View Full Version : Congratulations Team Mac OS X - #1 Mac Folding Team

Let's all take a moment to acknowledge the great effort on the part of Team Mac OS X to regain their position as the #1 Mac F@H team. We took the crown from them back in June of 2003 and they've steadily come back since then. They passed us at about 4:30PM PDT today and there may be some back and forth as results come in, but their output far exceeds ours right now.
Good job Noah and crew! :)
That said, get to working recruiting and see if we can't take the title right back. ;)

Good job.
Anyone know how many computers running at 2.6 ghz we would need to get an extra 30,000 points a day?

Depends on the processor. A conservative estimate would give you about 60 points per day for each processor (physical or virtual) depending on the units handed out. Roughly 500 computers. Start calling all your friends and enemas! ;)

i wish i could have been helping with some more points, but for the past few days i have been stuck with some huge tinkers (?) on both my procs. hopefully after those finish up, i will be adding points again for a while on a daily basis.

I just noticed the change to #19, it confused me at first. Was looking in #18 without seeing the name, then couldn't find my name. That is when I noticed the name change. I very confident that we will regain the title once again.
By the way where is the banner, I think that would help recruiting if we were putting it out.

Some of our big folders from the past moved to new jobs and had to leave labs behind, from what I understand. As for mc68k and I, we're stuck waiting for hardware updates on a less than optimistic CSU budget. :(
Sounds like you'll keep us going for a while with your new possibilities. ;)

Congrats to Team Mac OS X. I've just begun folding (for macrumors of course), and just finished my first WU today, with a second nearly done (now installed on a G4 iMac and G3 iMac fulltime, and on my G4 PB whenever it's awake). It's not much, but every bit counts I guess!

The good thing is that even if I leave the folding should continue. The idea is that it will become a life of it's own so that it keeps on going no matter who is running things. We'll have to see. My daily rate keeps moving up though. You gotta love that!

Guys, I don't mean to blow my own horn, but I just about took a crap in my pants when I saw this. Here is a snapshot of what my daily folding rate has grown to. This project is going way above my guestimates. If I keep adding folding to this many machines every week, in a month from now my daily rate is going to be insane.

I agree. Until a month ago or so, I relied on my computers at home and some of my friends. I kept plugin' away until I was able to get my mits on a massive quatity of computers. You never know when you will get your hands on hundreds of computers. I never thought I would have the chance to contribute like this. I'm just glad to help out any way I can.

Well, let's have a little math review. Are you aware of the term "exponential growth"? How about "constant growth"? Let's look at some examples.
Here is my folding graph:
http://www.osirus.biz/me1.jpg
Here is yours:
http://www.osirus.biz/you1.jpg
You will notice that your line is straight. This is what we refer to as "constant growth". This means that you will keep moving forward at a high rate, but at one which remains constant. You should now take notice of my graph. It curves upward. This is what is known as "exponential growth". This means that my daily rate will keep moving forward at a high rate, but keep getting higher every day. If my rate continues to grow every day at the current exponent, I should be folding at about 25000 a day after one month. I already fold about as much as you do in a day, and I haven't even gotten started yet!
I just thought I should add these as visual aids.
My last weeks growth:

Your last weeks constant:

The other day there was a post on how much machines we would need to kick Team os X but and become the number one Mac team again. The guy who posted this said that he had a lot of 2.6 ghz procs (or that was his idea, or something). Well under the shower it hit me, or I started thinking about it again:
One 2.6 machine does 100 points per day, maybe a bit more. Team os X is outproducing us by about 50.000-28.000= 22.000 points per day. Therefore, it is save to say that we need at least 22.000/100= 220 machines! So, the conclusion is: Who has a good lab or a couple of classrooms with fast computers? :D

Well... I was the one who asked...
I could get my hands on a bunch of machines which I THINK run at 2.6 ghz, but it wouldn't be for a few weeks, and it might take some negotiation with the owner.
edit:
It wouldn't be 220 machines....

Team Os X here we come! :D BTW, you do have so many machines? Also tried doing this at work, but can't seem to get through the firewall. Proxy and port are good, but it can't connect to the outside world. Even had the IT department looking for it. But after a few days they said that they didn't want to put any more time in it because it was a program that they didn't support.... And we are a researchcompany, also part in medical, go figure...

We had some proxy troubles too. I can't remember how we got around them though. I know that the proxy options in the folding app did nothing to get through it. I think as long as you are a domain user that has access through port 80 then you should be able to run folding and get through the proxy.
Dreadnought
May 31, 2004, 11:43 AM
port 80... will give it a try tomorrow! Well, the FAH app normally uses port 8080, which is the same with our firewall. So after installing the app and setting everything up, including the proxy and the port, it still couldn't connect to the outside world. Our firewall is blocking it for some reason, and according to our IT department it shouldn't be doing that. They think it has something to do with the standard port folding uses, which is the same port we use. Does this make sense?

ah... ok...
You would make a .bat file and put it in the working directory of F@H. Then add it to the startup items.
sample:
@echo off
set FAHPROGRAM="C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\Desktop\FAH4Console.exe"
@echo on
%FAHPROGRAM% -advmethods -verbosity 9
pause
Basically, this tells the computer to run F@H from the specified directory (change it to match your directory (where the F@H executable is)). It then tells it to run using the "-advmethods" and the "verbosity 9" tags. You would just put "-local" there.
Keep in mind, you will need to change the directories.
To use this, paste it into a .txt file and save it. Then rename the file "name.bat" where name is whatever you named it.
Is that clear?
edit:
There are other ways to do this, that is just the way I use.
If you are running F@H as a service, I need to know what program you used to make it run as a service first.

You output is simply amazing! I checked the stats and it says 9 active processors , what in the heck are they? Man if our team had a bunch more of those Team Mac OS X Rumors would rock!
Keep up the good work!
cjc343
Jun 2, 2004, 11:59 AM
:D I think that the 9 processors has something to do with being behind government security... all of the computers there probably get registered as one. The other problem could be with the way that F@H is being installed, where it is not giving each machine a valid machine ID because the configuration file is just being pasted over and over again on new machines..... just my guess...

Jun 2, 2004, 12:51 PM
so the first one is using the .bat file? and the second is just running it?
If you look at the machine ID, it says 4 on one, and 1 on the other... from my understanding, the Machine ID tells it which processor to run on (although I'm sure there is more involved) I would try running it with a machine ID of 1.
Second: I don't know exactly which port F@H uses, but I would start by disabling your firewall and seeing if it works. If it does, that is your biggest problem.
Anyone know what port F@H uses? (I haven't had any trouble....)
Dreadnought
Jun 2, 2004, 03:19 PM
The first picture is the .bat file. The second is the normal console version which I downloaded from stanford. I tried everything, so also tried to give it an other number (4 this time, normally it is no. 1). If you download the graphical interface of FAH it says it uses standard port 8080. Also our IT department says that port 8080 is open for every kind of application. And to disable the firewall... That is the problem, I can't do that... There are about 1000 computers connected to our network and I am just a bookkeeper.
I will set it tomorrow on machine ID 1 and see what happens. But even know it should get a WU from Stanford, but it doesn't. And that is my problem! Your .bat file gives more information then the console version does. But it still can't connect to an assignment server...
cjc343
Jun 3, 2004, 02:35 AM
the "-verbosity 9" tag tells it to output more information to the screen than usual.... the "-advmethods" tells it to try not to get tinkers... athough you still will, you SHOULD get less.
ok... not being able to disable the firewall could be a problem... oh well...
Do you know if you use a proxy server? Did you configure it to use a Proxy server?
Did you change ANY of the options besides User Name and Team when you set the preferences?
Do you know if port 80 is also open to all applications? (It normally is...)

What version of Windows are you running?
Are you using the F@H console version provided by Stanford, or have you also been using some Windows equivilent of InCrease or Mac68k's scripts?
If you try using the graphical client, do things work?

CJC343, both links are getting errors at my work in internet explorer. Can't load the page it says. I am running windows 2000 at work and running the console version from Stanford. Also tried the graphical client from Stanford, but that was the same story... So, if I understand correctly, our firewall is blocking access to the assignmentservers, right? Something else I also discovered, we have a 50 mb internet connection, but it is really slow... Also you can not listen to internet radio, not through Itunes or any other program. want to share the errors you are getting with us?
All folding apps will access the same servers on the same port.
50 MB/s? or 50 Mb/s? (megabyte vs. megabit.... very confusing, but large difference)
This sounds like it is a firewall problem so far. Go talk with your network administrator and ask him/her/it to open up those web addresses using those ports. If they insist that they are, insist that they aren't and show them that you can't load the page.... then tell them that you have asked other people outside the network and they can access it easily.
