I am a pc geek (although I grew up with apple ][e and an apple2c, mystery house was my fav game)..

anywho, his wife's emac at home has failed to boot, so i am thinking power supply....

Whats the procedure to get a new one, replace it, etc... is it just like a pc?

sorry, im a newb to apple stuff, and those emac's are one complete unit right?

thanks

See if it's under warranty... if it is... Apple should fix it... that'd be your best bet of course.

If it's under 1 year old -you're covered by warranty - contact Apple
If it's between 1-3 years old AND you have Applecare - you're covered - contact Apple
Otherwise it's an out of warranty repair (read 'surprisingly expensive') :(

Stating that it has failed isn't a very consise way of explaining what is wrong. Can you describe the symptoms, the problems, errors? Will it start up? Does the problem(s) occur after startup? ;)

I'd first see if it's under warranty.

Then I'd ask to see the machine to diagnose the problem more specifically.

(Or, alternatively, just tell them to send it to Apple.)

I haven't read about too many PSUs failing on Macs. I'd say Battery died - if it's fairly old, though unlikely because emacs aren't that old.

Unless shorted by a powersurge. Then the PSU would be kaput.

The logic board could also be at falt.

Also check to make sure it is plugged in.

I had a friend who also had an eMac that wouldn't boot. Sounds silly, but power down and unplug all usb devices from the computer. Disconnect the power cord. Let is sit over night. Plug just the keyboard and mouse back in, and try powering up.

If it works add the other devices. I know, I know..........but I read this on Apple's eMac discussion forum, recommended it to a friend, and it worked.

Good luck,
Dan
