Thanks :D

mixes will create you different mixes for you:

such as:

hip hop one
alternative one
punk one
etc.
etc.

I had to stop genus and reupload all my information for them to show-up.

A lot of the new features are hard to get to work in itunes 9

I see, I cannot find them anywhere. Where are they supposed to be?
I think I need to do what you did, how do I go about that? I tried unchecking genius in preferences, applying and then rechecking it but it hasnt seemed to have worked.

so basically a mix is just based off a genre instead of a particular song? and it just plays limitlessly instead of having a finite playlist. Is that the difference between mix and the old genius?

Yes. They're just called genius playlists. The ones you make yourself are called genius lists. iTunes manages your Genius Mixes.

It's kind of a disappointment IMO. I only listen to hip hop and every mix it made is just named Rap Mix 1, Rap Mix 2, Rap Mix 3, etc.... So it's basically just like throwing shuffle on. Guess if you listen to a real variety it will be nice.

That's what I thought of at first. But this is more like Apple's answer to Pandora/Slacker services.

In addition to creating playlists based on particular songs, iTunes can turn your library into a set of commercial-free radio stations playing your favorite music from your library. This is called a ďGenius Mix.Ē

I think it'll come in handy in the car since it's quicker than making a Genius playlist and closer to just listening to a radio station.

Especially for long drives where you run out of songs in a Genius playlist and have to refresh or make another one.

First of all, can you do this on your iPod? Will my Genius Mixes load up onto my iPod touch?

Secondly, this reminds me a lot of the radio feature in GTA: Vice City. I've got the hip-hop on right now for my library, and I've already gotten Eminem, Beastie Boys, and now Tupac with Dre; really cool stuff.

I didn't get my hopes up to high for this event (too much else going on), so I'm enjoying some of these new features.

Well what I find disappointing about Genius Playlists is that theyíre only 25 tracks, and then they stop. Genius Mixes just keep playing, so I was hoping you could create your own too.

Hey, at least you got those names. Mine are literally just ďMix 1Ē ďMix 2Ē ďMix 3ĒÖ etc. If you look at which artists each one is based off of, you can probably figure out more closely what each mix will be like, since ďrapĒ is pretty broad.

Yeah, itís part of the 3.1 firmware, although itís been beyond buggy on the iPod for me. Theyíve been crashing like crazy, and every time they do, the album art images get all screwed up. After the first crash, the images for Mixes 7-9 were replaced with the ones from Mixes 1-3. Then next time it crashed, all the art got bumped up one and Mix 1 was the only one correct (so the art for 2-9 was what used to be 1-8Öand this was after 7-9 had already been messed up, so at this point the images for Mix 1 were also showing up on both Mixes 2 and 8, etc.)

Also, every time I switch from a Genius Mix back to anything else, repeat is always switched on. Kind of annoying.

Create a smart playlist with all of one genre in it them. Of course you know you can make a genius list go 25, 50, 75 or 100 songs long, right?

Genius Mix is actually pretty dumb in my opinion. i have 6000 hip hop/rap songs on my computer, but non of the Genius Mixes is of the rap genre. in return, i have 5 separate rock mixes, 2 pop mixes, 2 movie score mixes (i don't even have that many movie scores.), 1 r&b mix. and there's no way to configure it or expand the number of mixes i want.

Haha Iíd forgotten that. But still, what if you want to go indefinitely? I donít want to the the genre thing, because I donít even use the genres, as itís always so subjective and imprecise. None of my tracks have anything in their genre tags. I want to be able to use the intelligence of Genius. Basically all Iím asking for is for Genius Playlists to be able to go on indefinitely.

Also, I think itís a real shame that Genius Mixes canít go through iTunes DJ.

Well Genius Mixes go on indefinitely, donít they? Party Shuffle (excuse me, iTunes DJ) goes on indefinitely. Sure, they repeat eventually, but Iíd like to at least have the option to do that with a station I create myself.

You need to broaden your musical library.

Seriously how many rap "songs" can you listen to before it all blends together? 3? 4?

Iíll agree that he should broaden if he only listens to one genre, but donít be too close-minded yourself. Thereís some good and varied hip-hop out there. Donít think what you hear on the radio is all there is. Thatís just pop rap.

I have 8, count them 8, Alternative Genius mixes. However, each mix seems to have a subtheme. One seems pretty dark, another is mostly experimental, another is ambient. It's pretty cool that it knows each subgenre even though they're just tagged as alternative.

Why do people always need to attack someone's taste in music? How does what I listen to affect you in any way?

As far as the genius mixes the artists seem to be pretty mixed. Dunno where apple gets their playlist info but they need some work

Maybe it has something to do with how my music is tagged. I don't really put any info into the genre part, except occasionally east or west coast if it fits.

I am really impressed by this feature it works very well for me, I also will not that it doesnt depend on your genre tagged to the song, I have songs i have classified "punk", "rock" and "alternative" in my alternative quick mix. However is seems to group each subset of the genre together, pretty cool stuff.

clearly it has a lot of bugs! and in itunes, the mixes are not perfect, not even near! he mixes songs with very different styles, hard rock with pop and others. has someone said, itunes ignores your local definition of music genre, which sometimes is bad. if you try forcing localy a music genre it will be ignored. i think i'll stick with a smart playlist by genre! ;)

cheers

Yeah this is what I like, I've got two Electronic Mix's, one is slow, mellow electronic and the other is fast Drum n Bass stuff. I'm loving this feature :D

Am I missing something? Is the Genius Mix only available for the iPhone 3GS?

I have update iTunes, and updated genius on my mac, I have also updated the software on my iPhone 3G, and synced like the apple website suggested but still don't have the genius mix option in my iPod app. Has anyone else had these hiccups?

Why are people complaining about the genius mixes created, it's your music that you loaded on itunes...

It should definitely appear on your iPhone since even my first generation ipod touch has been updated with it.

Did you place a checkmark next to one of the actual Genius mixes under the syncing options ?

You may want to see whether you just missed the Genius button on your iPhone. I had to look for it under the 'more' section of the iTunes app on my iPod.

I finally got it to work. First, I turned Genius off (which takes a while), then back on -- though I'm not sure that accomplished much, because my first two attempts to turn it back on produced the same type of error message I'd been getting. I actually left home for a few hours, and when I returned, I tried again -- and it worked. And the Genius Mixes appeared automatically in the sidebar.

I suspect there's just too much traffic on Apple's servers. You just have to keep trying until it works. Or wait, and try again tomorrow or whatever.

Create a playlist with the Genre of Music you want, play it in Random order and on repeat. Essentially the same as Genius Mix.

That is exactly what I do. I am not sure what criteria they choose for Genius Mixes but it sucks big time. I have a genius mix titled Jazz, and I was just listening to it and it includes some of my Christmas music that isn't even close to what is classified as Jazz. WHAT A JOKE.:p:confused:

I'm having good luck with Genius Mixes, but I really wish I could at least see the playlist that's coming up (and possibly remove some songs).

My other issue is that in one of my mixes, curiously called 'Easy Listening 1' (Michael Buble, Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole etc.) I get a ton of Christmas music! I guess, yes, I do have Christmas albums from all of these artists, but that's pretty annoying in early Sept...

How are you getting 8 (or even 12 I've seen) because when I set mine up all I get are 2

urban cross over mix
grunge mix

yet I have all kinds of genres in my library, hip hop pop, rock, hard rock, metal, dance, alternative....

I love iTunes Mixes but is there a way to get songs to not show up in them because my cousin syncs her iPod with my computer and there are some songs that I absolutely hate and I don't know how to get rid of them. I have unchecked them and I have changed the genre in info but nothing helps they still sync to my iPhone when I sync the mix to it.
