So I have decided to return my 27" Imac and go with a macbook pro.

Yup I would rather have the option of being portable when ever I need to. I will also be picking up a 27" thunderbolt display to have the best of both worlds. My only concern is will the the base model 13" macbook pro be able to handle video editing with screenflow and sometimes final cut pro? I tried one out the other day and there was a little lag when editing and the fans where pretty loud. So this is what I plan on doing and I would like to hear your thoughts on this situation. Big thanks in advanced for the help.

Your machine is going to heat up and it will be slower than your iMac. But that's the tradeoff you make when you go to a less powerful platform in favor of portability.
 
I'd really recommend a 15" MBP in your case, the quad core cpu and dedicated gpu will be a big help
 
Exactly what I did, except that I'm waiting for the new 17". The 13" is way too much of a downgrade dude. Get a 15" or 17" instead.
 
Yup, got a 2011 15" Macbook Pro and I edit all day long on it using FCPX. Smooth as butter.

P.S. It Geekbenches over 10,000 and my former editing machine (early 2008 8 core MacPro) Geekbenched around 9900.

I've got an early 2.2ghz 15" that benchmarks around that too, always blows my mind seeing it out geekbench the mac pro. I know it's just a benchmark but do you reckon it's all round faster than the '08 pro in real world use?

Well my MacPro had an SSD boot drive so it felt faster in simple things. Overall, it doesn't feel much different on this MacBook Pro...some things it does faster some things it does about the same. I'm considering adding an SSD boot drive and moving the 750Gb hard drive to the optical area and just have the optical drive as an external via USB if I need it. I don't use the optical drive much at all anyway and it would be cool to have a fast boot drive and a large storage/scratch drive inside this thing.

I'm with the rest, you should be going to a 15" MBP. The Intel 3000 driving a 27" Thunderbolt will underperform the iMac. Not to mention the base quad i5 iMac Geekbenches above the dual core i7 13"
 
I'd not go below a 13" MBP, as in, I'd really, really not recommend it. That's a big downgrade.

I would strongly suggest a 15" along with a Dell or HP 27" display, merely to save a bit of cash over the Thunderbolt display.
 
Judging by what you want to do with the machine, I would also recommend the extra power of the 15"/17" over the 13". Stepping down from a 27" iMac to a 13" seems like a big downgrade.
 
I'd go with a top of the line 15" over the 13" and wait until Ivy Bridge is out, that will give you a bit more performance.
 
Instead of going 13+TB display, I would just go all-out on the 17" instead because you've got a workhorse and a decent screen real estate. In any case I personally wouldn't buy an Apple display, I think they are greatly overpriced.

Yeah I have an SSD for boot and 750gb 7200rpm drive in the optibay for Logic projects and stuff, I really can't wish for anything faster

+1 for this one. When it was time for me to get a new computer, I went from my 24" iMac to a 17" MBP (refurb), with the plan to get a 24-27" monitor. However, I just picked up a adapter cable (mini-DVI, or whatever it is on my MBP to HDMI) from monoprice.com. Now if I need a big monitor, I just plug the MBP into the TV.
