Did a verbose boot...saw "ATY_Init loaded for card 9588"
followed by "ATY_init quit" or something along these lines. 9588 being the 2600 I am using to run monitor...no mention of 5870

Yes, it might be the case. Also, netkas found GTX 480 support on new OS X images, so that is also the other alternative.

Apple wouldn't have the drivers if they weren't going to use them. May not be the 5870, though. I've heard rumblings that we'll see 5750s in the next iMac. The driver technically works for any card in the series with the right prodding, so it doesn't really matter in the long run which gets officially used, just that one of 'em does.

Dang, I get KP with "ATIRadeonX3000.kext" on my ATi Mobility Radeon 5650.

If I try and boot with aty_int latest the one with the typo fix? it boots, but I get a very distorted screen and I can't make out anything, lol. I know it boots fine cause I can hear the sound and use the power button and enter key to shut down. :P

So my question is... is there a way to get an ioreg dump without the new ATi kext's installed? from what I see in verbose boot aty_int fails to get the dump. Cause I can boot without any new kext's other than the latest aty_int.kext

Just want to point out that one of the kexts was causing a AppleIntelCpuPowermanagement timeout (hangs) on boot. Don't know if that helps.

I removed all kexts with linux, will repair on mac os x and will try again with the order you suggested

YES!!!!! Detected my 5870 in system profiler!!!

I removed all custom kexts. I compeltey cleaned up the kexts folder with kext utility, and then re-installed aty-init.kext and restarted. I managed to boot this time with no kernel panic. And now the 5870 is detected.

Of course, Im still getting nowhere because im still in vesa.

Now onto the other kexts.

Something is not right here.

I installed only 5000controller before I read your last message. It had an 'error detecting bios signature' on verbose boot and then hangs.

I removed both 5000controller and aty_init, and started from scratch with JUST aty_init.

Now even though I have just aty_init I am still booting with error detecting bios signature and then hangs. This is odd becuase I was booting fine before and detecting the graphics card. Please can you help.

Use a tool like Kext Helper. Just dropping it in doesn't work.

I have been doing it by going into windows and using macdrive and deleting them from the file system. Or you can do it from a linux live CD.

Odd, I got a slight 'glitch' just now after installing the 3000 kexts. After restart when I logged in I suddenly had a bunch of purple lines, but my other monitor in dual screen was still working.

Rominiator. If I were you I'd clean out your kexts and start again. I was having lots of kernel panics when I was swapping the aty_init around, so I did them one by one from scratch. I even used kext utility to repair permissions and so on and I found that helped until eventually i wasnt getting kernel panics. Maybe it will help for you.

here is kinda universal version, it dumps bios from legacy memory space, so it will not work on macs, only hackintoshes (for now macpro will need bios image in plist)

so, use it only with hackintoshes, cards to test is 5870/5850/5970

What is your card?

There is one framebuffer I left untested. It is possible that certain cards may still require different framebuffers, in which case a wider testing group needs to be involved (especially for 5770's and 5850's).

Netkas seems to have gotten BIOS dumping working though, so ALMOST ALL ATI 5**0 series cards should work without a hitch.

bcz 3.0 isnt supported by apple yet.

Test plz with multisample option checked and set to 4

OK, by using 5870 only with NO displays connected I was able to see this from Macbook.

Next I am going to try using Macbook via firewire s startup drive since I never use it to test stuff, a "virgin" system.

With no displays connected it boots up and 3000 is loaded.

Attaching displays AFTER boot doesn't do anything, even with "Detect Displays" hit.

If the displays are connected at boot, it loads a messy set of screens, lots of squares and SLOW drawing of more squares.

Did a dump from it while booted with no displays, will attach.

here is kinda universal version, it dumps bios from legacy memory space, so it will not work on macs, only hackintoshes (for now macpro will need bios image in plist)

so, use it only with hackintoshes, cards to test is 5870/5850/5970

Mobile cards are usually a different story. If I'm not mistaken, the 5850 mobility is actually based on the 5700 core. It's best to wait until mobility chips have some support.

I have removed X2000

I looked inside the ATY_init in ext folder and can see the ROM for my XFX 5870, so it is right ATY

Basically, whenever it loads X3000 it slows boot to a CRAWL which ends in blocks of color on 5870 screen.

Don't know what else to do.

Reinstalled all the driver kexts one by one through terminal.

Started from Macbook HD which has never been fiddled-with. Freshly installed correct ATY and drivers. Same behavior as if from Mac Pro hard drive.

From Nvidia 7300 I can see that X3000 is loaded, but connecting a display to 5870 it first turns blue, then very slowly turns into the blocks of color.

If anyone else has gotten a 5xxx series card working on an actual "designed in Cupertino" Mac, please post about it.

Can't understand why a Hack would interact with X3000 so differently from actual Mac.

Let me know if there are any other logs, dumps, etc that might hold a clue. It almost seems like card is running wrong RAM speed or GPU clock. Wonder if that AGPM kext has anything to do with this?

Just remembered another weird thing.

If I have 2 screens side by side, the 7300 nice and clear and 5870 all blocks of messy color, I can move the cursor over to 5870 screen and it reacts normally, looking like little black arrow.

However, if I drag a window over there it breaks up into the color blocks, kind of like it is sprayed all over the screen. I can take pix with a camera if that will help. Sometimes the window just won't go over there and will "bounce" back into 7300 side. It feels very unhappy.

I suppose this means that a 5xxx series in a Mac is now an imminent inevitability, like in the next few weeks. Apple wouldn't have bothered stuffing it into 10.6.4 if it weren't. They could've waited for 10.6.5.

I'm wagering on both the Mac Pro and the iMac getting one. July is when Intel is supposed to ramp up 6 core Xeon production, and I doubt Apple is going to waste any time when they know that supplies are sufficient for an update.

System also hangs a LOT with the kexts loaded - I assume its trying to send certain tasks (image viewing / hardware acceleration / etc) to the 5870 and thats when it hangs.

Again, are you guys using the openGL framework that's in the new Mac Minis' 10.6.4 image? There might be issues if the openGL has been updated to match drivers, and if you use an outdated framework.
But this might not be the issue, since the card seems to work well in hacks.

There are benchmarks all over the internet. It appears to be about half again as fast as a GTX 285. The only thing that would be able to beat it is a GTX 480, but with Nvidia's history of garbage drivers for OS X that get better over a long period of time, the Radeon might be the better choice.

The radeonHD 5000 drivers are included in this update apparently. If they differ from the ones you posted earlier, perhaps it's safer to use these kext, together with the updated openGL framework?

I'm not sure. The drivers didn't work apparently. You have installed all the kext, not just ATY_init, right?
The benchmark probably ran in software mode. Exposé shouldn't be very smooth either. What about quicktime videos?

You may need to reinstall the extensions with kext helper. But Netkas and the Rominator would know better.

No it's not. See if the ATI extensions are shown in system profiler, extensions section.

btw, on MacPro, try this trick to get rid of artifacts:

Tried this...no help unfortunately.

Went ahead and installed OpenCl and full extensions package again as well via Pacifist.

Still a messy screen.

If I remove x3000 kext and reboot, screens clear up but just as frame buffer, no 3D.

Hopefully someone with better knowledge of differences between Hacks and Macs can figure out what is so different that Hacks can run 5870 trouble free and Macs can only run as a simple Frame Buffer with no 3D or OpenGl or CI or QE.

IOReg dump is while running Mini extensions and frameworks.

Currently, I have to say that 5870 on Mac Pro is still a dream for future.

Right now it loads fine if I just do the latest aty_init.kext but of course no info is injected into my system profiler. Loading with the ati5000controller.kext, atiframebuffer.kext and atisupport.kext it will load in but then no display or in verbose it just gets stuck on console. If I try with the x3000 kext plugin and bundles it will either kernel panic or give me a very corrupt screen like The Rominator posted.

Pretty much the same here(0x68a0) for my 5870 mobile. The 5870 mobile is pretty much a 5770 desktop. I hope someone figures this out, GL.

I actually did.

I can log in from a Macbook via Screen Sharing. Everything is glacially slow, but I was able to get to desktop. On the 30" it was unrecognizable mess, but via screen sharing desktop showed up, but with some minor artifacts. I was able to switch to a lower res which showed up on the 30" after a couple minutes.

The feeling is that the machine is fighting off an endless string of errors and is barely able to keep running. I was unable to get it to switch back to 2560 x 1600, mostly because I ran out of patience.

It is quite frustrating to be so close. I can have a cleanly drawn desktop via the 5870, it shows in Profiler corectly, but no real 3D.

Screen sharing is dog slow when GPU acceleration is absent. It may switch to software mode or something. I experienced the situation in my Mac Pro with an unflashed PC 4870.
It's interesting that some hackintoshes show the same symptoms as Mac Pros do, but not with the 5870 apparently.
It really looks like a driver issue, but it's not clear why acceleration works on hachintoshes with the same card. Has this ever occurred in the past, with another GPU?

BTW, why to driver stop at X3000? Why don't we have some ATIRadeonX4000.kext or ATIRadeonX5000.kext?

It's unclear if they managed to get 3D acceleration though.

Downloaded the drivers and aty_init from netkas' website;

I had to add devid 68BE to ati5000controller.kext , I also replaced the Uakari framebuffer to Eulemur in the aty_init's info.plist.

Only one port is working, however (the bottom DVI one), but I can totally live with that, never had a dual monitor setup and never will :)

No, I can confirm the report is somehow inaccurate, Lionel says it "nearly" work, but he did not say that QE/CI was missing. And for the user post in forum, i'm fairly sure it was in VEAS mode.

I will ask Lionel to update his news with more details, or ask for his permission to do it. Sorry for the inaccurate informations...

just replace every word Uakari by Eulemur in Info.plist of ATY_init .kext, then reinstall kext.

Ulalume (or whatever it was, I spelled it right in aty) resulted in no display, but all kexts seemed to have loaded properly

I have now tried "Zonalis"...same messy display but ONLY on upper DVI port. Nothing on lower. Displayport and HDMI also seem nonfunctional.

When I say "upper" I mean the DVI port that is by itself, next to fan outlet

Anyone find a fix for the kernel panic with the x3000 kext? I'm working with a 5870 on an i7 hackintosh and nothing seems to work. I can start with -x, but obviously that doesnt help.

With the Zonalis framebuffer, the lower DVI port can be enabled by plugging an HDMI display. However, using this framebuffer, BOTH DVI ports are Single Link. The DP port can sense Hot Plug, but no signal comes from it.

Someone with a 5770 that only has upper DVI should try plugging HDMI cable in. HDMI cable may need to terminate in a display.

And again, no QE/CI.

Also, have a theory that messed up screens may be due to incorrect math for pixel clock. May or may not know what I am talking about. Pix at 11.

Vervet has same basic behavior. When used with an ATI 2600XT, either X2000 will load or x3000. If 2000 loads, the 5870 works as 2D frame buffer and 2600 works normally. When x3000 loads the 2600 stays locked on boot screen and 5870 shows mess.

When I tried VGA on the 5870, it becomes somewhat easier to see. Instead of strange repeating squares of distorion, it seems that the desktop is stretched horizontally.

This is bourne out by the resolution choices with the Apple 30" on the 7300GT in. It only wants to mirror, doesn't allow me to click the off selection for mirroring. When 1920x1200 is chosen for 30", the 24" Dell is given 1600x1200. It even seems like you could SQUEEZE the picture from the sides and line it up. Mind you, each action or resolution change takes 40-50 seconds. The machine seems mostly locked up and occasionally a mouse click gets through.

Further tests tomorrow with other Frame Buffers. I may also try flashing my 5870 with the Sapphire Vapor-X ROM and see if it runs better with the ATY-Init that includes it.

I've got an Asus 5870, and working from an otherwise successful hack install of 10.6.4 I've been unable to get it to boot with the aty_init and driver bundle kexts installed. Serious artifacting similar to Rominator, or just hangs at a blue screen. I'm going to try the trick you recommended, netkas. However, with the level of artifacting i've been getting it'll be hard to do anything, such as change resolution. If I set Graphics Mode to 1024x768 in my com.apple.boot.plist, will that start osx in 1024x768? Or rather, should it?

Edit: didn't work, oh well. I removed that line from my plist and it's not artifacting at all anymore. Now it's just hanging at a lightish blue screen.

From my understanding, if you don't install x3000 kext, you don't get hardware acceleration. download one of the zips posting in this thread, if that doesn't work, then your best bet is honestly to just wait for an update from netkas.

use kext helper. just moving them into /s/l/e/ isn't good enough.

I got a 5970 delivered today after reading about all this great new progress over the weekend and placing my order.

I've got it working on my i7 hackintosh using netkas' method but with the 5970 in I get some very strange behaviour in OSX. Finder, Safari, System Preferences and Activity Monitor all stall and give me "Application Not Responding" when I right click their icon in the dock.

Finder works for a little while before bugging out and beachballing. Safari starts and works on some pages but on others it fails. For example, if I go to the macrumors homepage, it starts loading but freezes and beachballs before the two side columns can be rendered. System Preferences and the Activity Monitor don't start. No window comes up, they appear to be running in the dock but right clicking gives the not responding status.

Replacing the 5970 with my old 4870 (and leaving all the kexts etc that I installed to get the 5970 working in place) fixes everything.

I'm still having trouble getting my Asus EAH 5870 to work with my Hack. It occurs to me that besides having an Asus card as opposed to a Sapphire, the only other difference is that I used a retail Snow Leopard DVD to install on my Hack. It's vanilla kernel, no patches, and for all intents and purposes, thinks it's a legitimate iMac. I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but I would think it might. Would anyone happen to know if my problems getting this card to work are resulting from it not being a reference 5870 card, or the fact that my Hack's kernel is... not hacked?

Now the Card is actually doing something. When the card is in, the system boots, but it hangs right before login... It displays light blue on all screens... So does the 7300GT....

I can boot fine if only the 7300 is in, but with the 5750 alone or with both of them - blue screens....

No luck...

I either get the scrambled screen or KP and curtain at boot...
I managed to get it to work properly in terms of resolution etc. It even works as a secondary output, but the system is extremely unresponsive. And aside from System Profiler nothing would open.... and eventually the system would hang....

There must be something else wrong here... either drivers or framebuffer or whatever, because I noticed that the Card would get extremely hot when OSX is loaded....

Any input?

I don't think it's a problem with the cards or their firmware, since I was able to reproduce every single problem you had with your 5870 with my 5750....

Can you look in ioregistryexplorer? It is in Developer folder, if you installed it.



No change, doing the same stuff. I did not install Developer, but I can try later. Again, slacking off and posting from work. Will edit with update.

actually scratch my earlier report, 5870 gives output on both ports without x3000. Dvi to Hdmi also works. Just no QECI.
