View Full Version : Tuesday: D-Day or Just another Buzz-kill!

With all the buzz and rumors surrounding Intel's release of hexacore processors and the possibility of a Mac Pro update tomorrow, Tuesday, March 16th, it's your turn to express whether or not you think an update to the Mac Pro line will happen tomorrow. I personally would be happy and welcome an update tomorrow but am somewhat skeptical.

I can't envision any reason to delay the MP now that Gulftown has been released and already showing up in some other retail PC's. the ironic thing is I've been waiting for a new MBP update, but have kinda talked myself into going with my first MP if they're updated tomorrow, and just making due with my old notebook for a while, as I seem to be traveling less and less for work anyway.

That's true and given Apple's good relation with Intel, we should expect an update real soon. After all, they've ALMOST always received intel chips a month or so in advance of PC vendors. Can't wait to see what GPU options the new Mac Pros will offer (whenever they're released).

It is wishful thinking. There is no evidence that they will be announced tomorrow. Just circumstance in the NDA being lifted and product release on a Tuesday. Perfectly possible they could be announced, but it should be kept in mind that Apple may choose to wait or they may not be ready for a release yet.

Just to clarify:
If any update will take place tomorrow for the Mac Pro or any other product the Apple Store should go down at around 6:00AM Eastern (US and Canada) Time. Until then, it's fingers crossed. :D
The poll is looking interesting...very close!

I will tell you why it definitely won't happen:
Because I want to buy one! Every Tuesday I get excited and spend my day refreshing Twitter, MacRumors and the Apple Store and the update just never comes. Every Tuesday I am exponentially less disappointed by the lack of announcement because I have started to accept the fact that they will NEVER update the MacPro ;)
Looks like I will be shovelling coal into the steam engine of my G5 for a while yet...

Well I am not sure if this is credible, but I was visiting San Fran this weekend. Totally drunk out of my mind at 1:30am Friday night I ran into 2 guys who were helping me with directions back to my hotel. They totally pointed me in the right direction and I was very appreciative (some homeless guy gave me wrong directions).
One of the guys happened to work for Apple. I then told him how I am dying to get a new 6 core machine when it is released. I told him I really hope it comes out this Tuesday. He said nothing and just smiled. After more small talk we split off in different directions.
But before he took off, the last thing he said was "Enjoy your new Mac." So does that mean it comes out tomorrow? Who knows.. But I can only hope..

Ooohh...my turn...
So today I was out getting some coffee at Starbucks, vanilla latte, and I took a seat with my MPB. There was a guy sitting next to me and to my amazement it looked like he had an iPad. So I of course had to bug him about it so I asked him. He was like "yeah, they sent a few of these out for some field testing." He had the 3G version too. He said he's been going around to common wifi and surfing spots to see how well the iPad works, both the wifi and 3G capabilities. I asked him if I could try it out. He wouldn't let me, said he wasn't allowed to let anyone else use it. We chatted a little bit about it and other Mac stuff. On a whim I asked him about the MacPros and how they are supposed to come out tomorrow. He laughed and said "Check this out." He went to apple.com on the iPad and then manually typed in an address on the apple site and a "New Mac Pro" page opened up. He said that they update the online store a few days in advance so it can be checked for errors, you just need to know where to go. He also aparently does that too. So what I was looking at was the page that will go up tomorrow. I got really excited! I don't remember too much, he didn't leave it up long but I remember seeing the words "Twelve Cores" in big letters. and it looked like the case was a little different with some black in the casing. I also remember seeing FW3200, USB3, eSATA and Lightpeak in the specs. Oh and big surprise! BLURAY!!! Also on the page were 2 new ACDs 30" and 46"!!! He smiled as I giggled and then turned off the iPad. He said "Nice talking to you." and got up and left. So I'm really exctited!!! Can't wait till tomorrow!!:)

I'd have called BS on the guy (would have been a fake page).
Off the top of my head, LightPeak would be impossible, as the parts aren't out yet. Evaluation boards yes. But finished parts in the supply chain = NO.
USB 3.0 is possible, as there'd only be a driver involved (NEC already has their chips available).
eSATA = doable, again, as only the part would need to be added on the board and drivers written.
FW3200 (S3200) = parts not available yet from what I've seen.
BluRay = technically possible, and Apple only really needs to agree with licensing terms and add the necessary bits to OS X (HDCP compliance has already been sneaking into more recent gear from Apple, whether by design or not - component makers have been including the hardware functions in their more recent parts).

This is what my thoughts are today: there's simply NO WAY that they would take the Store down while the iPad pre-orders are in their first week.
As such, its either a "silent" update, or it will be later ... possibly 3/30, being that that is right before the iPad's 3 April big day.

All I've seen is the following blurb:
Embedded, Gulftown, and new Macs
In addition to the 5600 series, Intel is also offering a number of "embedded" Xeon parts—i.e., parts with extended lifecycle support that are intended to go into high-performance appliance-type applications.
The Core i7-980X Extreme Edition, codenamed Gulftown, is also launching today. Gulftown was previewed at this past GDC, and it will definitely make some gamers very happy. It should also delight Mac Pro users, who've been waiting a year for Apple's towers to be updated. Gulftown will go into the single-socket Mac Pro, and two six-core 5600 parts will go into the two-socket towers, brining the core count up to 12 in Apple's highest-end machine.

"With such choice, Apple has plenty of choice to update its current Mac Pro, giving Cupertino the opportunity to offer a large range of Mac Pro, from 4 core unit (single Xeon) to 12 core unit (dual hexacore Xeon). So far, Apple only used CPU with a TDP of 95 W for Mac Pro featuring dual CPUs, so it would mean that the fastest Xeon (2xhexacore) to be found in future Mac Pro would be clocked at 2.93 GHz. However, if Apple can find a way to manage a TDP of 130 W, we would then get either dual hexacore at 3.33 GHz or dual quad core at 3.43 GHz. Despite the entry level model, all Xeon supports TurboBoost, giving access to on-the-fly overclocking for mono-threaded tasks"

This is really getting annoying. I don't think there is a "Pro" user in the world that doesn't anticipate the next model at this point. Apple needs to just announce its plans one way or the other. I'd think they want to get new hardware out the door before the quarter ends, but that's just a couple weeks away.

Well today was the final day for us. We've been waiting to order a Mac Pro for our main editing computer since December 15th. As Steve starts catering to the low cost consumer electronics, the people that kept the company afloat for the last 20 years buying the Mac lines are, at best, going to be second class citizens now in Apple's eye, and at worst, they eventually just stop competing in the conventional desktop/laptop market and do away with the entire MP/MBP lines and stick with their iPhones, iPads, iPods, iJunk...
I think this is the first wake up call.

I just wish Steve would tell me it's over, instead of leaving me twisting in the wind wondering if he's ever going to call. :(

Nothing will come. While everybody else is delivering new machines Apple Consumer Electronic is busy with the giant iPhone minus camera and minus phone functionality aka ifemale hygiene article... I gave up being hopeful for a new MBA, there is no chatter (rumors) in the web what so ever - so maybe at the WDC in Summer. Of course, this being Apple Consumer Electronics this might well be only for the new iPhone so we can wait a bit longer. Maybe skipping this generation of chips totally... Who wants computers any more. It is (gasp) the (wow) i P A D

Quite frankly, the only thing that is keeping me here right now is the OS. You can order up a Gulftown PC today from a few vendors.

Because a processor release doesn't mean a company is ready to ship. Today was complete speculation. While they were expected at WWDC in August 2006, the 2007, 2008 and 2009 releases were out of the blue in a sense. If they announce something well before they can ship they kill sales of older systems. They may even wait until the end of the quarter in the hopes older systems will be purchased to use up budgets that need to be spent. No one is shipping systems with Xeon 5600 processors today, Dell said servers available to order next week so workstations will probably follow a few weeks later.

Because a processor release doesn't mean a company is ready to ship.
"We've already shipped hundreds of thousands of these (processors). We build up the supply chain (beforehand)," said Boyd Davis, general manager for Server Platforms Group Marketing at Intel. Prices for the 6-core processors range from $999 for the Core i7 980 to $1,663 for the Xeon 5680.

That doesn't mean companies are ready to start selling new systems, as evidenced by the fact they aren't today. Be it supply, integration or because they have surplus they want to push a little while longer.

HP has one (980X 6 core) you can config and order today with a march 30 ship date, so it should be soon in any case. Apple obviously marches to it's own drummer and does things when they are good and ready, so it's anyone's guess when they will pop.

Apple already had its great announcment this month. Next month will be a new product announcement. Gotta keep the share holders happy. Unless apple can come out with a new mac pro that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I'll be building one instead. I'll miss OS X but its not the end of the world. Linux has allot of programs that can replace mac or winbloze software!

I think they are waiting for Ipad to sell. If I where releasing a product as useless as the Ipad. I would want keep my customers focused on The Icrap....ooops sorry, the Ipad. The end of Q1 is April 30. I think we will see something before then, Or a couple days after.

Maybe Apple is dropping out of the workstation segment and pursuing products that sell better, and generate more revenue.
Very unlike Apple to postpone their pro product like this.

In 2006, 2007 and 2008Mac Pros came long after the processor changes.

…except for the fact that it's not. The last Mac Pro update took 15 months.

Whilst I agree, I think Apple are on borrowed time with delaying this... I'm at a point where I'll consider the older models and not bother with the newer one or buying a Windoze box.

Unlikely. I doubt Apple are in any rush.

This could be an option as I don't see Apple waiting past April to update the Mac Pro when PC companies like HP will be shipping Gulftown systems by as early as March 30th. Usually Apple is the first to push out new Xeon systems when new chips are released. Come on Apple don't disappoint us any more!

Thats what all us Logic users thought six months ago but we still got Logic 9.
It is highly unlikely apple has a huge market in the Audio world (im sure in the video world too.) They will keep making Mac Pros trust me. It would be stupid not to capitalize on such a loyal niche clients (Audio, Video, and Graphic Artists). What would logic and final cut users do. If Logic and Final Cut go away then I would Worry.

Like you said, a March 30th ship date, which is not today. And like Umbongo said before, when companies are ready to sell.
Also note, whenever Apple does decide to unveil their new lineup, shipping time is usually is within 24 hours, so if they decide to release new Mac Pros next Tuesday, that could still beat out HP's delivery window.

I'm starting to think they may be waiting to release the MBP's and the MP together to get more bang for the buck with the announcement. That or maybe Since march 30th seems to be the HP ship/build date, maybe the chips just weren't quite ready and Apple wants them to be ready to ship at launch.

That's what I've thought for a while now. I believe Apple will have a full out pro line up launch, with maybe new ACDs to boot as a big cherry on top :D

Maybe Apple is waiting to reduce their inventory of '09 models. For the last couple weeks, all '09 models were in the refurb store, and today five of the six processor configurations are there.
So, c'mon guys! Buy up those price-reduced '09 models so Apple will roll out the '10 models.
