Headphone socket only sends out sound to the right channel - Please help!

When I plug in headphones or a 2.1 speaker set-up into my iMac, sound only comes through the right channel. I have checked my Audio MIDI Set-up and the sound section in System Preferences and I cannot find anything wrong. The balance slider is in the middle and it is recognised by the Mac when I plug it in. What do I do?

are you certain you have firmly plugged the cable in? sometimes when i pump my iMac it will convert back to one sided playback, fiddling with the cable fixes it.

other then that im not sure. :(
