At the moment a hack like httpmail doesn't seem to exist. However, you have got options like Gmail Status (http://homepage.mac.com/carsten.guenther/GmailStatus/), which will provide you with a menubar update on the status of your account and a short cut to your inbox. gCount (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~natan/gcount/) provides something similar. Not the full mail.app integration you're looking for but still pretty handy nonetheless :)

Except that hotmail is set up to permit downloading messages to outlook/outlook express/entourage. gmail is not, yet. Besides, the web interface with ads probably means no pop access, which would allow you to circumvent the ads. Same reason yahoo now charges for pop access.

email2Pop works for windows, so I know it can be done. I just don't know any for os x.

Well, by that token, Yahoo *used* to charge for 100MB mailboxes. Also, I don't see any ads yet in my Gmail box.

No one but Google knows if they will offer POP or IMAP support, paid or free. Also, I don't see any ads yet in my Gmail box....Just wait until they officially launch Gmail.

Im really confrontational today :D

I've got ads in mine, not too obtrusive so it's not that bad.

Sure--Yahoo might offer it again. And, sure, gmail might not put any ads in. You know, because they like giving stuff away for free.

I think that Google can make it free by placing text ads in the emails themselves above the fold.
