Windows 7 Mobile Also Doesn’t Have Flash

Not surprising since MS is pushing their silverlight platform instead. Either way I do think it helps apple since there's now two platforms that won't have flash.

It's a bummer not having flash on a cell phone, but I'll live. Every modern smartphone (iPhone included, since some people seem to think it's not a smartphone ) has some great features, and some significant drawbacks. Flash is one they almost all seem to share right now.

Yeah, and they have dropped multi-tasking as well. I think there's a word behind all this: performance. Flash crashes browsers. On a PC you can sorta handle it, just press a button to restart the app and hope all your work has been saved. On a mobile device it's much harder to find your way around when things don't work as expected.

yeah and the funny thing which im not surpised by is that the trolls over engadget or any other sites love the phone

All the article is reporting is the lack of flash initially. The reporter is drawing his own conclusion by stating he has his doubts it'll ever come.

Exactly. Microsoft even said they're working with Adobe. From other articles:

"Microsoft and Adobe are working closely together," a spokesperson from Adobe wrote in a Feb. 15 e-mail to eWEEK.

"While the newest version of Windows Phone won’t support Flash at initial availability, both companies are working to include a browser plug-in for the full Flash player in future versions of Windows Phone. More details will be shared at Microsoft MIX next month."

"we have no objection to Adobe Flash support," Ballmer said during the conference, perhaps a dig at Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his reported refusal to allow Flash onto the iPad tablet PC.

As for Silverlight, reportedly it'll be available as one way to write WP7 apps.

I love that after years of Flash being extra-super-duper-horrible on Macs (particularly PPC), Apple seems to be getting the last laugh. If Adobe/Macromedia had made Flash on par with PC's on PPC's to begin with, maybe this wouldn't have happened. Now, as Apple grows in popularity, it's becoming more commonly accepted that Flash is garbage, when it's actually pretty darn solid on Windows.

To me it means welcome HTML 5. (we can be controlled by proprietary technology for long)

For those unable to read - let me repeat a quote from the orig. link

It can go either way. Adobe apparently hasn't been eager to clear up any misunderstandings about Flash on Apple products - all they do is get snippy about Apple. Flash is a major plugin, and a company like Apple has reasons for the decisions it makes. Adobe hasn't mentioned anything about updates to Flash to make it more mobile friendly or portable. So if nothing comes of these "talks" with Microsoft it wouldn't be surprising. HTML5 is the way of the future, period. Also, Microsoft is keen to have a wider adoption, wider use and subsequently a more lucrative Silverlight. Many already prefer developing in this as opposed to Flash.

On the other hand, HTML5 isn't even official yet, that's what, two or three years off? Silverlight market share also isn't quite what Flash is (not to mention brand ubiquity, this early in the game) So in the meantime it may be conducive to include Flash at some point, soon after release (six months or so).

It's a moot point, though, really. If it doesn't have Flash people will buy it and use it anyway. While WinMo is a relatively small percentage (compared to iPhone OS, BlackBerry and Android) of the mobile market it's still big chunk of people/users from a big company. This will increase with the aggressive ad campaign they'll launch to promote it, which always win a few over. Lack of Flash hasn't stopped the iPhone, and apparently hasn't knocked the iPad all that much either by estimated pre-orders. And if WinMo7 works like what it looks like so far it'll be really slick and nice to use and people will buy it on word-of-mouth. If it does have Flash people will buy it anyway, and tout how much much they love Flash on their smartphone.

It's a moot point because Flash will not be on a mobile Apple device unless a miracle happens - which won't prevent them from being popular - and Flash is already showing up on Android, which also won't necessarily make it that much more popular.

Honestly the whole obsession with watching videos on tiny mobile screens is frankly amusing to me. BTW, not having Flash does not stop you from watching other streaming video or video attachments(by far the most valuable feature).

Did anyone else (other than maflynn) think that this may be a move by Microsoft because they want sites to use Silverlight?
