I thought this was going to be a joke thread. Like, use an office binder clip as an iPad stand. That's kind of cool, though.

Love it!

My dock arrived today but only holds the unit in portrait mode.

I'll stop by Staples on the way home and do some investigative work. :)

Surprisingly it is quite stable. If you are going to use it on a desk (and keep it mostly in one place) you could use some double stick tape under it to keep it positioned on the desk, especially if you plan to type or do something other than watch videos.

The thickness of the iPad fits nicely in the space without feeling like it is going to slip out, plus it is wide enough that it is not going to tip side to side. I don't know about with the Apple case, probably too thick.

If you are worried, guess you could use some scotch double sided tape (the thin style) inside...?

Not really a stand per se like the OP, more of a tilted table.

If you going to want to dock landscape then you're going to want something that's collapsable and easily stored. Anybody seen anything like that yet?

You don't need to order the same business card holder to obtain a cheap iPad stand. As the one the OP mentioned is only available online, I bought one shown below from Office Max for $1.99 which they also sell at every other major office supply store under various brand names, although I've seen the price higher at some of the other office supply stores.

It works amazingly well as is and holds the ipad sturdily during use. You can even take it a step further as I have done and buy a $1-$2 pack of those little adhesive bumpers, if you already don't have any around the house. You can add them to the bottom as well as the backside to make it even sturdier, as well as improve the viewing angle even further to your personal preference.

Thanks OP! Great idea! After I bought one, I found a second one at work in a supply cabinet and now i have one for home and work!

Funny I picked up both the plastic one and that black metal mesh one, and when i tried both at home immediately found the mesh business cardholder was too wide (the opening) for the iPad and the angle was not right. Plus it did not feel that stable... So i carefully took it out and tried the plastic one, and it worked great. Perfect angle and it feels more solid than i expected.

Thanks OP!

potdude

I don't see any issue with the mesh holders that I have being too wide and feel the iPad fits pretty well as is and as for the viewing angle it's good depending on how you are positioned in relation to the iPad.

If you feel the angle and fit aren't well enough for your use, this is where the adhesive bumpers I've used can come into play to change both angle and fit by adding them to the backing of the holder where the iPad rests.

This increases the snugginess of the iPad in the holder and allows you to change the angle however suits you best. However, I'm not done trying business card holder stands and will pick other ones up if I see any in stores that would work.

I'd rather have a bunch of very inexpensive stands that I can use in various places or for various uses than one really expensive one. If anybody else has any other business card holder modding methods, please share them!

My Staples one just came in. Landscape mode works really great, but you probably need to add some sticky stuff on the bottom to prevent sliding if you want to type on it. Portrait mode doesn't really work safely, it's far too top-heavy for my taste and a slight tap will easily send it falling backward. So I'll keep my dock for portrait mode. But as a landscape stand for $1.05 it's a steal! Thanks OP.

I have the best stand for multiple surfaces. It's a foldable ultra lightweight wire stand thats adjustable in just about every way. It's $2.79 on Amazon

I had a few of these for other tablets but the fit with the iPad is very good.

They are cheap and are a very good option (trust me)

I've had dozens of tablets and this stand is the shizzle.

http://www.amazon.com/Three-Display-Stand-Gibson-Holders/dp/B000RL9JHC/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1271197020&sr=8-12

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31YCjSoQuZL._SS500_.jpg

The wire can fold in a variety of positions. It can expand out for uneven surfaces speading the center of gravity to make it stable.

Just a heads up

This is a great idea! I'm going to stop at staples tomarro!

ON A SIDE NOTE: how did this guy figure out this 99 cent solution. No offense but judging by his iMac, MacBook Pro, Bluetooth apple keyboard, iPad, and iPhone (in iPad reflection), it seems he probably would already have an apple iPad dock. :D just sayin..

Anyway, this is smart and easy. Thank you!

Hilarious - I have been using one of these since a couple days after I got my iPad. I like it better than the plate holders - more stable and lower profile.

I also modded an old iPod dock to fit the iPad. It works fine but isn't as stable as I would like. I can fix that but think I will wait to see how I use my iPad. I like that the dock gives me audio line out but I find myself changing from portrait to landscape more than I expected which kind of defeats the purpose. That's why the business card holder is my "dock" of choice so far. I think I may pick up another one or two.

Wonder if these stores are trying to figure out why there is a sudden run on plate, document and business card holders? Don't tell then what it's for or they will double the price soon. ;-)

The 69 cent version was on clearance at my OD. They had a replacement, but i
have no clue how much it was because there was no shelf tag.

So i bought the only one they had. Staples didn't have it.

I keep it tossed in my bag most of the time for the "just in case" moments.
