Hard Drive/Storage Issue

Hi guys, after upgrading from OS X Snow Leopard since that was my original operating system to Maverick I realized that my total space is now 160 GB SATA instead of the 250 GB that the laptop comes with. It seems that I have 100 or so less gigs from my original capacity. What could be the problem? Thanks.

Macbook Pro 13in (2009 model)
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 DDR3
 
Download and use OmniDiskSweeper. It will provide a sorted list of what's consuming your space.

Another option which is more comprehensive is to use this terminal command
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g /

I prefer to redirect it to a text file (this puts it in your Documents folder
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g / > ~/Documents/du.txt
 
Ok thanks for replying I will try both those, but the thing is I remember my hard drive being bigger than the 160 GB (around 200GB) that it is now. The problem is not so much things taking up space, but rather either not recognizing my original internal hard drive or something along those lines. Most likely something that has to be tweaked with under the "Disk Utility" either by partitioning/formatting. I'm not entirely sure.
