wow this is kind of scary.
i changed my password and payment method to none.
i also changed my security question or whatever incase i ever forgot my password.

Saw this on Engadget. I predict we'll see something similar to that guy with 9,000 apps, where Apple nukes them and bans the developer. Let's hope.

So maybe Im just slow today but in order to be hacked are people buying something in itunes that lets these guys in or is there a whole that needs to be plugged?

Just want to add my experience in this thread also:

I discovered that my iTunes was hacked in the early morning of June 29th. I received two order confirmations for a total of around $50-60. One of the things purchased was a $2.99 Vietnamese book from developer BTN.

I contacted the iTunes store and had my credit card company reverse the charges. I changed my password, un-linked my credit card, and had the CSR de-authorize all machines.

wow this seems pretty intense! lucky i only had about $6 of store credit left (no CC associated thank god).

sorry to all those that got hacked :( i hope you get full refunds.

In my case, I have never paid for a single app. The last thing I bought on iTunes was a CD a year ago.

I have a few free games and apps on my iPhone, mostly 'top free' and nothing obscure.

The night before I got the unauthorized purchases, I ran the App Store app to update Paper Pilot (free). The iPhone 4 is my first iPhone, so it was odd seeing the App Store ask for my password twice (maybe three times) even though I'm sure I typed my password perfectly. I don't know if repeated logins are common or not. But this was the only thing that stood out in my mind that night.

Do you sync with a mac or a pc?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-gb; Nexus One Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

Thanks for the heads up.
I've told the wife to check her purchase history in iTunes and will do so for myself too.

I hope anyone affected gets their money back. :(

Apple isn't reimbursing anyone. If you've been hit, call your bank or cc company as soon as possible.

My sister had 200 bucks charged. CC company was able to reverse the charges thankfully. She hadn't logged onto the account for maybe 6 months either.

I'll bet this guy waited till a holiday weekend for the US too, as a reaction from Apple would be slower.

Anyone who got hacked can you say if you did NOT have a dictionary crackable password?

Also it seems like this had to be something that took a bit of planning and time to do, how did they think they were going to get the money? Apple is not likely to pay them. Seems like a pretty significant oversight in their plot to steal all this money.

As for attacking on a holiday, well we should remember the Tet Offensive.

How are the accounts able to be hacked so easily? Is there an easy way to find out your email / password for iTunes or is it some sort of phishing attack that gets you to enter your details?

ok, i pulled my cc-number from itunes. you newer know.

reminder for myself: do not buy itunes gift cards in the next few months from ebay, they may be stolen and the codes may be blocked. :(

by the way, if this is not front page worthy then what is?
