Just wondering what the clock speed of everyone's main Mac is...
MacMaster
Aug 6, 2002, 12:23 AM
My main Mac is a G4 450(see my profile). My family's main Mac is a G4 800.
So I vote for G4 less than 500.

Wish I had one, but if I did it would probably be a G5 equivalent to that of a Dual 1GHz or faster, so that's what I chose.

I have 3 main machines, although the two power macs are current dead but I have just got the money to get them repaired after the power surge. They are:
Powerbook G4 500
Powermac Dual800 + 867
Powermac Dual500 (OC to 533)
All these machines belong to my work par the Powerbook, I had a 667 powerbook but when it fell fowl to the power surge work took it for repair and never gave it me back :) Its now in use in part of the design dept.
For the last week at work I have been using a 2 Dual 1-ghz G4s because there was nobody to work on them because of the CW Games.

You know, the now defunct Quantum hard drive company (absorbed by Maxtor). I have actually had the circuit board on a 6GB Quantum hard drive blow out (literally blew one of the chips on the board) which killed the drive. The drive was still under 3 years old, which doesn't speak very well for reliability. At least that's how I look at it. I have Maxtor drives that are older then 3 years, and still running/spinning strong.

well, apart from on our HP Compaq Digital Raids I have never had a Hard Disk break down (as far as I can remember :)) on any of my macs. The raid seems to not work as well as it could so when the new xServe raids come out we have a CapX to get as many as we need ;)

300Mhz Beige G3 Desktop
Bought in late January of '98 as an end of life deal.
Should have been :
2Mb Vram, Rage Pro, 300Mhz G3 with 1Mb Cache, 64Mb RAM, 6Gb HD, Zip, CD
I thought I'd max out the VRAM, the mac dealer sent me this :
6Mb Vram, Rage II+, 300Mhz G3 with 512K Cache, 64Mb RAM, 6Gb HD, Zip, CD
I've never bought another product through them again and never will after I found out the actual specs of my mac made it some kind of overclocked older model and they'd screwed me out of £1,200 for it.
With everything I've bought for it over the years this is my full setup :
300Mhz G3
192Mb RAM
Audiomedia III card (for Protools LE)
6Gb 5400rpm System Drive
60Gb 7200rpm Storage/Audio Drive on the CD Rom's ATA channel (CD rom wore out 18 months ago)
External 8x8x24 Yamaha SCSI CD writer
56K Pace voice/fax modem (no longer used due to cable modem)
I'm going to add another 192Mb RAM to max it out in a week or so and then get one of the new powerlogix G4 upgrades later in the year unless I can find a used 500Mhz G4 for peanuts.
It's been a good model concidering but I just wish I was given a full a detailed spec of what I was actually getting, then maybe I'd have got one of B & W G3s with a 3rd party mouse and keyboard for about the same price and not be so limited upgrade wise. It doesn't perform too bad for such an old model though.

that would be the second most important mark next to having had quicksilver reach 1 ghz mark (dual 1 ghz g4 powermac)
of course, for me the low end user, i want to see imacs, emacs, and ibooks hit 1 ghz and that may be another full year before all of those reach that point
some people talk about apple hitting 2 ghz, but that is a long way off...perhaps 2004 sometime, but i hope not

my "main" mac will be the superdrive iMac that is shipping now (800MHz), I can certainly say I have had a wide range of speeds over the years:
Olivetti 086=<11MHz
Parkard Bell 286 laptop (a monster)=
Zenith 386=33MHz
Dell 486DX=33MHz
Gateway 2000(remember when it was 2000) 486-DX2=66MHz
Apple LC II 68030=16 MHz
Homebuilt Cyrix 6x86=166MHz+
Homebuilt Pentium=233MHz
iBook=300MHz
iMac DV(ruby is amazing)=450MHz
Dell inspiron celeron=900Mhz
Dell OptiPlex P4=1.4GHz
new iMac=800MHz
The reason I listed all of these is that I still have them and use them so I conclude I have a "main" processor speed of over 4.5GHz (composite if you have not already guessed).

Ok here's exactly what I was trying to do: I saw that AlphaTech said that he had the pre-qs 733 so it had a superdrive. I was just adding another feature that they got rid of with the qs version!

i don't think a dual ghz will be mightily outdated unless apple came out with a dual 1.6 ghz at mwsf in january
as much as i would love to see this, i predict
1 ghz, 1.1 ghz, and dual 1.2 ghz
but this 1.4 to 1.6 stuff is not anything like what i have seen moto supply to apple
by christmas 2003, we will possibly see that 1.6 ghz dual g4 and it will be a monster then and perhaps it will even be a g5 processor
where is everybody getting this august powermac update rumor from> if so then why didn't apple simply announce at mwny and just say they would ship a little late in the end of august?
the mid term ibook surprise was a really cool one when steve jobs debuted the dual usb icebook
maybe apple will amaze us with a super fast tower at the end of august, but i doubt this more than any rumor i have ever heard on macrumors in the last 2+ years

...the first G3's were the fastest Macs on the planet. So, when the G4 came out, I thought - "Damn - I've got to get me one of those Cube-babies".
So, sure enough, that's what I did. And for a time, I was in the "Fastest Mac Alive" club.
Now, it's Boo-Hoo. I'm going to be struggling to play the latest games and to render the latest effects with the latest video editing software if I don't think about upgrading soon.
Then along comes Powerlogix with the 1Ghz chip upgrade for the Cube. Hail to the good people there. Now, when I buy one of these little boxes of candy, I don't have to lose the sexy little shape of my computer, and - for a time - I can reclaim my spot near the top of the "Fastest Mac Alive" club (until the new PowerMacs are released).
Like they say in that movie "Crazy People" with Dudley Moore: "Buy Volvos - they're boxy, but they're good."

a cube at 1 ghz...that is wild and very cool
and somewhere i heard about a 700 mhz g3 powerbook upgrade and that is also very cool
will/does the 1 ghz chip run too hot for the cube?
and though there are upgrades for the old g3 powerbooks, will they have have upgrades for g3 ibooks?
i would love to see an old clamshell ibook running at 600 or 700 mhz...that would be too funny and probably do-able...but who would buy such an upgrade which would cost four hundred?
it makes more sense to get the 1500 dollar 700 mhz icebook with the better video ram and the lighter form factor of 4.9 pounds...man, there i go again talking myself into a new computer
i want a 4.9 pound sub-notebook ibook with a g4 at any speed, or a 512k level two cache g3-fx monster running at an even 1 ghz

I know that the Powerlogix upgrade has a built-in fan on the CPU - and a funky looking heatsink. Check out the website at www.powerlogix.com for some photos. Sonnet also do a 1Ghz upgrade now - with a bigger L3 cache than Powerlogix. Let the upgrade wars begin...
If there's still a problem with heat in the Cube, you can do a fan install. Apple kindly supplied a mounting bracket and power source inside the Cube chassis near the bottom vent, to put a small fan there. A nice person has put a site up on how to install such a wee beastie - www.praxxus.com/cubefan - and points out there is no real noise difference. As with any upgrade option for the Cube, this one is deemed to be MANDATORY - and has been suggested that ALL Cube owners make this upgrade in any case, to lengthen the lifespan of their computer (in saying that, I haven't done it - yet.).

i also didn't notice before, but they have g4 upgrades for g3 powerbooks!
one can make a 1998 era wallstreet powerbook into a lower end g4 laptop and get another two years out of one's machine for just $300 dollars...not bad
that means you can realistically (barely) run versions of os x which is made for g4 altivec...i know high end pro users would most likely just buy a new tibook with its now 32 MB of video RAM and super large capacity hard drives...instead of using a 6 GB hard drive, 66 mhz bus, 192 RAM powerbook g3
the old wallsteet's 192 MB RAM capability would just make it squeak by with its 500 mhz powerlogix g4 upgrade running os x...this means no games or photoshop
assuming that one would carefully care for their four year old wallstreet, the powerlogix upgrade can give another two years making the wallstreet last six years for the consumer level user...to me as a techie, i have never seen any laptop be able to serve that long, but the upgrade chip makes it possible...albeit barely
