Found it circulating on the Thinksecret messageboard. Apparently it was on Apple's French site as a pop up for a short amount of time.

Oh ... my ... word. What is all the hype about surrounding that one ad? By definition, the PowerMac G5 is a supercomputer, because it performs 1 gigaflop or more. Same goes for every Apple product with a G4 in it. The expected G5 iMac is no different. Have people forgotten that the Big Mac isn't the only way to build a supercomputer?
Of course, I'll be in class during yet another Apple expo.

I think you're missing the point. I think the key part in the ad was on "on your desk", as if a wall-mounted imac or some sort of portable machine was going to be announced.

Ah yes, one of these "before and after" series posters - one version before the announcement, then a second version with the black space filled in for the second version.
Hmm, so what's after as super computer on your desk? A supercomputer on your wall, in other words a mountable G5 iMac? Although the whole "monitor with the hardware and guts in the back" model for a wall-mounted iMac is intriguing, I just don't see it happening with the current G5 heat issues. If they can do this for the G5 iMac, then they can make G5 PowerBooks - and we all know they can't do that and won't be able to for quite some time yet.
Guess we'll all find out in a few days!

I agree, I think it's all about saving space. Apple initially did it with the first new iMac and it's all-in-one design, and then took it to the next level with the current generation of iMac. My guess is the G5 iMac is going to be progressive in this respect as well, although Apple engineers must have had a hard time balancing the space-saving aspects with the G5 cooling issues. Ah well, that's what they get paid the big bucks for...

actually, the definition of a supercomputer has changed. Remember the G4 ad with the tanks? Well, that ad was so good because it was technically correct - the G4 was a supercomputer, and supercomputers can't be exported by law. So to get around that, and keep up with modern times, the government changed the definition of a supercomputer to something much more powerful. :)

I can never tell whether or not people are being sarcastic....
anyways, it seems to me that there's essentially no chance of G5 powerbooks coming out now, as NO ONE (as far as I know) has heard even the vaguest rumors of them. I mean, the most recent thing I can remember is an apple representative saying that G5 powerbooks weren't coming any time soon.

Let me remind you that rumour sites tend to focus on the obvious (eg. G5 iMacs) and often miss new products from Apple. The most recent example is the Airport Express, which was not mentioned by any rumour site before it was officially announced.
Apple representatives say a lot of things because they want you to buy their current products, not something that might come out in a few months. G5 PowerBooks could come out now if the circumstances are right; the availability of IBM processors is a major stumbling block for all G5-based products.
Last but not least, I was not being sarcastic. I do not know why you would think that. It sounds a bit paranoid to me.

View post #68 and on. Pretty much confirms the next rev of pbook is G5. It is just a matter of when will they show it. The logical time is Paris. By MWSF 10.3.6 has to be out. Unless apple has problems(like imac G5) and delays it or apple is pulling our legs with this Pbook 7,1 and 7,2 with the MacRISC4 architecture.

I'd like to think so, but it's only been a few months since Joswiak made his "some time" comment about the PBG5. The most troubling part of what he had to say was when he "pointed out that it had taken at least two years for the G4 chip to make it from the desktop to the notebook."
While the poster suggests a supercomputer (on the go), I have doubts.
And on the Airport Express deal, that was almost out of the blue (not as much as the 12" and 17" PowerBooks at MWSF '03) but remember that there had been quite a few rumors about Apple doing more stuff with "wireless" and some type of new device. Admittedly, nothing about iTunes or music, but there were vague hints.

People are reading too much into those machine IDs. We all know that the PB G5 will debut sooner or later. But not yet! The existence of those machine IDs only means that Apple is working on a new PB series which might or might not feature a G5. Regardless of the CPU, they have to test new computers and therefore need to run the OS on those machines thus the support for those new PBs in 10.3.5. Even if the new PBs were announced at Paris Expo, I'm pretty sure they would run a more recent build of 10.3.5. Secondly, due to the yield problems IBM is still having, it wouldn't make sense to release an iMac G5 and PB G5 at the same time. This would only result in a huge desaster for Apple. Demand for those new products would be so incredibly high that Apple could sell only small quantities of iMacs, PBs, Xserves and PMs resulting in an enormous back-log. In a nutshell, regardless of the heat problems, we won't see a PB G5 for some time. After all, the current line-up is still selling well, so Apple is no rush to release a PB G5 just for the sake of it.

You're definitely right. And your PB will still be essentially the best even when the next PB revision comes, since the next revision will see a speed bump to the G4 with marginal other upgrades, I'm predicting. This is assuming Apple doesn't wait an entire year to update the line.
Your laptop shouldn't seem "outdated" (even that's a strong term to use!) until next year when the G5 PowerBooks are announced...

This add makes me wonder about a G5 powerbook and heres why. If you look at the wording of the add it obviously implies a supercomputer some other then your desk, duh. So unless their will be a G5 newton it has to be a powerbook or a wall-mount iMac. But think of how unpractical a wall mount iMac would be. First you would need to drill some kind of hole in the wall not a plus on easy consumer set up. Second do you really want your $1500 computer hanging by a nail. What if you live in a condo and can't put holes in the wall. And unless your willing to get rid of your computer desk you are gonna have a long reach to plug in you usb/firewire device. Reaching out to clean the screen is not going to be easy either. Plus you have to have an optical drive another hard to reach item. Also by putting it on the wall you lose the some what ease of movement that iMacs are know for. Now they could always expect you put it some where other then your current table/desk or put the guts on your desk but then your back to a 2 pice computer. Simple not simple. I am sure their will be no wall mountable iMac. So what else could be a supercomputer but not on the desk I guess we will see on tuesday...

It says "A supercomputer on your desk...next? Apple Expo Paris"
So the whole poster meaning is "Wow...Apple is the company that created the PowerMac G5...boy, isn't that cool? What will they do NEXT? Guess I'll have to go to the Apple Expo Paris to find out."
The poster doesn't imply anything except that Apple creates cool stuff and Paris Expo is the place to be to see what's next. Anyone reading anything into it beyond that simple explanation is just over-thinking. :)

I disagree. The picture says, 'Super Computer on your desk'. 'Next', to me says that something, such as another "super computer", and now it (the other "super computer") will have a different location (lap?, wall?,etc) in contrast to a desk; such as update Powerbooks or something. Not saying that what gonna happen, but thats how I read the ad. :D

Firstly, the "Oh, just one more thing..... " PBG5!!! thing has been used only by one person, Steve and only Steve. Schiller won't have the verve to use that if he wants to keep his job (no pun intended)
Secondly, we have almost been promised by Apple that there will be no PowerBook update. I have to say that Paris will be an eventful activity for all, and with the few Aussies here, will have the best time, deciding between the news and this site.

I'm guessing this new G5 imac will give us a rough idea as to how long we will wait to get a new G5PB. If they managed to put it in a very constraint area without causing too much heat build up, then perhaps, we will see G5 in the next PB update.
Personally, I do not mind if they decide to let G4 remain in laptops as long as they can increase the bus speed and improve its performance overall. It would be better overall since both laptops and desktops have different technical considerations. Just like pentium has its mobility version, G5 and G4 can goes in different routes.

I think we've been driven into mass speculation because of the poster's wording:
"A supercomputer on your desk"
If Apple just wanted to remind people (as you mentioned), "Wow...Apple is the company that created the PowerMac G5," the poster might have read something like,
"A 64-bit supercomputer"
The fact that they were specific to say on your desk, I think, has us all riled up.

That, uh, looks pretty damn cool. But if they can put a g5 in there...
You guys finish the rest.
Not gonna happen. It's always nice to think positively, but it's better to think realistic than positive in many cases. This would be one of them.
Let's just be happy the G5 iMacs are just around the corner and come to the realization that there will be no G5 PowerBooks until next year.
~Shard~, you really hope G5 Powerbooks aren't announced, don't you? Because if they are, you're gonna see a whole thread of ~Shard~ quotes about no G5 PB until 2090 followed by a million MacRumors members saying, "I told you so."
Of course, you're rebuttal would be, "Yeah, but when are they going to ship?" ;)

About this whole "teh G5 is teh 1337!!1" thing, if I had the choice between two PB's one wich uses an e600( a dualcore CPU with an on board DDR/DDR2 memory controller, RIO bus, integrated GigE, running cool) and one using a 2Ghz 970FX I'd choose the e600 PowerBook any day of the week. Infact if there was a choice between those two in a Power Mac (one with one e600 and one with two G5's at the same clock), I'd propably choose the one with the e600. A 64bit CPU doesn't do anything for me, I wouldn't put over 4GBs of RAM in it anyways. I have no use for it.

Ah, you know me too well, Squire. Nah, I'm a man, if I end up being wrong I'll be the first to admit it, and would actually take all the ridicule in good spirits - God knows I've dished out more than my fair share of cutting remarks.
And 2090 might be pushing it just a little - I think I'll still hold by my prediction for next year... ;)

How about, "Until Regina gets named host city of the olympics"?

That looks quite amazing. I'm hoping the iMac G5's base would have to be quite sturdy if that design was used and it should have some silver/chromr accents to match the PowerMacs, displays and PowerBook.

Thank God the speculation will be over tomorrow. There's absolutely nothing in the banner which suggests a supercomputer elsewhere, btw. The message of the banner is essentially "We did something cool before - guess what we're going to do next?"
"Theater in your hand"?
"Mouse with more than one button"?
Anything vaguely cool would finish the banner just fine.

Mouse with more than one button? Now THAT'S innovation!

Yikes, like that'll ever happen! How about this - when Regina gets the Olympics I'll quit using Macs forever.
