What was the downvote button originally for, everyone keeps talking about it? As a matter of fact, what is the upvote button for?

The up vote and down vote buttons were put in place to allow members to vote positively (up vote) or negatively on a given post.

As the myriad of other threads in the Site and Forum Feedback subforum shows it caused more distractions and issues when the downvote was in place.

Arn is looking into the usage of both as he noted in one of the other downvote threads but for now we only have the up vote button

I think they should bring back the downvote button. With just the upvote button, it's akin to something like Facebook likes, which was not the intended purpose for the rating system.

The original rating system should have stayed in place because now even coming here for help, it's more difficult to discern between legitmate information and false information. Believe it or not, lots of false information gets passed by members who offer hackneyed solutions.

The up vote used to show research effort; it is useful and clear.

The downvote used to mean that the solution does not show any research effort; it is unclear or not useful.

So now we only have an upvote button that serves no actual purpose and have to wade through the rest.

It's a broken system.

This has been discussed extensively and given Arn's post there's no need to resurrect this debate until the site owner decides on the fate of such a feature
