View Full Version : Any RollerCoaster Tycoon fans? Wouldn't it be perfect on the iPad?

I've been thinking ever since I got my iPad how amazing it'd be to have the original two RollerCoaster Tycoon games on my iPad, it seems like the game would fit perfectly with a touch interface, isn't demanding (it came out in the 90s!), and is incredibly addictive, nostalgic, and entertaining.

http://www.gamershell.com/static/screenshots/3256/50798_full.jpg

That screenshot I found is at 1024x768, all they'd need to do is enlarge the interface buttons a little(which there's plenty of room for).

Only problem is I can't find any contact info for Chris Sawyer, the creator of these games, to ask him if he's up for it or not. If he were to do it, it'd be a goldmine for him as well as an amazing game for iPad owners.

Anyone else a fan?

Ah, the good ol' days of trapping guests inside the park with no enter sign and building mazy wooden roller coasters. I myself am a RCT veteran. I bought the original in 2nd grade and still play it 9 years in the future. I've bought RCT 1 and 2 and all the expansion packs and love this franchise to death. I'd pay $30 to $40 just to have either game porter to iPad. If only we could contact Chris Sawyer, he could make millions with this!

P.S. Have you played Locomotion?

Would be interesting to see. Although I imagine it could be a little complicated to work on a small touchscreen.

Check out AirCoaster XL (iTunes link (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/aircoaster-xl/id364899325?mt=8)).
The ONLY roller coaster simulator and track editor for the iPhone/iPod touch is now BIGGER and BETTER than ever!

Once you are done, buckle up and ride your very own roller coaster in the front seat!

Don't want to create your own tracks? Go to the Community tab and download any of over tens of thousands of tracks. Interact with your favorite track creators, write on their walls, follow them, and more!

I think it would be Frontier Development (http://www.frontier.co.uk/home/) you would need to contact these days, not Chris Sawyer.

From RCT3 website:
Q: Who is developing the game? Is Chris Sawyer programming RCT3?

A: RollerCoaster Tycoon® 3 was developed by Frontier Developments, Ltd. of Cambridge, England, in conjunction with Chris Sawyer, the creator and sole developer of the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise. Frontier and its founder, David Braben, have a long association with Chris Sawyer going back to 1987, when Chris first worked on PC versions of the famous "Elite" and “Virus” games. Chris Sawyer did not program RCT3, but provided design and technical consultations to the development team.

I doubt it will ever come out for the iPad. I believe it was written almost completely in assembly language.

Hell yes, I was thinking how awesome RCT would be on this thing in the few hours after I bought it. I poured untold hours into that game... That, SimCity 3000 and Caesar III. I'm sure SimCity is on the way, but getting the other two would be great!

I would absolutely love RCT 1/2 on iPad. The hardware is more than sufficient to run it. Perhaps we all could contact Chris Sawyer and inquire. He has said RCT3 was the end of the series, but this could be enough of a side project for him to bring in a fantastic amount of income and rekindle people's interest in RCT.

I just checked out his site and apparently you have to contact him through an agency. Their site is none too helpful, though.

See for yourselves: http://www.chrissawyergames.com.

I love RCT 1, 2 and 3, I'd love to have any of them on my ipad, along with the original sims (full game not these half a*#$d attempts currently out), zoo tycoon 1 or 2 and finally Age of Empires 1 or 2...

Any real game would be good, every game I've played so far in the app store (except Plant VS Zombies which took me weeks to get through (casual player)) just doesn't have the same depth. As soon as ports like these appear though the iPad really can advertise itself as a viable games platform.

The graphic and genre of Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 would awesome on the iPad.
The 2D graphic is perfect.

I didn't like Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 because of the 3D. Why 3D anywhere? 2D is the perfect key for games like these.

I love RC and RC 2. If they were to release them both as a bundle, with the expansions, I'd pay $50 for it. I wish we could find his real address, so we could send him fan mail to do it on the iPad.

Locomotion is a splendid game also, I enjoy it even more than RC sometimes. You should definitely buy it! It also has a demo.

RollerCoaster Tycoon was definitely a great game, but it doesn't beat Transport Tycoon Deluxe in awesomeness :D. Many hours of my youth wasted on that one. Actually, how cool would it be if OpenTTD (http://www.openttd.org/en/) was ported to the iPad? Unfortunately I think even Mac OS X development has been halted. And I think it still requires the GFX and sound files from the original, which would be a problem for an app store version.

I would pay a lot of Money for the iPad version, as long as it was more like the original roller coaster tycoon and not the third one. That one ruined the future of the game. The only cool part on that version was the pools.

Akash.B
Sep 26, 2010, 12:04 PM
Locomotion is the spiritual successor to transport Tycoon Deluxe. The original RCT was going to be Locomotion, but Chris Sawyer was very interested in roller coasters at the time. So after RC1 and two? In 2004 he released Locomotion. There's a whole interview at IGN about it.

Actually, how cool would it be if OpenTTD (http://www.openttd.org/en/) was ported to the iPad?

It was, briefly. It was ported, but then pulled after some of the other developers complained that it broke the rules of the open source license. That was resolved and it came back - when i downloaded it - but unfortunately it's since disappeared from the App Store again. To be honest it mostly works, but nothin's been scaled for touchscreen so it's pretty much impossible to play unless you have a stylus (which i don't have, so have never got any further than building a couple of bits of road before i abandoned it). Shame, because with a usable (at keast resized, ideally redine with touch in mind) interface it could have been really good.

Best...idea...ever...

My two favourite PC games were RCT and SimCity 3000 back in the day! They were engaging, elegant, with layers of complexity and even had great music!

There is a reasonable SC3K iPhone app (although I don't own it- screen too small) but no iPad app (which would rule). If an RCT iPad app came out too I'd be tempted to get one!

There were legal disputes between Chris Sawyer and Frontier, so I wouldn't get your hopes up for any port to the iPad. Or anything else for that matter. Which is a shame because it was an excellent franchise and made lots of money. It could be quite successful again. I know that I sure would buy it.

Yeah I remember Theme Hospital. These kind of game would be awesome on the iPad, perfect for a touch interface.

It is but at the same time, that game always turned into a micromanagement nightmare as the levels went up, that might be a bit difficult to balance.

On top of RollerCoaster Tycoon, most of the old "sim"-type games would transfer pretty well onto the iPad, for instance Sim Golf would be perfect for the iPad, as with SimEarth, SimAnt, etc.

Of course the big one is a new Civilization game. The Civ Revolution was a very fun game on its own but you can't help but to feel there's something that can be done in a much more elegant way if a more capable developer took upon that project.

I want "Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?" on the iPad!!

That would be great. Two other Broderbund games too: Caplitalism and The Last Express!! (Anybody remember this one?)

Oh, I think Wing Commander would be great too but that might just be me.

I do wonder if the low price and nature of many iPad game (10 minute bit of fun) is going to hamper the development of gaming on the iPad.

Whilst the small one or two man team may make a small fortune if they hit the top charts on the iPad. How many major companies that employ many programmers, graphics artists, music and sound effect specialists etc etc are going to want to aim for a $4.99 or less price bracket for their new product?

Whilst I love low prices for game and apps I don't suppose it's helping make large companies decide if it's worth to develop for the platform.

The really big companies can just soak up the cost just to be seen to be visible on the platform of course and actually lose money on what they produce.

This would be EPIC!!

Spent many hours and days just building theme parks. Loved RCT1 and 2 but really really hated 3 because of the 3D, it seemed to have lost what made the original such a classic.

Love the idea of a facebook page, we should also try and get this going on Twitter too.... lets make it go viral, there are probably hundreds of thousands of Roller Coast Tycoon fans still out there, all the we need to do it prove the companies that there's still an audience for it.

FYI, I've got Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 working on the iPad...

It's obviously not installed directly on the iPad, and it still needs a mouse at times, but it's not bad really.

I installed RCT3 on my iMac using Wineskin (http://www.paulthetall.com/page39/page107/page107.html) and Splashtop Remote app on my iPad - which is fast enough to stream videos and games remotely.

Then just remotely connected from the iPad to the iMac, which changes the screen res to 1024x768 (iPad res), when you run RCT3 it looks like it's running natively :)

As I said, it's not totally usable for everything in the game due to the interface - but it's nice to have a play about with.

Am I the only one who actually liked RCT3? It was meh at first, but after the platinum came out I made myself get used to the bubble interface because of all the things you could now do that you couldn't do before.

It also helps that I finally own a computer that can run it smoothly. It was released way before its time for many people, and in my opinion that's another factor in its lack of popularity.

Normally I would say there is little hope, but the recent release of Sid Meier's Pirates is encouraging.

Also, Air coaster looks sick.

Back on topic. It won't happen. At all. Mainly because it would require an entire re-write

The game was written and compiled using MS Macro Assembler V6.11c, MS Visual C V5, MS DirectX 5 SDK, plus assorted custom-written tools.

It's 99% written in x86 assembler/machine code (yes, really!), with a small amount of C code used to interface to MS Windows and DirectX.

Yeah, i've tried Theme Park, but it isn't that fun, and isn't similar to RCT; you can't build your own rides(rollercoasters), The places where the rides have to be build are already specified and you can't control the terrain.

what we would need:
- funding (unknown)
- the rights to RCT(atari own its)
- a IOS licence

It would be awesome with online gaming capabilities, so you could go head-to-head against your friends with the ability to resume games when everyone is present.

OMG! I can't believe it but Atari announced they are bringing RCT to iOS! Hope it won't be as bad as RCT3 but still excited regardless. :D

Oh my gosh, if theme park world or theme hospital came to iOS, I would do something.. crazy?
I'd just be really excited.

I'd love to play it on the iPad.

It's extremely unlikely we'll ever see the first two RCT games released for iPad.

Most of the code for RCT and RCT2 was written in assembly for the x86 architecture. That's why there weren't any Mac versions released. You can get the classic games to run on Intel macs with Wine, but that's about it.

What is wrong with RCT3?

I was never that keen on rct2 but 3 got me hooked and I still play it occasionally even now.

I used to love these games as a kid. I hope they would do this. Its only common sense in a newly forming tablet world. My major concern though is that they only make it for Windows Tablets like the new surface....

Probably the fact that you could run rct2 on a pentium I/II but needed a way more powerful machine for rct3. I didn't mind rct3 but there was definitely a big difference in style and gameplay. I play both occasionally. The good thing is rct2 really didn't leave anything out from rct1.

Still waiting for this to happen. I've been playing RCT3 a lot lately and would love to play a RCT game on my mini!
