Yep, though you might also try reversing the slots if you have trouble. Let us know if this works so we can all see which cards are OK and which are problematic. Note that you will only see the startup screen on the 120 - the 285 should fire up later. I think there was one report of the 120 fighting one Zotac card earlier on Mac rumors.

Entering the 285 league

As I stare across a room littered with computer bits, I can't believe i'm doing it...but I have ordered an EVGA GTX 285 (PC version)

It should be here tomorrow....(provided it comes from Newegg's Rose Hills warehouse)

I will attempt to use Netkas injectors to acheive usage in my 2006 3.0 1st Gen. Has anyone reported success in a first gen? I tried running EVGA driver install and it said it wasn't for my machine !!! Hmphhh !!!

I have also ordered some 256K ROM chips....I will be attempting to flash it too.I could not find the Micronix chips that 10thhzMac specified so I am trying different ones.

I have access to some Nehalem machines to test on but in a PERFECT world we would find the Holy Grail.... a way to add EFI support for 1st Gen.

Eager to see my UPS guy.......

maybe you can also take a look how big your BIOS File is ?
so we are able to compare the size between the efi and der bios version ?

thanks.

Do you have another Computer or iPhone or N770, you could Screen share in an find out why it's not working.

I've got a bit of free time in the evenings EST, for anyone who would want me to remote into their Mac and see why the injector is not working.

Keep in mind I would be able to see your data, so a clean install with no personal Data would be best, if you had a spare drive, you could unhook the Power to the drive your Data was on.

10THzMacDo you know how to check the EFI Rom and see if it's 64bit or EBC?

Rominator Copy NVIDIA Retail Mac Driver Installer 18.5.2f16.mpkg to your desktop, show the contents, edit /Contents/distribution.dist with a text editor,
var system_models = ["1.0", "MacPro4,1"];
edit that line to match your Mac, Install and enjoy.

Note the 1.0 is what I edited to match my Hack.

expecting rominators results from the 285 on first gen mac pro's.

**Dilemma**
- ati 4870 XFX 1Gb -%80 set
- ati 4890 1GB ( is it even possible?) -%60
- ati 4870X2 2GB (why not?) -%50
- ati 4890x2 (rumors only really)
- nvidia 285 1Gb... %90 (if possible)
**/Dilemma**

Thing is im pretty set on 4870 now since its more affordable for me however i think i can dish out a couple more bucks for 4870x2 if its going to make a huge difference. however i think 4870x2 is kinda overkill for a casual gamer/photoshop artist like me right now.

i have a monitor with a dvi and analog input, i might try plug in the GT120 to the analog and DVI to the gtx285, so when booting to mac i can switch to the analog to see anything wrong once boot into leopard i can easilly switch to the gtx, not sure its a good idea thou. waiting my card now.

What kind of times are you around? I'd love somebody to have a poke at my GTX 275 that gets as far as a blue screen and no further.

8800+260 update

I just tried these with June drivers and both netkas and CoreVidia 1.1 injector. The 260 is the Zotac with 216 cores. Result is same in both cases. 260 loads with QE/CI acceleration and gives good OpenGL scores (just under 1000 on some of 1.x cases). Link speed 2.5, but that does not seem to impact things much. OpenGL scores are slightly better with June drivers, as with 285.

Problem remains CUDA not working at all - does not even recognize 8800 properly (it did so before I tried all this). deviceQuery returns garbage for one card. So there is something missing, though the card seems fine for general graphics use. CUDA was fine on my Palit 285. I will go around the nvcap settings again when I get time.

I am away from my 285 for a few days so cannot give further details on it - sorry. Am *VERY* interested to hear result of Rominator's experiment.....

6pm-1am US Eastern time, but I'm flexible, PM me with a day and time you've got to do it in.

Does your Mac get booted up all the way, if it hangs or crashes, it won't be much use, I don't think Remote Debugging of the Kernel works over the internet.(I had good luck with two machine debugging last week, two of my OS X hack boxen, that had never been able to sleep, now do, only Sleep to Ram, but they are both set to S3?)

If it boots, and just no display, we can still Screen Share, and find the trouble.

Alright, I've got a 2600XT installed in Slot 3 now.

When the 2600XT alone is powered, I get signal. When I plug the GTX 275 in (running 2600XT and the 275) OS X will boot as far as the blue screen and then hang.

/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app

sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0x14e"

REBOOT

See if that gives you some on screen output. If your Mac hangs and you see no text press the Power Button for 3 sec.

Some reason NVResman is KP'ing, we may need to do some work on ATY_Init for the 275GTX.

Can you boot Windows with the 275GTX installed?

We could try to do a bit of a work-a-round.

Dump your pc bios with Nibitor and I'll change some values in your PC Bios that may help, and give you a new NVCAP for ATY_Init.

You'll have to flash the new bios to the 275GTX, but there's no real danger, won't void your warranty.

Same result, just the blue screen on the two displays connected to the 2600XT and GTX 275 powered, and when booting back up with the GTX 275 unpowered I'm getting the KP log.

What's the sound like?

What do these cards sound like? My 8800GT wines a bit, and whatever I replace it with I want to be quieter. Yeah, I can do the aftermarket thing, but it's such a hassle.

Looking forward to CoD @ 26x16 :)

I've downloaded my ROM from the GTX 275 and sent to Cuda, so hopefully we can get somewhere with all this now!

Maury - these cards will be louder than an 8800GT.

FIRST STAB @ GTX285 in 1st Gen......NO BUENA

Installed the EVGA drivers, then the Netkas package.

No love from GTX by itself.

Tried with Mac 2600 in as well.....DVI stops on blue scren when plugged into 2600....nada via the 285.

Gonna try a 8800GT as 2nd card but not hopeful.

Would be helpful if Natit packages had verson numbeers....is it possible that package to get 4890 working left remnants that are interfering?

285 GTX working in 1st Gen Mac Pro !!!

Slapped an EFI32 8800GT in and a power splitter and BINGO !!! THE GTX285 IS WORKING !So far I have tried both outputs with Dual Link, both work.

So it seems the 8800GT is needed for something??? Will do whatever tests anyone thinks might help. I have a 7800GTX 256 running a Quadro EFI ROM I could also try with, I think it uses similar EFI to the 7300GT as it is G70.

The OGL test seems to show the throttling up issue. I ran it multiple times, score for 1st section always artificially low, card "kicking in".

Good work, Netkas !!!

It is an Nvidia 7800GTX256 Meg running a version of Quadro 4500 ROM for EFI Mac Pro.

Works great.

I did try it with the GTX285. Oddly, it allows the GTX to work, but first boot comes up with desktop on an imaginary display, the GTX as second desktop.

By placing the DVI connector on the 7800GTX briefly and then back on GTX, I can get it to only "see" one display.

So, it works better with 8800GT than with the 7800/Quadro.

FYI, I have also tested with Dual Display, and the GTX works great, just as long as there is another Nvidia card present.
