From what I understand it is impossible now to use the Calendar app on my iPad without using iCloud, correct?

What is the point in preventing people from being able to store a calendar locally on their iPad, am I missing something? This seems like an odd restriction.

Seems strange to have to rely on a third-party app, which will probably lack integration with the other features of the device (e.g. integration with Reminders) because of such a simple thing.

My iPad is quickly beginning to look like a graveyard of unused, non-removable, Apple apps. :(

Switch off iCloud if it bothers you.
As for unwanted system apps; create a folder, bung them in there and then move the folder to a faraway homepage...never to be seen again.

You don't need to use iCloud to be able to use the calendar app
