Well, I'm French and live in paris.
Whilst I wouldn't focus like you on the racial aspect - which does not predispose anyone for any mean actions in case you forgot it - it is true that Paris (where I live) has become a very difficult, insecure city. There is clearly a total lack of respect, of education, of hygiene, of order in the city.
So because of some drunk idiots at NYE you generalise about several million people? And then you talk about a lack of education?

Well if you were educated by the french system you have a point.

While it is obvious that many poor migrants or children of migrants take part in the riots and disrupt the quietness of other citizens, let's face it, rioting, getting drunk and revolting against order is something deeply rooted in the French culture. Poor, inoccupied people, who assault or revolt or do graffitis on the walls, among whom quite a few migrants, act in a way that is very... French. Because their own parents and also because school,
Not really

Peacefull protest (and not even that) has been part of france yes, but not more or less then any other nation has ahd.

the French school system, failed to educate them. A way that does not solve any problems by the way...[/quote
Its actually quite average, about the same level as the USA , but for close to half the price.

The more it is, the more I despise the shape the French society is turning into.

Of few drunk idiots now stand for the entire french society?

----------

It's basic supply and demand.

For Windows PCs, there is low demand (for secondhand models) and high supply.

For Macs, there is high demand (for secondhand models, partly because of the price) and lower supply.

So if you were being fair, you'd have said that Apple's lack of cheap products drives demand for used (and therefore cheaper) models to be higher, along with the lack of competition in OS X and iOS devices, and the fact that their products are seen as luxury items.

None of which, by the way, Apple would ever want to change.

Low demand? I see second hand PC's sell just as good as second hand macs. Lets not forget the price difference between the 2 . An iphone 5 costs 2/300 more then a simular high end model from other brands, not suprising it sells for 100/150 more after a couple of years.

Its more likely this was just convienience, wich store has thousands of samsung notes lying around?

These iphones are probably somewhere in eastern europe/africa by now, easy to sell them and use them without issues .

If their products weren't so over priced then there wouldn't be such a false second hand product market. You don't see people smash and grab PC World for some Samsung laptops because their prices are reasonable so there isn't a stupid second hand market.

Another ridiculous post.

Those numbers are completely bogus. bogus. A non-iPhone would be lucky to sell for a third of what an iPhone would after "a couple of years".

I guess apple store will be needing a new design. Replace concrete and glass with unibody aluminum

Heavily armed? But wait - how was it possible? Owning firearms is illegal in France! I don't get it!

BS ? Samsung galaxy S gets 150-200 now out of a price of 300/500 when it was sold.

Iphone 4 250-350 out of a price of 450/650

They both dropped around 200/250 depending on when bought and sold.

Its usualy the same for most apple products lately the higher prices second hand usualy are offset by the higher purchase prices. Some exceptions exist of course but iphone isnt one.

On eBay, SGS is selling for $100-150, while iPhone 4 can easily exceed $250. Just a quick glance at recently sold auctions.

I couldn't find the launch price of the SGS, but there's no way it was $299 off contract.

300 was after 1,5year, just like the iphone 4 now is 450

And I looked at ebay and saw prices at end of auction ranging from 125 to 175 .

Price difference remains largely intact, you can just sell it for more because it costed more in the first place. Iphone 4 is a fine example, a almost new one barely makes more then a 2 year old one.

Apple could but an end to this problem if it wanted to. All they need is an on-line registry that matches device serial number to the owner. Then no-one would want a stolen Apple device because it would not work.

There are some details to work out but in general every devive (iPhone, iPad, Mac,..) has an owner, when they leave the factory the owner is "Apple Inc." and then later the buyer can register it, or not. But if he does register it then he can always remotely shut down the device or if it has a GPS, find out where it is. This function can be burned into non-erasable ROM

But on the whole I bet Apple makes money from theft. Some one takes your phone and then you buy a new one and Apple wins. Theft is on the whole a "Good Thing" for Apple even if they did just loose a few of their own.

Not sure about your last point, but I agree that if APPLE wanted, they could nip this whole problem in the bud. Password-protected charging and IMEI #s come to mind. It's almost inconceivable that these things can still happen in this new millennium. You can barely sneeze in public, without being on someone's camera, somewhere.

With today's technology, there's no excuse for these kinds of robberies.

No it doesn't. But you clearly don't adhere to the basic principles of logic so I won't waste my time trying to convince you otherwise anymore.

Sorry france. This is what you get voting in pro-immigration government officials. I mean how hard is it for you to screw up. You don't even share a BORDER with a 3rd world country.

Meanwhile in the states, any foreign africans / asians you meet here are generations for well educated, relatively affluent since they have to jump through a lot of hoops to make it in.

You never see riots here in the states anymore. The police here at least have balls to put some law in order, something mr. socialist france seems incapable of.

Never going to Paris unless its a one-two day jaunter through on my honeymoon to get it off the checklist. Same with London.

Btw, Nice is real nice and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even the people on the streets were happy to converse in English!

LOL. You must rarely leave your house. Meanwhile, California is more like Mexico, where without Spanish it will be difficult to buy a bigmac. Whites are today a minority with a significant number of Mexicans to be unaccounted for as a bonus to the problem. Meanwhile, almost 100% immigrants coming to the USA are poorly educated, the wave of doctors, engineers and other skilled professionals coming to the US has largely ended in the 80s after the post war boom. Meanwhile, you are forgetting about south central in LA and other numerous wonderful ghettos across the states. Why not a honeymoon in east LA instead of Paris? Romantic and all Americam, where the always ready and heavily armed full of courage airborne equipped police lead by officer Dick will make sure your sorry ass with your Costco beauty will all be safe! Forget going to France. You will hate the experience, where you will find the city not resembling your favored mall you grew to be so accustomed to, the food will be foreign to you and the prices will just piss you off. Your bride will suddenly look crappy with the background of millions of people dressed actually in something other than your lovely GAP outfit. Really, just stay a home, or do the very American visit to Europe. Go to Vegas! You will see Venice, Paris, all in one place, you will hit the all you can eat buffet and you both will look now like a magnificent couple. Yeeha!

There is not much a store can do to protect itself from armed robbery other than locking up merchandise (Which they keep more on the floor during holidays to speed up checkouts.) And having a shootout where innocent people get hurt in an Apple store will damage their brand way more than having a bunch of goods stolen.

Having rent-a-cop's with guns will do no good as they can't kill people for theft.

You are confusing robbery with theft. Robbery is a violent crime. Shooting armed robbers isn't defending property, it's defending life.

Maybe it's different in France, but the general principal should hold everywhere. If someone points a gun at you, it doesn't matter if their intent is to steal something - you shoot them.

Spoken by someone not from a country or generation that has has to face an invasion from an equivalent force with which it shares a land border I assume. Then let's not forget the 10's of thousands of French that died for their resistance.

Thanks for the stereotype again. For someone who obviously likes their history you forget that America's independence is owed in no small part to the French and that one of America's greatest symbols was a gift from them. This last paragraph assumes you are American of course. It is not an attack on all Americans either, just those who say stupid stuff like this. All nations have such people alas.

As for the story, it is sad but not surprising.

PS €1m = circa $1.3m

Apologies to all, it was a thoughtless post that for some reason seemed funny at the time. Nobody deserves to be a victim of crime.

No! The principal holds anywhere that guns are in normal circulation.

Defending ones own life doesn't have a national origin last time I checked.

I choose to not be a victim... or at least resist if the situation were to ever arise.

We'll leave it there shall we? This thread is about a robbery at an Apple store I can just see it turning into a discussion about Columbine et al.

I could be wrong... but I'm pretty certain American guns were used to liberate France in WWII..... we definitely paid back France for their investment in the USA and their aiding us during the American Revolution.
