View Full Version : Who still uses a PowerPC Mac?

Jul 1, 2009, 08:54 AM
I do.

Jul 1, 2009, 08:55 AM
Ahhh dmmcintyre3's thread of the day.

I have one but I rarely use it.

Jul 1, 2009, 08:56 AM
I still use my imac G3 for mundane tasks. I've moved to my thinkpad for everything else since the new macbook keyboards are not to my liking.

Jul 1, 2009, 08:57 AM
On the road my trusty 12"PB is my main machine. I also use it for recording lectures, F@H, and occasional games that ran nicely under Tiger :D

Jul 1, 2009, 09:03 AM
Your survey needs more options.

For example, how about those of us who use both on a daily basis?

Jul 1, 2009, 09:08 AM
I use a dual 1.8Ghz Power Mac G5 as my very main machine.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:10 AM
I have a G5 iMac with a faulty screen that I use only occasionally.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:13 AM
My mum has a Mac Mini G4 that I gave her that I guess I use occasionally, setting up software etc etc.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:14 AM
I use a dual 1.8GHz PowerMac G5 at work. I have an identical system at work that I use for testing stuff on. At home I have an old G3 that I use for, well, nothing really just for kicks. Besides that I have a Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, and 2009 Mac Mini. The PPC stuff runs quite fine, but the Intel stuff runs better :)

Jul 1, 2009, 09:15 AM
I was using a Powerbook frequently (mostly for text stuff) up until Dec last year. I gave it to my dad but I still use it from time to time.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:16 AM
I use a dual 1.8GHz PowerMac G5 at work.

Same here. I also use a Power Mac dual core 2.0 at home as my main computer, and a 2.4 Black MacBook on the road.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:18 AM
We have a 15" PB G4 still in regular use. It's hanging in there, just!

Jul 1, 2009, 09:19 AM
Only one so far who is 100% intel. Guess it is my place to say Snow Leopard :p:D

Jul 1, 2009, 09:21 AM
Almost daily, I use these:
PB15 (PPC)
PM933 (PPC)
MBP15 (Intel)
iMac (Intel)
Homebuilt PC (Athlon)

Out of these, my primary is the MBP15.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:23 AM
My work Mac is a Dual Core 2.3 PPC G5. My desktop at home is a 2.5 Dual Processor PPC G5.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:24 AM
I have a G4 cube that I use occasionally but as time goes on, I find it more difficult to have it sit there and eat up desk space. I'm tempted to sell it or put it away in my closet.

I loved the cube design and it was my first "power mac" (had an iMac an SE before that) but now its more of a dust collector :(

Jul 1, 2009, 09:27 AM
Last generation iBook G4 here. That's my main computer, but I'm trying to get a 13" MPB this summer.

I also have two iMac G3s for fun, but I'm going to be shooting one up shortly. :D

Jul 1, 2009, 09:32 AM
Still using my G4 till I can afford to build an intel.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:46 AM
I still use my 17" PB G4 on a regular basis, though I have to say the C2D Mini has taken over as the main machine. The PB is the living room computer. I use it when I get bored or have an ADD attack while watching TV.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:53 AM
PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5GHz as my machine in the home office/studio.

A brand new (3 months) Macbook Pro 17" for working when I am not in the office... I am untilizing both machine equally.

I second the opinion that the survey doesn't have enough choices...

My everyday is a g4 imac and macbook, so 50/50 ppc and intel:cool:

Jul 1, 2009, 09:58 AM
Even though I have a Pro now, my wife and kids use a networked iMac G5, and next to my Pro is my iMac G4 where I use all my legacy programs from before OS X.

Jul 1, 2009, 10:14 AM
Dual 2.3 GHz G5 PowerMac , 4.5 Gb RAM
Aluminium 15" PowerBook 1 GHz G4, 2 Gb RAM

Desktop still generally fine. Laptop struggling.

Jul 1, 2009, 10:19 AM
PowerMac Dual 2.5 G5 web server in my lab.
iBook G4 1.14 in the lab for students to use.
Kids each have iMac G4 1.0
uMBP Intel as my portable computer.

Jul 1, 2009, 10:20 AM
I have a iMac G4 in the kitchen that I use with Slingplayer to watch TV and surf the net some. Best looking TV ever.

Jul 1, 2009, 10:24 AM
iBookG4user voted 100% intel. Funny considering his username.

Jul 1, 2009, 10:27 AM
iMac in sig block...last PPC iMac. Still works/looks great and is my desktop. Plan on upgrading to intel iMac in near future.

Jul 1, 2009, 10:34 AM
We have an dual USB iBook G3 in the bedroom attached to a set of powered speakers for tunes and occasional web browsing. I just sleeps all the time till awakened. Not alot of room for tunes, but it gets us dressed in the AM.

Jul 1, 2009, 10:38 AM
PowerMac G4 as server. Everything else is intel.

Jul 1, 2009, 11:15 AM
i just got my unibody macbook pro last week, but up until then i used my 12' powerbook g4 as my main machine...ill still use my powerbook on a daily basis because it is just so portable but my new intel monster is in charge from now on :D

In my house we have:

a PowerMac G4 Cube
an old TiBook (don't know the exact specs; it's my dad's)
a G4 Mac Mini
2 G3 "Gumdrop" iMacs (one has a slot loading CD drive, the other has a pop-out)
2 old iBooks (clamshell versions) one grey and one aqua

We all use those as secondary machines

My dad uses a white Intel iMac
I use the comp in my signature
My younger sister uses an Intel Mac Mini
My mom uses her work laptop usually, but she has a Blackbook as well

+1, although I have stopped using the powerbooks wirelessly to the net because I couldn't get them to connect to a newer router with WPA2 as my network's encyryption option. But I still do use a 12" and a 15" powerbook most days for one thing or another, even though my main books are an MBA and a blackjack now. I keep all my classical music in a separate itunes library a 12" book, and a lot of movies on the 15".

Anyway I didn't vote on the poll 'cause my usage doesn't fit any slot!

I've got two PPC Macs at the moment (G4 iBook and G5 PowerMac). My new Intel iMac will arrive next week some time, so my G5 will be moving to my parents house to replace their G3/300 desktop. I'll be holding on to my iBook for a while since it's handy for watching videos, streaming music and it's what I use to run my model railroad.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:21 PM
I use the eMac in my sig for my main machine. It runs Leopard very well, considering it only has 512 MB of RAM. I expect it to continue to be a great machine for the next two or three years.

Jul 1, 2009, 09:23 PM
Workgroup Server 9150. I don't use it regularly - maybe a couple of times a month.

Jul 2, 2009, 12:11 AM
I still have quite a few. :)

Jul 2, 2009, 12:41 AM
PowerBook G4 1.33GHz used most frequently, so I suppose it's my Main. :)

I love my PowerBook! MBPs are for the weak!

Jul 2, 2009, 12:44 AM
I use a G5 xserve pretty regularly, although it doesn't belong to me personally.

Jul 2, 2009, 02:22 AM
The G4 Digital Audio in my sig is my main computer.

Jul 2, 2009, 04:52 AM
I've still got a collection of Xserve G5s and a PowerBook G4. Nothing wrong with them except I can't run Snow Leopard :(

Jul 2, 2009, 05:31 AM
I selected "Yes it is my main computer" but an option labeled "100% PowerPC" would have been more accurate.

Main computer: 500 MHz G4 Cube (No, I'm not kidding)
On the road: 800 MHz TiBook
Music/Video management: 2 GHz iMac G5

Jul 2, 2009, 06:20 AM
Im still using Powermac G5 dual 2.5ghz, handles cinema 4D rendering and Vectorworks better than my Early 2008 Macbook Pro. Although my macbook pro can handle other things better, like video work. Pretty happy working from both.

Jul 2, 2009, 06:36 AM
I do my powerbook G4 gets used in the morning whilst eating breakfast, toast and a cup of tea while checking the macrumors / news

It's a PB G4 867MHZ, 1.25GB and 120 GB hdd

Jul 2, 2009, 08:53 AM
The iBook G4 in my signature line is my wife's main computer. We have an Intel iMac, but it's in the office and obviously is not portable.

Jul 2, 2009, 09:18 AM
100% intel for me.

Jul 2, 2009, 09:22 AM
I still use my Tibook from time to time, ran a software update check yesterday on it in fact. I noticed that the LED in the centre of the monitor is not working which is a pain as it's a good confirmation that the machine is starting up. Other than the LED it still runs amazingly well! :)

Jul 2, 2009, 09:24 AM
Duh, I forgot to mention my work machine. I have a dual 2GhZ G5 at work. It still does the job, but I'm hoping to get my boss's hand me down MBP, so I can replace this machine and my Dell laptop.

Jul 2, 2009, 09:25 AM
Used to use a PowerBook G4, but now I'm all Intel.

Jul 2, 2009, 10:19 AM
I still use my PowerMac G4 MDD for a lot of things.

Jul 2, 2009, 10:31 AM
I have 3 computers.

1. Primary, iMac Intel (running Leopard)
2. Secondary, iMac PowerPC (running Tiger, used for Classic)
3. Tertiary, PowerSpec PC (running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, but it's got hardware problems and isn't used much)

Jul 2, 2009, 10:41 AM
Intel, within it is.

Shotgun OS
Jul 2, 2009, 01:31 PM
I use an iMac G5 as my main computer, but probably not for long because college is coming and I need a new computer.

Jul 2, 2009, 01:48 PM
My wife uses a Dual 2.5GHz G5 as her main machine. I'm on an intel iMac at work and intel MacBook Pro at home.

Jul 2, 2009, 02:21 PM
I still use an eMac 800mhz at work as my primary machine, although it's about to get replaced by a new Mini. At home I use the iMac G5 occasionally and also use my MacBook to couch surf and while on the go.

Jul 2, 2009, 02:26 PM

I'm really hoping you also have a G4 Cube.... :p;):D

Jul 2, 2009, 02:28 PM
I have an iMac G4 I gave to my parents and use a 15" Powerbook G4 every single day. I wish I could use a G4 forever

Jul 2, 2009, 03:14 PM
I utilize a G5 at my day job. Sure is nice to go home to my monster MacPro.

Jul 2, 2009, 04:57 PM
PowerMac G4 dual 800
12" Powerbook 1.5
Use the powerbook every day, but not as my main machine. Powermac sits in my basement as my printer base. Might phase it out of the house soon, who knows. :)

Jul 2, 2009, 05:39 PM
My household uses a PowerMac dual 2.7 G5 liquid cooled with a 23" ACD on a daily basis and it is definitely the workhorse. It's an early 2005 model that I've added cards for more firewire and usb ports. The video card is a 6800 but it still works okay. I'll probably look soon for whatever the latest video card was for it. It is always slept when not in use and the only time it is rebooted is when there is an Apple update which requires it. I always try to break the uptime record but an update usually ruins the party.

There are four users and occasional guest users that are logged in daily. Mostly for email, browsing, photo editing, word processing, iTunes a lot, voip and the dvd player occasionally. There are quite a few widgets I use but wouldn't be able to you what I have installed; too many. There are two (ahem) Warcraft players in the house and it runs WoW fine except we get some lag during huge PvP melees.

There is a slot loading G3 Graphite iMac in the basement that hasn't been turned on in a while.

Jul 2, 2009, 05:54 PM
Well I collect Macs, both PPC and Intel, and I like to put them to work :D

I use an iMac G3 graphite, iMac G4, iBook G3 snow, PowerBook G3 Wallstreeet, and a new 24 inch intel aluminum iMac as my main machine.

Jul 2, 2009, 06:35 PM
I have a MacBook Pro as my main machine, but I use my 1.5GHz 12" Powerbook almost as much, as well as several of the Macs you see in my sig. Only one other person in my family has an Intel Mac, all the rest use PPC all the time.

Jul 2, 2009, 07:26 PM
i have a maxed out power mac g3 beige minitower that i use as my vintage gaming system. os 9 games run beautifully on it especially the ones w/ glide support, and as for os x games, i simply replace the 3dfx card w/ the radeon 9200 and boot into 10.2.8!

i use the computer almost daily and exclusively to play games since it's too obsolete to be used for anything else.

Jul 2, 2009, 07:37 PM
I'm really hoping you also have a G4 Cube.... :p;):D

Heh, yep, it's currently resting peacefully in the closet. The iMac replaced it as the primary home computer a few years ago. I've also got a G4 tower, a couple G3 iMacs, 2 iBooks, and a dozen or so vintage Macs including an original 128k. Also got a IIGS. I only listed the currently used ones. :apple:

Jul 2, 2009, 07:41 PM
Powerbook G4, 15" Al revB 1.5/512/80/128vram 10.4.11

niece/nephew get to play on the old iMac G3 333MHz

Jul 2, 2009, 11:16 PM
I have my powerbook G4 I use when out and about.

Jul 2, 2009, 11:17 PM
iMac G5 gen 1 all the way. Love this baby (would still love to get an intel. shhh dont tell her) :p:)

Jul 2, 2009, 11:26 PM
Mac Mini PPC 1.42 GHz today and it has served valiantly since 2005

Will be replaced by the 2009 Mini when Snow Leopard hits.

Jul 2, 2009, 11:29 PM
PowerBook G4 1.67 Ghz, 2G ram, 160 GB HDD gets the most use lately. Running 10.5.7.

Jul 3, 2009, 05:43 AM
My MacBook (C2D) gets used everyday so it's 100% intel here. I'd love to buy an iMac G3 to use and experiment with every now and then.

Jul 3, 2009, 12:42 PM
Up until a couple weeks ago, I was 100% PPC. Now I have an Intel iMac, but I still do use my iBook frequently although it is not good for anything other than text-based internet pages, email, text editing, etc.

Oct 13, 2010, 11:51 AM
This 15" PB was my first Mac purchase, I took delivery a week before the Intel Mac's went on sale. I wanted a G4 and assumed that in 3 or 4 years I would be ready for a new laptop so I would buy a MBP next time.. However, I am not ready to retire this one yet. My only complaint is with the airport reception and on that topic I am not alone. I would be nice to upgrade from 10.4 though.

Oct 13, 2010, 03:05 PM
I don't because I'm still quite new to the Mac, but if I did I would probably still use it because I would look after any computer I had :D

Oct 13, 2010, 03:13 PM
I have a G4 Mac Mini for occasional desktop use, and my daughter has an iMac G5 iSight that is coming back to me, when she gets a new MacBook for school...

Oct 13, 2010, 04:46 PM
My main computer is my MacBook, but my wife is now the main user of my PowerBook and my iTunes library is still on that computer.

Oct 13, 2010, 04:54 PM
Never had a PowerPC Mac myself, however, I do occasionally use the G5 at work.

Oct 13, 2010, 07:12 PM
My G4 iBook is still my trusty road computer.

Dec 18, 2010, 12:20 PM
I've got a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8ghz. Upgraded many times. I've got an iPad to play with now but I still do my heavy lifting with the G5. It serves up all my media to my Apple TV.
