View Full Version : WWDC expectations?

I didbn't know where to post this, but I was wondering if either the iPods or the Displays seem likely to update at WWDC. I heard somewhere like AI that the displays may not come out till september...

Anyways, what came out last year, and what will come out this year other than iMacs and Tiger???

My 2 cents....

The new G5 iMac will be the big news @ WWDC. That and the already-announced preview of 10.4.

the iMac G5 will be nice, but that's not a given, just speculation - I think the displays are way overdue for an update...

What do you think about displays? When? I am dying to get one to go with my new 15" pb, but I hear so much about how there will be big price drops, so I really can wait if it'll save me at least several c's for a 20".

Just wait. It'll be between June 28th and January. It'll be worth it.

I doubt he has inside info. However that comment makes me aggravated.

Between June 28th and January?? I want those damn displays by WWDC or I'll find a reasonably priced LCD to go with my 2.5 G5. If that sounds like a threat, it is. I really feel that there isn't much that is holding back new screens... what LCD yields were low?? :p

If you want one so bad, just grab the 20" Cinema Display... It rocks!
I have no inside info, but the rumors indicate they'll be aluminum themed 20", 23", and 30". Sounds worth it to me!

Woah, I was thinking January said "JULY" why would they NOT release them SOON?!?

@ WWDC...

Soire, sorry I didn't realize it said -January... ridiculous... of course I hope they would have them out by then, but they need them out NOW!

1. Tiger beta for developers - 100% certainty

2. Other software updates including Xcode, Remote Desktop, etc. - 100%

3. Displays - 75% based on the Brilliant Savings promo ending at WWDC
4. iMacs - 75% - last updated 7 months ago, recent eMac update
5. iPods - 25% the mini won't get updated for sure; and the 60gb drives won't be ready for a while
6. One more thing - 50%

Well if channel supplies are any indication, the iMac G5 maybe more than rumor. Either that or we could see an iMAc G4 dual.

I just don't see iPods at the WWDC. The conference is for developers, not consumers, so I would expect more developer related stuff. Maybe if they were announcing a new SDK for the iPod or something, but I think new software or hardware (ie computers) is more likely.

A surprise new Power Mac G5 model, where we finally reach 3GHz!

iMac G5's with dual 2GHz processors in an all aluminum enclosure and with bluetooth, AE, and widescreen LCD's standard! starting at only $999

eMac G5 with single 1.8GHz G5's across the line and a new black plastic shell! starting at only $699

NEW Aluminum displays ranging in size from 20" to 50", starting at only $399

and DA DA DUMMMMMM, the long long long loooong awaited PowerBook G5's, only one inch thick, 1.8-2.3GHz G5's, widescreen across the line from 13" to 17", liquid cooling AND 8x superdrives! starting at only $1199

Also, 4th generation iPods with colour screens, video capabilities, built-in wifi, the much clamoured for AM/FM tuner and airport express compatibility! starting at only $199

...and all developers who attend the conference get a free 4th gen iPod!

yea...

BUT SERIOUSLY PEOPLE

I suspect, iMaac G5's probably with a 1.6GHz G5 in them, some software updates that are more developer oriented, and of course tiger beta distribution.

I wouldn't be surprised if new displays arrived either, considering that "brilliant savings" promotion ends on the 26th, perfect timing :)

Steve Jobs takes the stage and those in attendance immediately know that things are going to be quite different this year. First of all, he is shirtless and wearing skin tight pink spandex pants with 20 eyelet steel toe combat boots. He is clearly not wearing any underwear and can put Ron Jeremy to shame in the third leg department. He stands there waving his arms around wildly while sweating profusely. He announces that he is bombed out of his mind on cocaine and high powered liquid acid.

He starts by doing a demo of tiger, and repeatedly shows off the new "trails" effect when you move icons and documents around the screen. "This is ********** awesome", Jobs says as he pulls a giant Marley spliff out of his waist band and sparks it up on stage. "Enough of this tiger ******", Jobs screams (very awkwardly) as he reveals the imac g5. The crowd goes wild, and Jobs starts playing air guitar so fiercely on the center of the stage that the paramedics are called in to keep a close eye on him.

When he boots up the new imac, the sound of a jet engine fills the room, as Steve's private jet comes crashing through the keynote screen. Rodney Dangerfield pokes his head out of the cockpit and waves Steve in. Jobs salutes the audience and does a quadruple back arial flip and lands perfectly in the plane. Rodney and Steve fly the jet through the roof while Olivia Newton John's "I honestly Love You" blasts at full volume through all available speakers in the conference room.

2. Dual 2.5 G5 Powermacs shipping June 28th or within the next week.

3. iMac G5s (1.4 - 1.8GHz) / Radeon 9800 (128vram) in top of the line (20 inch) with 512 megs ram.

4. Xserve G5 2.3GHz for VT.

5. The iCube... (G5 processor @ 1.4 or 1.6GHz for $999)

6. New Displays at 20, 23, and 30 inches. ($999, $1499, and $2499)

I don't know about the iPods, I think they deserve an update, especially the mini, but I don't know if they will. It seems like the next revision will have 60Gb in the iPod and 5Gb in the mini. These drives are brand new though, so I doubt we'll see them at WWDC.

Y'know what I was thinking was that the iPod could go 4th generation without a drive size increase, or maybe it goes to 50 gigs? I heard a rumor a while back that 50 gig drives were being produced, but I guess that's just BS.

Anybody recall exactly what came out last year? And is it a rolling release over four days, or is it a "Sha-Zaam! Here's all the products" sort of thing on the first day?

GrannySmith_G5

I am figuring there will be at least one thing NOT on this list:
iMac G5

Could be something new in the desktop area (PowerMac 8,1) ?
Could be new software?
Could be new device?

I guess we'll have to wait and see....

Honestly, there's absolutely no way this is going to happen. Apple would never release an update so quickly after the previous update.

It hasn't even been three months since the new PBs were announced; even less since they started shipping.

edit: you actually might want to wait a little while. It couldn't hurt to see if you get a certificate guaranteeing you a free copy of Tiger after it is annouced. Tiger probably won't ship until the fall, so you might not get that free copy if you only wait a month, but you never know.

Of course, it might be worth more to you to have this extra month of computing bliss. I bought my powerbook a few weeks before the last update; at first I kicked myself. But now, I'm just happy that I have a great little laptop that I love.

Definitely doubt that. They released the rev. Cs just 2 months ago, so it's not very likely there'll be new ones - much more like a revamp of the iMac!

I'd predict new Powerbooks maybe in October/November, but not before then.

I thought certificates for Panther showed up in late September. And Tiger might ship even later this year. I wouldn't wait 3-4 months just to save a hundred bucks on the OS upgrade.

-No new Power Macs (duh); they were just updated, for all of you who think that they'll release 3Ghz at WWDC

-No PowerBooks or iBooks; both were just updated, and why would they stick another G4 in a PB? the next update will be G5s, sometime in Dec. or Jan. (Macworld SF, anyone?)

-Maybe iMac G5s; remember, they said they were having the same problems with the iMac as with the PB with putting G5s inside

-Maybe iPods; perhaps just a capacity increase to 60Gb (thanks, Toshiba, for leaking), but more likely a complete overhaul w/ new features (color screen for album covers and maybe photos, click wheel, etc.)

I think most of the keynote will be an intro to Tiger.

I would wager that we will never see a G5 in a PowerBook.

We've seen the major heat issues with the new 90nm chip (Liquid Cooling, anyone?) And I really can't see apple finding any way of putting a G5 into something the size of a notebook.

I'd guess the next PowerBooks will contain some new freescale chip; something over 2.0GHz, carrying a different name than G4. This would make more sense, one chip for the desktop line and one for the portable line, even the PC world is figuring that one out, using the pentium 4 for desktops and the pentium m for notebooks.

Eh, but that's just my 2¢

Flynnstone
Jun 18, 2004, 08:36 PM
We will see a G5 PowerBook. It may not be a 970 or 970FX, but it will be a G5.
The liquid cooling is power density issue. The 970FX dissipates less power than the 970 at certain clock rates. But the 970FX is based on 90nm technology which means the die is smaller. Lets say, (for arguement sake) that the 970 puts out 90watts at 2GHz and the 970FX puts out 90 watts at 2.5 GHz and that the die area of the 970FX is 1/2 of the 970. That means the 970fx has twice the power density! Kind of like a light bulb and heat blanket.

No matter what Apple or IBM does with the G5 chips, they wont ever be in the PowerBooks. Sure, the G4s were designed for a desktop too, but they aren't near as power intensive and barbecue-grill hot. I think that it would be more like a G6 or G5M processor, one that is highly modified to be low voltage and around 2ghz.

So that's my $.02

1. Imac G5- 97%, if it is not a G5 then it will be a silent update like powermacs.

2. Tiger ships November

3. a new Mac machine for the 20th anniversery of the Mac( Powermac8,1 anyone)

4. Ipods are announced. Ships July, with a 20 GB,40 Gb, and 50 GB. We will see the 60 GB around November.

2. ipod... I expect new ipods to come out in 20, 40, and 60 gb models with a mini like scroll wheel. The 20 and 40 would be ready in july/august while the 60 would be available in sep/oct...

3. updated displays for sure so they now match the exterior of the g5 desktops..

4. imac g5? might, happen.... but wouldn't steve want a lot of fan fare for that? perhaps wait unt MWSF for a imac g5

5. new iApp? possibly something music driven? Hmm.... ;)

(*) As far as iPods are concerned, while I assume a 60GB model will be announced, I don't really see this as "news". I'd like to see an announcement of the next gen iPod, at least with a color screen, possibly with ties to AirPort Express/AirTunes.

(*) New displays are a given, if not at WWDC then very shortly after. The current ones are just too old.

(*) New iMacs. All signs point to it. I'm guessing a slow G5 if heat can be managed, perhaps a 1.6 slowed to 1.4 speeds? Undoubtedly, the next iMac will come with a crappy graphics card. It seems to be a hallmark....

Well I've changed my predictions since the LeeTom WWDC thread.

I say yes to G5 iMac, yes to updated displays including a 30 inch model (or something above 25 inches), and a quick mention about the PowerMacs. Oh, and yes to Steve wearing a black turtleneck.

I say maybe to iPod updates - if anything, price cuts on the current mini models - and maybe to updated Wi-Fi iPods. I also say maybe to a brand new software product.

I say probably not to a PDA-like product that gets both announced and released on June 28.

I say no way will we be able to keep some people from ranting on these forums like 13-year-olds after the expo.

That's probably the most realistic prediction I've yet read. My only fear is that the displays aren't released until after WWDC and we all break down and decide to order a current plastic POS only to get burned a couple weeks later by the ones that ThinkSecret predicted...

Me too! I don't *need* it this minute b/c i have a pb but want the ext. display 20", so waiting. I'm not even so concerned with a new model (unless it's something really cool that I totally must have.) but rather don't want to buy a display for $1100 only have it drop in price $300 or more. imac g5 (if not, then certainly soon after)

if there is a "one last thing" it will be the imac g5.

All I know is that Apple hasn't hyped this years conference as much as they did last years. I haven't heard a peep about tiger besides the less than exciting report from appleinsider, and the spoken interface features which we've known about for ever. Last year everyone was predicting the powermac g5, which obviously came true. All the talk until recently was about the 3ghz powermac being announced this year. Since that's out of the question now, we are all clutching to the other rumors or obvious next steps from apple(imac desperate for upgrade....). I wonder when we will see a whole new computer product( not a powermac, powerbook, imac, ibook). Wouldn't that be neat?

5. The iCube... (G5 processor @ 1.4 or 1.6GHz for $999)

6. New Displays at 20, 23, and 30 inches. ($999, $1499, and $2499)

MMMMMMmmmmmmm :)

Looks like a pretty good guess to me.

iCube :) only if its a wireless music/multimedia station with HDTV tuner...no need for G5...

I sure hope the new displays come out at the end of the month. I already sold my 17" display in hopes of getting the best possibly price for it. If not, I always have my Sony 22" CRT in the closet.

if there is a "one last thing" it will be the imac g5.

Could not have said it better, Granny. Unless they spring another Airport Express-like surprise.

Is there a precedent for "major" product announcement overseas?

Well... they did announce the 15" AlBook at Mac Expo Paris last year. If that counts as a 'major' product announcment.

The extra thing you are all talking about ... a wireless picture frame that works with Airport Extreme and Express. Fully integrated with iPhoto 4.5.

Later expandable to show movies from iMovie and iDVD.

If you all want to say I'm nuts, wait and answer this first. Tell me why this isn't logical and brilliant?

Is there something you're not telling us? :) But yes, would be cool.

Another thought....may be dumb, but... Any one know if its gonna be broadcasted over the net?

Usually is, but the broadcast is released at a later stage sometimes too, right? Would have to check on the site, but if it is broadcast live, they'd be wording it up on the site pretty soon...

All I hope for is a 20 gb ipod model to be readily available. I predict a 60 gb would show up, but I don't have a need for 60. I rather have them remove the current 15 and replace it with the 20 gb. :o

I'm totally with you on this. I think this is ready to come to market and I'm going to explain why with the help of Airport Express. In addition to what you've spoken about imagine this scenario. The wireless picture frame sits on your coffee table showing photos from your last vacation. Your brand new Airport Express sits behind your entertainment center streaming music from iTunes into your speakers. You want to change the song, so you pick up your wireless picture frame and touch the screen. Suddenly you've created a remote connection to your main computer wherever in the house it may be. You change the playlist, or advance the song using your "Thin Terminal / iFrame."

Now, it helps if anybody can remember that Apple added Multiple-Concurrent Users into Mac OS X. This would allow one person to be using the main Apple in the house while another is logged into a concurrent session changing the iTunes song.

Apple could also take this opprotunity to make things better for its customers by providing them a service many people don't know they need (nobody here though) Backups. Put a HD in that iFrame / Thin Client / Tablet to backup all your digital photos.

An iFrame / Thin Client with wireless could easily provide web-surfing capability!

An iFrame / Thin Client with wireless could do ebooks? Put one on the fridge to dispaly the famillys iCal?

Think of the Airport Express? A single $129 device that will serve many different people in many ways. Mine is going to stream iTunes into my home stereo. Your's might extend your network. So, my iFrame is gonna be a thin client to change my music & let me surf the web. Your's might just display photos. Its OK that everybody does not use the thing to its full potential.

Does anyone remember the Sony digital picture frame from a few years back, it used a Memory Stick I think, and was quite expensive

Does anyone think new powerbooks possibly? I am in the market for one and could either buy one now or wait a month or so. What do you think?

Wait 8 days at least!

Hmm, I think you might be being a little optimistic there - but it might almost be worth it to see the uproar on the forums from all those who have JUST bought new April 2004 Powerbooks - myself included! ;)
