The other day I was uploading pics to flickr via tethering my rmbp to my ipad.
This is what happened:

- took forever (~20 min. for 1/2 of 8jepgs)
- fans jumped in after a few minutes, to max (~6200rpm)
- rmbp got really hot

This is already the second time of this happening. Half way through I called it off, since it felt bad.

The browser used was chrome.

Any ideas on this?

If I were a betting man, I'd say Chrome. Try a different browser and see if the symptoms re-occur.
Thx for the reply.
Seems like noones got any other ideas (as usual).

I havent tried it with safari. I will soon.

Never used Chrome on OS X, however on Windows the bigger the image(s) you upload may it be SkyDrive/Flickr/Photobucket you'll see a spike of memory/CPU usage as it "pre-caches" during the job--some sites use a Chrome add-on to trim down on that side-effect. It has been a main reason I won't use Chrome on OS X.

Yesterday I uploaded a 10mb file to photobucket. Took me 4 hours :D
That was due to the slowest internet connection imaginable.
I used safari and no heat or fan problems.

I am almost sure now that chrome causes this and I hope it didnt damage my macbook.
Gonna delete chrome today. What a ****ed up browser!
