I bought the Belkin Grip Vue (http://store.apple.com/us/product/H0985VC/A?fnode=MTc0MjU2Mjc&mco=MTc0MjY4OTI) and I really like it. Its $50 so its not cheap but I think its the best case currently out for the ipad. It's clear so you can still see the device, the gel is hard enough to protect it very well but soft enough to be comfortable when holding it and it has a slight tacky feel for good grip. I use my netbook case to put it in when I'm going to travel and its a perfect fit, saved me another 50-60 bucks.

yeah I didn't buy the dock and I'm fine with getting a stand and plugging it in with the wire.. but if it doesn't fit in the dock with this case then I doubt it will with any case, its pretty thin to begin with

I like that it's clear, but I wonder if dust will somehow get in between the case and the iPad and then be visible. After a week or so, you should post back and let us know how it looks.....

The HP netbook sleeve is a good option as well. I saw them at Best Buy for $19.99.

So far, I've bought an incase Neoprene Sleeve for a 10.2" Netbook at Target. It was only $12.99... I guess it was on sale because I could have sworn the sign on the shelf said $29.99. The Apple Store is selling the practically the same thing (but with "iPad" on the packaging) for $40.

When I was shopping for a Kindle case, I thought M-Edge cases were really nice looking with great color options and what appears to be top quality material, but wasn't sure about the corner ribbons. The iPad is much heavier than the Kindle and they are still using those ribbons on the corners. It just seems to me that wouldn't be secure and could stretch out over time if any sort of weight is applied.

I too got the official apple case. I wasn't going to, but when I checked it out in the store it really impressed me. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I don't regret my decision at all; it looks really good in person and the tab to prop it up comes in handy all the time. It may not be the most protective, but I'm pretty protective of it myself anyway and it isn't as thick as other cases (one of my biggest pro's).

I use one everyday with the Kindle DX which is just a bit lighter but still hefty.

I don't think this will be an issue.

I think this case looks amazing. I'm a little concerned that the landscape stand could slip and make it fall flat. Nothing to prevent other than the gip of the case on the table. We'll see, i think it's on its way as we speak.

I bought the InCase Neoprene Sleeve Plus because I liked the color and I love my InCase Slider Bamboo case for iPhone. However, I’m sending it back in favor of the Timbuk2 Slingshot Netbook Case.

It’s $35 + shipping on their Web site, but eBags has it for $31 with free shipping.

I have two of Timebuk2’s other products, a messenger bag from like 2003 and backpack from 2006, that I absolutely love. So, I’m expecting big things from the Slingshot.

I roamed over 4 best buys today and all cases are sold out. I did see someone with their official apple iPad case and it does look sturdy but two questions...

Is it iPad "dock able"????

Also..

There's no screen protector on it right?

I'm torn between what cases to get. Just a few hours ago I was gonna get the incase black net book sleeve but decided against it and am gad I did after reading this thread,,,

No and no. However there is a thread on how you can cut an opening at the bottom of the case to allow it to work with the dock.

I have this same case, and I absolutely love it. It's very much like a Switcheasy Vulcan, or a typical gel skin. Not rubber, not hard plastic, not silicone... Flexible, with just enough tack to hold onto it. At $50, it's pricey, but well worth it in my opinion. Couple this with a netbook sleeve to travel, and it's the perfect combo!

I'm Impressed with that case I'm just hoping best buy will carry it. Along with a screen protector and perhaps a net book sleeve as you mentioned and I'll be set........

....though I keep visiting the website that is selling the custom made book cover for the iPad, you know the one where it looks like a real book and you can even put any title you want for the book, can't remember the name now but vie seen the link circulating the forum for the past few weeks.

I generally do not like cases or screen protectors.

I did buy an Apple case for my wife's iPad (which I am using until my 3G arrives). I have mixed feelings. It is one of the thinner and lighter cases but I still dislike the bulk it adds.

I took a quick flight yesterday to CA and back... and I used the iPad both ways without the case at all. I just slipped it into the "file" portion of my backpack. It worked fine.

My wife likes it better with the case. I think I prefer mine naked... but I might pick up some type of sleeve just to keep it in during transport.

Looks better than Apple's offering.

I actually bought that case and am going to return it. It's great for viewing and typing, but it's REALLY thick. If you try to fold the cover back on itself so that you can actually use the iPad in whatever orientation you'd like, either the side with the "stand" stays in "stand" mode (2 inches thick) or if you fold it over on itself, the cover is LONGER than the back of the iPad, so you've got about 2 inches on the opposite side of the iPad.

I really wanted this case to work, but it's way too thick for everyday use. It's a stand case...for your lap or to stand on its own for movies. There's practically NO WAY to use this case in portrait mode comfortably.

I opted for the Apple case. Pleased so far. The iPad is great...it's just hard to use without a case of some sort.

So far, I've bought an incase Neoprene Sleeve for a 10.2" Netbook at Target. It was only $12.99... I guess it was on sale because I could have sworn the sign on the shelf said $29.99. The Apple Store is selling the practically the same thing (but with "iPad" on the packaging) for $40.

x2 - bought this one from the Apple Store for too much money, but its well protected and will travel well.

Anyone have the belkin and a dock?

Does it work or no go?

I laso bought the belkin grip vue but retuning it. It is so hard to remove when I want to use my iPad as a picture frame every night since it is not dockable.

Is it just me or does this photo make it appear as if the iPad pictured is in landscape orientation, meaning the "home" button and connector are along the long edge???

$60 for a neoprene sleeve? You've got to be kidding me.

Thank you. The prices of cases and most other iPad accessories are outrageous. Even the Incase sleeves are ridiculously priced.

Agreed.

Check out places like Target or Walmart for netbook sleeves, they aren't charging the premium that Apple Stores are charging, and the sleeves are pretty much the same (slightly larger).

The incase sleeve that i got for $12.99 at Target is almost an inch longer and 1/2 inch wider than the official one sold at the Apple Store, but I think that's a good thing. When I get a case for the iPad, it will still fit in the sleeve without having to force it in.

My target store had incase net book sleeve for $29.99. The $12.99 sleeve was another company I had never heard of. I looked similar and was probably similar in quality.

You can probably blame the iPad accessory prices on the iPhone/iPods. When I had my iPod Touch, I couldn't believe how much they wanted for a boring plastic case.

Hmmm.... That explains the $12.99 price, but doesn't explain why the incase sleeve i got rang up for that price. I did see that it said $29.99 on the rack- I just figured it was on sale after it showed $12.99 when it was scanned at the cash. I already threw the packaging out.... Maybe a UPC from the cheaper brand somehow ended up on my packaging....

Absolutely. The iPhone/touch accessories pricing set the bar for the iPad.

Anyone know if that belkin case fits the dock, i would not think so but just checking.

I doubt any of the cases will fit the dock. Even the Apple case won't fit the dock.

In order for a cased iPad to fit in the dock, Apple would have had to design the dock with that in mind. The naked iPad fits the dock perfectly/snugly, so it doesn't wobble around while it's sitting in it. If Apple would have allowed space for a case, the iPad, as they designed it, would not fit into their own dock.

iPhones/iPod touches also do not fit into their dock if they have a case on them. If you want to dock a cased iPhone/touch, you have to take the case off.

+1 great case so far.

Thanks for pointing out that so many cases are negatively effecting the design effort apple put into the touch and feel of the iPad. The iPad just feels awesome in your hand!!

I bought the incase slip sleeve plus and am quite happy with it. People have complained about the top flap not covering the entire ipad, but mine does. Additionally, it's pretty easy to get on and off you just have to make sure the back of the ipad is on the side where the slit is. It came with a bendable stand for the ipad but that doesnt seem too stable!

I have this case and it is crap! I shipped mine back to Apple. Maybe I got a bad one, but I wasn't impressed by it. I also purchased the Incase Sleeve Plus and that was is badly made. I have a feeling Incase rushed their product to market just to offer something. Did they even have a prototype of an iPad to test it on? Sure doesn't appear so.

I just purchased the Belkin Grip Swell at Best Buy and really like it. Am just now waiting for the InivsibleShield which they told me should be in stock on friday. I may also just bite the bullet and get an incase sleeve or some other brand. We'll see, most likely I'll take my iPad to the best buy and fit it into each case till one satisfies me.

Edit: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=509996

The back is a bit textured in like waves so you can easily feel that and surprisingly makes holding the iPad easier than just by itself. For me at least. The back aluminum doesn't have much grip. Admittedly, it's really thin too which I both like and dislike. I like it cause it keeps the same form of the iPad, I don't feel like this case added any bulk at all. Though it's so thin I'm not sure if it would provide much protection if it was to fall to the ground.

I bought the the case in the link below at Best Buy because they were out of the hard case that Apple sells. My only complaint is that these neoprene cases offer no protection whatsoever to the iPad. They basically just keep the iPad free from scratches.

I got something (apparently discontinued) that is a cross between this bag (http://www.caselogic.com/e_sling_medium/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=125395) and this bag (http://www.caselogic.com/e_sling_medium/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=125395). But more the size of the first one. Haha, apparently they have rebranded my bag into an iPad bag and removed the flip over magnetic messenger bag style thing. It doesn't have the extra two strips of padding like the large one either, but my medium one does. I got it for $35 at Best Buy. They had one for $25 that is small that seems similar to this one that is a tighter fit. The smaller one (http://www.caselogic.com/e_sling_ipad_case_sm/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=125394) holds the iPad and the bluetooth keyboard (barely--it slightly stretches when you zip closed), but I took it back because I wanted to have enough room to store papers that I get in class (or am bringing to turn in) without folding them up.

I really like my medium sized case as it holds the iPad fine in the Apple case and stores the keyboard without it stretching, along with little extra pockets. The metal mesh pocket is nice for keeping headphones in, it has two pen holders, and nice pockets to store an iPhone snug and keys. Its black with a nice red interior. It is simple but looks nice. As for long-term durability, we'll see.

Case-logic doesn't seem to be the fanciest brand, but it seems to offer nice protection, magnetic latches for the flap, and lots of little pockets: two sections, one for iPad, one for keyboard / papers, two zippered pockets: one external and one internal, two exterior velcro pockets, and five open internal pockets, one of which seems made for an iPhone and a mesh one for headphones, and two elastic pen holders. My only real complaint is that the shoulder strap isn't padded or removable but it is adjustable. Anyone have suggestions for a padded snap on for the strap?

Again, I have this first one, but with extra padding liner and magnetic flap of the second one, which I feel makes it nicer:

I just bought this sleeve. It is actually an inch or more taller than the iPad. The top flap which covers the sleeve opening extends quite below the opening. This makes it kind of difficult to keep the iPad in or take it out fast ; You have to flex it quite a bit at the top.

http://www.newertech.com/products/nuguardclear.php
it was only $25+$2 usps first class shipping
I took pics http://img51.imageshack.us/g/img0072jp.jpg/
The build quality is pretty good and the protection on the back of the ipad is better than any case I've used before. My ipad snapped right into the case and fits very well and is even hard to remove because of how well it fits. The only thing I don't like about it is that there are big gaps in coverage on the sides to allow space for the buttons, speakers etc that are bigger than necessary and there is a slight gap between the plastic case on the back and the aluminum back(I assume to cushion impacts better).. and on the sides in the gap areas your fingers can catch on it a little. Another downside to this and probably all hard plastic covers is that when I'm reading a book in bed with the ipad and holding the ipad up above my face.. the case is so slippery it's hard to hold the ipad in front of your face and your hand gets tired from gripping so hard to avoid slipping.
I am pretty sure this newertech case is a rebranded version of this case:
http://www.handhelditems.com/ipad-crystal-clear-polycarbonate-padshellor-case-clear-p-132382.html $20+$2 shipping
so if you prefer to get the case with no "newertechnology" logo on the back get this one.
From reading this thread I think I'm going to try a gel skin case, probably the cimo one.. which I think is also a rebranded one from handhelditems

Oh the web we weave.

So am I mentioned I'm not too fond of the small 10.2 inch netbook black InCase neoprene sleeve. The iPad still has some wiggle room while it's inside and the thing that scares me the most is that even though the inside feels super slush and soft; in no way would that protect the glass screen on the ipad in case it was ever to fall.

So today I bit the bullet (again) and purchased the Griffin Elan leather case which I do enjoy more than the InCase sleeve, though i do have sone qualms about it as well. Check it out:

http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/elan-passport-ipad

The leather feels great, it doesn't feel like a cheap imitation and for $50 it shouldn't. This case dies offer better protection fir the iPad overall as opposed to the incase sleeve. It essentially has a bit more structure/frame which I enjoy, and it even has 4 little pockets for business card sized things and one big pocket, though still super thin for random papers and whatnot. My dislikes about this case is that in the little straps that hold the iPad itself obstruct access to the "set lock screen" toggle and also to the headphone jack and mic as well. These reasons I just mentioned should be more than enough for me to be upset about this case but in all reality its the best case ive held so far and it something I wouldn't mind carrying around...this case doesn't scream out that you're carrying an iPad..it more so looks like you're carrying around a little notebook or something...like a little note taker.

Anyways, looks like I'll be returning the incase sleeve tomorrow and this will be my iPad case unless something a lot more awesome comes along.

I bought the apple case when i got my iPad. I really like it. I like having the kickstand and the screen protection when i close the lid. I'm kind of surprised that more people don't like it. I have found very few flaws with it. Having the kickstand while i am in classes at college all day make it the perfect case for my usage. I am though looking for a bag to carry it around in while go to and from classes.

I have this case also. It doesn't block the headphone jack on mine. It only blocks the rotation switch (which I can live with I think)

It's odd though, as the on/off switch at the top is covered by the leather strap, but it actually makes it's easier to use. They must have known this as it's an unusual arrangement .Just works out ok.

What I hate is the closing strap. Most people want this but I have a M-edge leather case for my Kindle DX that is almost exactly like the Griffin which doesn't have the strap and it's ifinitly better without it. The strap just sort of flops around when it's open.

I'm definitely going to end up removing it somehow.

It's worse than having a huge dead pixel staring at you :D

I am pretty sure this newertech case is a rebranded version of this case:
http://www.handhelditems.com/ipad-crystal-clear-polycarbonate-padshellor-case-clear-p-132382.html $20+$2 shipping
so if you prefer to get the case with no "newertechnology" logo on the back get this one.
From reading this thread I think I'm going to try a gel skin case, probably the cimo one.. which I think is also a rebranded one from handhelditems

I actually really like the look of http://www.handhelditems.com/ipad-crystal-clear-polycarbonate-padshellor-case-clear-p-132382.html and the way you can bend it...

I was going to make a sleeve for mine out of denim. I slipped it in a leg of old blue jeans and it fit exactly. All I did was sew up one end and leave the hem at the other end, open.

I found all of Marwares new iPad cases on Amazon that are not even listed on Marwares site http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=marware+ipad+case&x=0&y=0

Marware has sent me this case as a review sample - It's a dual layer silicone case http://www.amazon.com/Marware-Sport-Grip-iPad-Black/dp/B003DR4X50/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=office-products&qid=1271043836&sr=8-12

Ilounge has a great gallery of cases.
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/accessories/ipad

I bought the apple one at launch. after a week i love but hate it. The built in stand is great. But I don't like the sharp edge as it's uncomfortable to hold with two hands and try to thumb type in portrait mode. it's also a bit heavy and thick, and hides the beauty of the ipad. I really want to go naked but am afraid of scratching it.

So I bought this http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/speck-pixelshield-for-ipad/ in black. I really like the handle. it's super thin and light and has the added benefit of the interior being lined with slighly fuzzy material that wipes some of the smudges off the screen.

I also just ordered this carbon fiber skin for the back, and it shows the logo which I think is pretty cool. pics look great and it would keep it light, yet save from scratches sliding across the table.

I like the idea of the belkin vue shown by a few folks here. The apple sales person said that apple had their own version that was as good, maybe a little better when i was in the store, but when i went online i couldn't find it. Those that have the Belkin, can you comment on weight and how thin the material is? how clearly can you see through the back?

Lastly I really like this case, I need more pictures though to figure out if I am going to buy it. http://www.myincipio.com/product/IPAD_CASE_IPAD-141 I like that the handles only pop out when you need it and it looks like there's a pocket for my Verizon MiFi, even keeping a cable in there. I was looking for a case that is thin, has a handle, and can keep my mifi in there.

Here's a carbon fiber case for looks that probably isn't practical :) http://droconcepts.com/ipad/carbon-fiber-ipad-case.html

and yes, i've spent countless hours researching cases online and in store.

I really like the speck one so far. anyone know of a flat portable stand? The incase gels come with a flexible stand that props it up. i'd love to buy just that.

I like my Apple case. I bought it to use in the interim until I found something better but I like it well enough that I haven't bothered shopping forma new one.

/Jim

I too prefer it naked I just can't deal with how slippery the unit is , it's uncomfortable holding it naked for that reason, I read alot of Comics and I'm just afraid i'm gonna drop the thing. So it's the Apple Case for now.

I just posted this in another thread, but it's worth posting here:

I just bought the Incipio Dermashot for iPad. It just became available for pre-order tonight on Amazon for $19.99. Get 'em while they're hot. BTW, Incipio themselves is selling them on their site for $34.99. Exact same product (exact same model #).

Also, you can buy it from Incipio through Amazon right now for $34.99. I guess Amazon is waiting on their bulk purchase of them to arrive before they start shipping them. If Amazon is able to sell them for $19.99 and still make a profit, imagine the profit margin at the $34.99 price-point!

Check it:

http://snapcdn-zoovy-2.simplecdn.net/img/incipiodirect/W400-H400-Bffffff/I/ipad_dermashot_black_b_copy.jpg

And no, that's not a window cutout to show the Apple logo. They made the silicone thinner there, which shows the logo.

Here is a link to the iLounge review and more pics of the grey version:

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/incipio-dermashot-for-ipad/

I like how it has the honeycomb cutouts inside to decrease the weight (and probably add protection.... there's a reason bees make their hives in that pattern)

I would guess that it doesn't. There would be a crease in the front cover (like with the Apple case) that would bend to form the wedge-shape.

I picked up a Built NYC neoprene case today at Staples for $15. It is the 10" Netbook sleeve but when I looked it up it is the same exact dimensions as their iPad sleeve (which is marked up $10 of course). It is a snug fit and will work fine for the time being for basic protection around the house or for putting into a larger bag. The zipper is a little large so I'm being careful when putting it in or taking it out. It also serves as a nice soft spot to set the iPad down when I'm not using it for a few minutes.

It seems like the essential problem with many of the flip style cases is if the front cover can fold all the way over, with as small a profile as possible.

I've seen some that look like you'd end up holding the case open as if reading a magazine or newspaper.

If the cover can't fold flat, the case is going to be incredibly awkward during the many landscape/portrait roundtrips during a typical iPad session.

I just received the Macally MetroLpad from Amazon for $24 along with a $12 neoprene case. I've tried many cases already and this is by far my favorite combo. I do recommend the Incase convertible if you must buy at the store. Definitely a great case but expensive and didn't "lock" into place. Kept sliding down. Apple's case had rough edges that bothered me, And the Belkin grip vue was too expensive for what it is.

This macally metrolpad is definitely a winner. I showed it to family and friends and convinced 8 people already to get it!! I use the neoprene case when I throw it in my bag for school, but have traveled without the neoprene case as well. David Pogue was right, this thing is built like a tank as is, and the Macally case just reinforces that notion along with not taking away ANY function or style. Get it!!!!

The one I got has the smaller dimensions. I think they may have rebranded the original netbook sleeve size as the iPad sleeve and are now selling a slightly larger one for netbooks.

The only thing I'd be concerned about is the four corner straps which hold the iPad in place. If they're a little too weak maybe I can try and get a little creative and make a fix for it, if not, I'll just return it. They have a decent selection of cases on the site too.

This case looks nice for $30. I never heard of hdaccessory.com- are they reliable? I wish amazon sold this so I could return easily if cheap. I only wonder if you can open the cover and completely wrap it to the back of the iPad, so you don't have an "open book" all the time.

Please let us know how you like it!

I bought this case today at the fossil store. The leather was so soft and gorgeous and had a beautiful aroma. The case is padded and the ipad fits like a glove without adding a lot of bulk.

http://www.fossil.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?R=22182740&Ntt=ipad&Ntk=FossilSearchEn&langId=-1&storeId=12052&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&N=0&catalogId=10052&productId=22182740
I posted this one on page 2 I guess. I bought the navy and it's true, it's beautiful, leather and not that expensive

Get it!!!!

http://www.macally.com/EN/Product/ArticleShow.asp?ArticleID=317

Can you tell us how thin it is? I'm looking for a thin clear case that doesn't take away from the design of the ipad. thanks!

So I just got my Marware Eco-Vue case and I am TOTALLY loving it!

I'm typing this in my iPad now, using the stand feature intended for typing and i am typing about as fast as I usually do on a regular keyboard. :)

I highly recommend this case, free shipping too!

Super thin. It adds grip cause of the rubberized edges but other than that it feels as I'd there is no case. That's why I love it so much. It feels protected but yet naked still.

The one I got has the smaller dimensions. I think they may have rebranded the original netbook sleeve size as the iPad sleeve and are now selling a slightly larger one for netbooks.

What do you guys think of the SGP skins? I can't tell if it protects the sides as well or just the back.

http://www.sgpstore.com/product_info.php/cPath/23_36/products_id/1322

They look pretty slick for the back. Either the carbon fiber looking one, or the leather for a more professional look. I was thinking about using this in combination with a portfolio type case for when I'm out of the house. Anyone know if it will fit?

The quirky looks like the best portfolio type case with the slim profile similar to the apple case.

Eventually I'll grab a PowerSupport when it becomes available as well.

I actually just got the Carbon Fiber one in the mail today. It looks pretty damn good. but i'm taking my ipad in tomorrow to the apple store, as I have the wifi issue. We'll see what happens.

They mailed it flat in flat cardboard with lots of do not bend stickers. The quality of the skin loks pretty good but i won't know until i apply it.

Ipad fits nicely, and is well protected inside. I like it.

A nail failed to scratch the ipad screen, I dont think you should worry about a business card or a piece of paper.

Maybe it was a bad nail!

But really, thanks as I didn't see a video of said nail on said screen. ;) But thank you. I had wondered because I considered it similar to say my MacBook Air where the oil from my skin would rest on the keys and then closing the lid resulted in the keys hitting the glass. I can't speak to any damage as I had a screen guard (microfiber) within the day, but I was curious about the iPad.

I have a concern about cases. If Apple spent the extra money (and charged us) to use an aluminum case for the iPad it was probably related to heat dissipation. If that is in fact a reason wouldn't a case interfere with proper cooling and effect battery life and processor performance? I am of course not referring to storage but case that stays on.

Surely
Apr 15, 2010, 12:43 PM
^^^^ My iPad never gets hot.... or warm for that matter. I don't think that any of these cases will cause a problem with heat dissipation.

I wouldn't use any case that would allow anything to touch my screen besides soft material.....

Hey sorry for the late reply. I messaged them and they replied yesterday and it was a problem with the site. They fixed it up now I believe. I hope you were able to get your order through.

ipadder, where/how did you get it? Their website is seriously hosed upif you put something in the shopping cart, a white page with a W appears. No way to see if you have it or not. Also no phone number anywhere on their site....same white page appears if you send an email (as noted on their contact page, but still).

Im leaving for Asia in 10 days and am desperate to find a cover that includes a decent kickstand (gonna be watching a few movies during the 20+ hours in flight). Help.

I ordered the MarWare Eco-Vue on Monday. It arrived today. They are out of stock when my friend ordered the same day so they must be selling like hot cakes.

The construction is first rate. Much nicer than the InCase Book Cover I returned to the Apple Store today. It's thin and light - just the way an iPad folio should be. The best feature is the fat leather and elastic strap in the back that lets you secure it in one hand while you walk around and type "10 key adding machine" style with the other hand.

I enjoy the color of that case, but personally am more towards a darker brown. My Griffin Elan Passport looks kinda similar but it has 4 small little straps to hold the iPad, whereas the pics above seem to show that the case adds bulk overall.

I really like that case! I'd rather it be black or dark brown, however.

My main purpose for the iPad is something to carry around for a calendar, appointments, a to-do list and email. I need my case to be functional (i.e. a place for business cards and a few sheets of important paper.

We all have our opinions. im not offended, I like it and I think it looks stylish. Also consider how fragile this thing has been proven to be. A drop on carpeted floor has been proven to cause pixelation. I have huge hands and the iPad feels tiny and very thin to hold. Dont get me wrong, i do take it out every once in a while.

Ah thats what I was wondering. If that sensor works like it does on the Iphone im not going to worry about it. I actually ordered the bag last night but then cancelled after I noticed that it covered the entire bezel. Told him I would wait to see where the sensor was once I got the 3g Ipad. I think that many of these case manufacturers have things backwards. I don't need the back of the iPad protected, I need the front protected. I'm looking for a "case" that is nothing more than a cover for the front that attaches to the side via hinges and unfolds book-fashion as well as fold completely back for handheld tablet mode or partially back to act as a stand.

Are there any covers like that?

Temple Bags has posted a list of recent changes they made to their iPad cases and I just ordered the leather one... I believe the changes addressed all of the concerns expressed here and I love the look and quality of the case... Also, the fact that other users are reporting on their web page that it is very easy to insert and remove the iPad is a plus.

However, since I have ordered a iPad 3G+WiFi from Apple, I am assuming that there are no required changes... the only one I can think of would be associated with interfering with the 3G transmission at the top, but the case's open side design should make this a non-issue... I think?... any thoughts?

Its looks nice but I am just wondering if the case covers the ambient light sensor. I asked him and he said that he did not know if it did or not. He wasn't sure where the sensor was located. The only other thing about the case is the fact that it is upside down when its propped up, not a big deal just seems like top cover should flip from the top and not the bottom. It is a nice case though. Let us know what you think about it when you get it.

Last night while I'm waiting for my 3g iPad, I ordered a Vaja ivolution Top Case from Vaja Cases. The case is customized (as are most Vaja cases) with a black exterior and rosso (red) interior, all in leather.

At $150 plus shipping, it is expensive but I had one made for my iPhone 3g a year and a half ago in Ferrari colors for $110 and everyone I show it to loves it. The workmanship and materials are first rate and it's made in Argentina.

The cover detaches and reattaches at the back when using your iPad.

According to the confirmation e-mail, the "artisans" (as they call them) are hard at work and should complete the work in about 35 days.

Hopefully, the iPad 3g I pre-ordered on March 12th makes it here first.

I also have the Apple iPad Case and although unlike others I really like it (especially the texture and functionality). I still plan to use it occasionally but wanted something really special.

I've spent the last 2 nights on the internet (including here and YouTube) for cases but they all fell short of my needs (poor materials, bulky, poor design, etc).

Can't wait for the 3g iPad or my case.

Last night while I'm waiting for my 3g iPad, I ordered a Vaja ivolution Top Case from Vaja Cases. The case is customized (as are most Vaja cases) with a black exterior and rosso (red) interior, all in leather.

I feel the same way. The Vaja case seems to fit my needs better than any other case that I have seen so far. The only thing that I might be missing is a way to prop it up. I ordered black on black and will post pics as soon as I receive it.

Finally got a chance to play w/ an iPad at my local Apple Store. Actually, I played w/ 2 of them, one in an Apple case and the other w/out case. I have to agree w/ many posts that it feels great "naked" in your hands and that using it in a case just takes something away from the experience. I've decided to go the sleeve route and just ordered the Hard Candy "Hard Sleeve" (link below). Delivery scheduled for 4/22...hopefully just in time for my 32GB 3G. If possible, I'd suggest you try using the iPad in and out of a case before purchasing. You might just be surprised!

Wow...I find this case extremely intriguing. This solves two issues with me:

1) I like the idea of using the iPad "naked"
2) I like the idea of being able to have it in a sleeve even while in use

This seems to solve both as they have those molded corners w/ fingers that hold it in place. I'm gonna look into this one more, but this just moved to the top of my list so far. Thanks for sharing!

Now I just wish Apple would share our 3Gs with us, but we'll get there, right?

Yes many.. Folio style.
Read my post carefully. I'm not looking for a full folio style case. I'm looking for one that has no back.

iSkin will have something like that, Vaja already has it but it's a 2 piece so you will have to buy the whole thing. Check it out.

They certainly did. I'm just glad to finally see a quality case at a more than reasonable price.

Went through 2 iPhones and a lot of dust induced scratches before deciding not to go back to this.

Yes, I've had my eye on that one as well since seeing it on ilounge. $150-$180 is a big expense, though. I would appreciate if you would post your thoughts and pictures when you receive it. I can't tell how thick it is, or how well it will hold up as a stand. But it sho' do look purty. Enjoy!

Unfortunately my iPad is stuck on the wrong side of the Atlantic and will be until this Icelandic volcano stops erupting...

I'll hopefully have the case next week, so can at least give my impressions of it, with or without its eventual contents!

I haven't been concerned with the upside down issue you raise since the iPad's screen flips over automatically, etc... and, also, I tend to not rely on automated light senors and manually set the screen brightness to my liking. Also, I like the fact that it is very easy to insert/remove the iPad (for docking at night) and that the case's cotton bound elastic won't stretch out and thus the case won't lose its shape with time... but I will post my thoughts when I get the case and iPad 3G and have used it for a while.

I ordered the Belkin Grip Vue (clear version) and the Apple iPad case. I'm not sure if I'll keep both and use one for travel and one for home, but I got a netbook sleeve from Best Buy that has a pocket on the front that I can slide the powercord in. I'm thinking the Belkin and that sleeve will be good for travel. If it works around the home and office as well, I'll take back the Apple one.

Both cases look great, and I've seen the Apple one "in action", and the owner said she loved it. We all have different preferences, and that will show in what we select.

Why not? I was thinking of getting these (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/305590/Scotch-Smart-Mailers-5-10-12/?cm_cat=2000000009) and jazzing them up with some stickers or wrapping them in fabric.

I could give some of those Etsy sellers a run for their money :)

This case looks nice for $30. I never heard of hdaccessory.com- are they reliable? I wish amazon sold this so I could return easily if cheap. I only wonder if you can open the cover and completely wrap it to the back of the iPad, so you don't have an "open book" all the time.

Please let us know how you like it!

http://www.hdaccessory.com/images/ipadregalbeige4.jpg

I received this cover today in the mail. The beige color looks exactly like in the pictures. Shipping was from the Los Angeles area and took 1 day to process and 2 days to get here in Northern California. It is built well with a stiff but slightly padded front and back of leather. The flap is held in place with 3 small button magnets sewn inside. The inside covering that touches the iPad is a gray felt material. Also has a strong chemical smell. I am currently letting it air out to try and get rid of the smell. The iPad itself is held in place with two sewn in leather loops on the bottom and the two top retainers are a strong bungee cord type fitting with little leather pads attached. Since I don't have my iPad yet to test the fitting I may try and sneak down to the Apple Store in the Mall and see how it fits in.

Update: The iPads on Display have a locking cable on them that interfered with the insertion of the iPad into the case. Spoke to one of the Apple Geniuses who then pulled out a 16GB iPad that they use for the classes.

The hdaccessory case fits snugly, feels nice and looks very nice. There is about 3 millimeters between the edge of the iPad and the edge of the case, so protection from drops won't protect your iPad if it hit the floor edgewise. Sitting on the floor, I did the shake test several times to see how snug the iPad would stay in the case. Didn't budge, so that was good. [The Genius, however, wasn't too thrilled by this test. :D ]

Adjusting the front lid, you can set the case up in portrait mode by itself. In landscape mode, I flipped the front lid over and it slides on the glass table I used so you would have to use a prop to keep the lid from sliding. There is no tilt function when typing, which is where the Apple case advantage is.

There is a problem with the top bungee type fittings. When in use, the top right bungee covers over the top 1/3 of the on/off button. You can easily click the button and it doesn't seem to interfere with the operations, but it is a point against it. If the bungee was just a bit tighter, the on/off button would remain pressed in all the time. Since the 3G model is just a teeny-weenie bit taller than the Wifi model, there may be a problem. The top left bungee covers 1/2 of the hole for your headphones. I was able to adjust it to the side but the headphone jack has to seat securely into the iPad and the bungee prevents it from doing that. In addition, the microphone hole is now covered.

The strong chemical smell is still there and I am going to let the case sit outside overnight. Hopefully the smell will lessen. As far as returning the item, hdaccessory posts that there is a 20% open box fee on any opened hardware or accessory. Shipping costs are not refundable.

All the Best!

I finally received my Cimo soft gel case. it's terrible. the holes don't quite line up with the buttons/ports and it's not very "soft gel" feeling. it feels like cheap rubber. I definitely prefer the hard plastic back I got from newertechnology

I have the CIMO soft gel case as well and will be replacing it as soon as something else comes out. For me the holes are fine, I just feel it might fall out.

I contacted Cimo about that and they said they will have a program to replace the misaligned cases soon. You should probably be getting an email soon. They were very courteous about it.

I finally got my hands on an Apple iPad case today.

The good and bad of it is

- that it is pretty much exactly what I was looking for -- convertible, protective and slim (the good)

- except that it looks like the Macally bookstand is finally -- same quality and functionality, better design and lower price (the bad)

In my previous post, I was considering to get all leather temple bag, but after the recent change/upgrade by Steve, I just love the canvas army green version slightly over the all leather one (actually I love all 3 colors, but lets be practical :p ). I think my order is going to ship today (thanks Steve!), but it'll take awhile to ground ship to Canada. I'll post my review as well, maybe along side JohnH's all leather version.

Oh as for where the ambient light sensor is located in iPad, checkout step 28 in ifixit (http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad-Teardown/2183/4). The quick answer is, temple bag will be covering the sensor, but it's not an issue for me (same reason as JohnH's). The purpose of the bag for me is so that I can carry my iPad on the go. Will taking the iPad out for home use with SGP's back cover and screen protection, to keep its thin profile.

A reviewer (http://www.amazon.com/iPad-Case/forum/Fx7Q7DA6UR11P/Tx10B9E2DNU6PTP/1/ref=cm_cd_dp_ef_tft_tp?_encoding=UTF8&s=electronics&asin=B0039YP0XQ&store=electronics) on Amazon said that little bumpers to protect the iPad are velcro and can be moved around (or lost).

HardCandy.com has an ipad case out. I got one in black. The picture shows the case is black inside as well as out. It is not. The inside is neon orange. Also, the little bumpers to protect the iPad are velcro and can be moved around (or lost). They don't hold the iPad in place unless the case is closed and zippered. If you pick up the case without it being closed and zipped, the iPad falls out. This is a bad design.

I'll be getting one of those bubbled envelopes as well. That was a clever and cost saving idea. The iPad is already heavy as it is, I definitely don't want to add anymore weight to it, so I just need something to the iPad in when I travel.

By "artisans" they mean starving child laborers ;)

No seriously, their stuff is gorgeous. Wife has had two iPhone cases - original then 3GS. Great materials and workmanship.

Their iPad cases don't fit my usage needs or I'd have one in a heartbeat.
