Well, after posting the message blow, I decided to give a good look at my 16gig Black iPhone (bought on launch). I think there's a crack between the speaker and chrome. Very tiny, and practically invisible unless you cause light reflections to move back and forth across. I still need to take a macro photo when I get home to be sure.

I recall someone spotting cracks on their white iPhone the moment he took it out of the box at home. When he went back to the store they accused him of dropping it and wouldn't exchange it or something.

It's sometimes difficult to differentiate between stress fractures and fractures that result from normal wear and tear. Granted that stress fractures or wear fractures that occur in the first week might seem abnormal, it would not be abnormal, in my opinion, for fractures to occur after that time.

In my own experience using these types of devices there are any number of things which might damage the casing. Setting the device down too quickly or in a forceful way on tables, counters, etc., oils from the hand, prolonged exposure to sunlight, excessive vibrations...

The point is that this device has been manufactured in a standard way, but the types and degree of usage by each individual purchaser is infinite. Even the most well thought out stress tests are no substitute for thousands if not millions of users and their varied experiences.

As with any mass produced product there will always be those who experience satisfactory usage and those who experience subprime usage. This is just a fact of life

MB048LL - Black 16gb model. I've got a crack starting to form from the headphone jack to the chrome bezel. Hopefully taking it in tomorrow to get replaced -- it's covered under Apple care.

Looks to me like this is a bad batch.

I have a black 16GB that I purchased on the 11th. It has 2 rather prominent cracks near the dock connector. I purchased it at AT&T but was wondering whether I could take it to Apple. Will they take it or will I have to go through AT&T ? Help appreciated!!! :)

Keep us informed what they will do. It doesn't matter that you have Applecare. At this point it is still covered by warranty.

I personally cannot imagine that Apple will replace a phone with just a crack on that spot (I also have it there). It is too small, and doesn't really stop the phone from functioning. I'm personally waiting a bit to see what happens. iPhones are short in supply here in The Netherlands anyway.

My white iPhone 3G has begun to form a small crack near the headphone jack. I hope Apple releases as statement soon so I know if I should go and get a replacement or not!

I recall someone posting of a crack ages ago on a white model, so I guess it was more visible, and when he brought it in to an ATT store, the basically assumed he dropped it.

Now, I wouldn't replace mine because of my small crack, at least the almost invisible one on my black phone. But if I had a white one and it was visible and lived with it, then my phone stopped working for no reason, I'd hate to be accused of dropping it when they notice the crack and not be covered by the warranty when I did nothing.

So some official statement better come out so no misunderstandings happen. And this can seriously effect resale value when one tries to get cash for the next iPhone model.

Isn't this a no-brainer? If I have crack on my iPhone, they HAVE to replace it. The whole "does not impair usability" argument is utterly wrong. I'd want any Apple purchase to be flawless, regardless if whether it affects usability or not.

That's Nothing! I'm Burned!

A few hours ago, I fell asleep on my couch and woke up from extreme pain coming from my pocket...

I pulled out my iPhone 3G which was extremely hot... i then placed it on the floor, for whatever reason, my phone burned my leg, and after looking back at my phone, you could definitely see melted plastic...

Sorry, I don't see anything melted in those photos. Can you be more specific?

^^^me neither...

I don't see any cracks as of yet in my new new black 16GB iphone 3g (this is the replacement for the first iphone 3g in SoCal - you know what they say, "first is the worst, second is the best, blah blah blah :p) Then again though, I have only had it 5 hours with barely any sunlight to look at it in.... My old iphone 3g had no cracks, model # was MB704LL, week 27 I believe (it reads 86827P.... that would be week 27, right?)

I'll update you on my new iphone's model # and week when it's done resetting.

Justin

EDIT: MB048LL, week 30 - no cracks so far

Me and a friend of mine just got done setting up our "Crackamatic 4000" which is a specially designed lens used to detect cracks in 3G iphones.

Imagine my horror when the first image to come back from the Crackamatic 4000 was this:

That is a crackmatic 4000 view of the back of the white iPhone casing.

Oh, now I can see it in the original pictures. Like the first one, where your hand reflects across the phone, you can see how it splits where it reflects around that huge rectangle that formed.
