Here is a question for you. Is there a way for me to help my father-in-law with problems on his mac...remotely. What is remote desktop and can it be used for me to help him do things (usually showing him how to do things or fixing things) on his mac through the net as I live 1400 miles away from him?
Thanks,
Johnny

Are all of these people on broadband? I can't imagine ARD or Timbuktu on dialup. And if they are on dialup, how do you get their IP if it changes every time they call in?

Good tip.
I just looked at it on netopia.com, and it looks like you assign a computer a name so that you can find it even without a static IP. $189.95 to start it with two computers, though.

Here is another VNC option. First, the computer you want to remotely manage needs to be running this (free):
http://www.redstonesoftware.com/vnc.html
It's fairly simple, just open it up, set a password, and push 'start server'.
Then, you need to install one of the following on your computer (also free):
Chicken of the VNC
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
or
VNCThing
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11993
I personally think Chicken of the VNC is a little faster. All you have to do is open one of these up, and it asks for the IP address of the remote computer, password, and that's all! Works great for me, and it's free
