ModNote: Yes, yes, the "going naked" threads were funny the first four hundred times after it started with the iPhone and iPod touch. No enough. No more new threads about this topic and the iPad; just use this one. Thank you for your understanding. --mkrishnan

I just took my iPad out of the case and it seems so much lighter. I might take it out if I know I will be on it for awhile.

It seems like without the case it is easier to hold and balance.

Anyone else going completely naked?

I'm gonna go caseless for a while, just went and bought a belkin 10.2 inch net book zipper case for 17 bucks at best buy. It fits perfect

What case are you using?

I have the apple one and find it fine.

Will keep it that way

It's been naked since I took it out of the box and will remain that way. I have yet to find a case that I like. The only time it will go in a "carrying" type bag, will be in a slot inside a leather portfolio I carry for work. I hate the cheesy rubber and pleather cases that just make it more bulky and imo more difficult to handle.

My iPhone 3GS can be a bit "slick" at times, but I've not had it in expect for about a 2 week period testing out a battery case, but simply dislike the bulk and feel of any case.

Naked rules! :P

The only "case" I will put on a handheld device is a skin.

I go naked on my iphone but oddly enough I want a book style case for the iPad. I really like the idea of the stand the incase on offers. Who knows, maybe I'll go naked again or with a really thin feather type case.

I'm using the Apple case which IMO is pretty thin. I don't know how much thinner you could get.

I like the "naked" look and feel, but the easel really makes surfing on the couch, or typing on the desk so much better. Plus it's nice when propping up to watch a video.

I like it without a case but it can be pretty slippery to hold so I'm looking forward to using it with the apple case it's nice and seems to keep the sleek effect of the iPad intact. Around the house I will use it without a case but out and about i will use it with the apple case so it has some protection. To afraid of dropping it outside on the concrete.

The Apple case makes a big difference, I'm planning on keeping it in there pretty much permanently. Easier and safer to hold, more flexible to use (locking angles), and hardly adds any size or weight.

I get my Apple case tomorrow so i will know then. My tumi bag seems like it was made for the iPad and I'm kinda worried that it Will no longer fit with a case.

Fingers crossed.

I ordered a anti glare screen protector on ebay and a full body bestskinsever for a good price. I'll save the screen shield and only install the back.

Ive been using my incase neoprene plus green and love it.

The Apple case weighs mere ounces. It's making me rethink the idea of getting anything any bulkier.

Like Steve said this is a magical device when you hold it in your hands. So I do not plan on ever getting a case for it. If I need to take it somewhere I can slip it in my backpack and be on my way.

I'de be really wary of "going naked". There was a post on PCWorld today about how easily their test unit was damaged just being dropped a short distance onto a carpeted floor. One slip out of your hand onto a hard surface and it could be a write off.

As I was saying: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=890513

I had the incase one that could be propped at three different angles, but it was too bulky so back it went.. Then I tried the Apple case- better but still took away from the experience of holding the iPad.. Back it went.. Finally I got the Belkin Grip Vue.. Works good.. Provides extra grip, protects the back and sides and the iPad still feels sexy...

I would go naked but the second you drop this it's going to be pretty damaged. I'm using the Apple case right now but will probably get a little beefier folio style case eventually.

The convertible is awesome. Snug with a very cool band lock keeping it tight. Multiple positions for typing and viewing. Read the reviews too at the online Apple Store. Heft? Nope. It feels much better and portable. Naked is pretty crazy with this. Grip just isn't there.

Via the iPad.

canceled my order for the apple case because I prefer to use the dock for charging and the keyboard/dock at my desk and I do not want to remove the ipad from the case, just too much hassle. I'm sure it will get some scratches and dings but I got over keeping my gadgets pristine. now, I just use them.

I bought a cheap silicone skin, but decided I actually like using it naked. I think I will buy a sleeve of some kind to keep it safe while transporting, and dust off of it. Well, if I ever put it down to get dust on it ;)

I can't stand cases.

I mean I get their purpose but they completely ruin the device for me. You have this beautiful pice of aluminum and glass and the you go cover it in a bully case...might as well the iPad was made of plastic, you wouldn't know the difference.

I can see it for holding up the device, I could use it for that but I could never use it full time.

I am looking at that Invishield product for the back of the iPad...has anyone ever used one? Is it almost 100% transparent?

sanPietro98

I'm going to keep using it caseless for the foreseeable future. I like the look and feel of the ipad by itself. BUT I do use a sleeve to protect it while I'm actively using it..

I still use my 2G iPhone and it has never had a case on it. Hardly can see a scratch anywhere on it including the chrome pieces. It is either in my pocket with nothing else, in my hand when in use, or in it's dock. The iPad on the other hand I will buy a case. I can see myself setting it down on a hard surface when typing (desk at school or kitchen counter top). The aluminum would get scratched up pretty easily.

I haven't seen a case that I like yet. I'll probably go naked for the next few weeks and see what gets released. I have a Seidio Innocase II for my iPhone and love it, so I'm hoping they come out with an iPad version.

I'll probably get a sleeve for transport. I like the sound of getting a netbook sleeve....

I love the look and feel of this, but I know that scratches will bother me. I used a leather flip case for my first iPhone and took my iPhone out a lot of the time to use it. I did enjoy that. Then, after using a sleeve with my iPhone 3G, I liked just using a rubberized plastic case and not worrying. The flip case worked nicely with the aluminum iPhone, then using my iPhone naked mattered less with the glossy plastic back.

I'd like to go naked, but the convenience of not worrying about permanently scratching the most vulnerable part of the iPad (the back) is a decent trade off. I'm open to replacing my Apple iPad case with a sleeve most of the time, but it also seems like the aluminum could get slippery and easy to drop. This is a particularly fantastic device without anything covering it.

That's what I don't really get though...yes scratches lookmbad, but doesn't a bulky case look way worse? I mean I'd rather see a scratched back vs not seeing the back at all because it's in a case. And really...are you saving it for resale or why are the few scratches so bad?

I think the best solution is one of those invisible shields...still get the nice aesthetics but with scratch resistance.

To answer your question, actually I would like to sell this right before the next model is released. Honestly, an iPad labelled "like new" will go for a nice amount more than an iPad that's all scratched up. An iPad doesn't seem like unlikely case to drop without a bulky case so I don't know. I do plan to take my iPad in and out of Apple's case for at least half of my usage, so I don't think I'll go with a case made to be left on for months. I haven't tried actually using my iPad in the Apple case yet so I'm not sure how easy it will be to put itmin and out constantly.

The case prices on the iPad are Fu///ng ridiculous. The apple case is definitely overpriced but I have yet to see one that beats the functionality. That may change over time if it ends up letting scratches in but so far it is the apple case vs a skin from bestskinsever (cuz I won't pay double or more for the same product from ghost armor or zagg) is to me the only choice.

To jump into the thread here, let me say I plan on doing the same thing and resell it before the 2nd gen. I myself am planning on going naked for the next for weeks, though am hoping not that long...eyeing what cases and screen protectors come out.

Admittedly the feel of the iPad alone is fantastic, but I do not want to risk dropping it, cause i know it will fall at least once and do not want it to break.

Also, I need to be carrying this around and am placing that fact into my choice of case; whichever it may be.

A folio, such as Apple's case, sounds well-suited for you as well. You get the protection of a good sleeve when you throw it into a bag, you can easily keep it in the folio for extra protection if you're going to stand up using the iPad, for example. Then, whenever you feel comfortable that you won't drop it, just take it out and throw the folio aside. Plus, you can stand it up to watch videos or use a real keyboard. Not a bad way to start for $40 to protect your $500+ investment.

I like the look and feel of the iPad without the case but since I bring it around with me everyday in my backpack and what not I want to have it in a case to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on the device. I just picked up the Apple designed case today and am very impressed with its versatility. Definetly worth keeping and it adds little bulk in my opinion.

Apr 6, 2010, 02:16 AM
one of the reviews had a line like... this much unprotected glass makes going outside without a case a bit like taunting gravity, poking it in the eye.

I agreed and just felt too nervous to carry it around unprotected. I got the Apple case and love it. It is very light, thin and the built-in stand thing is a god send. It makes using it on my lap easier, putting it at just the right angle to type on.

So I say, put some Apple clothes on that nekkid iPad.

Agree! All the brand name ones are very pricy. There are many cheap no-name rubber/silicon iPad cases on Ebay, however.

Yeah, I'm on the fence with the Apple brand case

Nevertheless i'm limited to what Best Buy sells as i'm an employee and get ridiculous discounts. I checked with my discount a Belkin iPad leather case thats $60 and can get it for $15, only thing is I really didn't like that one. Plus since the iPad just came out the accessories are still slowly rolling out. I may get a 10inch InCase sleeve for it (as well).

I've seen them and tried 'em and they still take away the looks of the device.

I know for a lot of folks that the trade off in terms of protecting there device is worth it but for me, the look of the device is very important.

And it's not like the devices aren't durable. I had my original launch iphone until recently (upgraded to 3GS) and never had a protective sleeve and it still looked great when I went to trade it in. Although I did make an effort not to put it in a pocket with keys, coins etc...

I use a four foot giant lint free cloth and wrap my iPad four or five times to protect it. I then don my extra large Snuggly blanket I bought on TV to protect my baby from my zipper and buttons. Latex gloves keep prints and grease off the screen, and I have a special room in my house outfitted with an advanced dust filtration system to keep dust specs from appearing under the glass...

So far, mine is still pristine.

Really the only sure way to keep it from getting scratched is to leave it in the box at all times. In fact, if you were to take the plastic off the box, or even if there were just a small hole in the plastic, there would be good chance that a single particle of dust would get into the box, work it's way to the Apple logo (since the logo faces down if the box is upright, gravity will do this [perhaps you should place the box face down]) and scratch the logo.

Really the only sure way to keep *your* iPad from getting scratched is to not buy one in the first place :-)

Naked only...otherwise it loses so much. I had an old pair of jeans and cut them up to make a sleeve for the iPad...used a rear pocket on one side...wifey sewed it up, works fine in my backpack.

If I did that I'd have nothing to wear.

I put a big piece of packing tape on the back to keep off the scratches....

I have never protected any of my apple devices ever. The scratch here and there on the back case is just a fact of life for me and I have always been able to get a good resale value with full disclosure on eBay. With that said I do like the apple ipad case for the perfect angle the stand provides. But I like my iPad naked most of the time.

But if you buy the clear protective covers it doesnt change how it looks?

Not if you get the Belkin case listed here:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/H0985VC/A?fnode=MTc0MjU2Mjc&mco=MTc0MjY4OTI

It's a bit pricey at $50, but it keeps the sleek look of the iPad and still protects it quite well. I bought mine yesterday and am expecting it early next week.

I like this case. Keeps the sleek look of the iPad and gives it some extra grip when you hold it. The naked aluminum is kind of slippery i think.

+1 for this case.

I don't make any efforts to protect it other than using care when laying it down on a flat surface. It's a good thing that the logo is indented a tiny bit, so it doesn't lie flush on the surface.

Take a closer look at that Apple logo OP, it is soft rubber... It is pretty hard to scratch. I carry mine without any case/sleeve/film between home, the office, and a few after work/weekend spots around town. My coffee table has rough slate tiles for a surface and it left what I thought were scratches on the Apple logo, but then i rubbed it, saw it was soft rubber, and the scratches were gone.

Besides, this thing is begging to show some wear and tear, I already have a sticker on the back for a little added character... I welcome the first scratch.

Buy 2 iPads so if the logo gets messed up on the first one you have a fresh one on hand.

Is this the InvisableSHIELD from Zagg? I have Zagg's screen protector on my touch and it's great. I wish I had bought it for the rear because I have several scratches on it. $39.99 for full coverage seems pretty good, esp if it helps keep the "look and feel".

I was worried about it being so slippery when I have it out of its little netbook sleeve so I bought some grippy stuff. The site sells it in strips for laptops so I did this:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/twitpic/photos/large/86929858.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=0ZRYP5X5F6FSMBCCSE82&Expires=1271465231&Signature=NcNLow7knPvycVjoe5YkZPd97gk%3D

The stuff is from a company called egrips. The strips come off and use that same gummy adhesive that you get on credit cards when they're mailed to you. Comes right off when you want it to. The top is silicone and is super grippy. :D

When you walk around with it you can put your fingers on the litter circular grips and when you're using it you can hold one or more of the edge grips. When it's flat on a table you don't have to worry about it sliding around anywhere AND the back won't get scratched up.

It looks a *little* ghetto, I know, but you forget about it pretty damn quick. I was terrified the other day walking around in a parking lot without these things.

edit: now that I'm studying it I may remove 3 of the circles and move one of them to the center of the apple logo. Depends on how it sits on a table top...

For me, that looks *very* ghetto. One of the reasons I love Apple products so much is the hardware design. If I have to make it look like crap to use it, it's just not worth it for me. I would rather see a small scratch or two than 8 huge chunks of dirty grey grip tape...

I have the Apple case for my iPad and i find it is pretty functional and i use it when I'm at work or on the go. It is very easy to hook up to a headrest for trips too!

But, i find that I tend to use my iPad naked as much as i can. The aluminum back and sharp bezels are so sexy to touch. I find myself just staring at it at times too!

That is why I couldn't bring myself to get a case with a cover. I do love the Belkin Grip Vue though, still can see it perfect and feels better to hold IMO.

I'm the same. I much prefer to use it without any case. I'm the same with phones and iPods though. I just don't do cases.

I did however by a case/sleeve to carry it around in when in my bag but it's naked for all the time I'm actually using it.

Ill pretty much only use the case to transport in my bag and to use as a stand. I used my iPhone caseless, but that got scratched/cracked to oblivion. I doubt my iPad will get too scratched since i'm not really going to be putting it in my pocket (XD). Also, Zagg InvisibleShield for the back. The bottom of my MPB is scratched just from putting it on tables.

I think it needs some sort of cover when you're out and about. I mean really who wants to deal with all the stares and gasps, as if they've never seen one before (well at least as nice as this one).

But when you're set to use it, you've got to unsheathe it and let it, let it salute the world in all it's natural glory. Besides, It just doesn't feel the same with all that protection on it.

Agree! All the brand name ones are very pricy. There are many cheap no-name rubber/silicon iPad cases on Ebay, however.

Thanks.

I am so torn on this one. I normally prefer all devices naked. I think a lot of work went into the design (particularly Apple products) and I love them in their natural form. My iPhone is two years old and has never seen a case. It's a little scratched on the back but that's okay with me. The iPad on the other hand has presented me with a challenge. I love the way it looks au naturale, but I find it hard to pick up and carry. For instance, when it's in my work bag, I have to grab such a large portion of the screen to pick it up, leaving fingerprints galore and it feels like it may slip from my hand.

Based on the comments here, I think my plan it to get the Apple case for transport or for when I need stability and take it out as often as I can. (sounds like that gets easier over time).

Sometimes I use the iPad at home without a case, simply propping her on the book stand I bought at Office Depot, or on the minimal stand I bought at Michael's......at other times I slip her into her iPad case and use that, especially if I'm going out on my deck. If I would rather use the Belkin clear back thingy, I'll put that on her instead. Definitely when I am going outside the house, carrying my iPad somewhere, she goes protected, either in one of the already-mentioned cases or in the InCase sleeve that I bought. Much depends upon the bag in which I'll be carrying her, though, as my smaller bags will work fine with the Belkin or the Apple iPad case but not the bulkier InCase sleeve. I have a couple of messenger bags and a couple of smaller bags which work well for carrying my iPad, and just the other day my Muzetto bag arrived from SF Bags/Waterfield Designs. It's great for carrying the iPad and my BT keyboard, too.

When I can, I prefer to use my iPad "naked," as I love to admire her design and elegance, but speaking practically, most of the time it's a good idea to protect her somehow.

Why is anyone buying zagg when bestskinsever.com is so much cheaper for the same product, and inn my experience a better fit?

1. BSE is the best. And cheaper by 1/2 or more.
2. IS is good too, not as good a fit and more $$.
4. I'd go nekkid before using a BodyGuardz. Tried one my MacBook. Awful.

I used a BSE on my original iPhone and iPhone 3G. Was able to sell the original when the 3G came out for over $200 because it was mint. 3G still looks brand new to this day almost 2 years old, so does my unibody aluminum MacBook at 18 months. BSE is a great product. I only go for the back skin, don't put orange peel on the screen. Get a film protector for that if you feel it is necessary. The orange peel of the BSE is just enough to give you added grip but not enough to be annoying. Keeps my iPhone from slipping out of my hands, same with the MacBook.

I bought the microfiber Apple case. It's sitting on my desk waiting VERY patiently for it's friend to show up (hopefully the 30th). I'm thinking that it's going to be fine as far as protection and handling ability. I'm in the Navy stationed onboard a submarine and there is ABSOLUTELY no way that I am going to carry it around naked on the sub. There is too much stuff that I could accidentally bump into and break/shatter something. And being underwater, there isn't exactly an Apple store I can pull over to and get a new one. :D
