For HD WMV playback, most players will achieve it by some losses on video quality. Maybe this is what GoodPlayer is weak at.

Yup, I've even noted this (drastic drop in color resolution and, therefore, lower image quality) in the current version of the chart of my Multimedia bible with AnyPlayerHD, Video Media Player ( http://itunes.apple.com/app/video-media-player/id438094144?mt=8 ) and PlayerXtreme ( http://itunes.apple.com/app/playerxtreme-hd-premium-multimedia/id456584471?mt=8 ).

Playing WMV files and fast forwarding it always crashes GoodPlayer. It has always been the case since last few months. On the other hand, AVPlayer has no issues with playing the WMV Files and fast forwarding/rewinding is so smooth. So it means that it can be fixed on GoodPlayer. Seems to be a software decoder glitch which is causing the crashes. IMHO GoodPlayer is the best at the moment but this shortcoming really annoys me as for viewing WMV Files, I have to watch them in AVPlayer instead.
Please fix it hustmobile.

Thanks, we will try to improve the WMV playback.

I've played quite bit with scrubbing in both GoodPlayer and AVPlayerHD and found out the following:

1, AVPlayerHD doesn't support scrubbing AT ALL in non-VC 1-Simple profile WMV3 videos. Not even 320x132 videos can be scrubbed, assuming they use a non-VC 1-Simple profile. (An example: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13100693/ht...s/wmv/2-wmv-320x132_VBR_Q95_VC1Adv_WMAPro.wmv . Compare it to a VC1-Simple and, therefore, scrubbable video at, say, http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13100693/ht...s/wmv/1-wmv-320x132_VBR_Q95_VC1Simple_WMA.wmv ). It has no problems with WMV1 (aka WMV7) and WMV2 (aka WMV8) videos, though.

What are your videos that you can scrub in AVPlayerHD? WMV1, 2 or 3 (you can quickly test this in the desktop VLC – just select Window / Media Information / Codec and check out what is written in the „Codec” field in the Stream X record whose „type” attribute is „Video” and not „Audio”)? If the latter, what's the resolution? Low or more than 352 × 288 (the maximum for Simple profile)?

2, GoodPlayer seem to quickly crash on repositioning in Quarter HD (960*xxx) videos encoded using the VC-1 Advanced profile (and WMA Pro audio). An example: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13100693/ht...quarter_source_VBR_Q95_VC1Advanced_WMAPro.wmv (try quickly scrubbing it around!). HOWEVER, Quarter HD (960*xxx) videos encoded using the VC-1 Main profile (with WMA audio; example: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13100693/ht.../3-wmv-quarter_source_VBR_Q95_VC1Main_WMA.wmv ) videos don't seem to exhibit this bug.

I've thoroughly stress-tested (quickly scrubbed back and forth for minutes(!)) the following players (the ones that will be recommended in my forthcoming WMV playback article, in addition to GoodPlayer and AVPlayerHD) using the same video and supporting scrubbing (unlike AVPlayerHD):

ProPlayer http://itunes.apple.com/app/proplayer-the-video-player/id454180376?mt=8

PlayerXtreme http://itunes.apple.com/app/playerxtreme-hd-premium-multimedia/id456584471?mt=8 (this app also shows the target frame, just like GoodPlayer – note that its visual quality is lower because of the lack of color dithering!)

VLC (the old, AppStore version) (no target frame, no color dithering)

QQPlayerHD http://itunes.apple.com/app/qqplayerhd/id434585208?mt=8 (both target frame and color dithering)

None of them has produced any crashes.

Thanks, we will try to improve the WMV playback.

Please read my analysis of the problem above - you can also use my test video WMV's. (Feel free to tell us more if you can provide a time estimation for the fix - I'd include it in my article.)

Thanks a lot.
We will check if we can improve GoodPlayer on this issue.
The issue looks to be on demuxer or the decoder part.

Yup, I've included a lot of shots of these low-quality renderings (VLC, AnyPlayerHD etc.) in my "WMV playback bible" (sorry, can't link it as I don't want to self-promote my articles.)

Just a side remark: currently, audio delay setting doesn't work with TS MPEG2 files (like the one at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13100693/ht...in--K11-_2011.05.09_YLE-TV1_12882718[copy].ts ). XBMC's audio delay function works just fine with the same file (and TS files in general).

A quick correction: if you set the delay in MPEG-2 TS (DVB) files, you'll need to restart / resume playback (by exiting to the menu, for example) to see the changes, unlike with other formats, where changes can be seen at once.

You know you can go in and edit your previous message instead of making a new post to correct something - right?

Sure you can - nevertheless, I wanted thread subscribers to know I've posted false information, this is why I've posted a separate post.

Does the app allow boosting of volume when listening through headphones beyond 100%?

Yes, it supports, Settings-->Audio Volume Boost , the maximum is 400%.
Please note sometimes you need to turn off "Hardware Decoding" to make volume boost work.
Volume boost only works for software decoding.

Hmm, so if I am playing 720p MP4 files they can easily be handled through software decoding and I can use Audio Volume Boost. Is that correct?

If the media file can be played back smoothly via software decoding, then you can use Audio Volume Boost for it.

what about 720p mkv? i really need a video player which can handle 720p smoothly.

You may want to read my previous posts - I've posted quite a lot on this subject.

In a nutshell: you should remux the MKV to MP4 with Subler (if you have a Mac). While GoodPlayer (and other, high-end video players like AVplayerHD, ProPlayer and, when the new version is approved by Apple, "It's Playing") are pretty good at playing back 720p content, the best is still using directly the HW decoder.

is there any specific way to use remux? because i convert the video file to m4v file and then i put it into my iphone but there is no sound. but if i play same video on my mac via vlc i get sound. what i'm doing wrong?

Menneisyys2: for mkv to mp4 converter, it is important to just pass-through the video part (no video re-encoding) , and only re-encode the audio part (if the original audio is AAC, you can even skip this part). Do you have any article on this kind of converter software? This will save lots of re-encoding time.

Did you enable AC3 -> AAC conversion as is shown in the first screenshot at http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/watching-videos-taken-max-roundup-mkv-mp4m4v-video-converters ?

Crashes

I'm having some problems in playing a batch of avi files with goodplayer. It just keeps crashing 4 out of 5 times when I try to play url through smb/samba and even locally after downloading on the new iPad 3. I haven't had any problems with other avi's before, must be the way it has been converted?

Any information you need to fix this? I thought the avi's could be corrupt but they play fine on my pc, mac, and even on the app oplayer hd lite with no crash at all.

Also, perhaps a request for background downloading via samba/smb. Seems to stop downloading if I use another app. Only works if I keep goodplayer in the foreground.

Thanks for all your hard work, great app!

For the crash issue, sometimes the files can be corrupted in our testing. Please check FAQ #41 tip first, if it does not help. Please remove all the issued file from GoodPlayer app, then upload them again. Sometimes it helps in our testing. And a reboot if iDevice is recommended too.

#41 I have files that could not be played back on iPad 2/new iPad(iPad 3)/iPhone 4S, please help

If you have some files that are with issues for GoodPlayer playback on iPad 2/new iPad (iPad 3)/iPhone 4S, please try to set GoodPlayer->Settings->Multi Core Decoding to "off", and play the issued files again.
For iPad 2/new iPad (iPad 3)/iPhone 4S and future multi core iOS devices, there is an option to disable multi core decoding. GoodPlayer->Settings->Multi Core Decoding. The default is on. When it is on, some video decoding will use multi core concurrently to improve the performance greatly. When it is off, all the decoding only uses single core to get more stability. Please note that it is recommended to set it to on. Only for those media files that have issue with multi core decoding, set it to off.

For the SMB background downloading issue, we will consider it.But please note Apple has limitation for the background downloading, it only lasts for a limited time (10 minutes).
