My grandfather has an older iMac with OS 9 installed. He has frequent problems with it and we couldn't figure out what the problem was. We upped the amount of ram to 340 and it still ran the same. Whenever he tries to print a document from Mail (OS 9), it prints the letter about an inch long and all of the words are barely visible. He has an older Epson colour printer if it makes any difference. Usually I tell him to copy the letter and paste it into AppleWorks which is really hard for him and every time I visit I have to show him how to do it. (He's technically challenged :) )

1. As far as I know, Apple doesn't offer Mail for Mac OS 9, so what application are you talking about?
2. I'd check the printer settings - something could be wrong with the default zoom, the communication settings - a whole bunch of settings could be at fault.
3. Yet another possibility is corrupt preferences - have you tested printing in other applications?

Well its some sort of mail that originates out of Netscape. As I said, printing out of Appleworks works just fine.

How would I check the printer settings? Its an older printer.

Most Mac OS 9 printer software comes with a utility program you can use to configure the printer. Failing that, go into the offending application, and open Page Setup. From there, you can check the zoom settings, as well as possibly find a way into the printer configuration utility. If that also fails, look in the Chooser.
