Apple has begun prepping the Yerba Buena Center for Arts (http://www.ybca.org/) and appears to be placing large banners on the side of the building to mimic the invitations (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/18/apple-issues-invitations-for-january-27th-media-event/) sent out last week. A reader has sent in this photo of the Yerba Buena center being prepped for the event.
Apple's media event will take place on January 27th at 10 a.m. Pacific time where Apple is expected to unveil their latest "creation". Rumors have pegged the focus of the event to be a new tablet device from Apple.

Are we all going to be disappointed when they reveal nothing more than an iPhone OS update?
Honestly, I don't think they wouldn't let the rumors get to such a fever pitch if they weren't going to release a tablet.

Actually, the ONLY thing I want Apple to talk about is an iPhone OS update, hopefully available ASAP! The tablet is of no interest to me at this time.

"A big week of Apple announcements begins after the closing bell. The market's attention will be focused on the tech bellwether, which is expected to announce first-quarter earnings of $2.07 a share. Apple is also expected to unveil its much rumored tablet computer Wednesday. Its stock was rallying 2.9% higher to $203.50."

It won't happen that way.
Apple would have quashed all of these tablet rumors before they got to this level if there was not going to be a tablet introduction.
The hype feels exactly as it was prior to the first iPhone introduction.

Apple controls the leaks. The packaging, the advertising and everything else has already been done. This stuff is obviously strategic. Hell, you have to train the folks in China how to pack your new stuff in the boxes. It's a huge expensive, logistical process. Really, these things are years in development.
I can't wait. But if a tablet is released, I'm getting the 2nd generation.

While I'm sure the tablet will be quite the device, I really couldn't care less about it. I have a perfectly good MacBook that I'm very happy with. What I'm looking forward to is the announcement of the next iPhone OS - one that hopefully bridges the gap between the current OS and the wonderful things that the jailbreaking community has delivered.

You know when this thing comes everyone will whine about some miniscule detail. As happened with the iphone and lots of other stuff.
Of course. If there's a camera on the back, it was supposed to be on the front for me to buy one... If it's on the front, it's supposed to be on the back... If there's only one, there's supposed to be two... And of course it's nowhere near the number of MegaPixels that's it's supposed to be.
If it's running a (beefed up) version of iPhone OS, it's supposed to be full blown Snow Leopard... If it's running Snow Leopard, it's too slow and should be a version of iPhone OS...
If it uses their tactile feedback screen (as per patent application) they shouldn't have put it in there because that's one more thing that can break too easy. If it doesn't have the tactile feedback screen, it was supposed to...
If it only comes in 64 and 128 Gig SSHD then it's supposed to be available in 8 and 16 to keep prices down. If it only comes in 16 and 32, then I don't want it because it's supposed to be available in 64, 128, and 256.
If it has 3G then it's supposed to be ready for 4G comms. If it has 4G comms then I'm paying for something that I can't use...
Of course there's much more, but you get the idea.
Somehow Apple just can't win on this one.

I'm still amazed that in this day in age, Apple doesn't have a video feed covering these events. And if not a public feed, then at least a broadcast going to their stores so that interested people, press, even apples own retail employees, have some way of seeing this and knowing what's going on.

I'm still amazed that in this day in age, Apple doesn't have a video feed covering these events. And if not a public feed, then at least a broadcast going to their stores so that interested people, press, even apples own retail employees, have some way of seeing this and knowing what's going on.
What a missed PR opportunity. Having to keep up with friggin text updates... it's like getting your news by friggin telegraph.
And the stuff that's available that day could start selling right then and there, after the event (during the music that closes the show).

I'm a total Luddite when it comes to books, I love the paper ones, so at the moment the idea of a tablet from Apple doesn't interest me, though I'm sure it will be nice.
But I am in the market for a MPB in the next two months so a laptop refresh announcement would really make my day!
I'll be following the live coverage.
Who reads books? Anyway, those who do can keep enjoying them - I think the pad is more for newspaper / magazine consumption.
..and enjoy your upcoming i5 ;)

So glad I'll be in the office and not with a client on Wed. **** is going to go down and I'll be one of the millions here on macrumors hanging on every update.
I just bought a new iMac, replacing my iMac from 5 years ago. I'm absolutely astonished by the quality of the user experience in Snow Leopard. And the physical beauty of the computer itself. Using all these gestures on the magic mouse has me enraptured at the thought of breaking the mouse/screen divide and interacting directly with the OS.
Sure, it will be similar to the iPhone - but I think expanding the paradigm introduced with that device (app store, APIs, streamlined content and near infinite software possibilities) to larger, more desktop like formats is going to be an outstanding move forward. If that's in fact what Steve has planned, I can't wait.

the hype on this is unreal. The anticipation of this event overshadowed CES. Apple is pretty much expected to create a brand new market for a brand new product and tell us why we won't be able to live without it.
As it stands, I don't think many people know why they want this product, but they're hoping apple is able to deliver them the reason.

It's a shame they've elected to make this announcement within two weeks of MWSF but didn't feel it could be part of that meeting. If they had, they would have attracted the same reporters, but several thousand fans could been there, too. That would have been a nice nod to some of the company's most loyal customers. You know when this thing comes everyone will whine about some miniscule detail. As happened with the iphone and lots of other stuff.
Of course, thats standard procedure for new Apple products. The iHaters will use it to fuel their fire, and the narcissist Mac fanboys will feel betrayed because of their sense of entitlement that Apple owes them the world.
Any and all innovations in software, design, or user interface will be COMPLETELY voided due to the lack of an SD slot.

In the past, many fake "sneak peek" product photos were claimed to have been taken inside an elevator while being transferred to the booth at MacWorld, for instance. Like a box for a yet-to-be-released computer was opened and low-rez images (phone camera) were taken and then "leaked"...
So the joke here is that there were LOTS of these so-called "elevator photos" and we're waiting for new faked ones of the probably upcoming tablet.

Don't forget that whatever the size is it won't be right..... LOL good one!!! I give you a big hand for writing that one :)

Every Apple media event has been on a Tuesday (unless the prior Monday was a holiday.)
Probably been answered before but an Apple product announcement the day after an earnings call could sway the market. The SEC might have something to say about that.

But I hope it's more than that actually, I wait so many thing from Apple: a ****ing new Iphone OS because it's getting old and obsolete, ****ing new MBPs because they're getting old and obsolete and why not a new iLife and new Iphone but I can wait till the next event for these.

color screen. not new for phone/laptops but would be new for significantly part time media reader device that is highly mobile. (e.g., differentiation on e-readers known to market no and after the great parting of the seas. )
Thinks original BW Mac vs. Color Mac. How color is used the software/applications not so much on the physical packaging.

I am amazed by the hype Apple is able to generate. They want all eyes on them, but the only thing they reveal are statements like:
"Come see our latest creation"
or something like, "we have some exciting new products...starting this week."
People are saying there are a lot of leaks with this product, but I think it has actually been kept under tight control. The little information we know that is correct is hidden by all the misinformation and mere speculation. We are not even sure what it is called...Apple doesn't even give us a name.

You can buy 3D TV as well (http://www.focusedtechnology.com/philips-423d6w0200.html) but it's a little bit more expensive than the usual Apple crap (using your terminology)
;)
Again: "Call me when you meet someone who owns a pico-projector and a 3-D TV."
yeah, thought so.

What makes the stuff shown at CES "crap"?
I thought some of the stuff shown at CES was good. It is a consumer electronics show after all and getting a glimpse of future tech is interesting.
Are we labelling CES crap because it lacks an Apple logo?

There were a few interesting things, but a lot of it is vaporware, and the rest is not particularly inspiring (I haven't seen much of a clamor for anything in particular that was presented there. 3D TV seemed to get the most buzz, but it will be a long while before that is a factor in most people's lives).

just one simple example of an iPhone app that'd be even better on a tablet: ColorSplash. Check it out. It works fine on the phone, but it'd be a superb app for doing what it does, on a bigger device.
What's the iPhone app YOU'd most like to see adapted for the tablet?
Spawn Illuminati! That would be epic on a larger screen.

An EPIC massive form of doodle jump. SOOOO many platforms.
i'm not sure if that was meant as a joke but I think a lot of games would resize nicely
my friends are hooked on Words with Friends and would love to see a bigger board and playing more than 2 people in a game.
i would add any of the drawing apps would be nice with a bigger canvas. plus of course safari and email.
Here - let me show you 4 tablets - that's like 4 times the wow factor..
"This is uh sort of uh a prototype, of a coming uh HP slate PC, which will be here later this year...later this year..."
unlike Apple who doesn't announce without a date. even if just the month. So it will be "this is the apple tablet. see what it does. the price will be. and it's coming out in March/June/July/Whenever". I know there are rumors about IT already being in full production which doesn't shock me at all. They would want at least a nice month to stock pile units and give apps folks time to get updates done. In fact, given the givens I still think we are looking at more like late March or as late as May to build up stock and content. But I don't think they will run it over a new iphone cause that would be murder on the retail folks. Unless the tablet is like the first phone, buy it and go (no set up cause it will be at home and/or the 3g is optional).

Is that place smaller than some of the other places they made similar announcements? This is the same place that Phil Schiller did the September event right?
Whatever. It's going to be madhouse come tomorrow morning though.
