View Full Version : What Macs have you always wanted?

May 21, 2009, 10:50 AM
No Macs they still sell because just about everybody on here wants that:D
I have always wanted a:
20 inch iMac G4 - Best design by Apple ever.
Titanium PowerBook G4. Why? I just have always liked those. I even had one for about a month with broken hinges. I still used it (as my main Mac) with the broken hinges.
Black MacBook - any model Why: it would be great for web browsing on the go because it is so small and a MBA is underpowered (rev A) and has a non replaceable battery and a hinge issue. Also the MBA would be more of a thief target.
2.33 GHz MacBook Pro Why: It is the fastest non unibody MacBook Pro with a reliable graphics card.
Apple I, IIs and Lisa's count too!

Gonna have to go with the 20" iMac G4. It would also be pretty cool to have a 12" PowerBook G4. As for current Macs, I want a 15" Unibody MBP.

For me there is a long list... anyway, here goes:
20" iMac G4 - Coolest. Computer. Ever.
24" White Intel iMac - Complements my MacBook and I prefer White
PowerMac G5 - first mac I really wanted..
iBook G3 - First Mac was one of these, need one back
128K - The one that started it all!
17" and 12" PowerBook G4s (Launch Versions)
QuickSilver G4
iMac G3 Bondi
iMac G3 Graphite
Quadra 610
PowerMac 9600
PowerMac G3
*EDIT - Forgot - G4 Cube 500)

12" 1.33Ghz G4 iBook (I want to make it a "netbook" :o)
I'm amazed at the number of people who want Quad G5s. I wanted one myself until I had to service them. Never seen so many hardware failures on one model before. It's a shame, too, because those things are still pretty bitchin' machines beyond the whole reliability thing.

4 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
4x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB
2 18x SuperDrives
2 Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel)
Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse
Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) and User's Guide
AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card with 802.11n
Mac OS X server
Quad-channel 4Gb Fibre Channel PCI Express card (I might decide to run my own server)
I'm accepting donations LOL Just Kidding
I want one but my wife would kill me..... Last year before I was a MAC guy I built a crazy PC that is very similar in specs but I wish I never would have because I would have got this computer. I still to this day am kicking myself in the a$$ for not buying a Mac Pro instead. Oh well we live and we learn but mark my words I will get one someday.
Macs destroy PCs in my book. I wish someone would have said something to me a long time ago to check out Macs.
I almost bought my Macbook Pro with the 2.93 processor but it was the first Mac I've ever owned. Now I kinda regret it. I had a really old Apple desktop my brother gave me in 94 but it was REALLY old. Other than that I've never touched a Apple/Mac until 6-8 months ago and I'm so glad I did.

Macs I liked the most:
* Powerbook 190c - great system (some might disagree), Fantastic screen, PCMCIA, clickable trackpad. The case fell apart though, so it had to go.
* Pismo 500 Mhz (have a 400 with a 500 chip at the moment. Great system)
* AlBook 12" - fantastically portable system for the time. (Had two, my 867 got stolen, got a 1.5 Ghz as a replacement from insurance, but I had already bought a 17" 1.5 Ghz very cheaply instead and stuck with that)
* Unibody MacBook - looks great and works nicely (current main system)
* C2D 2.33 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro (just sold a 2.16, but I always wanted the 2.33 for the extra VRAM).
Macs I want the most:
* TAM of course!
Macs I was disappointed with that I have owned that people might be envious of. Really, don't be!:
* Powerbook Duo 2300 prototype (Sooo slow, even compared to a 1400)
* Powerbook 1400 (Didn't seem too reliable, had the 133,166 and a 117 prototype at one point, the 166 was good, but they all died apart from the 117)
* Pippin (useless - couldn't get any games for it)

Just bought a couple of my wants in the last few weeks:
A PowerBook G4 12, a Clamshell iBook Tangerine and a Flower iMac :)
Would be nice to get a last edition Clamshell though.
I am quite lucky to have most of my wants, including a TAM (upgraded to a G3 500 and a spare TAM for parts) and an G4 Cube also upgraded to 1.8 G4.

I agree, howevever on the point of those 'tricked out mac pro's',asan owner of one, i'd have to say that its by far not my favourite mac i own.
For me its a tool, its value for me is placed on how much work i can get done on it. My clamshell ibook or 12" powerbook by contrast are no longer particularly useful, (although i still use both of them!), but they also have something else which stops me from even getting rid of them!

Clamshell iBook, I'd take it in pretty much any colour.

I've always wanted the early macs that I either hated or got me into the whole 'scene'. So that would be a G3 iMac, G4 iMac, 12" iBook, maybe an eMac.
But I'd never pay through the nose for something that isn't that productive anymore.

Using your criteria excluding presently available products, I've owned at one time or another almost all of the Macs that I've wanted to own.
A noticeable exception was a G4 iMac, which I'm still tempted to pick up just because it looks cool.
Never owned an SE either, but had two Mac Plus(s).
The Original Mac was tempting but it was under spec in storage and ram.

20" iMac G4 - Perfect as a movie viewer!
PowerBook G4 Titanium - They look stunning
Apple IIc+ - The coolest of the Apple IIs
iBook Clamshell 466MHz Graphite - The classiest of all the iBooks
I'll own them all someday.. when I have more money to blow on stuff I won't really use(except the iMac, I'd use that). The Cube is top of my list though. Best design to come out of Cupertino. I have a banner of it hanging on my bedroom door:D

After that:

An XServe with the discontinued Apple RAID array. They matched and looked good, as well as performed quite well.

I have pretty much all the vintage macs i've ever wanted except for a white iMac G5 or Intel. If I didn't have the G4 I'd probably have one of those. Having two iMacs set up is a bit much (1 br apartment). But my favorite of all my Macs is my Powerbook 12". I do all my real work on my MBP but I enjoy using the 12" more. Great size, quick for it's age, and reminds me of the era of Macs that really got me to turn my back on PC's forever.

I wouldn't mind a Mac Pro and all the other latest Apple gear...but I don't have any real *need* for 'em. I'll focus on older machines instead.
Off the top of my head...
- Fully loaded and upgraded Macintosh IIfx.
- Quadra 700 and 840AV would also be nice, as they are so expandable.
- A Macintosh SE/30 with 128MB RAM, some form of expansion card in the PDS slot, and internal CF storage.
- A fully loaded G4 Cube would be VERY nice, but they will always fetch high prices on eBay. :(
Many people list the TAM, but in reality the hardware itself isn't very special, and the machine isn't much of a great performer. Shame Apple couldn't get a balance of good performance and good design back then.
I would list a few PowerBooks, as some were very nice to look at, but again the hardware didn't perform well (mostly), the displays were usually awful, and the reliability was questionable. The 5300 comes to mind - what an oddball that was!

I'm getting the one I always wanted! The 12" Powerbook!
It's a launch version (867mhz) I'm gonna clean it up and make it a nice little coffee table computer.
I really like my Black macbook though, it's been very dependable, and it's quick enough to run the photo apps I need. (Planning on a 500GB 7200rpm drive in the very near future)
I also have the 2.33Ghz Macbook Pro (15") I gave it to my dad as his first mac, but he's been using it as a desktop, I think I might take it back and have him buy an iMac ;)

Technically, even the very first iMac is not "vintage", as it would have to be at least fifteen-years-old to qualify as that.
Anywho, is it common that my very first iMac (266MHz from 1999), which officially came in a box identified as "Blueberry" and classified as revision B, is encased in a "Bondi" shell with matching Bondi keyboard and mouse? I hated that awful color-- not quite green, and not quite blue.
As for the much beloved iMac G4, wasn't there a problem with the display in many of the 20" models being crooked?

I know the early 15" models had neck issues, but I believe the issue was resolved in later revisions. My 17" has no issues, physically. The only flaw is it won't go to sleep on its own. And a Mac doesn't have to be 15 years old to be vintage. I bought a 500mhz iBook in 2007 and I called Apple because the backlight went out and the first thing they said was, "Oh! You have one of our vintage machines!!"

I still have my 15" G4, and except for the LCD display, which I suppose due to the technology of the time, looks washed-out unless viewing straight on, never had any issues hardware issues. They really were great.
Of course nowadays, if you were to bring in your G5 iMac to the Apple store, they would be calling it not just vintage, but probably ancient, as when I brought in my G5, the Genius said, "Well, it is over 3 years old..."

lol that's like an eternity in Apple years. But since the intels have come out they havn't really changed all THAT much. My 2.16ghz MacBook Pro isn't really outdated yet. So as long as you've crossed over you should be good for a while as far as OS compatibility.

Has to be G4 Cube.
Loved it when displayed with the SoundSticks II speakers in John Lewis. Couldn't afford it. At the same time bought my first Mac myself a Blue Dalmatian iMac. When I could afford the cube it wasn't avaliable so bought the Soundsticks II. Still think of it when I see them there.
Aaaah.

I would love to own a Cube or a Pismo, they are computers I have wanted ever since I first saw them. However I have serious doubts that either of them would be able to hold up to modern useage. i use my computers and dont have room for one that looks awesome, but cant handle xvids or run a modern OS like Leopard.
Pity.

I'm on my Cube right now. So long as its not your only computer, its still plenty usable. Tiger runs great and there are plenty of inexpensive upgrades that are fun to do. If nothing else, its a fun iTunes jukebox and DVD player.

I don't have anything unique to add to the list, and it seems like there are definitely a few models that are in demand by many- myself being no exception :D
My desired, in order:
PowerBook 1.5Ghz G4 12"
any B&W PowerMac G3
G4 Cube
PowerMac G5
And just for the heck of it, 'cause work is super slow today, here's what I've owned:
Performa 6200... I believe it was a 160Mhz 603? I was very young at the time.
Performa 6400, 180Mhz 604e
PowerMac G3 266Mhz (I loved that thing... flashed a PC Voodoo3 2000 for Unreal Tournament. Sweet.)
iMac DV G3 400Mhz (GPU blew... again, young and foolish)
PowerMac G4 DP 867Mhz MDD (Just got rid of that one, gave it to my sister... nice machine)
and my latest, a late 2007 Alu iMac 2.66 Core Duo with a ATI 2600 that I'm happily overclocking.
I also owned a few Apple IIe, which I bought for $1 each from a school. I honestly don't know where the heck those went... probably in my parents barn.

I vote Cube also, and almost bought one on eBay not too long ago. But, I realized I wouldn't get much use out of it since my G4 Mini w/ Leopard does the iTunes server thing. I don't know what I would use the Cube for, other than just to say I have one (and I think I'm beyond that point in my life now).
Right now, I want either a Mac Pro or at least an iMac. The last Apple desktop I had was the Macintosh Classic. And at the time my dad got it, CD-ROM was becoming a hit so DOS/Windows was what I was interested in. Since then I've only had laptops or that Mini, which isn't used except to stream from an external. I'm looking at the 24" iMac for our next computer.

Am I imagining it, or was there a film called Blank Cheque where this boy used a Mac to buy loads of stuff in the '90s? I wanted that mac when I was little.
Then - the original iMac, but I then tried one and it had OS9, I thought that it was like an old Atari so that was a no go.
But the ones I really wanted once OSX arrived were:
iMac G4
12" PowerBook
PowerMac G5 with the Liquid cooling
and the current gen that I really want are:
Mac Pro 8 core
MacBook Pro 15"

As far as Mac's that I would put on display:
Apple I
128K Mac
Lisa
Apple //gs (my very first computer)
Macintosh SE/30
Macintosh Classic
PowerBook Duo Dock (my first notebook -- never did have the actual dock though :) )
20th Anniversary Macintosh
As far as computers I might have has toys:
Power Macintosh G3
Xserve
Power Macintosh G5
And then what I actually want now:
13 inch 2.53Ghz MacBook Pro (to use as every day notebook)
8-Core MacPro (for Desktop)
Reality:
I will likely get 2.26Ghz 13inch MBP in the next year or so (unless they change the base model which is likely). As for a MacPro, I will likely get a Quad-Core base model at some point in time. Likely will get a couple of nice Dell or Samsung monitors for it.

:apple::D you know the imac g4 can go on the internet if it has Mac OS X :apple::D

I have a small list:
When I was younger (around 11 in '03), I wanted a PowerBook 3400c, but ended up with a 1400cs. I eventually got 2 3400's over time, but don't have them anymore.
Later I really wanted a PowerBook G3. I got a Wallstreet in '04 for $225:eek:. I would own 6 more G3's of various generations over the next set of years.
With my first PB G3, I also wanted a iMac G3, as my first 'modern Mac.' I finally got one on late '04 for $96 shipped, which I though was a great deal. It was a 233 Rev. A. I owned 2 more and sold them. I really want a lime now.
I eventually really wanted an iMac G4. I finally got one (my 15" 800MHz) in '07 for $300. It was my first G4, replacing the Graphite G3. I still have the G4, in addition to the new 20" G4 i recently picked up. I got it for $75 because the RAM (and maybe HD) was bad, which I fixed.
I now also would really like a PowerBook G4. I owned a 12" but traded it about 2 years ago.
I'd also love a lime or indigo Clamshell iBook.

Apple IIe with dual disk drives and Applesoft BASIC on an expansion card. That was the first computer I ever used (high school).
Apple IIc-- it's like a IIe in a smaller, more attractive box.
Macintosh SE/30. I used these extensively in college, and even programmed a simple HyperCard game or two.
iMac G4 "Luxo Lamp" 20". Stunningly gorgeous; it caught my eye in a CompUSA store and made me want to reenter the Mac world.

Until the hinge gives. All powerbooks and macbook pros (old design) 17" are plagued with the weak hinge spot. It's a rare case but it can happen. Around the bottom right/left a hair crack comes. At first it's just a crack but it gets so bad then when you manage to close it the display cables can be seen and pieces of plastic come off. i paid 850 euro to get my 17" fixed. a few months later looking through some forums and people got theirs fixed for free!

Hmm, they deleted my post for some reason.
I can relate to that, My grandmother's late 2006 iMac (the one I have right now) started having the lines problem and Apple said that they wouldn't fix it for free. So this past Christmas, I gave her my new Mac Mini and she gave me her old iMac. The day I got her old iMac, I call up Apple support and they then said that they would fix it for free.
Still, I love the pre-unibody designs of PowerBooks and MacBook Pros. To be honest, I'd chose a 17" PowerBook G4 over a new 21" iMac anyday. They still have a lot of potential if you upgrade them.
My 12" still works fine, though it's off a lot since I haven't used my computers a lot lately, I have an iMac G3 running Tiger set up beside my bed for email and web browsing when I wake up in the morning and since the bed is so comfy, I rarely use my desk setup lately as I have been distracted by other things.
Anyways the macs I still need to collect are:
17" PowerBook G4
PowerBook G3
PowerMac G4 Cube
PowerMac G4 MDD
and you can add to the list a 8-Core Mac Pro w/ 3x30" Apple Cinema Displays. I hate the new 24" LED design, the metal design is so much better IMO.

If you really want to get a pre-unibody mac. Get the 17" Pro. I have the last model revision before unibody thing in october (picture someone really pissed). It's still good. Flash and html5 run slow on a powerbook so i don't think its the best way to go foward especially with youtube offering 1080p content.

I believe all the good models have the death card. Don't be plagued with the Ati radeon 1600. Our very own Veronica Belmont had trouble playing bloody World of Warcraft on her 15" 2.16GHz model. So get the fastest if you want to go the x1600 route. And don't forget we have windows driver issues with those models.

As this is in the "Collectors" sub-forum, I'll keep it to older "collectible" systems, rather than new (or even fairly new) systems that would still be good for 'day to day' use.
First was the original Macintosh. But now I have one of those. (That was manufactured in 1983, according to the serial number!)
The others that I really want are a Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh and a first-gen Intel iMac. (Which borders on still usable, but it's the only 'first' system in an architecture I'm missing, as I have the original Macintosh, Portable, PowerBook 100, Power Macintosh 7100/66, PowerBook 5300c, and MacBook Pro Core Duo.)
I have both an Apple IIc and IIc+, but it would be nice to have a IIe (preferably the last Enhanced IIe with extended keyboard.) I already have a IIgs as well. More accessories for it would be nice, such as a SCSI card.
Of course, a Lisa, Apple III, and Apple I would be icing on the cake, but those are always expensive (the original dual-Twiggy Lisa and Apple I well into the "insanely expensive" category.)

I used to have a serious Mac collecting problem, so I've had pretty much every 68k model at one point or another. The exceptions being a Powerbook 550c and any of the prototypes.
One PPC that I've never owned is a 9500. I love the styling of that case (even though it's miserable internally), and sometimes think about picking a 9500 up just for the heck of it. But that's how habits like Mac collecting start, so I've been good about staying off eBay. ;)

Once I get my i7 27" iMac (Graduation gift, going into highschool :D) I'm still going to keep my computers that I have right now, mainly my iMac, PowerBook, and PowerMac.
I can't wait to get a computer that can handle Gmod, I really miss playing it on my Mac Mini but since I gave it to my grandmother I can't play it anymore since the Intel GMA950 built in to my iMac is total crap. It can't even play The Sims 3. I mean really, 64Mbs of SHARED system memory, who thought that one up?
I'l probably retire my current iMac to be hooked up to my 37" with my capture card that way I can finally have a PVR. I tried using my PowerMac G4 after I slapped in a USB 2.0 card and an Elgato EyeTV Hybrid. But it couldn't view anything that well, and I could forget about recording things.
My PowerBook will always have a place in my heart since it was the first computer that I bought with my own money.
After all that is done, I'm going to nab a Dell Miniv10 Netbook and make it dualboot into Windows (for accessing the school's network, the highschool I am going into is pc only except for a few iMac G3s and one eMac) and Mac OS X so that I can do actual creative things.
On a side note, My school just upgraded all their computers, they got rid of all the eMacs, the last of the iMac G3s :( and shifted all the iMacs that were once in the computer lab (the same iMac models as mine) into the classrooms and upgraded the lab to shiny new 2008 era 20" iMacs that dual boot into Windows (not sure about the version of Windows yet, But I'm positive that they boot into Leopard now and they are ditching tiger finally.) But they decide to do this now right as I am about to graduate. :(
EDIT: The sad thing that I just noticed is that I typed this whole post on my powerbook that is 1.5 feet away from me but I typed it via screen sharing on my iMac. Is this the ultimate sign of laziness or what ? :)

wow never seen this mac before... what are the specs?
That is the Macintosh Portable (http://www.lowendmac.com/pb/macintosh-portable.html). Released in 1989 (two years before the first PowerBook,) it has a 16 MHz 68000 processor, can take up to 9 MB of RAM, and came with a custom 20 MB SCSI hard drive. (It's basically a slightly improved Macintosh SE in a barely-portable case.) It uses a large lead-acid battery that would run for up to 10 hours.
The one pictured happens to be one of Apple's common "clear prototypes". Apple would often mold the case plastics in clear plastic, so the engineers could see inside a completed unit to make sure everything fit the way it was supposed to. The clear prototypes are the rarest-of-the-rare for a given model. (Although some models seemed to have gotten a lot more clear models made than others. There seem to have been lots of clear SE's made, but not many clear Portables.)
Love the Sage one - saw one at a recycler's but it was trashed... :(
Yeah, the Sage was always my favorite color iMac, too. I really need to get one. (I have an original 233 MHz Bondi, plus a last-generation 600 MHz Graphite.)

This looks like the clear case powerbook they used in the movie "Hackers" (search it on youtube, you can find it posted there)
I really miss my iMac G4 17", the screen quality was amazing but it was such a shame that it was underpowered with that 1Ghz G4 processor, I sold that and bought my PowerBook G4 :).
I'm still hunting for:
A G4 Cube
A Pismo
17" PowerBook G4/MacBook Pro (non uni) - best Macs ever designed IMO.

I've always wanted a 20" G5 iMac, but with all the reliability issues i just can't pull the trigger and buy one. Its a shame really, because it would kinda complete my collection of iMacs:(

In 25 years of these things all I want are disk image backups of all the 140 / 400 / 800 / 1.4 disks and hard drives I've owned along with a steady stream of emulators to run these things on.

Always wanted an iMac G4 (that works, probably my favorite computer design ever).
I also want another iMac G3 (we threw ours away after the crt went bust)
I also remember seeing an apple ///+ sitting on a filing cabinet in my 8th grade computer class, I should have asked the teacher for it since they just threw it away on the last day of school :O
The current line of (aluminum & white) iMacs are just unappealing and unimaginative, I'm not even sure that I'd take one for free.

It was definitely wicked fast - especially when running System 6. I had one with 20 megs of RAM. Since 6.0.8 could only use 8 megs of it, I'd use the rest for a RAM disk. Booting to the RAM disk took only seconds, and to this day my old IIfx remained one of the most responsive Macs I've ever used.

I want a IIfx too, I've been scouring eBay trying to find a good one with no problems. These Macs are super fast and they are one of the best 68k Macs out there, hands down.

Well, I wasn't really all that into legacy machine, but now I find my self the owner of 2-3, depending on how you count:
Power Book 170, mint condition. Boots FAST. Even today fast.
iMac G3- Bondi Blue, gonna do something cool with it; right now it's under my desk chillaxin' as an ottoman.
PowerMac G4 MDD FW800 - Main desktop, the red headed step child I'm currently wrestling into line. 23" Cinema display, too!

Can't believe that I finally got one, and only £50! Specs are 17" (I think that they look the most 'balanced')/1Ghz/768MB/80GB. Is still in great condition, although i don't have the original box, but those go for up to 4 times as much cash on ebay:eek:!
It is currently running 10.2, which i'll have to upgrade to panther (my favourite OS generation)

I still use a mac mini as my main mac, so a 20 inch imac would be nice. I would also like a G4 cube, Quicksilver, plus either a black macbook or a late 2007 macbook pro. Oh and an imac G3 running tiger would be awesome.

20th Anniversary Macintosh. I'd love to have one of those :D
or of course, an iMac G4
http://themonkeycrew.typepad.com/photos/randomness/imacg4.jpg
Out of many a Mac I loved the 20th Anniversary MacIntosh or TAM was THE pinnacle of art; a true Tour de Force for Apple and the ENTIRE computer industry when it debuted.
* First LCD screen used in a Desktop; or all-in-one almost a full DECADE before themselves, let alone the competition.
* First to come shipped with a SUB-WOOFER and decent mid/high speakers; REAL speakers.
* First to use software keyboard keys and detachable mouse-pad (which evolved in my mind to the Magic Mouse)
* THINNEST Desktop computer for almost 15years; actually its probably STILL thinner than even the TiBook G4 or the current MBP or iMac's!!!!:apple:
Lastly, owners at the time in the USA had this delivered via Limo and an Apple Credit card I thin for purchase approval along with authenticity letter. If I ever see one of these I'm buying so long as it boots or the shell is in immactual condition. They're numbered as a limited edition run and even the commercial is comparable as the best Apple has ever made - including 1984 debut of Macintosh.
Funny how the G4 iMac Lamp didn't get such a good reception at the unveiling UNTIL jobs rotated the screen!!! Then the crowd went nuts.
Right now its the iPhone 4 and the MacBook Pro's. I think I'll just get the iPhone 4 as a work-piece collectable. Unless RIM's 9800 Slider has even 1/3 the touch screen performance which it DOES look to hold its own; and if Apple gets into REAL corporate offices above 5'000 employees besides service providers and used for REAL corporate apps like Citrix, Sharepoint, Lotus Symphony then we may ACTUALLY see Apple get within 2% of RIM's USA marketshare and if those applications are challenged with OS X counterparts then we'll see a HUGE growth of acceptance of corporations purchasing Mac's.
Coders DON'T just focus on the iPhone apps but also on the desktop corporate alternatives.

I paid $200 for mine last year and the unit only - no speakers, kb, or mouse... :(

Growing up I really wanted the IIfx when it came out. Of course, when the Quadras came out the Quadra 900 was the thing. I ended up being able to work on a Quadra 700 during college and that was really cool. Those two I wanted a lot more than the others I wanted along the way like the IIsi, LC, and the first powerbook.

The 700 is my favorite 68K Mac. Sure there are more powerful '040s, but I always thought the Quadra 700 had the perfect combination of speed and design. I love that case.
