Set as desktop Background.
Is there an actual download link that I can't seem to find?
EDIT: Just figured it out, sorry.

Yes, the last one you posted made me think of that movie and Gulliver's Travels pretty instantly. They're nice. Odd and quirky to have come from MS, but nice. :)
My guess is that they're an inside joke / prank from one of the team members.

ahh righto then. yes FCP is rather a niche market :p

the beta/pre-release version that i tried looked much more resourceful then vista - even under parallels it was fast and responsive! it still uses quite a bit of RAM though and the visual features of it are a bit in-your-face IMO, im not that fond of those.. (roll back to xp themes :))
Looks like a kids background to me?
yup pretty much, i sure hope they arent trying to target kids for this OS  that would just be rediculous

My impression of having used the Atom is that it honestly would do the job of a lot of home computers and particularly a large swath of the corporate desktop (particularly the many people who use MS Office, a web browser, and hardly anything else) quite well, just as it is (without even waiting for an improved dual core version).
Systems like the Eee Box have other advantages for this kind of use -- they're tiny, one needn't pay for things like optical drives that many corporate users don't use, etc. And they consume a tiny amount of power compared to the desktops that are typically on those desks.
I'm curious to see how Win7 and the Atom line get along -- I haven't tried it.

very good point. being quite a heavy novice user (i.e. multitasking a LOT) and never having used the Atom chips (except in the shops-where i found them to be pathetically slow) i dont think that the Atom is for me - but for, as you said, a large majority of business users it would be perfect! the costs compared to buying the larger PC boxes would be very tiny (1/2 to 1/4 of the cost). most businesses would already have the monitors, keyboards etc so all they would have to do is pay ~$300 for the basic stuff and wala!

those things would cut down on costs yet again, making them all the more realistic for those sorts of markets :)

wsj has an article on it today, and i haven't see anything negative about it. http://www.betanews.com/article/Microsoft-All-netbooks-will-run-any-Windows-7/1240258328
im a bit worried about my games, which don't run in vista, probably wont support win 7 as well.
... well, i will wait and see.

judging from my small experience - vista program support is basically that of windows 7..

Yeah it's interesting, and from what I can tell it's integrated like Classic used to be in OS X. That still seemed to work pretty well to move people across to X :)
