Beards seem to be pretty "in" these days, and I've chosen to follow the hairy masses and grow out a beard.

I'm looking for tips, tricks, and advice on how to properly grow, groom, and maintain a nice looking beard. Any certain products you use on it (creams, waxes, etc)? Tips on keeping a sharp, clean neck line? What do you do with your upper lip?

Two weeks was about all I used to do, then I'd trim it with a beard trimmer (down to stubble). I'm about 4-5 weeks in now. I struggle a bit with what to do with my upper lip. I used to just trim it every few days or so, but I don't want to go with the Amish beard, so I've been letting it go. Unfortunately my facial hair grows in dark reddish. That is where the plight with my upper lip comes into play. It looks kinda "porn-stache'y" when I let it get past about a week.

Anyways, speak up and share your tale of beard.

Oh, I just let it grow. Once in a while I'll do a quick trim with an electric clipper (because the sides grow quite unevenly).

But I'm not really a follower (sorry, your words: not mine), so I might not be the best person to offer advice if you're going for something like a hipster beard.

Enjoy your hair!;)

Haha, I deserved that.

I've had a beard since 1962, changing somewhat form and shape over time...but never clean shaven Using a clipper once or twice a week keeps it neat.

My only tip is to wash it when you shower with the rest of your body.

I get a hair and beard cut every two weeks and keep it neat and clean. I just use a normal Schick razor to keep my neck clean.

I wear a beard because I like the way it looks, not because anyone else does, and mostly, because I hate shaving - except for a little on the neck.

I'm not growing the beard because I'm concerned with how it looks to everyone else (though I can see how the sarcastic wording of my original post would make it seem that way). I just want to give it a try and see how it looks and see if it's something I like. I've always gone with the 1-2-3 week growth and trimmed it. I'm just curious to see how it looks and to see if I like it being a little longer. So far so good!

Please note that OP posted a pleasant and respectful note...showing his good manners.

You, on the other hand, felt the need to rub in the fact that I am ancient, feeble, and make Methuselah look like a kid!

We can't help your chronological age is measured over threescore... Time is not your friend, my friend. ;)

It's a wonder you can pull any espresso at all!

...

Errrr, beards, right. OP, you might be surprised how much water your facial hair can retain after a quick trip to the water fountain. ;)

I trim and superficially shape mine twice a week - other than that, it maintains itself :)

Timely post as I am currently in a life transition phase. I have always hated shaving, and recently discovered I hate not shaving (both the look and feel) at the two-week point (I am a slow grower).

A dilemma I tell you!

I'm currently 2 to 3 days in on a stubble project, Will try to maintain a 2 to 3 mm growth. I find trimming much less annoying than shaving.

God bless my wife for being so patient.

You got me beat. I have had a goatee for about 15 years.
