1) VW Beetle like car that is apple logo'd
2) Car is obviously battery powered (or hybrid) and can drive for 10+ hours without a charge (to match your iPod)
3) iPod plugs into the firewired dashboard for all your favorite tunes.
4) Handspring makes a PDA/Cel with Newton OS that is connected to the steering wheel and is voice activated so that chatting is handsfree.
5) Tibook docks on the center console and iMap automatically starts up, checks the cars GPS and puts the Apple car on the map.
6) As you start the car, it automatically dials out to get internet access and your eWorld account is logged onto.
7) Heads up display can be toggled with an iPod-like control on the steering wheel to show car functions, iMap, eWorld, iPod screen, Newton screen,...
I was just joking when I started to write this... but everything I've said... the technology exists. (except for the 10 hour battery life for the car)... I want one.

My God! I can't believe that Apple would go so far as to hype something up this big unless we're all missing something important here. Let's speculate....
What are the major rumors out there so far?
-G5
-Flat Panel iMac
-New consumer device (sony/apple?)
-AMD/Intel version of OSX
-Dodecahedron enclosures (that's 12 sided)
-Touch pad technology
-PDA
So.... beyond the rumor sites, eh? What in the world could we possibly be missing here? It is either all of the above, or some of the above and then something else which no one has heard a whisper about. The big question is... What is Product X? (no pun intended)
Myself, I'd make a wild guess and say that it will be several types of consumer devices. What do they do? Probably the same stuff that most devices do, only it'll be so amazingly simple to use that people will slap themselves on their foreheads and say "Gee! Now why didn't I think of that?"
Makes sense, no? I mean, Apple is best at reinventing things with insane flair. We're not gonna see flying cars or anything, so what's left?

a) a full X10 setup (with gigawire options) in a box...
b) ...connecting to the iMediaCenter...
c) ...which consists of...pioneer dvd writer, removable touch screen/remote (extended ipod-style interface), able to support new media components (digital radio, mp3, cd-whatever, dvd, etc, etc) with gigawire.
d) whilst u don't need a mac to use all this, having a mac allows you to use the iMediaCenter as a (integrated)peripheral.
e) ...and a dock to use part of the system, in your car.
f) and finally, a mouse with fingerprint id technology built in, which continuously monitors and authenticates the user.

I've heard little on rumor sites about mergers. With IBM's personal computer business producing massive losses for the companies, are IBM going to crawl to apple? Or maybe apple will grab Motorola and do that in house?? Or maybe we'll see Sony and Apple join as a force in digital devices... M$ are competing with sony in a number of markets (for example xbox vs ps2 and sericsson)... Just speculation...
But bringing the discussion back to earth, i think pkradd is right, it's someone at apple with a sense of humor who must enjoy watching these and other forums light up with people speculating even more.

These headlines have been programmed into the page for a while - Apple didn't put that up in response to actual reading of rumor sites like this one.
For all this hype, I predict:
- g5 announcement - shipping delayed to near future
- flat panel iMac (almost a letdown after all our speculation - heh)
- iPod 1.0 firmware 1.3 (onboard EQ & more)
- iPhoto debuts
- iView (dvd hardware player)
- Gigawire in the announced g5s
- new revs of iBook, TI g4, desktop g4s

if apple is going to release any new iDevices, they will probably be very similar to the iPod. with the iPod, apple took an existing technology (the portable mp3 player) massively improved on it. it is reasonable to expect other iDevices to follow suit. so to find out what they apple is cooking up, we have to ask ourselves "what device involves computer technology and can be massively improved upon without too much trouble?" take a digital camera for example (im no pro on digital cameras, im just speculating and i may be wrong). the digital cameras of today usually use flash memory cards for storage. same goes for most mp3 players. apple improved on the mp3 player by adding a huge hard drive. apple could also improve on the digital camera by adding a huge hard drive to that. if it followed the design of the iPod, it would be the size of deck of cards. it would also have firewire. imagine a digital camera like that! it would cost a lot so it would probably fill the same marketing niche as the iPod. it seems that apple is trying to make these iDevices far better than any of the competition. apply that same reasoning to just about any high tech device u use today and see what u can come up with =)
someone here mentioned the iView, a hardware dvd player if i remember correctly. to find out how likely this is, we apply the same logic i just applied to the digital camera. how can it be massively improved upon in a way that involves computers? apple will not make a dvd player unless it sees a way to blow all other dvd players away.
there are so many things in todays world that could be easily improved upon if only given a bit of thought. good luck and happy speculating!

News this big can't stay hidden forever. It will come out before MacWorld. I definitely don't think the sayings on the site are pre-programmed. I've been mining the graphics for quite awhile trying to see if there are any other ones in thier site.
Possiblilites:
• This has merger written all over it. I am thinking Apple buys a game company, NVidia, ATI, Sony, Motorola or ome other current partner. IBM is too big for Apple to buy their Market Cap is $200+ Billion. IF they announce any type of merger with M$, i'd be upset.
• Every new Powermac comes with a Segway Human Transporter
• OS X on Intel does not seem logical or probible.
• We are going to see a new Apple with a completely new direction with a radically changed lineup of computers and devices. They pretty much just auctioned off a lot of their inventory on DoveBid last week.
• They may have found a way to run OS 9 apps natively in OS X quite possibly.
• I still thing Apple is going to release a huge huge server with everthing I and everyone else ever wanted.
• SGI currently sucks, maybe some type of merger with them? Pixar is probably one of SGI's better customers.
It's a scooter, obviously. One that crashes periodically.

Its become a feeding frenzy for all this speculation. I find myself sitting here getting little tingling feelings on all the possibilities, yet another part of me knows nothing can live up to it all.

Thats what we are here for, isnt it? To enjoy the rumorbomb. We LIKE it!
The last time Apple hyped something this big, there was a different, but now familiar slogan-"Why 1984 won't be like 1984." We all know what we got then. I agree with previous posts: Apple has dropped the bomb and I am so flustered I can't even speculate anymore. Whatever their plan was, it worked on me. If I was the one at Apple who did this, I would be quite happy with myself right now. The only thing that makes me suspect is that we have seen no TV commercials for something that must be this huge. It seems that maybe Apple is stroking our collective rumor-mongering egos. I'm loving every minute of it. :-)

With bankrupcies rising, it is totally irresponsible for Apple to deliver excitement and fantastic new products. Consumers will be utterly incapable of ignoring them, and will buy buy buy.
Seriously, Apple has some major cajones. That's some statement on their site.
I pray to the heavens that M$ and Apple do not merge, because that would basically mean that Apple was PURCHASED by M$. And it would mean more monopoly complaints against M$, so I do not see Gates doing it. Nor do I really see Jobs giving up control of Apple, which would be the lynchpin of any deal--Gates would want control. Compared to a M$ merger, a Sony merger sounds just dandy. So does a Motorola/IBM/ATI/NVidia (or some combination) merger.
What it DOES mean is that I am not going to buy that used iBook off of eBay (at least not until after MacWorld...) and that I will probably be several thousand dollars more in debt within the next month or two...but happily so, with my new i(whatsit)....
The suspense is killing me!!!

I do not believe that a Intel box version of Mac OSX is likely, because Apple makes their cash on hardware.
HOWEVER--if they were EVER going to do it, now is the time. Win XP is probably the LEAST POPULAR OS M$ has released in 10 years. And Apple CAN control hardware, by having a very specific list of requirements for Intel/AMD boxes (e.g., requires Intel 1.5 or AMD 1.2, Fire wire and USB ports, etc., etc., certain sound card, certain graphics card, etc.) People who upgrade to OS X with a non-approved box do not get customer support. Or maybe Apple begins manufacturing a proprietary Intel/AMD box, or maybe just use a proprietary motherboard.
As I said, unlikely, but possible. But if they were ever going to do it, their time is now.

I could understand your reasoning for making a detailed list of requirements for an Intel/AMD OS X, but I doubt that many Intel/AMD users would purchase it (except for us mac fans). It wouldn't be worth the cost for development.
Steve Jobs... if you read this.... I can imagine you sitting in your office with some top VPs neeling around your mac trying to think up the most dastardly headline the confuse all of us, and then blow us away at MWSF. Fine. I understand. I've read nearly every book about you and apple (I needed some reading material for a long vacation this summer) and I think I may have tad bit of understanding of your management style. So what I'm asking you to do is this: keep having your fun. There's nothing I enjoy more than having a little fun. You've got quite a captive audience here with your mac fans, and we all know it's just a little fun. And I'm sure that you know that it's fun, and then you will blow us away at MWSF. I'm okay with that. In fact, I welcome your next message. I think we're all barking up the wrong tree here... Thinking woz's gameboy is a PDA... Man some people here REALLY want a PDA... I think Apple's going to come out with something NONE of us have imagined before now. Something as revolutionary as the Mac OS. Something as revolutionary as the Segway. And I am unqualified to guess. But I will say this, Steve: Don't let us down. If you and your friends sitting in your office messing with our minds come out with a simple product revision like you did at MWNY, then I think you will be faced with some serious loss of business. But, I doubt you'll let us down. One thing about you: You know a great product when you see one. XeroxPARC, Macintosh (Raskin's idea... Your baby), NeXT, OS X, and what comes next? I think iPod was a product thrown out there just to test the water. It floats. I hope whatever comes next does as well.
And, Steve, if you do happen upon this, send me an email. I won't beg for a product list for MWSF. I'd just like to say "hi."

Jan 2, 2002, 09:51 AM
I just went to my local Apple dealer in Amsterdam. Checking up the price for an iBook, he suddenly went silent and then said "strange, Apple is listing somethings called PowerPod, not yet available". I saw the listing myself. Wanting to put an order on one immediately, we tried to do that. However, the listing seems to have been an error as the product wasn't able to be ordered. The seller reloaded the listing, and the PowerPod on the list was gone. Apple is messing with us!
This all makes sense: We've got the iBook and the iMac, the PowerBook and the PowerMac. We've got the iPod.... and soon we will have the PowerPod!!
My guess is that the PowerPod will be the ultimate handheld!

My sources inside the US Dept of Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) have confirmed the following:
APPLE COMPUTER HAS FINALIZED AN HISTORIC AGREEMENT WITH FIDEL CASTRO TO PURCHASE CUBA!
It seems that ol' Fidel has been longing for a bit of retirement in Vancouver, British Columbia for sometime. He's agreed to sell his country to Apple for an undisclosed sum (rumored to be in the hundreds of dollars!)
By the end of January, Apple will be giving every cuban a new iPod and they will be renaming the country to iCuba. Apple plans on relocating it's corporate offices to Havana by the end of 2002.

Another news site mentioned an announcement from IDG regarding the moving of the keynote. I did some digging for this announcement and found something interesting:
http://www.businesswire.com/cgi-bin/f_headline.cgi?bw.010202/220022043&ticker=IDGTS
It mentions a long list of exhibitors presenting new products, including:
- VPC5, OS9 and OSX native
- VectorWorks 9.5, OSX-native CAD program
- LightWave 3D version 7
As well as several other interesting apps. The two that really caught my eye, however, were the following:
- "Six Degrees, a new product set to transform the desktop by allowing content creators, creative professionals,
marketing professionals and digital file authors to quickly navigate through the clutter of the desktop in a powerful new way"
- "ThinkFree Office, a Microsoft(R) Office compatible suite of word processing, spreadsheet and
presentation graphics applications, which uses Java technology to support a wide variety of operating systems and device platforms"
Go to http://www.thinkfree.com for that last item... this looks VERY interesting...

The fastest 64bit Processor selling right now is made by Intel, called the itanium. Its 800mHz, and it does the job better than any chip out right now. So, it doesnt have to be 2.4 gHz to be unbelievably fast.

what has apple been very weak in lately?
GAMES!!!
I predict that Apple has signed a deal with either Sega which we produce games for apple including the highly rated 2k sports series,{they are producing games for every one else or with Sony which will allow Apple to make an emulation progam that will run playstation 2 games on all 500MHZ or higher ati rage pro128 or higher Macs
What I would like to see is a full 1year tech support in addition to the 1 year warranty. The same imac software bundle will be included with pro systems with the addition of techtool pro lite, iphoto, games{chess, checkers, tony hawk 2, virtua fighter, shemmue2, etc}, final cut pro light and get this , an actual big thick manual!!
wishful thinking huh?
a fire wire adapter for ipod that will allow musicians and journalist to capture up to 24bit sound thru a built in stereo condenser mic or mic and digtal inputs along with a standard leather case and belt clip 6month warranty upgradable to 2 years {repairable} and a price of $299.
All powermacs will be duals
dual 1.2 apollo dvd/cdrw 80GB 512MB gf2 $1799
dual 1.4 apollo dvdrw/cdrw 100GB 1GB gf3 $2399
DUAL 1.6 G5 dvdrw/cdrw 120GB 1.5GB GF3 twin $2999
the G5 will have a titanium finish trimmed in gold with a lcd info panel on front
all powermacs will have tv-in/out svhs cable connectors
and will be able to be used as Tivo devices
A digital camcorder co -developed with sony that uses no tape but instead a 7200rpm 10GB version of ipods
hard drive
A 5 megapixal camera with the ipods 5GB hard drive co devoloped with canon with interchangeble lenses and firewire and usb printing directly from the camera.
WISHFUL THINKING?

Lot's of mentions of PS2/XBox emulation but what about Nintendo? The GameCube is so hot right now that many retailers are hard pressed to keep them in stock. It runs on a custom IBM G3 chip and ATI graphics (and sound I've heard).
How hard would it be to make a Mac run those games?
Just a thought.

Digital camera that uses iPod for its storage is too obvious - but probable.
Merger is the most likely - but its a product merge, not a co. merge.
Apple and Sony combine to bring you the killer game thing or something.
Apple and IBM combine to bring you OS X on PowerPC on IBM laptops - Now that could work.....
OS X Server running on IBM PowerPC big iron - yes.
Some how this involves IBM, Sony and Apple shooting for yet another challenge to M$.
And this time - WE WIN!
But no.
Apple has started this 'centre of your digital
universe type of thing', so its a product merge with Sony or similar.
Every one is hurting financially, so you combine with another big quality co. and both sides benefit.
BTW, sorry for starting the OS X on Intel thing.....!
I dont really think it will fly, and my 'logical argument' on the OS and quality hardware was flawed, to say the least.

you are right on, i think
look to other sources like sears like the segway rumor sites looked to the patent office and got the real facts
sears is like a giant compared to apple so if what your grandmother says is accurate, we are in for a totally redesigned imac (short necked crt and smaller footprint imac would be almost as cool as lcd)
the flat panel lcd imac will do more for apple than a g5 or dual g5 or an apple-segway licensed scooter because the imac will be aimed at the regular person and new users and that is what will make apple's valuation go back up again
lcd imac, that's all, but that's really enough and we will be excitied

1. "Big even by our standards"
Apples standards have for a long time been "Its not the cpu speed its other factors", "Its not just megahertz", and the "Megahertz Myth."
2. "Beyond the rumor sites, way beyond"

First of all:
>>Anyone can reply / add comments to news articles.<<
Is BS. Now, let's see if I can remember what I wrote.
Robotics! Yes, robots. Apple branded light utillity robots for the home and yard controlled via Airport by an OS X Mac. The first, iBot, will be an indoor floor maintenance droid that sweeps, vaccums, mops, and waxes around the home. The second, PowerBot, will be an intellegent lawn tractor that will do the same for the yard; mowing, leafing, trimming, even picks up sticks!
This is a wide open market that overworked people around the world have been yearning many years for. Apple, with it's fantastic brand name and industrial design, is a perfect match for this unplumbed market.
For a prediction not simply pulled out of my ass: I happen to know a major appliance manufacturer has been doing some very hush-hush, tell no one type of pre launch advertising. iFridge perhaps? I doubt it as one of my users would have clued me into anything that cool, but ya never know...

Steve Jobs is a major financial backer of Segway. Apple Design Group has designed a new model called iSnoway. Jobs says it will change the way city governments plow snow, "It's revolutionary, just think, no more shoveling snow, IT just blows it aside...this changes everything...what fun!" Dean Kamen says, "Grandma will never have to get her hip replaced, iSnoway will take her to the mailbox and back, never taking one step on the ice. Think of it as an enhancement on Moon-boots. Steve just keeps coming up with these ideas, I don't know how he does it." iSnoway will have a 20" clearing path, topping out at 5mph with a distance of 2 city blocks per charge. iSnoway has been seen being tested in Buffalo, NY this past week, though no one has been able to catch one on film. IT will sport storage for an optional winter survival kit ($399) and a built-in handy iPod clip. iSnoway is set to retail at $10,399 (not including snow-chains, $399 add-on) and will go on sale starting June at the San Diego, CA Apple Store. Rumor has it, iSnoway will be available "Slush Grey", "Husky Yellow", "Washer-fluid Blue", "Hockey-fight Red" and special edition "Black Ice". I have an exclusive PR photo of iSnoway, follow link below.

IBM and Motorola have developed a 1024 bit processor running at 16 MHz (just like my first Mac) that is 1073.76% faster than a 2.0 GHZ Pentium 4, requires less than 1/100th of the power, generates less than 1/100th the heat, and can be manufactured for about one dollar. Laptop battery life is about 3 days.
imacs/ibooks will get one 16MHz processor, pro Macs get quad (4) 16MHz, and Powerbooks get two. Apple's new graphics card runs using the same design processor, and is 390% faster than GeForce 3 and 420% faster than ATI Radeon 8500.
Anyone who has purchased a Mac within one year qualifies for a "half off" rebate for being a loyal Machead.

Interesting side note from Apple's press release on their MWSF plans.. another special event on tap ..
Feature Presentation:
“Power of X”—Avie Tevanian, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, and Philip Schiller, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
What: A presentation on the world’s most advanced operating system
When: Tuesday, January 8, 12 p.m. PST
Where: Moscone Convention Center, South Hall Rooms 103/104
This means no big talk from Steve J during the big event about OS X. Now he has 2.5 hours sked ..looking for him to break Gil Amelio's 3 hour mark and he wont talk about X much .. humm.. Or could this be a place holder for another Apple session to reiterate the new and special toys for those who didn't make new travel plans. In either case it should be interesting.

I believe that it is very possible for Apple to release OSX on Intel. How? Release a single version of it and sware to never update it. That would make them a great deal of cash because a good deal of the x86 folks will go running to try it on their boxen, nobody from the PPC world would ever think of jumping ship if the operating system would never again be updated for the x86 platform and if enough people like OSX on their machines it's very possible they'll make the switch to Apple hardware.
Of course there are problems in that theory ... but that's the only way it could possibly ever happen without Apple going out of business.

The only problem is that OS X on Intel has been a rumor forever, and it's WAY BEYOND that.
We are not thinking the right direction, yes Apple will release some cool new G4/G5's, Yes, Apple will have some new Mac to replace the iMac.
What else could Apple possibly make better that there is so little of? Broadband.
If Apple can create some sort of Broadband access that can be accessed from anywhere, anytime. They'd be the richest company in the world. No joke.
There was a lot of talk of wireless Firewire awhile back that Apple had developed.
Another Road Less Travelled: Xerox Parc's Reasearch facility comes up with some really cool stuff including paper-thin monitors. (Actually paper thin).: (an excerpt):
"Digital Document Media
Gyricon Media Incorporated (GMI), a company recently spun out of PARC, is developing electrically addressable, re-writable substrates for a range of applications, with an initial focus on wireless, battery-operated signs for the retail signage market. A PARC group is conducting research on devices and applications for a variety of mobile, hand-held applications. "

Ummm, the Dodecahedron enclosure is the rumored new G5 enclosure, due in April. It's not some fantasy concoction, or a joke. What's pretty sure is that Apple is toying with a dodecahedron shape, but knowing apple, it's probably one of many new designs, and probably won't see the light of day.

ok really - this is it...
Apple will announce that they have purchased Transitive Technologies and plans to incorporate Dynamite (which in TTL's own words, "dynamically accelerates object code without recompilation") into OSX 10.2.
Instead of porting OSX to Intel, they create within OSX, the inherent ability to run XP applications at near native speed - transparently in OSX. It's a great idea - first, they don't cannibalize hardware sales by offering X on Intel (not to mention the bad press they would get when these PC knuckleheads have a tough time running X on their P3 450). Second, they create a safe window for windows users to move to the Apple platform without having to sacrifice their collection of software. Then, when it comes time to upgrade, they will have seen the advantage in moving to native X apps, and take the plunge completely!
Considering the sad flop that VPC5 is (and always has been, for that matter), this will be a prime opportunity for Apple to appeal to the other 95 - who are just looking for a way to dump M$ once and for all.
Sales of 2Ghz G5's will go through the roof since it'll run XP faster than any Intel or AMD box available!
I can hardly breathe!

I think It will be a PDA of some sort. Apple still uses the Newton name too... If you go to http://www.newton.com it takes you to http://www.apple.com . Also I think there will be a huge speed bump 2+ghz and new flat panel i-macs.

Run windows apps on OSX properly? Hmmm, I like it.

Wait a sec... Didn't I hear once that XP runs more with more speed and stability on PowerPC processors? That's probably a just a rumor... But this is "MacRumors."

Its gotta be somthing we haven't thought of yet. Im gonna say its prolly not OS X for wintel, prolly not a PDA. And yea I hope they come up with a better name than i___ somthing. What would be cool is a digital hub device thats basically a multimedia settop box with a HD, DVD/CD-rw (possibly a superdrive) and a striped down version of X. And this would all connect to your TV and Sound system. I'd have a modem and ethernet for a broadband connection and would allow you to stream quicktime media (hopefully QT6 with mpeg4) on your TV. The hd would be used to store mp3s ripped from the drive. It's possible. I bealieve there is a product out there that will stream real player stuff to a HD...
Well its just a speculation, just somethin i thought would be cool.
Ok guys, I'm sorry , but that spymac movie looks pretty dang real to me. I have seen my share of fakes. but this looks like the real deal. I hope it is so I can poo-poo all of you people who have pissed on me for the PDA hopes.

Sorry, just a little pent-up anticipation leaking out.

So I've been following this discussion all along, and feel a need to chime in. I am surprised no one else has stated what seems an obvious possibility--that the iPod does more. Having bought one already, I am impressed with what it can do, but I don't think that it is at all "revolutionary."
Unless it does more.
Jobs called it a "digital hub." To me, this implies that it is a central switching point for other devices. While it sort of meets this criteria already, what if it has an inherent ability to connect to other devices that Jobs has planned--such as a DVD player, stereo, or coffee maker? Through either bluetooth or 802.11b technology (as Apple is clearly leading the way into the wireless future), the iPod could serve as a switching station for other devices. While there are clearly other ways to accomplish this, it's the only way that I actually see it as a "digital hub."
The most obvious argument against this is that it potentially makes it less stationary--after all, what good is your wireless digital network if it stops working when the hub goes with you for your workout?
Still, I can't help but think that the iPod might have been the first device in a whole new "home" line Apple has planned.
Just a thought.
Whatever it will be, I believe it will be insanely great.
And yes...the PDA video looks very convincing. Interesting...

for anyone who watched the ipod's press release (apple still has it on their site), it is obvious that apple is planning a bunch of iDevices. jobs gave 4 areas that he said apple wanted to cover in their digital hub strategy and said that ipod covered the music quarter. two of the others were video and pictures. i dont remember what the last one was. it is likely that all other idevices will follow in the footsteps of the ipod, so they will all be similar (size, shape, color, specs, etc....). chew on that =)

Seems that the name iWalk is already taken....
this is what it is...

No, not the guy, but the crutch he is using...
So, I guess this adds another point to why the iWalk videos might be fake....
BUT... remember that the name iPod was already taken too??
So if Apple got around that obstacle, it could get around this one, too, if iWalk was real....
