New Nikon Rangefinder Camera Rumors

Some impressions about recent Apple and Nikon rumors and a few links to some interesting (but somewhat confusing) news about a New Nikon Rangefinder - that may be related to the new Leica X1.

erm, fyi, the Leica X1 is not a rangefinder camera :D Its just a compact with a SLR sensor :rolleyes:

Now if Nikon would reintroduce rangefinder (unlikely) cause they will need to reintroduce many new lenses and well you can say that Nikon still has lots of work to do with its FX lenses.

Alright, now would Nikon introduce something like the X1? Very possible, design wise, I do hope Nikon go for the current retro look trend (perhaps make it look like a old film camera with simple and clean lines, that would look cool in my opinion).

So guess now we just have to wait, just like waiting for the Apple Tablet. ;)

I don't see how they can ignore this segment, started by Sigma with Olympus, Panasonic, and Leica jumping in.

Larger frame P&S/Rangefinders bridge the gap between carrying around a dSLR and putting up with P&S sensor noise.

I'm taking my E-420 more and more places, but I wish I can afford a Digital PEN, or at least have someone come out with a 4/3 fixed lens P&S.

I can see Nikon coming out with a rangefinder with a larger sensor.

The rangefinder statement was just wishful thinking on my part really, I would actually prefer that Nikon would join the Micro Four Thirds group at this time and clone the Panasonic DMC-GF1, which has an electronic view finder (EVF) available, and a ready supply of lenses.

And I also agree that a full on Nikon rangefinder camera and lenses system would be too big and ambitious a project for Nikon to undertake at this time.

They would do much better to come out with a fixed lens/large sensor camera and cost slightly more than the G11 and less than the Digital PEN.

Yup, an APS-C will beat 4/3rds by any means anyway so why bother, besides Nikon already has the best APS-C IQ on the market :cool:

I can't really argue either of these points but Nikon is in a rut with their (high end) Coolpix line of cameras. The point I am trying to make is that Nikon needs an interchangeable lens rangefinder (or EVF) camera and yes I agree that their DX format sensors would make the most sense, but I am afraid of how long it will take them to develop this kind of system.

As far as a fixed lens DX format sensor compacts is concerned, they unfortunately never make the lens wide enough for me. I would want at least 12mm on the short end.

The 4/3 sensor isn't that much smaller than APS-C. I think the tech that each company is bringing to the table will make a bigger difference than the sensor size difference.

But I do think it makes more sense for Nikon or Canon to use APS-C and make a mirrorless mount of their own (with adapters for their regular 35mm glass). Then they can sell a new body and new lenses, and also sell more of their existing glass as well.

I would LOVE to buy a mirrorless Canon Rebel. I'm personally used to Canon, and I'm pretty certain it would be somewhat cheaper than Panasonic's and Olympus's offerings.
