Duke Nukem 3D for the iPhone has just made its debut in the App Store. This version of the popular first person shooter game first appeared in 1996 for the PC, with subsequent ports to other platforms along with multiple expansion packs and add-ons made available in the years since.

TouchArcade has taken a first look (http://toucharcade.com/2009/08/10/duke-nukem-3d-hits-app-store-with-control-issues/) at the app, noting that it "appears to be a rather full implementation of the PC original" though there are some on-screen analog control issues that hamper gameplay. According to a post (http://forums.toucharcade.com/showpost.php?p=416667&postcount=85) in the TouchArcade forums by George Broussard, who co-authored the original game, these issues will be reviewed and addressed in an update.

Duke Nukem 3D (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=325995561&mt=8) (link opens iTunes) became available in the App Store yesterday evening and currently has an introductory price of $2.99.

I remember finding a demo of this on a MacAddict CD and playing it through repeatedly. Then I tried to rent the N64 version and my mother wouldn't let me, favoring the more child-friendly Banjo Kazooie.

I used to play this game all the time. I wonder if the strippers with tassels made it to the iPhone port. :D

I'm debating on buying this during my lunch break...

I would buy it if it has the cheat codes like Wolfenstein 3d on the iPhone did... I'm not good enough at FPSs to play most of them without it.

Controls are a bit wonky. I think the Doom controls are a lot better. For me it's a classic and enjoying it but hope they do some improvements in the next update.

I have an iPhone 3GS and it runs great.

It doesn't run that great on the 3GS. There are times when the framerate doubles (walking into the corners of rooms with not many textures) and then the framerate halves when there's a lot going on.

Refresh my memory, but what did Duke Nukem 3D run on when it came out? What processor speed?

I remember running this game on my Gateway that I bought in 1996. It had a 133 MHz Pentium processor, 16 MB of RAM and a 1.33 GB hard drive. It also ran Windows 95.

I would say that the iPhone 3G S could run this with no problems, unless it was a really, really, REALLY bad port.

WilliamG
Aug 11, 2009, 03:39 PM
Yeah it ran fine on my P100 Gateway system. The 3GS is definitely more than capable of running this game better than it does. But the framerate at times is definitely all over the place.

Yeah, that was what I seemed to remember (but I think it was even slower than that...I'm thinking 33 MHz). Maybe not having a keyboard causes some issues.

In the PSO version the strippers were with the tassels, but the geisha girls are in the sample pics on the App store, do THEY do what they used to?:D

I think I am gonna have to get this one, I found my old copy last week and was about to play it, this may be in the stars for me.

Edit: Geisha girls have a bikini on now under kimono. Controls are a little odd and will take some getting used to, but even though only five minutes with it, it is workable and well worth it, I love it. Now hopefully the update won't be vaporware.

Isn't this page normally/mostly about apps anyway? Some news, but a lot many people may not care about. I for one am glad it was here, If I didn't see it here I wouldn't have known about it as I do not frequently look for games, iPhone or otherwise. So to each their own. Got me to click and buy and I am sure Arn doesn't mind that.

I think you'll need to be cryo frozen to wait out that game :P

I bought this as my account isn't empty and this is a truly historic game which paved the way for some if not many.

I hope we get Shadow Warrior, too!

Buy a copy now, it is cheaper than the original and the more who buy it the more likely a proper update will come out.

It's doom with attitude, if not boobies in this release!

I installed it on my first gen. iPod and it runs like a charme ;).
I used the iPhone-configuration program from Apple.

I bought the game first with my sec. gen. iPod. Then I downloaded the game with iTunes on my Mac. I right-clicked in iTunes on the Duke Nukem 3D icon and selected 'Show in Finder'. Copied the .ipa file to my desktop and changed .ipa in .zip :D. Unzipped the file and then I installed it with the the iPhone-configuration program (which I use for installing beta iPhone apps on my iPods).

I can't see why they left out only the first gen. iPod (the first iPhones are not restricted)? The game runs great on a first gen. iPod!!! I have also Prey and other 'havy duty' games/apps installed on my first gen. iPod and they all run just fine... Ohhh well, maybe they will allow it in the future... Untill then, this works just fine for me :D.

Greets

BTW: I love my Lego stereo speakers for my first gen. iPod! Great sound for gaming and music! Much better sound then the sec. gen. iPod build-in speaker or any iPhone speaker :).
If Apple only made their iPods or iPhones just a little longer, the same speakers would fit in the devices! They are that small and don't use that many juice... Too bad...

Have played it for at least an hour, I love it. The controls are not perfect, but more than adequate. For the price a cheap burger, I get much more satisfaction from this, but still have to deal with greasy fingerprints on my screen.:D By far my favorite App store purchase yet.

Actually yeah, he could save me. Once the real war starts, I am gonna be playing Duke Nukem on my iPod touch like it is a life and death situation, and nobody will mess with me because they will think I am already crazy. And NOBODY messes with a crazy person with something shiny and metal in their hands...

I hate the control so much. The best controls for a first person shooter are Terminator Salvation's. That game was really fun and easy to play. Other developers should take note.

I don't understand why the framerate lags in certain areas of the game. I thought the iPhone 3GS would have plenty of power to run such an old 3D game. What's the deal?

Yeah, I know the app itself should be respected, but as customers, we should get the best too. Wolfenstein for iPhone turned out just fine. Wonder what the issue is with Duke 3D.

So what I'm trying to figure out now is what exactly are the developers going to fix with the controls? Instead of touching the digital analog buttons for each movement, they're gonna allow the player to simply fixate their fingers over the controls instead?
