$2000, MBP vs Acer

All set to go and hand in my $2000 for a basic MBP to serve as my desktop replacement when I opened the Wall Street Journal yesterday and saw this advertisement:

Am I crazy to not consider this?

18" HD screen for a similar price? $2000

most people get a Mac because they want one the OS if that doesn't matter to you than get the Acer it's up to you but you are going to get very biased information here.
 
seems to me that it comes down to two questions:

Do you want an 18" screen? I know I wouldn't, but if it'll be used at your desk 95% of the time, I can see how it would be appealing.

How much do you like OS X? See, for me, it really doesn't matter what PC makers offer, or at what price. My software doesn't run on windows, and more importantly, I just don't enjoy using windows. I have XP on my macbook, and it's certainly usable, but I feel like the OS is fighting me all the time. Nothing is seamless and easy, like it is when I'm in X.
 
While that laptop looks awesome, I want to say. Well, I've had nothing but trouble with my last 6 acer laptops. I got them free (all new though), but seriously, with all the trouble I've had, it just wasn't worth it.

My Macbook has 100x better build quality and stuff than any of the Acers.

Oh, and once you've used a Mac, once you try to use Windows again you start to realise just how much Windows sucks. I quite liked Windows until I got a Mac, based on a friend's advice.

Just please, avoid Windows.
 
You can get a Dell Inspiron 1720 with 17" 1920x1200, GeForce 8600M GT, and BD-ROM/DVD+-RW combo starting at $1449.

The problem with this Dell is that it hasn't gigabit Ethernet. Just for that, one needs to go XPS, which is much more expensive. Ridiculous.
 
It is has a blu-ray disc drive? Those really kill your battery life. 18" screen takes a lot of the portiblity out of the laptop
 
This isn't even a good argument. If you are buying a Mac to run OS X, then the choice is obvious. If you want Winblows, then either get the Acer or run Boot Camp. You can't say MBP vs Acer, and expect to have a intelligible argument, unless you are just planning to run Winblows on each. If this is so, I would still say MBP. So, my choice is MBP, either way.
 
My partner had an Acer and all most threw it out the window last year such as the troubles it constantly had.... sold it for next to nothing on eBay and bought a MB instead.
 
hmm...thanks for the feedback

I've always been a Windows guy and haven't really had any complaints since switching to XP (that being said, I haven't had to endure the rumored horror that is known as Vista yet)

I'm interested in seeing what all the hubbub about OS X is so I guess I'll proceed tomorrow with the Mac purchase after all

Nah, just get a Gbit Expresscard/PCMCIA, or whatever fits the Inspiron. Should have one of the slots, and the cards are fairly cheap these days.
 
That thing is ugly like the nuclear war!

Plus, the website is making horrible noises, which should supposedly signify the hurdles the designers went through to design that thing. Instead, it appears that the laptop does something that falls between burping and farting, non-stop. Does that mean that this is the background noise you will have to endure if you turn it on?

Even this small detail gives you an idea as to what kind of people actually came up with this thing and their degree of proficiency in design. The best that they come up with is a bunch of flashing blue lights with diarrhea. Only $1999, available at your local ... retailer.
