Hey guys,
The LCD on my uni macbook 2.4 has this manufacturer and model:
Manufacturer: 00000610
Model: 00009CA5
I've searched around to no avail. Anyone else have this screen, and know what the vendor/model is?

Yea the panel in my new Unibody 2.4GHz Macbook also shows this model number etc. Doesn't seem to match the known "list" of panels. Maybe its a new brand/panel Apple is using for recently built unibody MB's?

A lot of people say the macbook air's screen is "much much better" than the macbooks. I owned a macbook air for a while before exchanging it for my macbook, which has this newer screen, and I don't notice a quality difference at all. Beautifully bright, vivid and balanced.
One complaint I read was that the macbook's screen had a horrible black. I've watched a few movies on the macbook (one being "let the right one in", which has some very dark scenes), and the blacks are very black, no different from the macbook air's, which i also watched a few films on.
Here are a couple of (horrible) photos of my screen i just shot with my iphone. Sorry if they are of such horrible quality that they aren't worth your time. :(

fuz10n, do you mind taking the time to take some photos of your MB with movies playing on it & also with a black wallpaper (such as that Apple Earth wallpaper) or something? Thanks in advance. :)
Based on your photos, I guess this new screens Apple are using in the MB are a whole lot better because when I compared your screen to the screen on my Alu MB, yours is simply better than mine. I guess I should have waited for one more month before buying it with these new screens (I bought my base Alu MB at the end of March). :(

fuz10n and Sareth, thanks to both of you guys for taking the time & effort to post those photos/video for us. I really appreciate it. :)
Man, I have to say that these new screens look to be way better than the old ones. The black levels look really black. The black color also seems to be perfectly event across the screen, which seem to highlight the fact that these newer screens have got very good viewing angles. :)
I really regret buying my Alu MB (with a s**ky 9C89 screen) at the end of March. :( Why can't I wait for just one more month? :( Oh well, that's how life goes sometimes. :( By the way, anyone interested in buying a 5-6 weeks old base Alu MB with AppleCare for cheap?

So is this post saying that the most current UMB come with a better screen than earlier UMB? Will you definitely get this screen if you buy it new?
I was thinking about the refurbished route but if there is a difference between March's and April's screens then I would go new.
Or, does anyone know what month refurbished are shipping? Like are refurbished UMB shipping now built in like January or even February?
Please help! Thanks!

I'm afraid that it seems like it is true that the latest Alu MBs are coming with these "MBP quality" screens. :( You should have a fairly high chance of getting these screens if you buy your Alu MB new as of now. Good luck. :)

I doubt Apple will do anything for me because they'll most likely tell me that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my screen & that it is within their stringent specifications. :D
I'll probably take your suggestion to ebay it or something. The worst thing with news of Apple using these new higher quality ("rev. B") screens is that my Alu MB's resale value is definitely going to take a huge bump. :( I guess there is a reason why people always advise not to buy a rev. A product. :( Oh well, I just hope I don't loose too much money selling my Alu MB. :( Wish me luck. :)

Thanks Speed... two more quick questions:
1. Does this come on both the 2.0 and the 2.4 because it seems everyone who posted has a 2.4
2. Is there a way to tell which screen you are getting on the outside of the box? Like is the serial number printed on the outside or will the Apple store try to make you happy and figure it out before you purchase.
Thanks again.

1) I think it should. There is no reason it shouldn't because the 2.0 & 2.4 are using the same kinds of screens.
2) Unfortunately, the only way to tell what screen you have is to open up the box, turn on the MB & check for the screen model using the system preferences menu.

Wow. That doesn't even look grey at all & the black is even from top to bottom. :)
I just wish mine is like that. :( When displaying that same wallpaper, I just cannot get the black to be even throughout the screen no matter how I tilt it. When the top is black, the bottom is grey. :( When the bottom is black, the top is black but "inverted," if you know what I mean. :(
I guess my best option is to sell my base Alu MB (which I'll do after my exams about 2 weeks from now) & re-purchase another one (hopefully I'll luck out & get the same 9CA5 screen this time). :) Hopefully, I'm able to sell it to someone who doesn't know about the new screens so that I'll not loose too much resale value. :D Wish me luck. :)

Does your camera have any "visual stabilizer" function or something? If possible, I (as well as others) would appreciate it if it is convenient for you to take some photos & share with us. To the people who have these "newer" screens:
1. Any chance we can get some pics from some angles horizontally and vertically?
2. Even better, any chance you might know someone who's had an aluminum Macbook for awhile and could take some straight-on and angle pics in comparison? Comparison pics with MBPs or Airs would be interesting as well.
For sake of comparison, I've got:
Manufacturer: 00000610
Model: 00009C8C
Looks great straight-on, but I'd say a 30 degree angle horizontally or vertically is pushing it in terms of viewability. The main gripe is that ANY change of angle changes the viewing quality, so if I'm even slightly off-center it won't look as good as it does head-on. It's certainly tolerable, but still far inferior compared to a MBP.

Also, you can find out what panel you have by opening the terminal program in OSX and pasting the following command:
ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
This method spits out the manufacturer code of the panel - different from Apple's mmod codes. You can then google the code to find out who makes it and view the vendor's spec. page. The credit for this info goes to MacRumors member JayLenochiniMac. It was posted here in a thread on 20" iMac panel quality. Here's the link for anyone interested:

For me & the other MB owners, we're all SOL. The only way for us to get that is to loose "some" money by selling what we have & re-purchase it again. This is what pisses me off & it probably sums up why people have been saying "never to buy a rev. A product!" :(

dloreski, I mainly use the 2.4GHz now so don't really know if I notice a difference in day-to-day. I do always read how people complain about the Macbook's screen quality (I had the Pro and Air before) and never thought it was THAT bad when I used the 2.0GHz UMB with the 9C89 screen.
However when I got the 2.4GHz with the 9CA5 screen I did notice how it looked different than the 9C89. I kinda like it better.
I'm not an expert at all with colors and profiles etc. but I just like looking at the 2.4GHz with the 9CA5 better but perhaps others will thing that the 9C89 has "better color" (guess not "all is lost" for those with the 9C89 screen? :D ). Just my $0.02.

By the way, if any existing Alu MB owners (with "crappy" screens) are going to complain to Apple to see if they can get their screens replaced, please kindly post in this thread. I'm interested to read about your outcome.

The JCDisplay screen calibration is best, but the screen is not as bright as the original profile.
i am thinking of calling up apple one of these days...sucks that the new units, not even a new revision already has better screens.

I agree. :) By the way, I'm guessing that the 9CA7 is gonna be a Samsung.
For now, the confirmed manufacturers of the new screens are the following:
9CA5 - LG-Philips
9CA8 - AUO

I too have a 9CA7 display in my 2.0GHz aluminium unibody Macbook. I purchased it at the end of April this year (2009).
I ran 'ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6' in Terminal, and it comes up with the following:
N133I6-L08
A search on google comes up with a company I've never heard of before: Chi Mei Optoelectronics (a subsidiary of the Chi Mei Corporation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chi_Mei)). According to Wikipedia, it's the world's 4th and Taiwan's 2nd largest maker of TFT-LCD panels.

I just purchased a new MacBook from the online Apple store and received the following:
Manufacturer: 00000610

I haven't seen this panel mentioned in this post? Is this a newer panel, or one of the old ones?

Second that. Running 9CA8 AUO and it's sitting on about 30% brightness, that's plenty enough.
To be honest my display doesn't seem to be returning those "can't distinguish the difference between border and black desktop" results that the previous screen caps of the 9CA5's were, it's just a shade greyish.

It looks like they finally switched to tn+film screens on their consumer line. If its true its then its a really good thing. Most PC manufacturers had made this switch like 5-6 years ago and there is very little price difference between TN and TN+Film.

My display on my unibody 2.0 is far worse than any of these pictures, including the pictures of the 'old' display.
It's 9C89, does anyone else have this?
When looking at a black image, only about an inch horizontally in the centre is close to black, above and below that it fades to grey even with brightness turned all the way down.

Having gone through 4 of the newer MBAs with issues like this http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=703534 , I'd add a pound in weight anyday if the screen viewing angles are as good as the original MBA. :o
That would make this uMB 9CA5 the best value notebook on the market if the screens are as good as they seem to be.

Going top-left to bottom-right, the solo shots are the 9CA5 first, then the 9C89
Hope these shots help as a basic comparison.

If they're still 6-bit panels, does it really matter?
Apple needs to suck it up and provide good displays in all models. If we're paying a price premium, we ought to get better than "cheap 6-bit TN crap."

Yea I posted those comparison shots and its funny how my pic is used in some guys blog, never had that happen before lol.
Yea sorry for the poor picture quality I have some crappy Canon A520 from a few years ago. I've been real busy lately so haven't checked this thread but I'll try to take some more comparison shots between my newer uMB 2.4 with the 9CA5 screen and my older uMB 2.0 with the 9C89 screen.
I'm no expert at screen quality so I can't say which one has "better looking colors" but some posters after viewing my pics say the 9C89 is better for colors (the 9C89 is on the right in all the pics). I do know that the 9CA5 has much deeper blacks though so when I watch movies with many dark scenes it looks great versus the washed out "Grey color" on the 9C89. When the screen is black I can't really tell where the screen borders with the black border on the LCD screen so I guess that's good. My uMB 2.4 came with a tiny nick on one of the corners of the LCD lid and the back hinges aren't even (one side has a bigger gap than the other) but I'm quite happy with the 9CA5 screen so I figured I'd just keep this unit despite its 2 minor cosmetic issues for fear of playing the "LCD panel lottery" and swapping it out for another unit with potentially a different model screen).

So, with all of these new panels being discovered.... I'm sure all of us MBA owners are dying to know:
Any lines?
If they're FINALLY using panels without those frickin lines already.. I'll take my v2 MBA in for a screen replacement. Been waiting patiently for them to get their act together.
Also curious about hot spots, shadows/inconsistent backlighting, etc...

Isn't it funny that everyone write about better panels but no one actually can prove it? The problem was terrible viewing angle, not colors. The only difference I see in the photo above is difference color calibration, that's it. Can somebody please go to the AppleStore and make some photos from different angles?

Having just returned my 17" MBP because it was just too big for casual use, I see a new uMB in my near future. Having used its gorgeous screen it really makes a mockery of my late 06 MacBook. Far too dark, uneven lighting and lastly far too yellow.
Now will they update the line at / or soon after WWDC?

actually yeah. When I went to best buy (the first vendor I wanted to buy my macbook from), they still had the 9C89 on display, and I thought it looked OKAY. But then Apple came back with the back to school sale, and I decided to buy from my local apple store. I checked the display's screen model, and it was 9CA5, and it was SOOO much better than the 9C89. I was actually lucky enough to get that one when I bought mine.
