The data caps are going to suck if we ever get turn-by-turn GPS.

If we ever get a turn-by-turn GPS for free on the iPhone, it's going to eat up all our data. How do they expect us to not go over 2GB with all these new apps and stuff coming out?

Well pretty much if you have unlimited now you keep it. Because as it's been reiterated time and time again your plan will be GRANDFATHERED.
 
I have turn by turn, on my Nexus One, and I'm not blowing up on space.

As others have already stated, if you are already an AT&T customer, then you're safe - why worry.

Beside, I don't think turn by turn is going to consume over 2gb of bandwidth
 
turn by turn navigation shouldn't use data at all as the apps usually have map data pre-bought.

I'm not an AT&T customer right now. So I'm trying to think of a way I can get unlimited data before Monday, even though the new phone isn't out yet.
 
Turn by turn GPS does not use data at all. I can take my sim out of my phone, start up my Tom Tom or CoPilot and it will still function 100%.

The OP is referring to free Turn by turn AKA Google Navigation. Google Nav does NOT pre-download maps. It requires a constant data connection.

I wonder how data-intensive it is. Anyone with a Droid want to chime in?

What makes you think they don't expect you to go over the cap? If you do, it's more money for them. They don't care about how interesting or useful any apps are for iPhone users – what they do care about is how they get paid for the use of their network.
 
And if you grandfather your plan you can't tether...

I wonder if they'll set it up so if they detect you tethering they'll automatically switch plans for you (and then of course, you can't switch back)?
